Look at Rory's overhead photo in the files section (I don't know how to
link it)...On the left, is Zuma Beach, then there is Point Dume, also
known as "Pirate's Cove" (Cornelius' dig site), then on the right is
what Rory called Point Dune (I don't know the name), this is where the
closing riding scene in POTA and the opening credits scene in BTPOTA were shot...

Did I write "Point Dune"?  Of course, I meant "Point Dume."

Here's a photo where I've labeled the beaches and the cove.

I believe that the actual "Point Dume" is the larger land mass that makes up "Point Dume County" and, of course, the community of Point Dume, which is multimillion dollar homes and condos.  The rocky point that contains "Pirate's Cove" is technically called "Little Dume."

Yes, that's it.  Point Dume (or Pirate's Cove).  I recognize the
crescent shape and the rocks at what I'm quessing is the north end of
the beach.  There is a cave there near those rocks, maybe just a
hollow in the cliff, that I spent the night in many years ago.  (I
think there were two -- one less shallow than the other.)  In the
morning I learned it was a nude beach.  A fellow called Radar kind of
took care of the beach and people gave him food, etc, for cleaning it
up.  For what it is worth.

Thanks, Glen, for the trip down memory lane..

    Helen

You spent a night there?!!!  Alone?  Helen, that's a bit strange.

In fact as I recall someone
was afraid to go up on the
    scaffolding until someone
    else went up there. Anyone
    remember what that was?

I have had the same problem in the pass. I emailed Sideshow and
complained and they sent me out a new box with the stickers to seal
it. I would email them or call them if you wanted to keep him in the
    box

Identify the movie that featured the following celluloid simians.

This is just for fun guys, it's by no means extensive, some may
have more than one answer and there's no prize - unless
anyone wants a group shot of the Simian Scrolls production
    team, topless.

    I just love this thread!

I´m very interested in all the behind the scenes topics.

    Now I say:

Can somebody identify the exact point where the camera was?

Can somebody do a photo from the same angle?

Could be interesting see the now and then. Also we can composite the
    photo with the actual screengrab.

    Take care.

It would be nice to do that.  When I visited Lake Powell in 1987 I stood where the camera was in at least one shot in the early part of the film.  Unfortunately I didn't take a still photo of it.

I've thought of having James capture still images of shots of and from Ape City showing the features of the land around it in Malibu Creek State Park (what was the "Century" or "Fox" Ranch).  I'd then point out features in these shots in photoshop and e-mail them to Glen who could then print them out and take them to the Park and try to find the exact spots where the camera was, BUT it's a lot to ask of Glen.

Anyway, in the meantime here's something else attached that uses one of Glen's shots from "Pirate's Cove."  I think you'll find this interesting.

      Subject: OT: Old "King Kong"
      .html
      .html

Still no word on a new POTA movie, so we'll have to take our classic apes where we can find them. Warner Home Video has announced the details on their DVD release of Arthur Jacobs' favorite movie, "King Kong". It's being released on November 22nd.
First of all, the movie which has been rumored to look gorgeous for awhile. Warner's George Feltenstein talked to "the Hollywood Reporter", saying they've wanted to release "Kong" on DVD since 1997 when the format started. But, he says, "we didn't have good film elements". Kong's original distributor, RKO Radio Pictures, was sold in 1957 and the rights to it's films were scattered to the wind. The studio's library was not maintained and now the original negative to "Kong" no longer exists. He said they went on a "worldwide search for the earlier nitrate materials. And it literally took eight years to get the right film elements. We wound up using several different nitrate sources from archives in Europe so we could make the best possible master and then put them through our own restoration process. Nothing was here in the United States - - nothing of any decency".
Then there's the extras on the 2-disc set. Peter Jackson stepped up to the plate and wanted to help out, despite this DVD being released by Warners and his remake being made by Universal (Feltenstein insists the DVD is being released now because it finally came together and that Jackson's new movie is "actually a coincidence"). Jackson is at work on the 2 hour, 7 part DVD documentary "RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World" which will be the main feature of the extras. "Fans of this film are going to go crazy; we've got everything but the kitchen sink on here".  A section of the doc will focus on the famous lost "spider pit" sequence. "For years, there has always been speculation - - does this footage exist? - - so we have a piece that actually explains what it was and we do a recreation of it. For fans of the film, that's a big, important thing". Reportedly, Jackson's remake revisits this sequence, too. The DVD will also include a documentary on "Kong" creator and director Merian C. Cooper, a trailer gallery of Cooper's other films, and commentary tracks from FX legend Ray Harryhausen, actress Terry Moore ("Mighty Joe Young") and famed FX guy Ken Ralston ("Star Wars"). It's a damn shame they didn't do a commentary track with Fay Wray before she died recently, but that's show biz. A commentary track with Jackson would be good. Maybe? I know he shows his collection in an extra.
Now for the editions. You can buy the standard 2-disc set. Or you can buy the set in a collectible tin with a 20 -page reproduction of the original souvenir program, postcard reproductions of the original one sheets and an offer to mail in for a reproduction of a vintage 27-by-41 " movie poster. OR you can buy a 4-disc set that comes with "Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young" ("Joe" will have extras, too). So, November 22nd. Jackson's remake comes out around Dec. 14. - - - Jeff

Of course the sculpts are different from Cornelius to Cornelius to Caesar to Galen.  Different sculptors of the appliances worked on the different films.  Also note that the gorilla sculpts in PLANET AND BENEATH are for the most part different from those of CONQUEST, BATTLE and the TV series.

Oh, I know that.  In fact, it's probably best if you wait until next year to visit the rock pool again, and then only after a week of rain!

If memory serves me correctly (you never know!), John Chambers slowly
released control, and Dan Streipek (sp) took over make-up...That is
probably one reason for the different sculpts...Also, the hydrocal (sp)
      they used for the base molds would eventually break down from the heat;
and they did have to make a new appliance every day through a shoot...

      2: Evolved monkeys *POTA*

3: Zombie monkey *Pirates of the Caribbean*

5: Poisoned monkey *Raiders of the Lost Ark*

6: Hotel-guest monkey *Dunston checks in*

      7: Dice-roll monkey *Jumanji*

      9: Huge monkey *King Kong*

      Tarzan films)

      12: Ebola ridden monkey *Outbreak*

13: Flying monkey *The Wizard of OZ*

14: marooned on another planet monkey *Robinson Crusoe on
      Mars*

15: Picture painting, talking monkey *Congo*

16: Harryhausan monkey *Mighty Joe Young* (Or 'Sinbad and the
eye of the tiger' - the prince is turned into a baboon)

17 monolith enhanced monkey *2001 A Space Odyssey*

19 Diane Fossey's monkeys *Gorillas in the Mist *

      20 Invisible-to-visible monkey *Hollow man*

      Still looking for:

4: Drug Dealer's monkey ("The most dangerous creature known
      to man")

8: Full-of-rage monkey (someone said 'Primal rage' but that's not
      the answer I have here.)

10: malevolent, guide-dog like monkey. (She starts off rather
      sweet)

18 Super-rare Rat monkey ("I kick ass for the Lord!")

Before I get strung up I didn't make this up - I copied it from a

Does anyone have them that would be willing to send some scans? I have
tried alot of places but the pics i see don't always come out very well
which i can only assume is due to the original scans being too low in

Here's the third "matte shot" in PLANET. This one doesn't involve anything
at or around Point Dume, but it's interesting just the same.

I've looked at the shot of the model Icarus sinking beneath the "inland sea
of the eastern desert," and I've wondered if it might contain matted in
elements, but it looks to me like it's just a painted backdrop in the tank. However,
        I could be wrong.

Okay, I went to Point Dume/Zuma Beach today, and spent over two hours
hiking all over, and risking my neck on treacherous cliffs -- and
even trespassing -- to get what I could of the shots you requested,
          Rory...=)

I sent them on to James, because I'm too "computer-stupid" to post
them...As he gets the time, he'll put them in the files...

The angle of Taylor and Nova's ending ride up the beach was
impossible to duplicate, as there are houses along that cliff,
now...I did the best I could from the cliffside...Sorry...

I got a couple of shots from where the gorillas are shooting at
Taylor at the digs (both angles)...

I got a couple of sequential shots from the bluff where they shot
down over the Statue mock-up...I got the top of the bluff, as
well...And the angle looking into "Pirate's Cove' from the bluff...

I got a couple of the angle where the matte of the Statue was
          inserted...

I think the ending ride beach of Point Dume was the same beach used
in "Tomorrow's Tide", BTW, and I got a few of them, too...

I do not know if anyone has posted these commercials to any of our sites. If some could tell me how to do it I would be more than happy to do it. The quality is fair to good. Thanks for the time.

There will be hi-res files available on Hunter's site within a week for the new TV cards. Like the movie sets, the cards will be arranged in 9-card panels that fit easily on 8-1/2 x 11 sheets. If you have a photo-quality printer you should be able to print the fronts on photo paper, the backs on card stock, glue the sheets together and then cut the panels down into individual cards. Alternately I suppose you could use nearly any image editing program to crop the hi-res files down to individual cards and then use those cropped files with whatever software you use to layout and print business cards.

Thanks, Glen, but Neil has already provided the wrapper art for the Return set. The cardbacks will be puzzles similar to the original TV series set, using panoramic scenes.

I scan everything that is ape-related in the issues, leaving out the other Marvel comics stories and the ads (I've scanned a few ads for ape merchandise, but only the first time that ad appears, leaving it out when it appears in subsequent issues). I'm guessing here that the references to pin-ups in the letter columns refer to the color photos that appear on some of the back covers as well as the black and white full-page photos that occasionally appear. There have also been some pages with several photos (there were several with photos from the TV series a few weeks back). All of these would qualify as pin-up pages and they've always been included in the PDFs when they've appeared in the issue.

I don't specifically recall there being any artwork pin-ups in the issues I've scanned so far. If there are any in future issues, they will be included.

Once again, these are really fun, thanks for your
efforts!  One question I have is that in the letter
collumns of several issues, pin-ups were mentioned -
are those referring to the photos included with the
text articles, or are there artwork pin-ups that
          aren't in these scans?

Just saw a new box set in MVC (Uk).
It is a box set of the original film (DVD) and the book ?
The it doesn’t say whether it is Monkey planet or an adaption of the film script. The cover looks like the anniverary artwork.
Anyone know more about thisrelease or have I missed a few
           postings?

I posted the original message. I will find out tomorrow or at the weekend what this set was. It is Planet of the apes with a novel version (Monkey Planet? or a version of the film I have not read before I don,t know) I will find out more. MVC are a music and dvd type shop that you join and get things a bit cheaper the more you shop. Maybe it is a special box set for them , it has been known at HMV and the likes.

REVOLUTION ON THE PLANET OF THE APES:

Scripts by: Ty Templeton, Joe O'Brien

Art by: Max Douglas, Attila Adorjany, Bernie Mireault

For the last twenty four hours, there have been rumours and
unofficial reports that San Diego is in flames, that the governor of
California is dead, and that the cause of all this chaos is a
talking ape named Caesar. But when the President of the United
States announces that the whole thing is a hoax, no one knows what
to believe, until a Pentagon reporter named Nora Rhodes decides to
go to San Diego and find the truth for herself.

Can Nora survive in New Ape City? Can Caesar survive the gorilla
rebellion? And can humanity survive a war that fate tells us we
          cannot win?

MR COMICS brings the ORIGINAL PLANET OF THE APES back in a six
issue mini featuring Caesar, Aldo, Dr. Zaius, Cornelius, the
Lawgiver, Zira, Colonel Taylor, and other characters from the
          classic film series.

Each comic contains TWO simian packed stories, with scripts by
Eisner-Award winning author Ty Templeton (Spider-Man Human Torch,
Simpsons, Batman Adventures) and Joe O'Brien (Robocop: Prime
Directives). Artists include acclaimed illustrator Max Douglas
(Wonder Woman, Dr. Strange) hot new penciller Tom Fowler (Green
Arrow, Star Wars), digital painter Attila Adorjany (Beowulf), Eisner-
nominated colourist Bernie Mireault, and others. With dramatic
          painted covers by Denis Rodier.
