I'd heard it was cut (and never finished) because they (the powers that be) didn't think it added to the story.

This is a no brainer...YES the sequence WAS filmed--I believe in our
book PLANET OF THE APES REVISITED,there is a photo from ESCAPE
illustrating the deleted "earths destruction" scene (from the point of
view from inside the apeonauts' space capsule). The sequence was
definatly FILMED but I claim foul on anyone who says they viewed a
released print of the film, theatrical or television, that included
it.Please provide the details of when and where there was a version
that included this footage. This is the first time in my history as an

I was just re-reading about this in PLANET OF THE APES REVISITED. It
was cut because of the cost. It was never completed.

That's what I recall...They did film it, SFX and all, but they thought
the opening as released in the film was more dramatic...That's one of
the reasons they filmed at the portion of the beach where the Statue of
Liberty mock-up was built...Until you hear the helicopter, it appears
as if you are on Cornelius' beach...It starts your emotions off on the
wrong foot, leading you into the "upside downedness" of the movie...

You know what it is, Beve?...I think there are enough photos of the
scene published; added to the fact that you probably read the novel
and the Marvel adaptation (and maybe the script?), which all have the
scene intact...Given the passage of time, and the way they add
in/take out scenes on TV, it's probable that you thought you'd seen
it...=)

I remember that I was uncertain as to whether I had actually seen the
bomb sequences from BFTPOTA on TV, or whether my memory was faulty,
until people on this site said it had been aired in the 70s...

Don't let the extremists on this site rattle you...=) Alright, guys,

the POTA community -- Rhodes, Trundy, Pierre -- thoughtful!...As a fan

Don't worry about it, I have memories of things in movies that ended up not
being there on another viewing (not due to being edited).

The cut scene is in the Power Records version, the comic version and I'm
sure the novel version. That's enough to insert it into someone's memory and
over time, believe they saw it in the film.

I have no problem that POTA2001 is different from the previous movies (costumes, characters, etc.). My problem is it's a bad movie. Yes, if it had been called something else we could just ignore it like all the other bad movies that come out every year, often by Fox. - - - Jeff

People might have had a more positive response to the movie if it had been called something else. I don't see 2001 as in the same universe as the previous movies. It seems that most fans were expecting soemthing similar to the previous movies. Elaine

        Sigh.

I guess that the only thing that has the "deleted scenes from ESCAPE" is the Marvel PLANET OF THE APES magazine, Issue #13.  This was reissued in the nineties from Malibu Graphics.  Still, wouldn't it have been nice to had an entire story of how Milo, Cornelius and Zira discovered the ship and launched it just in time?  An entire movie could have been made here on this subject!

Maybe...But, as a writer, I like consistancy in a novel...I gave up on
the POTA01 book when Thade started out as a gorilla, then changed to a
chimp; and Limbo started out as a chimp and changed to an
          orangutan...Bad writing all the way...

I was only seven years old in '66, so it's unlikely I'd have read the book if someone had even given it to me.  I never heard of POTA until I saw a TV commercial for the movie in February 1968.

But, I do have to wonder what it must have been like to have read the book when there was no film version to compare it to?  I'll never know.

That's one of the reasons I wish Conquest didn't have the opening

Armando's helicopter, Escape and Conquest would be linked with opening
shots of a pan to a soaring Helicopter.

.html.htmlAll right, just to be fair to Bev I'll tell you that Joe Russo has told me he has a friend who claims that in the late seventies or early eighties he saw a print of PLANET on TV that showed Taylor, after escaping from his cage, getting into the water of that lake in front of Ape City and of hiding behind the wagon as it crossed the causeway into the city!

Now, most of us here have seen stills of this and know it was filmed, but I've never seen any such thing in any print I've seen of PLANET.  I don't know how this guy can claim such a thing, especially since such footage would interrupt Goldsmith's cue "No Escape," but as far as I know from Joe, this guy insists he saw it.

And, as if that wasn't enough for you all to think about I'm now going to tell you that I -- VERY VIVIDLY -- remember seeing a few seconds of footage in PLANET when it was a double-feature with BENEATH in 1971 (the "Two Apes for the Price of One" thing) that I've never seen since.

It was after the shot of Taylor getting his caged washed down by the gorilla with the hose, just after the scene of Taylor in surgery.  The short shot I remember was of Lucius letter that gorilla out of the room trailing the hose and then closing the cage door behind him.  Just as Julius does this you see Zira walk up.

If you look at the movie now I believe you can hear a brief audio clip, a fraction of a second, of part of this shot as you hear the cage door slam just before the cut to Julius letting Zira into the room.

          Check it out.

I'm pretty sure the character was Ulysses (a nice nod to the source
material) but there was another POTA game (which I've never seen) for
Nintendo's Gameboy. By all accounts it's a pretty dull 'run-and-jump'
affair with no plot to speak of. Maybe that's the one that featured 'Ben'

I remember when I first read the novel, a couple years after I'd seen the film.  I found it quite strange and have to say I really didn't like it.  But, I read it again when I was fourteen and found it so riveting that I actually thought, "Why didn't they film this?"

I've hoped ever since that a faithful filming of Boulle would be attempted, but I fear I'll never live to see it.

          .html
Just saw this posted by someone who purchased it here in the UK:

Forget the R2 set its a ripoff.

The R2 set is simply everything that has gone before + the cartoons.
No effort has gone into it whatsoever.

The R1 set has the 5 original movies very spruced up.

The first film is the 35th Anniversary version, but from Beneath to
Battle ,all films are remastered(stated on the boxes),and look
it,much better than the R2 versions, and all the other 4 are also in
5.1,unlike the R2 which are in standard surround except Escape which
          is mono.

Best of all,the R1 version of Battle is the extended version over 96
minutes, while the R2 set is the same old version we had before.
So anyone who has "invested" in the R2 Ape head may be sensible to
shift it on ebay before its widely known what a ripoff it is,and get
          the R1 ser instead.

The cartoons will be available individually(on R1 at least) in the
          next few weeks.

But the R2 set may be going cheap sooner than you think.

With Apehead releases simultaneously on R1 and R2 its incredible that
we have this blatantly inferior version in the UK

total cost was under £80 including posting.I had expected getting

I believe that on Chris Shields' ANSANAUT website, there was a story called "Milo:  Rider From The World's End" that was a superb story on the finding of the third ship.

Right, but I could swear I saw a shot like the gorillas' shot that
fades from live action to the projected scene on the wall...Brent is
being led by the children in live action and it fades to the

marathons in 1974 that, during the courtrom scene in PLANET, Charlton
Heston tore off his robe and did a Can-Can dance naked across Dr.Zaius'
desk and then threw his arms around the two gorilla soldiers and

I don't remember that but I do remember Dr. Zaius doing his Elvis impression.

Seriously, one thing I do remember from the GO APE! festivals is at the end of PLANET after the final credits faded out another screen came up saying "THIS IS NOT THE END. THE STORY CONTINUES IN "BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES" COMING SOON TO A THEATER NEAR YOU. Does anyone else remember seeing this?

Not me. I thought your meaning was perfectly clear. Only someone trying
              hard
not to understand what you meant would have had any trouble. I suspect the
comment was merely meant to tease you, nothing more. Humans are very
strange animals indeed -- not like we apes.

I never saw that!  Maybe it was done for a certain release in a some regions of the country.

I had mt Ape Head delivered today and I gasped when I saw just how good

everytime for UK buyers, but I bought mine from Amazon US, to get the
US version. With exchange rates how they are, and ordering early, my
total cost was under £80 including posting.I had expected getting
walloped in duties but, correctly or not, I didn't get charged.I'm

Yeah, it looks like all you APES fans in the UK are going to have to get the Region 1 release.

I don't remember seeing that either.....I wonder if
they attached it to just the "Go APE" prints that were
sent out specifically for the festival....odd that it
would say "coming soon to a theatre near you"...it
should have said "coming up next! Go to the bathroom
              and get mor popcorn now!"

Do you remember it in just regular type or was it in
              Ape font with pics?

Ha ha!  I've seen that on Mark Longmire's superb APES parody on his site.  And yes, I do remember the GO APE festival--this would have been in the summer of 1973 in my hometown (Topeka, KS) and that came up on the screen in our theater.

I saw it too in 1973 (in Brooklyn NY at the long-gone Benson theatre) but would have remembered if that popped on the screen. Maybe they didn't use it in the N.Y. prints of the film.

From the first time I saw the film fully on CBS, I remember seeing a
scene where two of the mutants were walking through the city carrying out
Caspay's edict and saying "Adults to the cathedral, children indoors" a
few times. Aside from the fact that I was only 7 or 8 at the time and
later out figured out that I probably imagined it, the scene really
wouldn't make sense anyway because it was supposed to be a "public
                thought projection".

I also remember the gorilla army audibly gasping when they came upon the
ruins of NYC in the desert.
