It's as bloody awful as Burton's movie -- AND it has a picture from BENEATH on the front cover.

As soon as I clicked on your link I knew it was an April Fool's joke, James!  Mediamercenary.com indeed!

How long did it take you to work on that one?  Did you start back in February planning this?

James, you really had me going. I just watched ESCAPE the
night before last and when I read the word about the Easter Egg,
I was reading to go home sick from work tonight to go check it
out.

You shouldn't play with other's emotions like that! LOL!

It's the Samsung Nuon player from a few years back, and it is VERY
sensitive, but I have gotten discs with flaws in the same place after
exchanging it, then going to another establishment, and not having a
problem... For instance, exchanging a Johnny Quest disc to Target 3
times, still having the problem, then exchanging the disc at Tower
records or best buy and the copy plays no problem. I think some
establishments get a price break to take substandard presses and sell
them, thus the 32.99 Legacy price at Circuit City.

Has anyone found any real easter eggs(other than the ones from the
previous release)? I haven't looked extensively, but I know in the
Conquest special features, you highlight the chimps face and you get
the conquest behind the scenes film that is on the Planet supp disc.

How old is your DVD player, T?

But, one thing I do with EVERY disc I rent: Before I play them -- I give them a bath!

Yes, indeed.  I run the DVD under the tap with some warm water and clean them with some liquid soap and my fingers, feeling for any little piece of whatnot that might be stuck to the surface.  I then rinse the disc off good and dry it with a towel.  Works great!  But, just make sure it's good and dry before you put it in your player!

It's a few years old, but still works fine.
I lean the discs but not with soap & water.
I spray disc cleaner on them and use a
hand cranked cleaning machine.  I don't
trust those motor driven ones.  I like to
vary the pressure on it to get it clean.

The truth is (and I just found this out) there are Easter Eggs on both
the Conquest and Escape DVDs. Just go to the Special Features section
and keep hitting UP on your remote. On the Conquest disc one of the
chimps faces will be hilighted. On the Escape disc the outline of an
ape appears below Cornelius' shoulder.

Damn shame they couldn't have put the BENEATH NATO film as an Easter Egg on BENEATH.

.html.htmlHere's the new PLANET insert artwork in the new DVD.  The usual picture of Caesar from CONQUEST used, and I don't like the red color.  I don't mind them using the Statue of Liberty image since it's still kind of a teaser.

I've just spent the afternoon redoing it to fit my tastes and an email of that will follow.

And because of that, this list is an honor roll of sorts. These people represent the best of POTA fandom who came together, despite cynical naysayers, to support a common goal for the good of all POTA fans and got the attention of FOX in the process. They all deserve our thanks.

Look, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but to me it's pretty obvious from the quality of the transfer that this "Extended Version" of BATTLE was "in the can" long before your petition.  Even the audio was cleaned up and remixed for a DD 5.1 soundtrack.  This just doesn't happen in so short a time, AFTER the release has already been announced.

But, you did get the attention of Fox.  That was nice.

.html.htmlI've noticed that on the new DVDs for the sequels, in the language sections, you'll see an icon for "THX Optimizer."  Click on it and follow the intructions and this will help anyone with a high-end video display and surround sound properly adjust their video and audio settings to view these films as the people at THX think you should.

Check it out for anyone here that's found BENEATH too light, or CONQUEST too dark.  After you've made adjustments they even run a short clip from the movie.

I just watched a little of ESCAPE and found that if I turn the center channel down a little stereo separation of the music is much better while not affecting dialogue or sound effects.

Also, the picture quality on these new transfers is so detailed you can actually see fine details on the ape appliences and where rubber ends and real skin begins.  It's hard to keep from freeze-framing every couple of minutes.

Well you are entitled to your opinion. But that's all it is, your opinion. None of us works for FOX so none of us can state when or what happened. Plus in this digital age, things can be done on a computer in a fraction of the time (and cost) than when they had to reprocess film negatives.

An eight year old child could have done a better job of it.
It's like Fox wants to punish us, and they want to be paid
for doing it.  They must have some real jackasses in
charge over there.  I think we should form a POTA
marketing group!  I mean, if we don't know what POTA
fans want, who does?  And they should be paying us
for all the extra money we make them.  And I don't
mean paying us in free stuff.  I mean REAL money!

Well you are entitled to your opinion. But that's all it is, your opinion. None of us works for FOX so none of us can state when or what happened. Plus in this digital age, things can be done on a computer in a fraction of the time (and cost) than when they had to reprocess film negatives.

My motive is nothing less but to be realistic.  You got the attention of Fox, given the way they behave that is an achievement, but I simply can't see the time window here as large enough for them to have honored the wish of the petition if the thing hadn't already been done.  I simply think it MUST have been planned by Fox long ago.  The petition was merely happy coincidence.

The interesting thing is, when I bought the disc in 2001, only some
of the nuon features worked. The "screensaver" is the planet of the
apes logo bouncing on the screen replacing the samsung logo , and
there is a "mega zoom" that lets you zoom in even more than normal,
and the chapter (how do you spell kyron?) is different. I could not
access the nuon features on the disc menu, however and blamed it on
the player. Like Rory, I really didn't want to buy another copy of
the Burton piece of #$#$ in the Ultimate collection, but now I'm glad
I did, because the nuon features in the menu work on this disc. (Go
      figure)The features include-

Viddies - which are video clips and clues to figure out the plot
(maybe Thade went back in time and beat Marky mark to earth, thus the
      ending....)

Gamma zooms- again film clips pointing out small details like the
organ grinder, Linda Harrison (let's you zoom on the clip)

Hyper slides- which are sketches and paintings compared to final film

Chapter Selection- A more elaborate chapter selection menu.

Picture and sound quality are seem identical, maybe slight
      improvement picture.

I don't think any of the features are "earthshattering" but just an
interesting addition, most of which I think could be accomplished on
      a standard dvd player.

Okay, guys, I don't think "The Head" looks like Caesar, and I don't
think I'll display it, BUT, you have to acknowledge Fox took a risk on
a dead franchise with an extremely limited fan base (this isn't Star
Wars or Alien), with this very ambitious release. The lack of
distributers carrying the dvds (or extremely low stock) is a perfect
example of how retailers are not interested in POTA product. Yes, I
would have loved the original conquest cut, along with many other
extras, but no other series has found such an elaborate U.S. release
(The Matrix package was cool, a close second maybe, but I'm not a fan
of that series) Given the sideshow failure, amoungst others, I think we
should be gracious and appreciative of the attempt. (I am ecstatic re
Conquest framing, the extended Battle, and finally the toons.)

Ursus, Zira, and Nova are all in the game.

Yeah, and with POTA2K1 and "The Head"
the risk has been that they'll kill it off completely.

I watched parts of the trailer for the 2001 piece of #$#$ tonight.  I had to turn it off quick before it made me want to go into the other room and blow my head off!

I'd have appreciated all this much more in a couple years when it's the 40th Anniversary -- and with a few more extras thrown in.  Now, it looks like we'll get nothing on the 40th.  Maybe, just maybe, a HD or Blu-ray DVD release, but only maybe.

BTW, does anyone know why movie previews are called "trailers"?...Be

I was looking at the beginning of Escape From POTA and when they had the
opening credits and noticed something with the scene behind Ricardo
      Montalbon's credit.

One part of the image in the scene shifts in relation to the other. It's the
sort of thing you sometimes see in split screen scenes that have the same
actor playing both roles. Both sides of the scene were filmed at seperate
times and joined together as a split screen.

Well, there was no need for that in the scene with RM's credit, it's a scene
of the beach shore with the helicopter leaving (with the apeonauts)

      Then I noticed it.

The dust on the helicopter is moving inward: The shot of the helicopter
leaving is actually a helicopter landing in reverse.

I suppose that they found they needed a shot of the helicopter leaving but
only had a shot of a helicopter landing. If they simply reversed the whole
shot, the waves on the shore in the scene would run backwards as well (and
would be quite noticable). So, they did a little slight of hand split
      screen.

The part of the scene with the shore runs forward motion is split screened
with the reverse motion helicopter portion.

      Hey Rich,

A quick search on the web for 'Planet apes walkthru' will net you
dozens of sites of which this is one example:

      <http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.htmlrlid=45217&rid=42245>

It can't compare to the white knuckle ride, edge-of-your-seat thrills
that playing the game offers but it should answer any questions you
      may have.

I thought the game was okay, nothing special but it did offer yet
another 'reimagining' of the tale and one that was more enjoyable than
the version that hit cinemas in 2001. It's mildly interesting that it
seems to have been produced by a French production team.

Regarding ESCAPE, I wish that the deleted footage when Cornelius, Zira and Milo took off in the third ship, witnessed the destruction of the planet, went through the Hasslein Curve, and landed in the ocean would have been included on this latest DVD reissue...but I was told that it didn't, the movie started out when the third ship with our chimpanzee friends was floating in the ocean, and the eventual rescue, etc.  I would have considered purchasing the set if the deleted scenes had been included...not only in ESCAPE, but BENEATH also had some.

        Then I noticed it.

i could handle some of the wackiness if it was set in the far far far future of earth.
but i had trouble accepting that a nuclear war could cause such amazing mutations in such a short time.
but regardless, the stories were very interesting.

But back in the 50's 60's and 70's people naively thought that was the
honest truth. It was only later that we began to realize that nuclear
war, even a limited one, meant total extinction.

No, as I had told Bruce, I'd heard that it actually was filmed but cut to the budget.

That footage has never been shown because from what I heard it was never completed...I had heard that the special effects portions were not completed though the scenes of the apes in spacesuits at the controls was.
