didn't want the extended cut.

No.

OK, I'll tell everybody here why I didn't sign the petition -- and I know this will come as a big shock to many of you...

It was because, frankly my dears, I couldn't have cared less.  (Am I using the right expression there, T?)  I also thought the petition was coming a little too late to do any good.  I still believe that's true and that the extended cut is what Fox had been planning on releasing for some time.  I've already emailed Steve Feldstein to try and find out, but who knows if he'll answer me?

I really, truly don't like BATTLE, and if Fox didn't put the extended version out this time -- again -- it simply wouldn't have bothered me very much.  I don't enjoy watching the movie, it's actually painful for me.  It's such a comedown from the original movie that it physically hurts for me to look at.  In order to watch it I very much have to pretend my good buddy Dr. Z cut out my frontal lobes.  However, I do prefer that the extended cut is released.  It's out there, so why not let everyone enjoy it in anamorphic widescreen.  I don't dislike the film so much I wish to deny anything to those that do.

What I did say was that I thought the theatrical version was the "official" version.  It was the only version in the original release and in the GO APE reissues, so that was my feeling.  However, now that Fox is presenting the extended cut as BATTLE, well I guess that's now the "official" version.  Whatever.

I guess that would depend on the genetics...Would the "transparent"
mutant skin be dominant, or the ape "non-transparent"...
This could become a whole running topic itself...=)

Hi all,

Just a brief message for those of you who are also members of the DG. You may have noticed a rather negatively worded post (credited to me) that showed up in the DG, but in fact what I had written was RE-written by Michael Whitty and then submitted. Apparently, a Yahoo group moderator can do that- which I wasn't aware of otherwise I wouldn't have sent in any message at all.

My reason for writing was basically a reaction to all the negative things he had been saying in the DG about all the fan related projects/efforts, including the BATTLE petition, Simian Scrolls, and even the restoration team for the Spanish POTA comic series. I made a reference to something he did (something he definitely doesn't want the public at large to be aware of), and he changed that into me admitting a conspiracy that the entire restoration team had plotted against him from the very beginning. Past being a violation of Yahoo's user policies, it's certainly not a very respectable or honorable thing to do.

So that's really the sum and substance of it. Should anyone require additional information you can contact me directly, but out of respect for the positive way this group is run I'm not going to continually comment on the situation in public, because that'd be tantamount to all the negativity that happens elsewhere. It's not something I'm going to perpetuate here, but I did feel it was appropriate to clarify what had actually happened.

We now return you to the theatrical/extended version of BATTLE debate, already in progress.   :-)

A very short issue this week. No letter column, just 11 more pages of the Conquest adaptation and the cover. So you all have extra time this week to get to your local comic shop and pick up issue 2 of Revolution on the Planet of the Apes, the new Apes comic from Mr. Comics.

This has always been my favourite cover image. Does anyone know what

Would they have been returned to the artists or would they have

Charlton Heston looked much younger than 43 when POTA was filmed
(1967)? There's some movie backstage pic (as the one James put in the
photos, close shot of Taylor in his full Ansa suit) where he somehow
shows his age, but in the movie he gave a much younger
man 'impression'.
One could assume that Taylor is 36.

Agree?

Yes, I'd say that Taylor is younger then what Charlton Heston was in
real life. I'd say he was 36 to 38. I can't tell off the top of my
head cause I've always though he seemed to ages in this film. I
always thought he looked younger with a beard!

I don't know what was my favorite cover, but my favorite issue was the second one, I think because the cover was mostly orange, and orange was just the "color of POTA" for me.  That issue also had an interview with Michael Wilson, which was a rare thing.  No issue after that was ever as good.

NO!  Heston was 44 (just like the number of Topps POTA cards) and so was Taylor!  Otherwise, his comments to Landon don't make much sense.

I didn't make it downtown tonight to pick up Revolution #2 but will

And on the topic of comics (no, the following won't be about Captain

two weeks earlier than surrounding areas, at least here in Ontario.

Is that still the case? Do NY and LA shops get their books sooner?

Group: pota Message: 35894 From: FK Date: 2/15/2006
Subject: Apes DVD Box Sets and Eric Greene's 'commentary'
.html
I've been an Apes fan since my uncle first took me and my
brother to see 'Beneath' in the theaters in the early 70's.
Since, that time, I collected, lost, found on e-bay again, toys,
books, comics, videos and odd's and ends related to the 5 Apes
Movies, Cartoon and beyond. I always found the Apes saga to
have so many things to say, across a broad spectrum, and to be top-
notch action enterntainment as well. Having said all that, I
find it somewhat distressing/disappointing that Eric Greene, who
wrote the book on Planet of The Apes 'American Myth', as related
solely to the downs of American society. Granted the statue of
liberty at the end of POTA, brings the story firmly to the
shores of the USA, but, to say the excess's shown of Ape
society is the same as American society is a bit of stretch.
Case in point, using the hearing of Cornelius and Zira as
related to going against the law, sacrilidge or heresy, he says
was related to HUAC in the 50's? As far as I know, HUAC didn't
lobotomize anyone and certainly wasn't concerned with religion,
but, a political movement threatening the Republic in a Major
Way through force and war. Second, he says the Apes were an
allegory, for 'Black' Civil Rights, and this may be hinted at in
Conquest. Putting aside the 'racist' aspect of comparing 'black'
people to Apes, I think it's more relevant as a 'class struggle'
allegory and totalitarian state. See, to me and my brother, we had
come from a former Communist nation, we viewed the
Apes 'heriarchy' akin to what Communists had done, from Lobotmise
for political dissent, to slave state Gulag system of slaves.
My point is the narrow, political/social view provided by
repeatedly including Greene's analysis as a sole view, really
narrows the scope on the worldwide 'Apes' phenomona. Growing up,
Taylor, represented the American Astronaut who came back and
found his world and nation destroyed, not solely by it's actions,
but, cause of a worldwide conflict.

Which brings me to the NEW Box set, having purchased the other
BOX set, I see this as a 'dirty trick', there is nothing NEW
here, same old extras..etc..only the cartoon and the uncut 'Battle'
make it worthwhile, and maybe the CEASAR 'head' case. I still may
buy it for the anamorphic versions. Recently, I tracked some
old Mego Apes Figures and Mint Treehouse..still have some old
one's from when I was a kid. The new sideshow figures would
have been a dream then. As for the 2001 Apes movie, it's best
forgotten, the original Apes, like 2001:A Space Odyssey and
other classics can never be duplicated, even the
current 'Revolution/Apes' comic doesn't hold a candle to
the 'Curtis/Marvel' Comic Magazines. It's nice to see 'new' apes
material, based on the old look, but, like us, getting older, it
won't be the same.

I'm still an Apes fan, as joining this club should attest, and
can't help but remember fondly that day in the early 70's, when
one movie on a large New York screen, on a rainy saturday all
those years ago. Seeing, Beneath and the end of the world , at
such a young age made me think of time and space, and gave me a
life-long ambition in science. All in what was just a popcorn
movie that I saw for .75 cents.

Well, "Revolution on the Planet of the Apes" issue #2 came today, here
in Southern California...I sat down and read it immediately...

If you can believe it's possible, issue #2 is even better than issue
#1!...This is a great story, being told in an excellent tale-telling
fashion...

There are nice little glimpses into facets of characters/situations
developing that only serve to tease the reader to go on to the next
page -- until there are no more pages!...Now, I have to wait for issue
#3 for the next page!...

There are wonderfully presented peeks at the five classic movies,
either in picture or word, that only serve to bring up feelings of
wonderfully nostalgic memories...

Great job Salgood, Joe, Ty, Gabriel and Bernie...Keep it
coming!...Thank you so much!...

The gorillas didn't carry M-16s in the original movie.

HEY!  That leads me to a question for everyone....

Can anyone imagine, or would anyone desire, and be disappointed with, a story -- whether a movie, TV show, comic, or whatever -- that was PLANET OF THE APES but......

DIDN'T INVOLVE ANYONE HAVING, FIRING, OR EVEN SHOWING OR MENTIONING GUNS?

It's just been getting to me lately with all the talk about comics, mostly on the DG group, but so much of POTA seems to be obsessed with firing lead!

Everyone's "situation" (for lack of a better homogonous word) happens

yes, I can imagine and I wouldn't be disapointed, provided it was well
told. Is it just firearms or could the arguement be extended to
include weapons of any kind? (knives, bows, clubs, whatever)

No guns were significantly featured in the middle section of the
original movie (from where Taylor is captured up to where he escapes
into the Forbidden Zone) and it still managed to enthral.

Guns are used as a symbol of power. I think their use was perhaps the
ultimate way for Boulle (and all that followed) to express and drive
home that the apes are now in charge. (wasn't there something in the
original trailer? 'They control the guns'). When Taylor liberates the
rifle from Cornelius's supplies it goes a long way to putting him back
on equal footing.

Jeez, I sound like Eric Greene! Let's do something about that real
quick... Arguement 2: Apes flinging poop doesn't quite have the same
effect!

Might as well be cowboys and Indians!

-- Rory
That is an interesting point. In the novel, are there any guns? I can't remember. It seems like Hollywood prefers action in movies, so guns are needed. There are plenty of stories that could be told that do not include guns. Elaine

in Southern California...I sat down and read it immediately...

If you can believe it's possible, issue #2 is even better than issue
#1!...This is a great story, being told in an excellent tale-telling
fashion...

There are nice little glimpses into facets of characters/situations
developing that only serve to tease the reader to go on to the next

#3 for the next page!...

There are wonderfully presented peeks at the five classic movies,
either in picture or word, that only serve to bring up feelings of
wonderfully nostalgic memories...

Great job Salgood, Joe, Ty, Gabriel and Bernie...Keep it

Armando says in conquest that the birth was "documented" and it was
an unusual event because it was the first chimp born in a circus. I
don't think these points are flaws, just something to ponder. It
never dawned on me until just now that the connection made by the
name Milo would be Dr. Milo and not the child of Zira. Also one other
question regarding Dr. Milo-

In the opening of ESCAPE Dr. Milo is the one helping Zira put on her
clothes, and not Cornelius....Hmmm.... Was the marriage just
a "front" for Cornelius? I think Zira liked Dr. Milo a little too
much if you know what I mean.....

Well it's highly probable that Armando 'documented' it
approximatively. Keep in your mind that it was 1973, Hasslein wasn't
still dead, and the totalitarist government of the '80ies/90ies
haven't yet raised to the power (thanks to the death of Hasslein and
the subsequent fall of the '1973' president). That's maybe the major
change that Cornelius and Zira provoked... apart the Plague-Strain
II that they and the Icarus had the chance to introduce.
As far as concerned 'documentation', America was still free in 1973
('til the coming of C and Z, if you know what I mean).

What bothers me is: SALOME' was an 'ordinary' chimp, not an Humanoid
one. CAESAR - being an HUMANOID chimp - grew up as such: larger,
bigger, taller, erect, humanoid-shaped and all that stuff. Maybe
Armando goofed the documentation again.

Well, my friend... Humans, Humanoid Apes... there's no difference!
Cornelius and Zira are much different each other if you ask me...
Cornelius is impulsive, emotional, out of control. I think to Caesar
as the MALE version of Zira. They are also similar... those make-up
wizards shaped Caesar's face on Zira's one. NICE!

I suppose Zaius might view Cornelius in that way but the only time I
recall seeing Cornelius 'out of control' is in Escape when the orderly
refers to his unborn child as a monkey. Impulsive and emotional are
traits I would certainly more associate with Zira - and a good thing
too... for Taylor.

All East Coast American fans should know the importance of April 3, 1968!

(((Well, my friend... Humans, Humanoid Apes... there's no
difference! Cornelius and Zira are much different each other if you
ask me... Cornelius is impulsive, emotional, out of control. I think
to Caesar as the MALE version of Zira. They are also similar...
those make-up wizards shaped Caesar's face on Zira's one. NICE!)))

    I agree completely,

Personally, I always thought Cornelius was the intelligent, geek and
push over one of the gang. Not to everyone, but her certainly lets
Zira push him around, I think it's frustrates her sometimes. He
hardly ever looses his temper when he should, and only ever looses
once where we can see. I've always thought so, because let's face
it... If Caesar were like Cornelius he'd probably not have been the
great ape leader he was. It takes a Zira like character to do it.
You seriously can believe that Caesar is Zira and Cornelius' child
cause he does seem to resemble Zira in face and in character, but
he's played by Roddy McDowell, who was Cornelius… It was very clever!

(((That's maybe the major change that Cornelius and Zira provoked...
apart the Plague-Strain II that they and the Icarus had the chance
to introduce. As far as concerned 'documentation', America was still
free in 1973 ('til the coming of C and Z, if you know what I
    mean). )))

I think it's ironic that if they had just got rid of the slave part
of the story rather then the innocent lives of Zira and Cornelius.
Then there wouldn't have been all of the rubbish that ended up
happening... Then again, we'd be lonely without Caesar.

(((What bothers me is: SALOME' was an 'ordinary' chimp, not an
Humanoid one. CAESAR - being a HUMANOID chimp - grew up as such:
larger, bigger, taller, erect, humanoid-shaped and all that stuff.
Maybe Armando goofed the documentation again.)))

Either that, or Caesar pretended to be a girl through most of his
childhood! Thing is, we can't be sure on what is what... I doubt it
was mentioned whether the ape was humanoid or ordinary chimp, people
just accepted what Caesar grew into. Armando must have pulled a few
strings with the documentation. Maybe Caesar never was properly
registered as a birth in the circus. It would be risky. We have to
    remember that Hasslein wasn't the only one looking for the "Milo";
he was just the one who pulled the trigger that killed Zira and
    Salome.

(((In the opening of ESCAPE Dr. Milo is the one helping Zira put on
her clothes, and not Cornelius.... Hmmm.... Was the marriage just
a "front" for Cornelius? I think Zira liked Dr. Milo a little too
much if you know what I mean...)))

No, I don't know what you mean. I used to always think it was
Cornelius helping Zira put her clothes on, but of course it isn't
cause he's the one who takes he oranges and who is on the other side
of cage. It was Milo helping Zira put her clothes on. It's a little
weird cause my best friend is a guy but I'd make him turn the other
way if I was getting dressed. I guess she just has a lot of trust in
him. She was obviously close friends with him cause she was
devastated by his death, whereas Cornelius didn't seem nearly as
    vexed.

A doctor of what, I wonder?

Zira, she was a doctor and a proper doctor among many other things,
I wonder how many years she went through med school to master in
nearly every area of medicine. And Cornelius was a doctor, although
if someone had a heart attack in a cafe or something, he'd probably
only have his fossil brush to help him. Pretty much every single
none gorilla ape you met in the first two films were doctors. I've
never believed that whole "Trust me I'm a doctor" thing, probably
because my doctor isn't very good.
