Gee, I agree with Rory about the theatrical version being the
official version. I just thought I'd sign to help you all out. I'm
really glad that they are doing it, though. I think it speaks
volumes about the voice that the fans may have.

I could be wrong.

When did the petition start?  I think these on-line petitions are a good thing -- if the studios and Home Video divisions are paying attention to them.

But, I don't think that Fox or any other company has anamorphic transfers with remixed 5.1 digital soundtracks just sitting in a drawer waiting for a demand from fans to get them out.  These things take time to prepare.

I've very cynical when it comes to Fox and getting what you want from them.  (It took years of begging just to get a few words from Jerry Goldsmith on a commentary for PLANET, but there's still many things I'm still waiting for.)  So, my attitude was always "they'll probably just re-released the same theatrical cut of BATTLE they always have before."  If I cared that much about the movie -- which I don't because I think it's a bad film -- I'd have recalled that the Fox Movie Channel has run the extended version several times which means they know which version is preferred by fans.

Anyway, the petition has done one thing for sure -- gotten us the e-mail address of Steve Feldstein at Fox.

So, now the question is where do we go from here?  This so-called "Ultimate Edition" isn't giving us everything we want.  What fans such as myself and Joe Russo want to know is just what's in the Fox archives -- such as cut scenes, the preview version of CONQUEST, behind-the-scenes stills -- and will we ever see them?
If the original version of CONQUEST no longer exists, then it no longer exists, but it would be nice to know.  What about the scenes from PLANET involving Nova's pregnancy?  Or the escape party being stopped by gorillas outside the ape's city?  We know these scenes were shot because we have stills from them.  Where are they?

Then you have my apology for misstating your opinion. And you may very well be correct that the petition merely got a response from FOX. But getting a response from FOX is a victory in itself.

When the petition was started, the goal was to get it to FOX by end of January. Unlike Videotape, DVDs don't need a long lead time. Recently a client of mine was negotiating a sponsorship on the DVD to Ice Age II which comes out on DVD on March 28th too. The deadline to conclude the deal was last week because the DVD was scheduled for final authoring this week with burning scheduled to begin in late February.

Studios don't warehouse DVDs waiting for a release date. The release date is based on the window of when the DVD can be burned & packaged and is shipped straight to distributors. Once the burning date is set everthing works backwards from there. Most of the lead time is devoted to creating the graphics, menus and special features content. Converting the actual film to digital takes very little time.

FOX most likely had a digitized version of the uncut Battle from when it aired on the FOX Movie Channel a few years ago. It wouldn't take that much time to do whatever fixes were needed for a DVD. Film and Video take a long time to reprocess, digital media doesn't.

You may be right that FOX had this planned before the petition appeared. And it may just be a coincidence that suddenly promotional materials for the upcoming release are now mentioning the extended version of Battle when they didn't before. But none of us work at FOX so no one can say with 100% certainty what actually happened.

One thing is true, the petition and thus the voice of the fans did get noticed by FOX. Whether it resulted in the uncut Battle to be released or just alerted FOX that it was a selling point for the new releases, FOX did respond to the fans. That is something that all the fans who signed the petition and helped promote it, as well as those fans who've been writing letters to FOX for years, can take pride in.

In regard to starting an effort to get FOX to release more deleted scenes and other extras for the 40th Anniversary in 2 years, Roger Alford of the Forbidden Zone site along with a few others are in the process of organizing a campaign. We'll keep you posted and let everyone know what they can do to support the effort.

I kind of disagree with this. It's true that the actual pressing of DVDs doesn't require that much time, but what I'm talking about is the restoration of the film elements themselves.  The transfer the Fox Movie Channel showed of the extended BATTLE looked horrible, and even the one of the Japanese LD isn't perfect.  I'm expecting the sequels on these new DVDs to look and sound as good as PLANET does in its 35th Anniversary edition, in fact I'm even hoping PLANET will be improved a little, so I would hope that several months worth of work was done on them!  I'd rather they took their time and got to to looking as good as they can.  I recall reading that anamorphic transfers for all the APES were being prepared well before the 35th Anniversary edition of PLANET came out and that was two years ago.

.html.htmlDidn't want to let this day go by without mentioning that Jerry Goldsmith was born on February 10, 1929.  PLANET OF THE APES wouldn't be the same film without his music.  I'm so very glad that the man was there for the movie and for so many other movies that I love.  I miss him.

True, but unlike the days of Videotape when all the restorations were
done by to the film itself which took a very long time, these fixes are
now done on computer to the digitized version which takes only a
    fraction of the time.

    Hey Tim!

    Almost...

Some of those pix you posted are Rick Baker tests for the Burton
remake. I've created a folder in the files section in which you'll
find the 5 pix I have of the Winston tests. (A couple of which Tim has
already posted) The older chimp is Stan Winston himself and the
younger one is his son or nephew.

Th eimage of what appears to be an Orangutan mask appeared on Ebay
many years ago and was credited to the Stan Winston studios - I've
added it only for interest and can't vouch for its authenticity.

Lastly the warrior gorilla pic looks like it's based on General Ollo
from the Adventure comics - does anyone know anything about this?

By chance yesterday, I found a David Gerrold interview on
www.tvshowsondvd.com, which led me to his web site (www.gerrold.com),
where you can download his book "The Trouble with Tribbles" for free
    as a PDF file.

The only mentions of "Apes" I could find:

    From his bio:

and the novelization of Battle For The Planet Of The Apes. (Gerrold
can be seen as a dead ape in one of the movie's climactic scenes.)

    And his bibliography:

    NOVELIZATIONS AND TIE-INS
Battle For The Planet Of The Apes
Award Books, 1973, movie novelization. (Somebody had to do it.)

The tvshowsondvd interview is very interesting, especially if you're a
"Star Trek" or "Land of the Lost" fan.

Subject: We Did It!!!! Extended Battle sets the things straight
    .html
    That's my two cents:

The MOVIES are obviously the only source of *CANON* - every piece of
FOOTAGE available is *CANON* whatever that same footage is NOT
exclusive or elitarian, but a common benefit of EVERYONE.
Novels and comics, they are nice 'toys' to play around things, but
no-where to be taken as primary source.

The deleted scenes of BATTLE weren't *CANON*, since not EVERYONE
could purchase the japanese laserdisc version. I couldn't, for
    example! LOL.

Now that the deleted scenes will be properly restored in the
magnificent EXTENDED EDITION, they will ascent to the *CANON*
    heaven - LOL!

All in all, 'BATTLE' is my absolute favourite sequel to POTA - I
like the 'Mad Max-esque' flavour in it, and the make-up job is
astonishing. I love the final confrontation, very well-staged, and I
think that the missing bits will enhance it a lot. CAESAR shines
throughout the whole movie, and many new characters are inserted
    into the 'Ape-mithology'.
I don't know why so many self-proclamed Ape-fans in the past have
snarled and sneered to 'BATTLE', but now we have a chance to set the
things straight for the very first time. In fact, it seems that the
news regarding the EE is making 'BATTLE' popular all over
    the "place".

    Good.

No, no. GREAT! Virgil has spoken.

    .html
    Okay,

Premise: do not reply to this message by 'unspoiling' new flubs,
because NO-ONE has really the right to 'taint' the memory of these
fantastic, cosmical, PERFECT MOVIES. Okay? I'm not joking.

Days ago, I thought and meditated about the 'flub' (???? I don't
really see it like a blooper; the scenes are really fast-moving, and
those mistakes are really ininfluent and unnoticeable) of the "real
mouth" you can spot in the interrogation scene (ESCAPE - chapter
III) and in the 'Fight Like Apes!' scene (BATTLE - chapter V). I
felt very depressed, I always considered the MAKE-UP in POTA as the
greatest achievement EVER in that specific sector.

Then, mechanisms in my mind started to move in the right direction...

    ... and NOW!

The Humanoid Apes are supposed to have a more "carnivourous-
oriented" facial conformation, and that implies their tooth aren't
so similar to those of the "COMMON" monkeys or apes. That's pretty
obvious to me. They can speak, after all.
Now... both the SCENES mentioned above... involve... the same
GENETIC BRANCH! ZIRA and CAESAR are mother & son! What a beautiful
    illumination I had!
The 'soft pulp' of their dental apparatus is genetically designed to
be more prominent in comparison with the other Humanoid Apes, it's
just a TRAIT of their genome (By the way, I'm not saying they are
Mutants! Just SLIGHTLY different from the other Humanoid Apes. After
all, are we HUMANS all the same ????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). So when they
panicked or are way too much hungry, they open the mouth in a way
you can SLIGHTLY, BARELY see the 'soft pulp' (the real mouth, but
    it's very unnoticeable).

As far as concerned Cornelius's bare neck (or wists, for instance)
well... do the H-APES ocasionally shave some parts of their bodies?
    I think so!

Excellent, looks like we can have the sort of debate that Doctor Who
fans live for--what is canon and what isn't.I'm ready to be blown to
bits by this particular canon, but, for me, the novels are canon.Apes
started with Boulle's novel and everything after is just an
interpretation of the original novel. The movie novels are my canon
because they are fuller, more detailed and, frankly, better than their
respective movies.Conquest and Escape,in particular, are the true
chronicle of those tales, and are more vivid, engaging and moving than
the movies. The four TV Series adaptations are canon, in my view as they
are more faithful to the spirit of the original scripts and fully

Through Netflix I recently rented the entire first season of THE RAT PATROL (1966).  This was the first series done by Eric Braedon.  Of course, he was then know by his real name, Hans Gudegast.  He was made to change his name when Universal decided to star him in 1968 in COLOSSUS: THE FORBID PROJECT.  They called him in Spain where he was filming 100 RIFLES with Burt Reynolds (a film with a Jerry Goldsmith score!) and told him the name change was a condition of the deal.  Here's what "Hans" had to say about it:

"I said, 'No way' and hung up.  But I thought about it and thought about it and finally accepted it.  It was the most painful and idiotic process I ever went through.  I needed something I could identify with, so I took Braeden from the name of my village in Germany and Eric was a family name.  Universal was very good about the whole thing -- they left it all up to me.  I wouldn't have cared to go through life as Ty, Tab or Rock!"

My source for this quote is the inside cover of the COLOSSUS laserdisc.

I think I'd be the best person to interview Braeden, but I know that Joe Russo tried for his book, but because Braeden is a "big star" in Daytime TV it was impossible to get his agent to ask him to spend time being interviewed about so minor a subject in his career.  Braeden doesn't have such a large involvement with "The Young and the Restless" as he used to, but he's still a very busy guy.

Here's a bio of him from the Internet Movie Databse:

German actor in America who began his career playing Nazis and eventually became a star of daytime soap operas. Born Hans Gudegast in Kiel, Germany, during the Second World War, he was a superb athlete who excelled in track-and-field events. As a teenager he immigrated to the USA and worked in Texas and Montana as a translator, a cowhand, and a lumber millhand. His athleticism won him a scholarship to Montana State University. While attending college, he and friend Bob McKinnon made a film, The Riverbusters, about their successful attempt to be the first men to take a boat from the source to the mouth of the Salmon river and back again. He traveled to Los Angeles in hopes of finding a distributor for the documentary, but instead found that his handsome visage and accented English made him a valuable commodity as an actor. He appeared in small parts under his real name before landing the leading role of the antagonist, Captain Hans Dietrich, on the World War II TV series "The Rat Patrol" (1966). The series was a hit, and Gudegast's sympathetic German officer was very popular. He appeared in a few movies and television films thereafter in supporting roles, then was given the lead in Universal's science-fiction computer thriller Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970). His delight at this huge career boost was muted by the studio's insistence that he change his name. With extreme reluctance, he agreed and became known subsequently as Eric Braeden. Braeden worked continuously in television movies for the next decade. He also worked on Broadway and in Los Angeles area theatre. In 1980 he reluctantly accepted a role in a daytime drama, "The Young and the Restless", and gained a stardom in this medium that had just eluded him in film and primetime TV. As lead Victor Newman, Braeden brought a gravity and a strong center to the program. Amazingly handsome and athletic into his sixties, Braeden maintained the charisma that first brought him notice in "The Rat Patrol." His infrequent film work during his nearly quarter century on "The Young and the Restless" included a prominent role as John Jacob Astor in Titanic (1997). A five-time Emmy nominee for his "Y&R" role (he won in 1998), he was also nominated eleven times for the Soap Opera Digest Outstanding Leading Actor Award , winning three times. He was appointed, in 1987, along with Henry Kissinger, Paul Volker, Steffi Graf, Alexander Haig, and Katherine Graham, to the German-American Advisory Board, and in 1991 received the Federal Medal of Honor from the president of his native land, Germany. He married his college sweetheart Dale Russell in 1966. Their son, Christian Gudegast is a screenwriter.

I also know he was honored in Israel a couple years ago for some charity or other.

"Hans" was also in an episode of Ron Harper's  first TV show "Garrison's Gorillas" in 1968.

Let me tell you something now so you can remember it later, OK?

    My experience as a film buff has lead me to this general discovery;
no matter how terrible, truly bad, or obscure the movie, somewhere on the planet there's someone who loves it and thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.  I roam the Internet Movie Database a lot and I've come across some comments left by fans of this movie or other that have literally made my jaw drop.

So, you're love of BATTLE doesn't surprise me at all.  I understand it completely.  I don't share it -- but I understand it.

The movie novels are my canon
because they are fuller, more detailed and, frankly, better than their
respective movies.Conquest and Escape,in particular, are the true
chronicle of those tales, and are more vivid, engaging and moving than
the movies. The four TV Series adaptations are canon, in my view as they
are more faithful to the spirit of the original scripts and fully
delineate the three main characters in ways that the series itself
failed to do.Likewise with the three adaptations of the animated series-
    - excellent stories that bring thses otherwise two dimensional
characters to life. Finally, the 2001 Apes novels---two are never seen
on film, neither are the two teen novels--they are the only source for
those tales and, by definition, must be canon.Just my view. I'm running

What I like about the pota novels is, the stories and characters are developed more fully. This is difficult to do with the time limits of movies and tv. Elaine

    Dear Rory,

Stamp this all over your (delicate) mental structures.

    I watched MILLIONS of movies. I'm a semi-professional sci-fi writer,
that's my job, but also a very insightful "movie buff" for vocation.

BATTLE is a very enjoyable movie, filled with an undeniable flavour
and much, much more "vibe" than the MOST of the crappy blockbuster
    movies released today.

BATTLE is a very good movie by ALL technical means, except for the
fact that it could have been more developed story-wise, even longer
    in terms of length.

Don't treat me like a nuts, please. I am not.

    Best wishes,

    T.C.

I have to agree with this...Today, Hollywood basically cranks
out "cookie-cutter" replicas of old TV shows and weak/no plot films...

I remember seeing the full version, complete with the bomb sequences,
on TV...That's basically all the more development the story needs,
IMHO...=)...Can't wait for the DVD release!...

Should we, as a group, make up a list of all the related material we know about and then suggest it for each film? For example, 'J. Lee Thompson Directs...' should be on the CONQUEST DVD (since it shows him directing CONQUEST) as should 'A Look Behind the POTA' since that was out in 1972 and there was no mention of BATTLE, the 'That's Hollywood' should be on BATTLE since it covers all five films (plus there's not a lot of other bonus material that could be included), the NATO films should be included with the first two films respectively. Then there's the Simpsons, Family guy, and Futurama bits which shouldn't be a problem since they're all Fox properties.

Ditto for me. In fact, I respect Rory for sticking to his guns on that

Greg and I were discussing this when we met up at the MegoCon in 2004.
One of the best scenes in ESCAPE is where the President and Hasslein are
debating what to do about Cornelius & Zira's unborn child. Hasslein's
whole "Am I obeying God's will or defying it?" pondering really go a long
way to humanize him (to a point, anyway). He's a very interesting
character, and in one sense fits in with that "No one person is 100% good
or 100% evil" character philosophy that David Milch uses.

For some reason, it seems very apropos that this scene took place during
the night. The fates of three individuals being debated in a partially
lit office while the rest of the world sleeps. It adds a little more
    atmosphere to the film.

    T.C.

    Dear T.C.,

You obviously have very strong opinions -- such as that I'm treating you like a nut, which I don't think is the case -- but your opinion doesn't make a thing so.

The vast majority of opinion, from fans, film buffs and movie critics, is that BATTLE is a bad, weak, substandard, or, at best, a mediocre movie.

Now, you can say you don't care what anyone else says, but then "Who cares?"  Only you.

He's a quote I think you should read:

"I was never happy with it, and we were struggling the whole time.  Probably in the editing room we continued that struggle -- juggle some scenes, cut some others too ruthlessly.  Then we found we had a short film and I think we started to build up the beginning by going over other thoughts.  I consider it a mess.  I was very upset.  And it was a cheap film."  Page 217, "Planet of the Apes Revisited"

Those words are from BATTLE's director J. Lee Thompson.

Now, as a serious film buff, as an adult and not just some aging 10-year-old, and as a fan of PLANET OF THE APES... when the director of BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES tells me "I consider it a mess,"... guess what?

    IT'S A MESS!

    -- Rory

    P.S.

If you love BATTLE and think it's a great movie, good for you and good for the movie -- it's loved.  But, you're in the minority and that's simply an unpleasant fact you should learn to live with, I'm afraid.  And I agree with you that most so-called "Blockbusters" today are crap -- most movies today are crap! -- but that doesn't suddenly turn BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES into a great movie.

Movie critics are mediocre people at their best. Film buffs are so-
so nerds who don't understand anything and pretend to be believed

They are vocal about WHAT they like, and what they like is sometimes

First of all I don't like hunting.
Second, I no longer shoot animals.
