It's weird. The choir hymns aren't in a minor key
and the speech  isn't dubbed and there are extra lines
in it and in the steam room scene.  I wish they'd do more.

I recommend everyone try reading the original novel.  You can imagine your own illustrations.

What does it mean by NATO anyway?
Was this the trailer for Army Bases in

I saw the humans riding horses again.
One even jumped his horse.  I don't think
my idea for Young Dr. Zira getting into
animal psychology and veterinary medicine
because a human stole her horse to escape
and had to be put down because of a broken
leg is too far fetched.  It's the most likely reason.

Well, POTA's characters were all from the novel, with very few,
slight variations...The storyline was roughly the same...In BTPOTA
there are new characters and a new story -- an original idea...The
mutants were a stroke of literary genius -- especially their WORSHIP
of the bomb!...Ursus was a completely new character, and a driving
force in the story; and a good "straight-man" for the weaker Dr.
Zaius character...IMHO...=)

I hate the mutants.

Ursus was actually an invention of Boulle in his "Planet of Men" sequel script.

I guess it's true. People really do like "Beneath". Maybe the next "Apes"
film should be a remake of that. - - - Jeff

Planet
Conquest
Escape
Beneath
and barely below it...Battle

No, it was for the National Association of Theatre Owners, an organization that's still around and currently very angry with the idea of movies coming out on DVD being on the same day as they open in theatres.

As a kid I was so upset they cancelled the TV show that I washed my hands
of the cartoon. I didn't see any point in doing it as a cartoon without the
makeups. I enjoy it more now because I understand the restrictions of TV
animation back then (and the over the top voices are hilarious). - - - Jeff

I think the POTA movie was pretty much an original, too. It differs very
much from the book. "Beneath" is a rehash of the first movie until the
end. - - - Jeff

I recommend it too (it's my favourite book of all
time) but I do also second Rob's recommendation of
the comic adaptation, which is now easily
obtainable as IDW Publishing recently issued a
collected edition.

I also really like both versions that have been
filmed (THE LAST MAN ON EARTH and THE OMEGA MAN)
but I would still like to see someone try a more
faithful adaptation of it. Unfortunately I have an
awful feeling that Hollywood will totally ruin it.

++Well I was contemplating putting them on the same level, but I have
this childhood memory of those red gorilla uniforms and flames and

www.tvshowsondvd.com has more from Fox. Ape-parently the "Return to the POTA" cartoon show won't be available separate from the "Ultimate Collection" on March 28th. What I understand is they are redoing it so it can be released separately as a single disc (in the collection it's 2 discs). So I GUESS they are going to cram them all onto one disc, which sucks. I've tried downloading them from the Yahoo group home site, but it's never worked.

The radio spots type on the cover were taken from a scan of the "header" in the PLANET 1-sheet style ad in the original pressbook, so it is actual POTA type.

If these scenes were meant to be in BATTLE, they would have brought the

The fact that they were scored might mean that the scenes were initially
included, cut for the theatrical release, but then someone decided to
include the extra scenes in order to make it more appealing for the TV

looping probably wouldn't have been considered at that point. I also
doubt anyone would have added a music soundtrack to those scenes when the

Cool. Where did you find these Rory?

I remember my parents watching PLANET and BENEATH on a Friday night, but
I was coming in and out of the living room and only caught parts of both
films. The mutants taking their masks off kind of hooked me, so I made a
point of catching any of the movies whenever they were shown on TV. I
remember when BENEATH was rebroadcast (also on a Friday night), we had a
lot of family members over for some event and I was telling everyone that
they had to be quiet so I could watch my movie in the living room.
Surprisingly, they all left me alone.

BATTLE I also saw on CBS, though I'm not sure which broadcast it was (it
was part of a double feature- The Prince of Central Park was the other).
According to the entry at IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076566/),
the film premiered on June 17th 1977, so I guess I answered my own
    question.

Don't recall the first time I saw ESCAPE or CONQUEST on TV, but I did see
the first few minutes of ESCAPE at a drive in. I was four at the time,
and fell asleep in the back of my parents station wagon shortly after the
opening credits when the apes removed their helmets (I stayed awake for
the Pink Panther cartoon though). Didn't have quite the late night
    stamina I do now.

The animated Silver Surfer series that Fox ran a few years back was
exceptionally well written, and similar to RETURN in the fact that it had
an ongoing backstory. Part of the problem with that show was that they
kept bouncing it around the schedule and that adversely affected the
ratings. Of course, they did that with Family Guy and Futurama too. FG is
back, and there's talk of Futurama returning as well. I doubt this would
happen with SS though. I had found a website about the show years ago,
and one of the show creators actually posted the script for the first
episode of the planned second season (which resolved the first season
    cliffhanger).

John, I thought the SS comic series that was launched in 1987/88 ran for
several years. Any comic book people here who can clarify?

As far as podcasting goes, I can produce the whole thing. A great idea is to interview some
of the members who have created artwork and show the artwork as they are interviewed.
Even interview collectors and show their collection. Maybe some original stories could be
read in a weekly series. It would be a blast.

Well im my opinion he (James Francisus) was a better choice for the role than Burt Reynolds. I could not see him(reynolds) playing that part.  I thought JF did  a good job.
I would have liked to seen more scenes  with Taylor and Brent though. There scenes were too quick.  We could have learned more from them about some experiences  and what the Govt told Brent about his rescue mission and why Taylor and his crew where really in space for..

Yes, I know some of you think he's the best, but he just never was able
to carry the film, IMO. It took Roddy and Kim and Chuck, actors with
that power and sheer charisma and presence.

The animated Silver Surfer series was great, the art was Kirby-
inspired. My only gripe with it was they took the Fanastic Four out
of his 1st appearance on Earth.

The 80's SS comics ran at least 150 issues or so. The early issues
were the best. There was a SS one-short in 1983 or 1984 that was
really good, too, by John Byrne.

Marvel was talking about a feature SS film back in 1996 (around the
same time a Captain America cartoon series was proposed) but it
eventually became an animated series instead (and the Captain America
cartoon was scrapped in favour of a b-roster Avengers cartoon.)

If done properly, Captain America could be a great movie series. But
in the meantime, there's a straight-to-video animated Ultimate
Avengers feature-length cartoon coming out on DVD on February 21.

Hopefully one day we'll see a classy POTA animated cartoon again,
too. TV or direct to video, I'm sure FOX stands to make money there
    somehow.

    that :
    Planet re-aired on August 27, 1976
Beneath was shown again on March 16, 1976
    Conquest on September 9, 1976
and Battle on June 17, 1976
Hadn't found a second showing of Escape...
These were all on network TV (I believe on CBS)
after that I have found all the films on various dates
but as syndicated to local stations.

funny, but it is.  Perfect Hair Forever is
only funny because it spoofs most of
the anime genre conventions, like a
    quest, a letcherous master, defeats
in battle that are only temporary, etc . . .
I can only tolerated To Goes To The Mayor
occasionally.  It's no ATHF or Sealab,
and even Sealab went down hill after the death
of voice actor Harry Goz.  The only really good
new CN-AS show has been The Venture Brothers.
And that takes forever to produce.  You could lose
all your perfect hair forever waiting on a second season.

Wahlberg has predictably continued to be the big movie star but Giamatti has become an unlikely movie star in his own right. To quote Peter Ustinov from Logan's Run: "Oh, HARDLY!!". The Ape Society
in BENEATH is controlled by a different ruling class, threatened with an
oncoming famine, and are setting out on a genocidal war which they
somehow feel that God has sanctioned. The entire Ape society isn't doing
well at all in BENEATH- very different from what we saw in PLANET. Brent
is also an entirely different character, so he reacts to the truth in a
very different way. Also in BENEATH, both societies (Ape and Mutant) are
essentially corrupt with power and hypocritical, whereas in PLANET (with
the orangutans in power) it was more of a status quo. Granted that the
orangutans were far from perfect, but they weren't looking for a
    justification to start a war.

    It's a sequel in the same way that 2061 was a sequel to 2001 & 2010, or
Silence of the Lambs was a sequel to Red Dragon. Some of the same
characters, but minor characters from one are more prominent in the other
and vice versa, plus there's an entirely different story going on.

I always figured there was a post-production recording of the mutant
congregation. Probably the organ music as well now that I think about it.

In addition to the extra lines in Ursus' speech and the steam room scene,
there's the shot (looking straight down) of the bomb rising out of the
ground, the gorilla solider firing his machine gun into the cell where
Brent, Taylor, and Nova are, and a quick shot of the entire congregation
removing their masks which (I believe) isn't in the final cut. A bit more
    singing as well.

You can also tell they beefed up the sound effect of the metal girders
banging into the doors of the Cathedral.

I always thought it was interesting they made it appear the mass was
happening just as the army was invading. And that "Their faces!!" line
was always a bit of a puzzler. Anyone have any idea if that was filmed
specifically for the NATO presentation, or just a bit of studio magic
    when it was being assembled.

I also think they did a pretty good job of using the right score segments
from the first film to highlight some of what was being shown. I'd really
love to know if there's anyone left alive who helped put this thing
together. It'd be interesting to hear some of the ideas behind how they
came up with the final product.

It's really an experiment in juxtaposition. Partially- I suspect- to see
if the viewers are as open minded and hip to new things as they claim to
be. The animation is deliberately simplistic, but the story is one of the
most "deliberate" things I've ever come across. There's a very
convoluted, twisted, folding back and forth upon itself, David
Mamet/David Milch type of approach. Every single thing- even what appears
to be a throwaway line of visual gimmick- ties in. It's a slowly evolving
thing, and another 20 episodes have been greenlit. I was back and forth
on it for a while, but after recording the marathon and viewing it later,
I'm really hooked. One of my favorite AS shows right now.

    >>Squidbillies shouldn't be funny, but it is. <<

Done by the ATHF guys, so it has promise. Same idea at ATHF though- come

    >>Perfect Hair Forever is only funny because it spoofs most of
the anime genre conventions, like a quest, a letcherous master, defeats
in battle that are only temporary, etc . . . <<

Exactly what it set out to do, but again having Dave Willis (of ATHF)
involved. He's actually brilliant with some of the voice over work he
does- largely improvisational in this case.

    >>I can only tolerated To Goes To The Mayor occasionally. <<

This is one of the most dreadful things I've ever seen. The gimmick get's
tired very quickly, and unfortunately anymore anything with Bob Odenkirk
tends to just not be funny.

    >>It's no ATHF or Sealab, and even Sealab went down hill after the death
of voice actor Harry Goz. <<

Another brilliant improvisation actor. Although I don't think Sealab was
started with that in mind, his approach to Capt. Murphy is ultimatly what
ended up making that show as funny as it was. Had Harry Goz not been
involved in the first place, I doubt it would've lasted as long as it
did. They did a valiant effort in trying to carry on (even getting
Harry's son Michael to voice a new character), but it just didn't work.

    >>The only really good new CN-AS show has been The Venture Brothers.
And that takes forever to produce. You could lose
all your perfect hair forever waiting on a second season. <<

Well, it also took them FOREVER to greenlight Season 2. Looking back, it
was really a stupid idea to try and launch that show on Saturday night.
That's really more of an anime crowd. I'm sure when the Second season
begins, it'll be on Sunday evenings.

Stroker & Hoop and Moral Orel are a lot of fun too. Stroker is probably
the closest anyone has come to doing a series about likeable degenerate
since Duckman. And Moral Orel is a pure iconoclastic approach to
storytelling. Giving tribute to- and spoofing at the same time- a show
like Davey & Goliath- is no small feat. So far, so good though.

Actually, the original novel is entitled Red Dragon.  Manhunter was a made for TV movie adaptation of the novel Red Dragon.

Actually Silence Of The Lambs is a sequel to Manhunter.
    Red Dragon is a remake.

True, except that MANHUNTER was not made-for-TV (though it was
directed by Michael Mann, who did "Miami Vice" for TV).

    Hello Joe
Any idea if you will be doing an update on your book since there
have been more collectables released such as the Sideshow and
    Medicom line?

Don't you think BFTPOTA would have come up a few notches if it had been
Dehn's edgier script, with the bomb sequences left intact?...

I agree...As I said before, I like the storyline, and the mutants --
especially of their worshipping the bomb...

In many regards PLANET and BENEATH are the only two "true" Planet

I see what you're saying here, and I agree with your sentiments...

Some were hoping "King Kong" would get a major nomination but it only got some technical noms. Guess it didn't rock the world.

One critic was on TV this morning and said that the industry actually considers KK a bomb.  It's made hundreds of millions, but it was expected to do LOTR kind of business.  (I don't know where anyone got that idea!  I had a feeling there wasn't much excitment about KK before it was released, except from the geeks.)
