James, that's a wonderful effort to arrange the onloine chat wih Joe.It
should be a blast and I'm going to apologise in advance as I'll not be
able to join in.I hope as many people as possible CAN participate
because this could be a regular thing. We don't often get the chance to
talk to the creators beforehand, so don't waste this opportunity folks!

Sure, no problem! See, it takes place in Australia, right outside Botany
Bay. And it all started when a superchimp named Kahn Noonian Caesar said
"no" to his human masters, then went on to conquer most of the planet with
the rest of his superbreed, who were genetically bred by a bunch of
ambitious scientists. Following the deadly Eugenics Wars, which turned
most of the continent's major cities into radioactive Forbidden Zones, Kahn
and his fellow uberchimps were exiled in space in Colonel Taylor's old
ship, the Icarus. They wandered space for three hundred years in suspended
animation until a spacefaring mutant name Menkirk XVII found the Icarus and
woke them up, not realizing who Kahn Noonian Caesar was. Kahn nearly
succeeded in taking over Menkirk's ship but was ultimately defeated and
exiled on the planet Sequel Fodder Five. Twenty years later, Kahn Caesar
returned to vent his wrath upon the galaxy...but there hangs the Genesis of
another story.

John, I need to up my meds a little, I think...=)

As I said earlier, IMHO, the "Conquest" city was probably a suburb of
New York City

I agree, James! Super idea! I will have to do a lot of overdue

So soarry to you and others who couldn't get in. There was a lot of
trouble with Yahoo's chat function tonight and some who got in could
only observe. Others were booted. But is was a great hour or so with
both Joe and Ty Templeton.
The good news is that they had a great time and Joe has emailed me that
he'd like to do it again after the comic comes out to get fan feedback.

That is good news. I haven't had trouble with the chat feature before
(on this computer), so I am quite sure it was a bad hair day for Yahoo!
It looks like you had a busy and interesting exchange. I hope someone
will post a sort of "wrap up."

Subject: Last Night's Chat with Joe & Ty - Recap
.html

Last night we had a wonderful online chat with both writers of the new POTA comic, "Revolution on the Planet of the Apes", Joe O'Brien & Ty Templeton. We were only expecting Joe and were pleasantly surprized when Ty joined us at the last minute.

Unfortunately there were several technical problems with Yahoo's chatroom function. Many members couldn't access the chatroom. Some were able to get in but only observe and not ask questions. And all of us that got in were booted from the room at one time or another, twice myself. Another problem was that the chat room wouldn't allow cutting & pasting of questions that were emailed or IMed to me nor would it allow us to save the chat.

However, despite these problems those who were able to attend had a great time and so did our guests. Joe emailed me afterwards and would like to do it again after to the first issue comes out. Also, I'm emailing him all the questions sent to me by members and he promised to email answers back to post in the group.

To recap some of the highpoints:

  • The original concept for the comic was a war between Caesar and Thade. Fox wouldn't approve that so they eliminated Thade and kept the Caesar story.
  • Many of the characters seen in Conquest and Battle will be featured including Lisa & Aldo. There was even some discussion if Lisa was the Chimp in the Mating Room in Conquest.
  • Their favorite characters from the original films are Caesar, Zaius & Hasslein. They've been able to work in both Caesar and Zaius and would like to find a way to work in Hasslein. They are also big James Franciscus/Brent fans.
  • There will be a side story in one of the issues about Little Caesar and Armando. They joked that they wanted Little Caesar to go into the pizza business.
  • There are no plans at the moment to do anything in the TV series timeframe. However, that may change if they go beyond the six-issue mini-series.
  • Going beyond the mini-series depends on fan reaction not only sales. So please be sure to write letters and emails to MR when they come out.

I'm sure there is a lot that I'm missing but I was busy fielding emails and IMs from those who couldn't get in to the chatroom. Those that got in please feel free to add anything that I missed.

Subject: Questions

Joe,

Here are some of the questions members emailed and IMed me last night. I apologize if some of these topics were already covered in the chat.

Will this series be collected for a trade paperback, and, if so, will there be any extras?

How hopeful can we be of more series?

Have you seen the Extended version of BATTLE and did it influence your story at all?

How much freedom did you have with your scripts---Marvel seem to have had some problems with clearing certain things with Fox.

Please, please, please can we have at least one short story based on the TV Series!

Was black and white ever considered or was it always going to be a color book?

Would you be allowed to re-visit the Marvel sagas, Terror and Future History Chronicles,or would that be outside your license?

Did you ever see the Malibu/Adventure series, which, for all its faults, ran for 24 regular issues and several mini series?

Will we see Ty Templeton's art on any of these strips---your work on Spider-Man-Human Torch(especially your rendition of Black Cat!) has left us panting for more!

Do you have any idea how grateful us Apes fans are to you guys for bringing Apes back?

How did Metallic Rose start?

Whose idea was it to do a POTA comic?

How did they sell 20th on the idea?

How was the talent assembled?

Why did they choose the timeframe between "Conquest" and " Battle "?

How will they decide whether or not they do more POTA comics after this series?

How easy (or difficult) was it to obtain the POTA licence?

Do FOX have much of a say in what you can and cannot do?

Has there ever been any hint from FOX of new APES projects (other than your own) being in development

Who are Mr Comics and how are they different from Metallic Rose?

Is ?Revolution? still set in an alternate version of the 90?s?

Can you give any hints for what may be in the pipeline

You helped resurrect the RoboCop franchise for TV - Have you any similar plans for APES?
I think that is all of them.  Thanks again to you and Ty for taking the time to do the chat and answer our questions.

It was unfortunate that Yahoo had so many problems. One thing about the
chat feature, if you have a Mac or older version of Windows it will not
work on your computer. It is a shame that members who wanted to
participate could not because of computer problems.

However, we did have a great time with our guests and wound up going a half hour overtime.

Yeah, but Ty also seems to have an affection for the pota2001 also... If he didn't, he wouldn't have wanted to do something with the pota2001 characters initially, until FOX said "No" to the idea... If FOX hadn't nixed the idea, right now, we'd be hearing about an all new comic starring Thade...

Honestly, I think they were trying to find the most exciting storyline
possible, and their first choice, pitting Caesar against Thade after
the events in COTPOTA and POTA2001, seemed a good idea...I get the
impression that they like what they came up with more, though...

James asked me to add anything I remember, that he might have missed,
from that great hour and a half chat we had with two of the creators
of the new POTA comic, "Revolution on the Planet of the Apes", Joe
O'Brien and Ty Templeton, so here goes:

> To recap some of the highpoints:
> The original concept for the comic was a war between Caesar and
Thade. Fox wouldn't approve that so they eliminated Thade and kept
the Caesar story.
At first, Fox liked it, but in the end, didn't want this POTA venture
to have anything to do with the Burton film...They also said that
their original idea with Thade and Caesar was about as imaginative as
what we've seen so far of this finished product...
> Many of the characters seen in Conquest and Battle will be featured
including Lisa & Aldo. There was even some discussion if Lisa was the
Chimp in the Mating Room in Conquest.
There was also a hint of seeing the Lawgiver, but "not like you'd

> Their favorite characters from the original films are Caesar, Zaius
& Hasslein. They've been able to work in both Caesar and Zaius and
would like to find a way to work in Hasslein. They are also big James
Franciscus/Brent fans.
They hinted at having a future story that involved Hasslein, if they
go beyond issue #6...They have Cornelius, Zira, Zaius, Caesar, Aldo
and Lisa, plus Taylor and I think Brent, in these six issues...
> There will be a side story in one of the issues about Little Caesar
and Armando. They joked that they wanted Little Caesar to go into the
pizza business.
Lil' Caesar's -- pizza-pizza -- oh, you had to be there...These guys
were funny...
> There are no plans at the moment to do anything in the TV series

mini-series.
They said they wanted to "explore" an idea of going beyond
Beneath...This could be an alternate universe idea...
> Going beyond the mini-series depends on fan reaction not only
sales. So please be sure to write letters and emails to MR when they
come out.
They read every e-mail they get, so please write them...There will
also be a snail-mail address in the issues that we can use...Future
issues, and ventures into many untouched aspects of POTA will all
depend upon us and our input...If "Revolution" goes well, and that
depends on us, the "sky's the limit" as far as more POTA comics is
concerned -- because it's up to MR Comics if there will be more
issues, not Fox...
> I'm sure there is a lot that I'm missing but I was busy fielding
emails and IMs from those who couldn't get in to the chatroom. Those
that got in please feel free to add anything that I missed.
I can't thank you enough, James, for arranging this...These two busy
Comic-creators took their valuable time out to talk with us, and give
us tid-bits to wet our appetites more (if that were possible!)...

This is so exciting, we may have some pota comics for a long time. I am looking forward to the next chat. Elaine

The latest issue is now available to download from Hunter's site. This week's installment of the Escape adaptation features Cornelius' recounting of how apes came to rule the world. The bonus feature this week is a Roddy McDowall photo-folio: 4 pages of photos featuring the actor in some of his non-simian roles.

There has been a rumor going around that the first issue of the new
comic 'Revolution' has been delayed several weeks. This rumor is untrue.

We have been in contact with the President of MR Comics, Steve
Ballantyne, and he has assured us that they are still scheduled for a
December 7th release. The comic is set to go to the printer on November
30th. The rest depends on when a distributor (such as Diamond) picks up
their consignment and then ships to the stores.

So if the comic is not in your local store by the 7th it should be
there within a few days. Just check back later in the week.

Feel free to share this post with any other group or message board. We
all wish for the success of the comic and want to quell this rumor as
fast as possible.

If I remember correctly, Ty and Joe also thought that the she-ape in
the insemination scene was Lisa...I believe James brought out that
Natalie Trundy played the she-ape, which is where some confusion
could arise, not to mention her looking like Lisa...

Yeah, except for her hair.
And she sure doesn't act like Lisa.
She was so coy before it's a bit out

Well LTZ, Yeah It Kinda Matters, I mean IF both She-Apes are One In
The Same, then it shows a loyalty on Ceaser's part that is nice to
see.I realize Ceaser (as he said himself) "Is Not Human" but it's
nice to give him Respectable "Human" Qualities such as being
Monogomous (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) but hopefully you

Thank you, LT, for validating my thoughts so precisely. Anyway, it
matters if their offspring from that union ape-ears in a future
storyline. What happened to that child? Who was he/she? And how
does that character fit into the royal line? Was that part of the
story a non-sequitor of no importance? Can't be. Caesar
was "King." It matters.

An interesting point! The Adventure Comics series starred a grandson of
Caesar named Alexander, which always confused fans since Cornelius died as
a child. I've always been of the contention that Caesar and Lisa had
another child, but what if Alexander were the grandson of Caesar and the
she-ape from Conquest? Hmmm...food for thought.

How do you even know if this child would survive?

Maybe the female in question was killed in the revolt... Maybe it was an unsuccessful mating...Maybe it picked up on the "dumb gene" and never learned anything....

If it is Lisa I don't think she was impregnated then.
There's no mention of any previous children.  And
young Cornelius' age doesn't jibe with being
conceived at that time.  It would explain why
she was so over protective of him though,
but it couldn't be considered cannon.

Yeah, but lets face it.  As a male if I'm being thrown into a breeding
annex, I'm just going to enjoy myself.  You don't have to force me.
As far as aphrodisiacs, it would make sense to put the female in
a receptive mood if you're trying to get them to mate.

Upon a successful breeding (and subsequent birth) that is the most likely thing to happen... Just like those baby chimps they show, they are being raised to be slaves, and taken away from their mother(s) for almost immediate conditioning...

How do you even know if this child would survive?

Maybe the female in question was killed in the revolt... Maybe it was an unsuccessful mating...Maybe it picked up on the "dumb gene" and never learned anything....

Possibly as they evolve they may lose the mating cycle but that may take awhile. Elaine

        I was wondering,

The vast majority of the 'MONKEY-MINDS'(As I like to define us POTA
fans) is disappointing by Burton's remake.
Well, according to your insight, it could be possible to 'link' the
movie events to APELINE ONE or APELINE TWO?

I don't see how but... maybe you're smarter than me! :)

        Monkey-Minds,

Another idea popped up in my twisted, space-time continuums filled
mind. What if Caesar's efforts were so effective to drastically
change Taylor's future? Oh ------> yes, we' ve talked about this at
least 4.500 times, but I was thinking... to another perspective now.

It has been estabilished that the time chronometers on ANSA ships
suck very bad and don't properly work if are given the overdue
stress. What if Virdon and Burke (and Jones's corpse for instance)
emerged in 4500 A.C, or even further, along the APELINE TWO where
Caesar somehow prevented the Alpha-Omega bomb by killing Kolp
(forget the BFTPOTA deleted scenes, they are *NOT* canon) but wasn't
able to disrupt the blood heritage of the 'Apes Vs. Humans' issue at
all? (the crying statue was an omen, thus)- So, the continuum RET-
CONNED itself to the point the bomb never blew up the POTA in 3978/9
A.C., and Humans had the chance to evolve themselves to the rural
state we can see and enjoy in the series. The chronometer was just
wrong, it wasn't 3085 A.C. (even Virdon stated it didn't work
properly). Maybe the NEW YORK pic which spawned so much controversy
among us was... FAKE or illusory (a design).

Is there some evidence in the series to support such theories? For a
moment forget the 'Circular Theory' issue, please. For a moment
forget you don't retain that the series fits well with the 5 movies,
please. For a moment, let's pretend everuthing I was saying is 'in
tune' with your believings, and let me know if there's EVIDENCE in
the series to back up my line of thought.

        Many thanks in advance.

I don't think this works though, and here's my
reasoning. Something that I never ever noticed
when reading the series originally, but that
struck me when I was re-reading the series for the
piece I wrote for Scrolls... Alexander, despite
being Caesar's grandson, appears to be an
orangutan! Granted, there is some margin for error
since the comic is in black and white (you could
argue he's just a chimp with bright coloured hair)
except that the covers are in colour. Take a look,
for example, at the cover of the wedding issue
(#12 I think) and it's confirmed. So it looks like
Caesar must've done the nasty with an orang at
        some point!

Well Alan, I'm sure we've all done the nasty with an orang at some
point, unless they're from Falkirk. The big problem with the Adventure
comics was always telling the Apes apart.I was reduced to spotting
clothing markers and glyphs and relying on that.Even sexes could be
difficult to tell apart.Alexander being Caesar's grandson, 100 years
after Battle, is a bit of a stretch for me and yes, he definitely looks
like an orang most of the time---the fact that Coure, his girlfriend,
looks like she's a chimp suggests tat Alex is just a malformed Chimp!
There's on Gorilla in the animated series novels who has a chimp

Of course, deleted scenes are not canon. But Battle had certain scenes restored and released by FOX for both TV distribution and the Lasar disk. Thus, by definition those scenes ARE canon. They can't be discounted because they don't fit in to one's personal theory.

        Subject: Kong is Coming!!!
        .html
        .html.htmlIt's in stores tomorrow!!!

        From www.dvdjournal.com:

        King Kong: Two-Disc Collector's Edition

"King Kong died for our sins." It's a T-shirt seen recently in Seattle, worn by a teenager and illustrated with the original vintage image of the monster ape atop the Empire State Building. An image from 1933, when this iPod-age kid's great-grandparents were ready to replace Herbert Hoover with FDR. Like religious iconography, some elements from movie history — a capricious, unforeseeable few — have achieved a sort of transcendence. Chaplin's Little Tramp. Darth Vader's mask. They're written into the hard drive of our culture, glyphs recognized instantly even if you've had no direct contact with their sources. It's no surprise then to see that on King Kong 's first, and superb, DVD release, two generations of filmmakers are on record praising this pioneering film as influential beyond its action-adventure-monster-thriller aims. In the new commentary track, special-effects master Ray Harryhausen (with colleague Ken Ralston) tells us that as a boy he first viewed Kong at its Grauman's Chinese Theatre premiere, and that it irrevocably altered the course of his life. Without Kong , the movies that showcased Harryhausen's effects work in the 1950s and '60s would have never been made, movies that have themselves inspired later filmmakers such as Landis, Lucas, and Spielberg. Harryhausen's Hollywood star is now across the street from where it all began for him. Elsewhere within this two-disc celebration is a terrific new "making-of" documentary. That's where Peter Jackson — demonstrably the most well-connected Kongophile on the planet — gushes about first experiencing this old black-and-white fantasy at age 12. He credits it with kick-starting his desire to make movies. Without Kong, would we now have Jackson's Lord of the Rings? Would Lucas have made Star Wars?  Would Arthur Jacobs have made Planet of the Apes? And if not, where would we, or Hollywood, be today? Hear that sound? That's dominoes toppling like little 2001 monoliths.

That big ape's fingerprints are everywhere. Jack Kerouac gave King Kong (along with Lamont Cranston, Popeye, and the Marx Brothers) credit for originating the Beat Generation. "Whatever happened to Fay Wray?" asks The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Kong's Lilliputian blond love interest gained a curious immortality: While she did little more than scream and look beautiful, we remember Fay Wray's name, not Ann Darrow, as the girl held in that hairy paw. The actress couldn't have known that hers would be the other household name to emerge from RKO's hush-hush project, which was one of her eleven films released in '33. How many people today remember that Robert Armstrong played the reckless impresario Carl Denham? Denham was, in fact, a thinly fictionalized alter ego for producer Merian C. Cooper, an adventurer whose flamboyant Indiana Jones life deserves its own full-length documentary (which, incidentally, is on Disc Two). Even Bruce Cabot as the two-fisted hero, First Mate Jack Driscoll, is forgotten to all but the aficionados. Granted, his dry, aw-shucks performance makes him the least memorable lead, but something about it adds to Kong 's abundant naive charms. What Wray likely did know was that this was a project rife with firsts. The film practically invented sound design. Max Steiner's symphonic score taught the movies how to use original music. The screenplay, as lean and straight as an arrow, is a model for how to ground the most outrageous fantasy in the mundane, the everyday, so that we buy even a prehistoric jungle filled with otherworldly terrors. Best of all, of course, are Willis O'Brien's groundbreaking stop-motion creature performances, which imbued tabletop models with character and nuance. When the T-Rex scratches its head like a cocker spaniel, and the brontosaur sneers at its upcoming human Slim Jim, suddenly they're living things, not just props. When Kong kills the T-Rex by breaking open its jaw, we wince at the brutal realism of it. Kong's longevity began when O'Brien gave the 18-inch-tall puppet more humanity and personality than we see from the flesh-and-blood actors onscreen. After the climax's Manhattan rampage, when Kong plummets off the Empire State Building, we don't feel triumph for our side. No Death Star explosion hurrahs here. Whether Kong or Denham is the movie's genuine monster remains an open question.

Calling King Kong the Star Wars of its day sounds too pat, though it's accurate enough. A rousing story with huge, never-seen-before visuals. All-day showings for lines of ticket-buyers around the block. Star Wars arrived fortuitously when we needed it most, the malaise of the 1970s. When King Kong debuted during the rock-bottom of the Depression, it gave people what they really wanted to see: a giant ape giving Wall Street a thrashing. Entire books have explored why King Kong's potency endures long after so much of it has become dated by evolving styles, techniques, and expectations. (It's not perfect, it's just great.) There are exegeses about metaphors for the immigrant experience in America, the symbolism of Nature vs. Civilization, and Freudian or Jungian interpretations (that Empire State Building looks mighty suggestive). There's some truth there, probably. Somehow Kong taps our brain's collective dream-level to strike a mythopoetic, universal note. Cooper, though, would snort at such ex post facto blather. He just aimed to make a rip-roaring good picture. Whatever else it is, King Kong is that. The better part of a century later, it's still a hell of a lot of fun. That's all we want and all it needs to be. Pretty cool about that T-shirt, though.

        *          *          *

It took eight years for the Eighth Wonder of the World to hit DVD. Everyone involved wanted to get it right, and there's no question that they succeeded. Warner's King Kong DVD presents a print newly restored from the best available source materials. Sharper, cleaner, and far more vivid than previous home video editions, this restoration really brings out the beautiful composite visuals, which pack the screen with almost three-dimensional dreamscapes. Even if you've seen the film dozens of times, you're bound to notice details you've never seen before. Just as important, it hasn't been over -restored. We still see just enough grain and minor hairline scratches to remind us that the original elements are long gone, though neither do we get a polish so shiny that we're always aware of a digital lacquering. The DD 1.0 audio is likewise clean and robust with just enough enhancement. The extras are a treasure box for hardcore and casual fans alike. The commentary with Ray Harryhausen and Ken Ralston isn't deep (technical info doesn't go beyond Kong 101), but it is an enjoyable sit-down with two knowledgeable enthusiasts sharing their pleasure of the film. (The commentary also includes a few archival inserts from Merian C. Cooper and Fay Wray.) Disc Two's highlights are two excellent documentaries. I'm Kong: The Exploits of Merian C. Cooper (60 min.) is a 2005 production from TCM and Photoplay, co-directed by film historian Kevin Brownlow. Cooper, along with longtime friend and co-producer/adventurer/explorer Ernest B. Schoedsack, is revealed as man movies should be about. Then clocking in at a speedy two and half hours, RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong is a seven-part archeological dig into the film's conception, production, and legacy. Peter Jackson joins historians, film professionals, effects artisans, and other deep-dyed fans in one of the best "making-of" testimonials to be seen anywhere. Its most notable segment details Jackson's painstaking pseudo-recreation of the famous Lost Spider Pit Sequence, by itself worth the sticker-price for devotees. Rounding out the extras are a gallery of eight Merian C. Cooper movie trailers, and test footage (with Harryhausen's commentary) for Willis O'Brien's aborted film Creation , which convinced Cooper of O'Brien's rightness for Kong. The discs' double slimline case comes packed in an embossed tin box. Also inside is a reproduction of the program book from the Grauman's premiere, and a set of postcard-size Kong posters.

I'd have to agree with you there. As I've said before, I see Battle as
a fork in the road. If Apes & Humans can continue to live in peace then

Well, according to your insight, it could be possible to 'link' the
movie events to APELINE ONE or APELINE TWO?

You CANNOT link the real Planet of the Apes to pota2001...

They are not even the same thing, PLANET is the planet Earth in the future, where in that pota2001 thing, it is a totally foreign planet...

Statements like this always feel awkward. Don't get me wrong, Cougar, I know where you're coming from but it does kind of suggest that all the other fantastical elements of APES (and by extension any form of fiction) CAN happen.

The skill behind a good story is in making the impossible acceptable -
at least for the amount of time that you are immersed in it.

Remember the tag-line "You'll beieve a man can fly". Impossible, so it can't work - but we cut the idea some slack because it was so damn good.

I see APES as no different. it's a bloody good story but the bottom line is that it's still fantasy - and, as Pat M Tilton has repeatedly shown, a fantasy that on closer examination has few ties with reality.
