Hey, maybe he could go to the library and look up in the microfilm of the LA Times when the first showing of PLANET was out there in 1968, and at what theatres?
I've been wanting to know that for years, but we don't have the LA Times here in the eastern libraries!

Well, this was a case of Roddy being wrong... A side by side comparison will show big differences between the two. Caesar had a higher forehead for one thing, not to mention his hair pieces were too long... And there's even differences between Cornelius as he appeared in PLANET and ESCAPE... He can say all he wanted to about the performances, but there WAS differences in the make-ups...

Let's Have No More Monkey Trials
To teach faith as science is to undermine both
by Charles Krauthammer, Time Magazine
The half-century campaign to eradicate any vestige of religion from public life has run its course. The backlash from a nation fed up with the A.C.L.U. kicking crèches out of municipal Christmas displays has created a new balance. State-supported universities may subsidize the activities of student religious groups. Monuments inscribed with the Ten Commandments are permitted on government grounds. The Federal Government is engaged in a major antipoverty initiative that gives money to churches. Religion is back out of the closet.
But nothing could do more to undermine this most salutary restoration than the new and gratuitous attempts to invade science, and most particularly evolution, with religion. Have we learned nothing? In Kansas, conservative school-board members are attempting to rewrite statewide standards for teaching evolution to make sure that creationism's modern stepchild, intelligent design, infiltrates the curriculum. Similar anti-Darwinian mandates are already in place in Ohio and are being fought over in 20 states. And then, as if to second the evangelical push for this tarted-up version of creationism, out of the blue appears a declaration from Christoph Cardinal Schönborn of Vienna, a man very close to the Pope, asserting that the supposed acceptance of evolution by John Paul II is mistaken. In fact, he says, the Roman Catholic Church rejects "neo-Darwinism" with the declaration that an "unguided evolutionary process--one that falls outside the bounds of divine
providence--simply cannot exist."
Cannot? On what scientific evidence? Evolution is one of the most powerful and elegant theories in all of human science and the bedrock of all modern biology. Schönborn's proclamation that it cannot exist unguided--that it is driven by an intelligent designer pushing and pulling and planning and shaping the process along the way--is a perfectly legitimate statement of faith. If he and the Evangelicals just stopped there and asked that intelligent design be included in a religion curriculum, I would support them. The scandal is to teach this as science--to pretend, as does Schönborn, that his statement of faith is a defense of science. "The Catholic Church," he says, "will again defend human reason" against "scientific theories that try to explain away the appearance of design as the result of 'chance and necessity,'" which "are not scientific at all." Well, if you believe that science is reason and that reason begins with
recognizing the existence of an immanent providence, then this is science. But, of course, it is not. This is faith disguised as science. Science begins not with first principles but with observation and experimentation.
In this slippery slide from "reason" to science, Schönborn is a direct descendant of the early 17th century Dutch clergyman and astronomer David Fabricius, who could not accept Johannes Kepler's discovery of elliptical planetary orbits. Why? Because the circle is so pure and perfect that reason must reject anything less. "With your ellipse," Fabricius wrote Kepler, "you abolish the circularity and uniformity of the motions, which appears to me increasingly absurd the more profoundly I think about it." No matter that, using Tycho Brahe's most exhaustive astronomical observations in history, Kepler had empirically demonstrated that the planets orbit elliptically.
This conflict between faith and science had mercifully abated over the past four centuries as each grew to permit the other its own independent sphere. What we are witnessing now is a frontier violation by the forces of religion. This new attack claims that because there are gaps in evolution, they therefore must be filled by a divine intelligent designer.
How many times do we have to rerun the Scopes "monkey trial"? There are gaps in science everywhere. Are we to fill them all with divinity? There were gaps in Newton's universe. They were ultimately filled by Einstein's revisions. There are gaps in Einstein's universe, great chasms between it and quantum theory. Perhaps they are filled by God. Perhaps not. But it is certainly not science to merely declare it so.
To teach faith as science is to undermine the very idea of science, which is the acquisition of new knowledge through hypothesis, experimentation and evidence. To teach it as science is to encourage the supercilious caricature of America as a nation in the thrall of religious authority. To teach it as science is to discredit the welcome recent advances in permitting the public expression of religion. Faith can and should be proclaimed from every mountaintop and city square. But it has no place in science class. To impose it on the teaching of evolution is not just to invite ridicule but to earn it.

Hey all, I just received a letter from Sideshow in response to the one
I snet last week asking for more Ape figures. They said that the line
was done because none of the fans have shown an interest BUT they would
consider picking it back up if the fans would let them know that they
wanted more Apes. So flood their office with email and regular mail
showing them that we want this line to continue.

Really! What are POTA fans feelings about this issue? I can't imagine POTA fans not thinking evolution is simply a scientific fact, but perhaps there are some who still rather believe that religion offers more of the truth.

It's really a question of tolerance. I don't understand at all why some religious people have a problem with evolution. Is it that it might lead the minds of children astray? Are the messages of religion so weak?

There's extra thrills in this extra-long installment of the Beneath adaptation. There are 15 pages of comics this week, as opposed to last week's 12 pages (that's a 25% increase with no increase in price), and they're needed for all the extra apes you get. The ape army is on the move while the mutants continue their interrogation of Brent, and there's a shock ending you won't see coming (unless you've already seen the film, of course).
Marvel UK issue 42 is now available to download from Hunter's site.

It just seems some fundamentalist Christians
will not accept evolution. They are however
perfectly willing to accept magic, as long as
it's from God. What's more magical than
creation is what I'd like to know. Hell, I
evolve on a daily basis. What makes them
think life is static? It's like Devo said.
God made man But he used the monkey to do it Apes in the

ape I can do what a monkey can do God made man But a monkey supplied

are a lot of intelligent people with faith. Science vs. faith? I
don't think there needs to be a contradiction. I think it's a

Great. When do you plan to get out there again? I believe the 38th
Anniversary of the last day of shooting on PLANET is August 10th.
Anyway, here's the first part of the "thing" I want to do to explain what I
think I've "figured out" about some of the very final shots in PLANET. It's
all I've had time to do in photoshop tonight. Hope to finish the rest of it
before the weekend, and I hope everyone can open the attached photo. When I'm
finished with the rest I guess they will be saved in the file section.

Hmmm. Is this a trick question?
There were no days before that. Maybe even a lack of "time" as we
know/record it.
Genesis 1
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the
earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of
the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw
the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the
darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called
Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
...But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is
with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.--
2 Peter 3:8

free to down load it and add to or take away from any part of it but
most of all PLEASE copy this letter or some type of letter and mail it
off to Sideshow. Without our help and our letting the Sideshow people
know that we want more Apes, I am afraid the Sideshow Ape line is done.
John
Thanks, John for doing this. I will definately be sending a letter since I
want the tv characters to be made. They did a great job with Ursus so I imagine
they could do a great sculpt of Urko. Elaine <.html

I got my regular version. It's pretty good. I may remove the flaps on
the helmet he came with and add some longer leather so that it drapes
around his shoulders. I also may repaint his hair to look darker.
Over all he's pretty good.

I was wondering when someone was going to catch that mistake!
Yes, I f**** up. When I first got a computer and was picking a screen
name for AOL, I was signing up and picked "Ursus". Of course that was
taken as well as "Ursus2", Ursus3", etc. So I decided to just jump
ahead and use the year that POTA takes place, NOT remembering the year
discrepancy between POTA and Beneath.

extensive they were...I'm wondering if there isn't a second matte
also, to the left and lower than your red line through the
cliffs...At any rate, I'm going to try and get to this beach Sunday
(I've already tried twice this week, and my schedule wouldn't
allow), and take some pictures...I'll try and get as close as I can to the angles in your
still, and we'll see what's what...
BTW, in the Statue of Liberty matte, the cliff is at Cornelius' dig
site...I'll try to get that shot, too...
Incidentally, there were no houses up on the ridge in the 60's, but
you could probably see from Malibu all the way out to LA...Also, in
both your stills, you will see tiny isles or rocky piles out in the
ocean, to the right...Two of them are actually bouys disguised as
isles!!

You may be right about that. I've never thought the cliff at the end of Zuma Beach, which is seen in ESCAPE, much looked like the one (or the partial one) at the end of PLANET. I would have to now guess that only the shots of Taylor and Nova riding up to the Statue, where the camera is titled down on them with the crown and torch props in the foreground atop the scaffolding, only that was shot on Zuma Beach. The reverse angle, the final matte shot, was taken within the cove where the digs set was -- I guess. Also, can you confirm, Glen, that this cove is known as "Pirate's Cove." My source is the CA State Park Website.
If you can get to the beach where the second matte shot is, which I believe is Point Dune County Beach, be sure to get shots of the point where you first see Taylor and Nova riding out of the surf. I'm talking about the shot that was later used behind the title credit for BENEATH. Try to get a shot from atop the cliff that matches the film.

That's right...If you watch the ending of POTA, there is a high shot
showing gorillas on horseback winding through a clifftop trail...This
is where the camera was set-up to shoot down over the Statue mock-up
and catch Taylor and Nova riding up...I'll try and get that shot,

Yes, Cornelius' dig site is also known as "Pirate's Cove", but I don't know why...It was a "clothing

I don't believe you are correct there. If you look at Roddy McDowall's Home Movies, you can see a scaffolding being constructed at the end of Zuma Beach. I believe they shot the prop crown and torch from atop it. I recall Bill Creber explaining this in the BEHIND documentary as well.

Ah! Yes, of course. The mockups of the crown and torch where mounted on the scaffold and the shot was taken from the cliff top. I never realized that clearly before. Now I see.

known as "Pirate's Cove" (Cornelius' dig site), then on the right is
what Rory called Point Dune (I don't know the name), this is where the
closing riding scene in POTA and the opening credits scene in BTPOTA were shot...

In files as: pointdumeexplained.jpg
Yes, that's it. Point Dume (or Pirate's Cove). I recognize the
crescent shape and the rocks at what I'm quessing is the north end of
the beach. There is a cave there near those rocks, maybe just a
hollow in the cliff, that I spent the night in many years ago. (I
think there were two -- one less shallow than the other.) In the
morning I learned it was a nude beach. A fellow called Radar kind of
took care of the beach and people gave him food, etc, for cleaning it
up. For what it is worth.
Thanks, Glen, for the trip down memory lane..
