Wow! There's some major talent involved here. I have a hunch that our apes are going to
look like apes - about bloody time too - and painted covers! And there I was thinking I
was running out of things to 'restore'.

Bring it on - let's get this party started, make mine Mr Comics!

Hi Rob,

It really depends on what your view on this kind of book is... On one hand it does collect
together illustrations of an impressive number of vintage items that you're not likely to see
'in the flesh' so to speak. (although you can probably view them on eBay) On the other it
also illustrates way too many one-of-a-kind items (T shirts, dolls etc). Item's whose worth
and interest will be highly subjective.

As a guide to values it's next to useless - we all know these things are only worth what
someone is willing to pay for them.

Rob, Dave's spot on when he says that some of the items in the
collector's book are one off obscurities.Still, over all, I'd say it's
worth having as an Apes fan, as it is a ready lap top trip down memory
lane. Some of the photos are really good, although they can all pretty
much be found elsewhere. It's also now a bit out of date, given all of
the new figures, cards etc.Simian Scrolls was sent a review copy ages
ago and I forgot to review it.Oops! John, Scrolls.

Restored Movie Monsters Issue 2, February 1975

The restored cover of Movie Monsters issue 2, featuring a
painting of Dr. Zaius, is now available for download.
The artwork has been lovingly 'restored', eliminating the logos
and wording from the image.

The art is by Greg Theakston, who also did the cover art for issue
9 of the black & white Marvel Planet of the Apes magazine.

It leaves out a lot of the actual APES collectibles, and has a large part of it devoted to bootlegged APES T-shirts... You can see just about everything in the book on eBay, so there's nothing really outstanding/rare in it. It's a very basic book.

I picked it up quite some time ago, and in fact went to visit the author
a few times over the past couple of years. I think it's a good book to
have. My only complaint is that he included a lot of photos of custom
made items, and the officially produced/released stuff is often relegated
to lists. There's a whole section of trivia in the beginning as well.

Hope this helps.

If you send me a blank DVD-R with a self-addressed stamped envelope to
return it to you, I'll burn a copy for you.

This offer is open to anyone in the group for either the Extended

That is now a superb addition to the Marvel covers---suddenly we have
thirty! I'd never realised that Theakston did this one.Makes you
wonder, given the date, whether this one was originally intended for
Marvel, and also whether he did a Chimp one to complete the
species.Beautiful restoration Dave. John, Scrolls.

Terrific, that was my guess, thanks for confirming, and thanks again
for doing such a great job! If I could bother you with a more general
question, I was wondering if you know of any comprehensive guide to
the Marvel UK comics in general to which you could point me, not just
POTA which has been so well mapped out in the database section of this
very site but Cap Britain, Super Spiderman, Star Wars Weekly, etc...

Hello
I am considering writing a fan fiction telling the story of the Mendez
family, how the first Mendez was born, then the nuclear war, and how
his descendants try to survive alongside the Alpha Omega Doomsday Bomb.
I was wondering if anyone could provide any information on the House of
Mendez etc to help with the project ?
Many thanks

The article I read in Simian Scrolls issue 6 that first started me on my search to get every issue of the Marvel UK Apes comic was written by Rob Kirby, and was an excerpt from an upcoming book he was writing on the history of Marvel UK. A very cursory search on Google and Amazon didn't find any evidence the book was ever published, but you may want to do some searches of your own.

the Marvel UK comics in general to which you could point me, not just
POTA which has been so well mapped out in the database section of this
very site but Cap Britain, Super Spiderman, Star Wars Weekly, etc...

Not much aside from what is seen in the movies, but you might wish to check
out the four issue miniseries "Forbidden Zone" that was published by
Adventure Comics in the early 90s, as it covered some of this story if I
remember correctly.

And you might want to read the two novels and the different screenplay
drafts for "BTPOTA" and "BFTPOTA", to get as much as info as there is...

Its basically going to be the full story of how they got hold of the bomb, how they became radiation scarred mutants in the first place, how their relationship with the apes went awry and also why the hell they worship the Bomb

The Forbidden Zone Miniseries   is this on the Net on goatleys site ?

These "questions" you're posing are all answered in the films:

The bomb was in their city anyway.

They became radiation scarred mutants by living in the remains of the radioactive city.

Their relationship with the apes was nonexistent. The apes were the slaves and the humans the masters. It's not like they had a peaceful coexistence and suddenly something went wong with it. They had always been enemies.

And as far as how they came to worship the bomb, they worship it as an instrument of peace, for it's "ancestors" made them what they are...

Dear All,

Fox are releasing box sets of Planet of the apes, Fight club and other classic films that have the original books in with the dvd in a box set. The Planet of the apes has a new print of Monkey Planet in the Orange anniversary artwork cover.
So mystery solved I hopw. I might buy it when it comes down in price as they all do sooner or later.

P.s. Don't know if there are any extras on the dvd as you can't tell which burn of the dvd it might be without opening the package.

.html
Hi-res files, suitable for printing, of the TV series card set are now available to download from Hunter's site.

Additionally, the 142 screen captures that I did for the set are available as well. These can be downloaded as either a single zip file, or individually.

Some have had problems extracting the files from the zips of the movie captures. Hunter used Info-ZIP's Zip V2.31 to create them and has had no problem unzipping with both UnZip v5.42 and WinRAR (and I've had no problem using WinRAR myself). We have no idea why others have any problems, but there are so many "zip" clients out there, there's no telling which ones are buggy. We didn't think anybody would want to download that many image files individually and that most people would want them all anyway (hence the zips), but for this set we're trying out the idea of making the images available individually to see how it goes.

Thanks,
Greg

    NO!!!!

I saw it in it's first release.  The only thing I swear I saw the first time I saw PLANET, on April 7, 1968, was the words "The End" on the upper right of the screen just before the fade out, but I know I just imagined it later.

Anyway, he's got lots and lots of them, so many it's hard to see if he has many POTA items. But there is a good shot of a Sideshow Dr. Zauis in his hand (when he should've been holding something else), and I also saw a Zauis model kit on the bed when he almost lost the title condition.
Anyway, this is a good comedy, it's very much a guy sex comedy but it has heart too, which sets it apart. Looks to be the # 1 movie of the week.

The mutants are interesting for sure. Maybe more so than the apes. Its
too bad the latter three movies are so awful, because there is such a
big untold backststory in the first two. The rise of the apes and the
decline of man don't necessarily have to be related events, or even
happen at the same time. The apes could have gained intelligence
gradually, two or three hundred years after a brutal nuclear war. As
far as the Mendez cult goes, I see it starting off as a form of
apocolypse Christianity, and gradually morphing into bomb worship as
the level of physical mutation becomes more pronounced.

The way I imagine it is a very gradual process. First is the
nuclear/biological war that killed off most of the human population.
The whole infastructure is destroyed. There is no more oil, very little
food, medicine...etc. The survivors are isolated into different
communities, and alot die off from sickness or starvation. In the big
cities they moved underground to escape the radiation. There would be
physical deformities, like people being born without noses, and then
some people wearing fake noses, or other kinds of prostetics. Some of
the women might probabally have been the first to outright wear masks.
Serious physical mutations ( the grotesque ) would be purged out, and
the early telepaths might have kept their abilities a secret, just out
of fear. Eventually the telepaths gain the upper hand, and then purge
out the non-telapathic ( like in the Forbidden Zone comic ).

Good points. If you look at the mutants in Battle as the beginning
of the process and the mutants in Beneath as the end result, than it
was a gradual process that took centuries.

BTW does anyone else think that Dehn ripped off the idea of the
    mutants from Star Trek?

The Mendez dynasty has always interested me. It's a great pity that the
version of Battle released was so edited, as the fuller version really
throws a lot of light on the origin of the Mendez line and the,
apparently, genuinely peaceful motives of the first Mendez.Does the
fact that the first Mendez clearly knows the capability of the Alpaha
Omega Bomb mean that this was a secret known only to his successors?
The whole Mutant back story is a fruitful source for speculation.Johnm,

Hi John, Thought that the imminent arrival of new comics was a
good enough reason to break my "lurking status" :) I must admit as
    the
release becomes nearer I find my self looking forward to them.As you
might recall I was never that great a fan of the Adventure comics
    (nor
the art on the Dark Horse 2001 version)so I have high hopes that
    these
will be better ,but you know I just long for the wild days of Ploog
    and Sutton :)

    All the best Graham Hill.

Glenn, I agree that is one of the great untapped resources for Apes---
just how did Man fall so far, so quick. Marvel set a story just Before

it's the Apes we want to know about! John, Scrolls.

Or what if the bomb was never actually detonated. The mutants could
have killed the apes easily, just through mass mental hypnosis, but
they were prevented from doing it by their own religion. They
couldn't kill, but they could get their enemies to kill each other.
So they needed someone else to detonate the bomb, or at least
to "imagine" he did, and they could pass that imagination of death
    onto the ape army.

In fact all the events from Escape-Battle could likewise have been
just a false history planted into the ape survivors, something to
keep them out of the forbidden zone forever.

I seem to recall a reference in the rather poor horror film "House of 1000
Corpses" to someone getting "a Dr Zaius figure st*ck *p his *ss". I'm not
sure that even Zaius himself could find words to describe that situation.

I don't think so - the idea of nuclear-based mutants and things like that
were around long before Star Trek. I do wonder if he maybe got any
inspiration from the TV series "The Prisoner" though - the final episode
featured a bunch of people worshipping a nuclear bomb. Anyone know any dates
as to when the various drafts of the Beneath script were written?

there more specific info on the exact locations in the park,
particularly the Ape village and the pond where the astronauts first
see the humans. For example, once I enter the park from the main
entrance where do I go from there to see these location? Any specific
info on this would be great.
Also, does anyone know if the cornfield in which the astronauts
observe the humans and which a few moments later they first encounter
the apes, still exists? Can I still visit that area or has it changed
or been grown over etc. Thanks again.

I think the trap that hopefully they'll avoid is just being about
