Hello Everyone,
I am in a remote location in North Carolina having fled the Forbidden Zone that is currently South Florida. I left the day after the storm. There was no power or water and the destruction is such that it may be a couple weeks before things are back to normal. It's only been four days. Why stay and suffer? My APES collection survived fine and is save. Meanwhile I'll just sit up here in the mountains and wait until the power is back on.
See you all later.

I noticed it too!
Given that I'm prone to spending unhealthy amounts of time in the
cinema, the folks at work often ask me about films that are on at the
moment. When asked about "I, Robot" I told at least three people that
it was just "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" with robots.
I was of course greeted with blank looks all round since nobody knew
anything about "Conquest". Philistines.

ocean waves on her audio tape, and got to thinking about Taylor and
Nova riding peacefully up the shoreline. No airplanes, motorboats.
No sailboats. No people. No birds. Nothing. And then, out of the
blue, all of a sudden they spy the Statue O' L. Well, seems a little
odd that: 1) Taylor draws the conclusion that it was nuclear war that
destroyed the planet and 2) that there wasn't ANYTHING else around as
evidence of a city and/or any other type of human civilization. (They
kind of sped things up a bit there with that final bit of monologue.)

Earlier in the movie, when he's arguing with Zaius on the beach, he says ( working from
memory here) "Man may have been wiped out by a plague or a natural catastrophe. Like a
storm of meteors. From the looks of some parts of this planet, I'd say that was a fair bet."
My take is that Taylor was a man influenced by the events of the '60's, and for him nuclear
war was the 'in' way of being obliterated. The Cuban Missile crisis wasn't that long ago and
still in the public mind so I guess Taylor's conclusion was just a combination of
assumption, (because of the times he had been living in - and was hoping to escape from)
and being more than a little upset.
At a time of great stress he reverted to type.
In Beneath, Brent makes the same assumption based upon a subway sign, so I guess if you
can accept the above, the same applies to him.

.htmlI have to agree with Dave here. Taylor (and Brent) came from the culture of the cold war when is seemed nuclear annihilation could happen at any day. So it is natural that is their first assumption. What's interesting is that before Taylor knows he is back on Earth, he gives the humans of that world the benefit of the doubt and doesn't consider that they wiped each other out. As he noted to Dr. Zaius "There were no weapons found in that cave". I've often felt that below his misanthrope exterior, Taylor is a closet optimist. Consider this: - He makes the radio transmission to Earth in the beginning of the film assuming mankind has survived past the 20th century.
- He tells Landon that if he got back to Earth he would look like something that fell out of a tree, again assuming that mankind had evolved to a higher form.
It is only when he sees the statue that he realizes what had happened to his culture. If he had been a true misanthrope, he would have expected as much and shrugged it off. But instead he is almost crushed by the realization. This also leads to another question about Taylor, did he go on the mission with hopes of returning to earth when man had evolved into a culture he would be more comfortable with? And did seeing the Statue finally crush that dream?

In the spaceship at the beginning of the movie, I got the impression, Taylor didn't expect to return to earth(in his own time anyways). My guess is that seeing the statue would crush a dream of returning to earth unless he felt there was someway of going back in time to prevent what happened. Elaine

That is the most heartwrenching thought ever, Elaine. I think you are
on to something very heavy, even though I'm not sure it was a thought
that was written into the movie.

Taylor's mission is only ever hinted at - when he says that Stewart
was to have been 'the new Eve' but three boys and one girlie does not
a viable gene-pool make. More likely an advance scouting mission that
may, or may not have ever meant to return?
Whatever the mission may have been I think Taylor's personal motives
are made quite clear in his opening monologue and his exchanges with
Landon - he's on a personal quest to find something 'better than man'.
When he doesn't - when he's forced into the role of mankinds defender
and spokesperson he comes to realize that maybe those he left behind
weren't quite so bad after all. "they were better than you' he tells
Zaius. I don't think he ever believes he will find a way home but I
think that he comes to believe that what he left behind was actually
something quite special. When he sees the Statue he realizes that
Zaius - and his own original perception of mankind - were right all
along. For a short while he changed his mind and believed in his own
species - The sight of the statue shattered those new-found beliefs.

.htmlExcept that novelizations are really not canon. And even more so in Jakes case since he wrote the noveliztion two years after the movie was made. It was just Jakes interpetation of Dehn's script, the way the Marvel comics were their interpetation of Dehn's scripts. It's funny that no one ever cites Gerrod's novelization of Battle which pretty much confirms that it's a circular timeline, that the Ape and Mutant communities seen in Battle are the same ones in Beneath. Thus, on the East Coast. And Gerrold was on the set of Battle and had the opportunity to consult with Dehn.

CONQUEST set in New York?!!!! That's crazy talk. Where was the Empire State Building in CONQUEST? Where were all the other skyscrapers, the Statue of Liberty, or the stink from New Jersey?
NO! CONQUEST is set in a fictional "city state," part of a future megalopolis that, I think, is on the East Coast, since the ape and mutant societies seen in BATTLE are clearly supposed to be ancestors of those seen in PLANET and BENEATH, and it can be seen clearly in BATTLE that the ape city of that time is in the woods just next to the meadow that 2000 years later would be the cornfield seen in PLANET.

.html Well, just because we don't see Liberty etc, doesn't mean it can't be
New York. The movie is set in a new, futuristic area which may be masked
from the older, landmark areas.Apart from the novel, I'm not aware of
any clues in Conquest, but I could be wrong on that. You could argue
that the biggest clues are in Battle and Beneath--Beneath definitely is
New York and Battle seems to be the origin of that civilisation of
Mutants.Purely on the films alone, the evidence supports Alan. John,
Scrolls. <.html

I don't agree or disagree, but I'm wondering why we couldn't assume
that the Apes "cleaned house" and (assuming there were more Apes
than those shown in the movies) took down the remnants of human
civilization early on. Someone must have, or it would be pretty
difficult to pull off an "Apes were always superior to humans" type
of propaganda such as Zaius and his predecessors did. I figure it
wasn't the bomb that took everything out.
Considering the condition of the statue (and the fact that it is not
on an island but on the shore) it is possible that a resulting
tsunami or like event could have reshaped the landscape -- making
identification of landmarks somewhat sketchy.
It seems that there may have been fewer Apes out west where Virdon
and Burke showed up. Maybe they hadn't been able to tear down the
buildings and remove all the human "stuff", which may be why the
humans were never completely dull-ified.
Or not.

.htmlWanted! More covers that actually reflect the interior stories. While the cover of this week's issue is more faithful than last week's Conquest-flavored cover, it still doesn't accurately reflect the adaptation chapter of Escape From the Planet of the Apes that's contained in this issue. I'm guessing, however, that a cover image of Zira enjoying grape-juice plus would not have been a big seller and might have raised some hackles among parents.
Photo fans will find a full-page image of Zira in this issue, dropped into the middle of the adaptation chapter. There's also a montage of Roddy McDowall photos on the last page that promotes a feature in next week's issue (despite the fact that the copy on the page says it's in this week's issue). Letter column fans also have reason to rejoice this week.

I found this:
Back in the sixties in the pages of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee would occasionally award some
lucky (?) reader what he called a "no prize." It might be in a letter column or it might be in
the house ad section called the Bullpen Bulletins. The reader might have made some
extraordinary contribution to the cause of Marvel, or he might just have found some dumb
error in an issue and called it to Stan's attention. Whatever the location, whatever the
meritorious conduct, it warranted the same reward: A "no prize," as in, "You get no prize."
I gather this was kind of a running joke on the old Jean Shepherd radio programs and Stan
kept it going, but I never heard enough of Mr. Shepherd to know the derivation for certain.
Anyway, some readers were gleeful that Stan had awarded them a "no prize," and some
didn't understand and they'd write in and say, "I haven't received it." Around 1967, I'm
guessing, Stan took the joke to the next level and began actually sending out...well, I'm
not sure if you could say he sent out "no prizes" because there was no such thing. But he
sent out empty envelopes that said they contained your no prizes. Above is a pic of one of
these envelopes -- a later version, judging from the return address -- which sported
lettering by Marvel's ace letterer at the time, Sam Rosen. Someone wrote and asked me
about them so I thought I'd post this for all the world to see. There was something very
charming and clever about the whole concept, and it was part of what made Marvel Comics
feel like a company run by your buddies. <.html

mistake in a comic---'Spider-man has two arms this issue whereas, in
issue #23, Doctor Octopus clearly rips them both off'-- sort of thing.I
think, originally, empty envelopes were posted to the lucky winners
(collectors hunt these on ebay!) but after a while it really became a
letters page thing, with the award being bestowed in the answer to a
letter.Happier, more innocent,days.John, Scrolls. <.html

It was an empty envelope. A friend who worked at Marvel some years ago gave me one. The outside of the envelope had a message printed on it announcing that contained inside was your fabulous no-prize, and of course when you opened it there was nothing inside. The real prize was the envelope itself, with your name written on it by a real Marvel intern (or armadillo).
