Yeah, they're pretty funny with how they classify bombs these days.

I didn't see much excitement for it, either. "Entertainment Weekly"
printed the results of an online poll a couple of weeks ago that
asked, "Why didn't you go see KING KONG?" 52% of the 13K+ responses
were, "I've seen this movie before. Twice." As I think I said here,
my wife had less than zero interest in it, because she thinks the
story is dumb. (That said, she went to see it anyway and enjoyed it
more than she thought she would. But she still thinks the story
itself is dumb.)

Yes, but Red Dragon is the original name of the novel that Manhunter was
based on.

William Petersen was such a better Will Graham than what's his name
pretty boy was. When Red Dragon was out, most reviews I read pointed out
that Manhunter was a far superior film.

Forget BATTLE.  I continue to be surprised at how popular the TV show is.  That was the huge disappointment in POTAdom -- until the 2001 disaster.

I guess it all has to do with childhood nostalgia.  For me the time of the original is golden, for Joe it's BENEATH, partly because he was only five when PLANET came out.  For others of you here, the TV show was your first exposure to APES, so it rates as something special.

The guy who wrote the "other" POTA book, Eric Greene, he saw BATTLE first, so don't wonder why he sees so much in it.

In many regards PLANET and BENEATH are the only two "true" Planet
of The Apes movies

Yeah, since they are the only ones on "The Planet" so to speak.
And the only ones now in the future.  It's a bit far fetched and
Escape excels it in many respects.  But escape had certain
advantages, being in a modern setting and having only the two
principles and one supporting Ape.  But Beneath did have
an advantage as well, being in the original POTA world.  And
in spite of budget problems, nuclear bombs are always fun.  ; )

Return of the Jedi. (Are we allowed to mention Star Wars in this

True, except that MANHUNTER was not made-for-TV (though it was
directed by Michael Mann, who did "Miami Vice" for TV).

I like the updated version Rory, and I think you should come up with a
back cover (and maybe some inside booklet artwork) with the photos Dan
and Mark suggested.

BTW, just so everyone knows, this isn't an imminent release. It's going
to be a while before all the various elements are assembled and ready to
go. When they are though, everyone will know.

I appreciate the enthusiasm everyone has shown for this project. I'm sure
everyone here would agree that sharing ape rarities from one's own
personal collection- instead of hoarding them all to yourself- is
something to be encouraged among fans.

Quite a bit actually. It kept up a very good pace, and the effects were
very impressive. The one scene at the end (in Boston) where one of the
tripods was leaning into the side of a building was one of the most
realistic EFX shots I've ever seen.

There scenes were too quick. We could have learned more from them about
some experiences and what the Govt told Brent about his rescue mission
and why Taylor and his crew where really in space for.. <<

Part of that no doubt was due to the restrictions placed on the
production. There was at least once scene filmed in the cell that was
definitely cut out. And the rescue mission has always been a bit of a
mystery. I always wondered if Dehn had intended to follow that up at some
point, or if he simply wasn't familiar enough with the first film to know
that Taylor wasn't supposed to be coming back. Remember that you couldn't
just go out and rent a video back then. It would have been easy enough to
say that Brent and Taylor's ship were part of the same mission, so Dehn
most likely just wasn't aware.

was aired here on the East Coast.

Was there a movie before the June 17th 1976 airing of BATTLE?

I'm pretty sure they were licensed elsewhere and that's why they couldn't
be included. One of the old Marvel animated series from 1966/67 was
partially reworked. Either the Fantastic Four were taken out of a Sub
Mariner cartoon or vice versa because Grantray Lawrence had licensed Sub
Mariner and Hanna Barbera had the FF.

>>Marvel was talking about a feature SS film back in 1996 (around the
same time a Captain America cartoon series was proposed) but it
eventually became an animated series instead (and the Captain America
cartoon was scrapped in favour of a b-roster Avengers cartoon.)

If done properly, Captain America could be a great movie series. But
in the meantime, there's a straight-to-video animated Ultimate
Avengers feature-length cartoon coming out on DVD on February 21. <<

I gave up on the Fox Avengers series after a few episodes because it
wasn't very well done. Ditto for that animated Spiderman series they did
with Peter Parker going to an alternate Earth. I'm curious as to how the
new Avengers DVD will be. In fact, I remember reading an article saying
that Marvel has a whole series of straight to DVD releases of this
nature.

Silver Surfer has been discussed for a long, long time now. At least
there's the technology now to make it look descent. The Captain America
movie from 1990 had a good costume, but that's about it. Believe it or
not, I actually enjoyed the two TV Movies from 1979. Ditto for Dr.
Strange, Spiderman (with Nicholas Hammond), and The Hulk.

I've definitely looked through those before. The interesting thing about
those 4:30 Movie ads is that they ran a different text theme with them
each year. The ones on the page here took the humorous approach
("...monkey business is taken seriously", "...thousands of simians start

Speaking of which:

I actually remember seeing that 'Close-Up' ad from September 14th, 1973
when it originally ran. For those of you who have TV Guides from back
then, were there any pictures ads for BENEATH or BATTLE like there are
for the other three?

Labor Day weekend 1998, my TV was tuned to AMC for most of the weekend.
Plus they ran the films all month long at different times. One week it
was the widescreen versions at 8 PM and midnight, and the Tuesday night
airing of BENEATH was during their "Reel Cinema" segment, so the film got
a special introduction by the guy who used to be their host (can't think
of his name right now). I do remember him standing in the upstairs lobby
of a large, upscale theatre though. I have that on tape here somewhere in
my collection.

    >>But this is cheap and lazy, like the static shots in anime.<<

Well it doesn't suck, but it's definitely not for everyone. It's just one
of those things you either love or hate, you get or you don't. There's
really no one saying "Well, it's OK". I think if more AS viewers would
look past the obvious (and intentional) limited animation, they'd really
see what was going on. There is a lot of animation geeks out there though
that demand- I think- far too much perfection. They see something
exceptionally brilliant and well done, and then every single thing
afterwards pales in comparison. And that's where the problems start- "in
comparison". You should always judge something on it's own merits first,
then make a comparison if it's relevant. Not just for the sake of
    comparing.

I don't think, though, that a drunk person could come up with a story
that detailed. Stoned, possibly. And although it's inexpensive, the sheer
amount of attention to detail in the story shows that it's not lazy.
    Just...different.

When I said "hip", I was talking more about the viewers than the program
    itself.

I have a fine little (15") Statue of Liberty from when they did the restoration in the eighties.

For myself, I have a small metal trash can with an embossed Statue of

Film scores! Are we the most spoiled fans in the world when it comes to
    music! My choice is:
    1.TV Series
    2.Escape
    3.Planet
    4.Conquest
    5.Beneath
    6.Planet 2001
    7.Return
    8.Battle.
I've surprised myself with that running order, but, to me, it feels
right.Probably reverse it asll tomorrow, however! John, Scrolls.

************whoever wrote the above: thank you. it is interesting to learn first hand what it was like to be a part of the original "apes phenomenon."

Forget BATTLE.  I continue to be surprised at how popular the TV show is.  That was the huge disappointment in POTAdom -- until the 2001 disaster.

***********i agree rory (somewhat). i was thrilled for chance to finally be able to see the show when it had its premeire on the american sci-fi channel, but overall i thought it was kind of weak.
likewise, i had purchased the novels and read them (in the mid to late 80s) and also thought the stories were somewhat bland.

I guess it all has to do with childhood nostalgia.  For me the time of the original is golden, for Joe it's BENEATH, partly because he was only five when PLANET came out.  For others of you here, the TV show was your first exposure to APES, so it rates as something special.

***************again, you may be right, since the curtis/marvel magazines were my first main exposure to pota, and i seem to be more tolerant of their content than others are.

The guy who wrote the "other" POTA book, Eric Greene, he saw BATTLE first, so don't wonder why he sees so much in it.

I used to have a couple of small metal souvenier (spelling?) statues I had gotten from my visits to the statue when I was a kid.  BTW I think it sucks that due to national security visitors can't get to the top of the statue anymore (I used to complain because they wouldn't let me in the torch!) And this was the days before the elevator was added so that was some walk.

My local editions of TVGuide had no ads for
it.....just a brief mention in the fall preview....

"Return to the Planet of the Apes finds NBC undaunted
by the failure of last season's CBS Planet of the Apes
series. This cartoon version is set about 1000 years
later, in the year 3810. The time device adds machines
and vehicles to the plot. Next thing you know, the
    apes will be watching television."

and then just the title in the listings on saturday
morning....but the TVG's were different in other
states...so maybe somewhere out there, there was an ad
    for Return...?

have been awesome if done in the same scale as the Lawgiver. <<

That's very cool Dave!! Did you create the surrounding landscape as well?
I'm presuming that's supposed to be Taylor and Nova towards the right
hand side, but what's that thing off to the left? Looks like a boulder
    with tied around it.

    BENEATH -- Leonard Rosenman
    PLANET -- Jerry Goldsmith
    BATTLE -- Leonard Rosenman
TV SERIES -- Lalo Schifrin and others
    CONQUEST -- Tom Scott
    CARTOON SERIES -- Dean Elliott
    ESCAPE -- Jerry Goldsmith

Admittedly though, BENEATH is the only one I listen to on a regular

Out of curiosity, does everyone here have all the soundtrack CDs (the

I think the combination of the score and the way it was shot, made
Escape look and feel like a made for television movie (even though the
story was probably the strongest). As much as I hate to say the
word...the guitar & bass "dates" the picture unlike the others.

If we ever meet up somewhere, I will. If I start to try and write the
whole thing out it'd take a good half hour. Plus only a fraction of the
entire story has been revealed. Basically though, Fitz has a whole other
life that's been basically taken away from him. He's been brainwashed,
but you aren't 100% sure that any of the other characters are even aware
of that. Shark thinks that Fitz is hiding the truth, but in fact Fitz
doesn't remember it. And then there's Skillet...

The humor simply comes from the bizarre situations, much like ATHF,
Squidbillies, etc. But I don't necessarily think this is supposed to be
just a comedy show. More like a show with humorous elements in it as well
as everything else that's going on.

    >>Oh yeah, really detailed. Pardon my incredulity,

from a shark and pick a guy up at the airport and
make a porno with him, then kill him, then stop at
a bar and get drunk and talk smack, and get in a
jet and fly around. It's Sooooo detailed. Except
it's like that every show. At least the ones I've
seen. Or should I say the one I've seen since
it's the only one they show, over and over, <<

I believe there's only six or seven episodes done right now, so it sounds
like you just keep seeing the first ep. My comments about the detailed
story come from watching all the eps through a few times. It's a very
slow burn, and we've only really seen the tip of the iceberg.

I have the same thing, although I discarded the base and accessories from the set, just keeping the Statue part. It's part of my figure display. I've uploaded a photo in the Misc. folder in the Photos section.

It would have been very cool if Sideshow had done a polystone sculture of the Statue to go along with the Lawgiver.

He was doing a sketch about wacky cable channels and the last one was "Petty Arguments on the Planet of the Apes."  He then showed a clip from PLANET (the scene in Cornelius' Office) and had everyone dubbed.  I can't remember what the petty argument was. but it was mildly amusing, and also the dubbing was perfect.  When Dr. Zaius came in and looked at Taylor he says to him, "Don't look at me."

Well, I think part of it is that in those days you had "The Partridge
Family" and "The Brady Bunch", as well as others, all singing and
dancing to the pop/rock beat -- and then having the serious tone of
POTA and BTPOTA reduced to the pop/rock craze of the time in EFTPOTA -
    - well, it cheapens the serious flavor...IMHO...=)

I'm guessing TOYFARE are referring to the two 12-14 inch high statues

your feelings about the movie these are stunning sculptures and well
    worth $50
