I saw it too in 1973 (in Brooklyn NY at the long-gone Benson theatre) but would have remembered if that popped on the screen. Maybe they didn't use it in the N.Y. prints of the film.

The "GO APE" reissue of all five APES movies didn't officially happen until the summer of 1974, but in 1973 many theatres did show all five films or combinations of two or three or four as simple re-issues.

That's right I forgot about that. When "Battle" premiered in the summer of
1973 they showed all five movies together then did it again the following
summer of 1974.

All I remember seeing was "Two Apes for the Price of One!" -- POTA and
BTPOTA...And "Three Apes for the Price of One!" -- POTA, BTPOTA and
EFTPOTA...Someone had cut out the shot of C, Z and M on the beach and
taped it to the "Two Apes" poster...Then I remember the "Go Ape!"
festival in San Francisco...

Because there was no mention of him whatsoever in the first two movies.
Zach
Why should there have been mention of Milo in the first two movies?
You have to remember that those films weren't made with sequels in mind. Milo wasn't invented by Dehn until he was asked by Fox to write yet a third film. It wasn't until the third film that the APES film series was born and Dehn started writing with the intention that there would possibly be further installments.
It should also be remembered that as far as there being an "APES Saga," there really only is one within the last three films in the series -- that saga being the life of Caesar, his birth in ESCAPE, his ascendency in CONQUEST, and finally his struggles in BATTLE.
PLANET and BENEATH really aren't part of this saga. PLANET is Taylor's story, and BENEATH is merely a sequel to the first film. After the last three films were made, then BENEATH, and to a lesser extent PLANET, became prelude to them, but they're really not part of the saga contained in the last three films.
Most APES fans like to bundle all the films together as one long story, and 20th Century-Fox is guilty of this too, much to my displeasure, but if you look at it with a scholarly eye, much as an academician like Cornelius would do, it really just isn't so.

Also, in our theater, they didn't sell popcorn, they sold bananas and peanuts the whole time! I hadn't eaten that many bananas and peanuts until that day...oh well, I guess that they were more nutritious than candy bars! Zach -------Original Message-------

Do you remember it in just regular type or was it in

Yeah, there were re-issues of the GO APE release, but if you have the posters or pressbook for that release it will have the year 1974 on it.

Let's all meet in Page, Arizona on Sunday, May 21st (the 39th Anniversary of the first day of filming there on PLANET in 1967). We could all take a tour boat ride on Lake Powell and see the spot where the spaceship sank.

I think that's great, but not quite good enough (Sorry, James ;).
Three things I'd do further is try to get a sliver more background above the "Somewhere in the Universe..." type (The S is too close to the top edge. This would mean shrinking the type and the artwork a bit and having more background on the sides and the top.)
I'd also get rid of the white bar-code box on the back. Who needs it? Looks like a great place for a photo to me, don't you think?
And finally -- and VERY IMPORTANTLY, I'd put a photo of one of the main characters over that bloody awful artwork of an ape's eye and nose on the bottom of the spine. (Me, I'd put Taylor in his astronaut outfit from the shot that's on card six of the original Topp's set [properly flipped, of course!], since Dr. Zaius is already on the front cover.

They didn't want to just crank out sequels. I don't know

He has a shop in NYC that sells just about any poster, photo, lobby
card, etc for any film you want. The store is a mess with a small
counter and a large inventory behind it. Before you go in you
really need to know what it is you are looking for. His staff will
bring out binder after binder to look at.
He use to sell at the Star Trek conventions in NY, the Famous
Monsters conventions and the Marvel comic convention that were in NY
at the old Commodore Hotel in NY. This was back in the 70's.
I purchased about 100 different photos, negative and slide from him
over the years on the apes and I use to sell them on E-bay a few
years ago. Some of the images are on my site, that I use to store
photo on for E-bay. Most of the photos were from Beneath and were
behind the scenes stuff.
Over the years I have gone back and purchased more shots but there
really in not much left in his ape collection. The "good stuff" is
mostly gone.
The photos on my web site will have my screen name on them. I will
have to find my scans and post them without the name. Give me a
little bit and I will get this done. <.html

.html Hey,
I was wondering:
When did the POTA phenomenon vanish back in its heydays? 1975 or
1976? Was the CARTOON technically a "success"? I know that both the
TV series and the cartoon series managed to get good ratings in
America, but not exceptional ones, and that's why they were
cancelled.
In UK, the TV series was a smash hit.
Then:
How is the ULTIMATE POTA collection selling in U.S.A right now? Is a
best-seller?
I'm wondering if the "casual buyers" truly grasped the REAL nature
of *THIS* specific DVD EDITION of BATTLE! It's the best presentation
of a still-previously-great sequel: I always loved BATTLE, it takes
a special place in my heart.
I see it like a great climax for the 'CAESAR TRILOGY', within the
economy of the five movies arc.
As footnote, I wanna add my two cents: in my view, the FIVE MOVIES
can be considered as a SAGA *ONLY* from CAESAR's perspective. The
first TWO movies are a tragic account of the Planet of the Apes I
and also depict the events which led Cornelius and Zira to escape
from Earth ----> Thus, CAESAR!
The last three depict the personal story of Caesar, and the how his
birth PREVENTED the "generation" of the Planet of the Apes I --- now
replaced by a new, peaceful "version".
I see a FRAME, a CIRCLE, a PARABLE, going from the FIRST movie to
the FIFTH. So I don't fully "get" all the criticism behind those who
don't consider the SAGA as such.
Even if it wasn't PLANNED as such, it still works. Marvellous!

Eric here, Leroy is my cat who can't type yet. I just
use his name, mine was taken.
As a kid I used to go to all the Sci Fi, Star Trek and
Comic convention in NYC. There was a dealer there who
sold movie posters and such. He had a tin of slides
and negatives that were not labeled except for "Ape
Photos" I bought a bunch of them and they sat in my
room for 20 years.
Going through my stuff a few years ago I developed a
few of the images and put them on E-bay. The first
time I put them up some of the photos went for $100
each.
He still has a store in NYC and I stopped in after my
first batch of E-bay stuff. He had some negatives and
slides left but most of the good stuff was gone. I
went through everything he had and pulled what I
thought would be of interest. Most of the stuff he
has left is what he put up on E-bay.
I have about 100 negative and slides and one of my
customers on E-bay said they were from the "??
collection" He knew who the photographer was. But I
don't remember who he said.
Some of the guys from Apemania purchased some of the
photos from me, they may know the origin of the
photos.
I will try to post the cleaned up images soon.
Thanks for the e-mail.

The TV show wasn't big in the ratings at all. My memory is that it was like 47th in the ratings or something. Only kids were watching. CBS should have tried moving the show to another night, but the attitude from the network was "let it die."
I was surprised that they made a cartoon series the next year. It only ran on Saturday mornings. It wasn't a huge hit, but it did OK, but not well enough to bring it back for another year, which was a rare thing anyway with Saturday morning shows.
The Marvel comic kept POTA alive for a little longer, but by 1976 it ended (as I recall, I could be wrong).
By the time STAR WARS became a phenomenon in 1977, POTA was a not so distant memory that quickly faded. Hardly anyone cared much about APES in the late seventies and during most of the eighties. Still, the movies were shown regularly on TV and a lot of kids who never saw them in the theatre were turned on to them.
They were released on video cassette, but in the early years of video prerecorded movies were expensive and I doubt the APES movies were huge sellers.
In the nineties APES nostalgia started to grow and the years between 1998 and 2001 were the heyday of that and eventually saw the making of the Tim Burton film, which unfortunately was an artistic disaster, though it made Fox lots of money.

.htmlHere are some more links to the photos.
I have a few files on the photos. The original negative and slides
I have are old and may not have been well cared for over the years.
I had a friend who has a photo studio scan and clean up some of the
images. At the moment I can't find that file, but I though you
would all like to see the images anyways.
Besides these photos I do have a lot more. But at the moment I don't
know where they are. I use to collect magazines, comics, POTA,
Circus, Carnival, Baseball Cards, LP, 45s and CD (I use to manage a
record store in NJ) I have so much "crap" I don't know where
anything is.
The photos are not lost just misplaced and they are well protected.
Most of the other photos are from Beneath and there are some cool
shots of the wall of fire with the Lawgiver and more make-up stuff
Sorry I don't think I have any photos of the subway or any of the NY
scenes, except for #20 listed below.
In this group there are a few photos of interest,
Number 3 - I have never seen this image anywhere else
Number 10 & 11 from Escape are kind of neat
Number 12, 13, 14 & 15 are of 2 of the three apes appliance I
purchased from the Ackerman Auction in NYC, must have been in the
late 80's. They were listed in the catalog as test makeup for the
first film. The third appliance was of the face Victor Buono pulls
off. I'll get a photo of this up. Just have to take it.
Number 16 is James Gregory getting his makeup on.
Number 18 is a wall of mutant masks. This image got wet somehow
over the years. My friend tried to make it look better, but it's a
mess. There is another image like this in the Russ, Landsman, Gross
book POTA Revisited on page 97.
Number 20 is the photo from Beneath with the kids, you were talking
about on the site a while ago.
Number 23 & 26 - I was watching the Behind the POTA the other day
and noticed this actor is in the same shirt as the photo.
Number 33 - Is a fun shot, not sure when it was taken.
There are some candid shots and also a lot of make-up shots.
Hope you guys like this stuff and I am glad I found a group that
enjoys these films as much as I do.

For some reason my last message did not include the "photo/1.jpg" as
part of the link.
The web address for the photos are
http://www.mcconnell-simmons.com/Ebay/pota/web/pota photo/1.jpg
http://www.mcconnell-simmons.com/Ebay/pota/web/pota photo/2.jpg
http://www.mcconnell-simmons.com/Ebay/pota/web/pota photo/3.jpg
etc, etc, etc.
There are a total of 44 photos up at the moment. Don't click on the
link, do a cut and past instead. Then you can just change the
number.
Here are some more links to the photos.

.html Eric,
Thanks for sharing these amazing images. There are some fans that like
to hoard stuff away and gloat but fortunately there are more, like
yourself, who are happy to share for the benefit of all.
I think I may be able to improve the quality of some of these pictures
and, given your permission it's something I'd like to try, as time
allows, over the coming weeks.
Thanks again,

and artists are really beginning to hit thier stride. That the
confines of the pages are struggling to cope with the passion and
ideas being squeezed into them. This comic practically sizzles with
energy, it's covers can barely contain the energy trapped between them.
Good things come to those who wait and I've been waiting for something
like this for far too long.

.htmlThere's been some updates to the Power Records section of Hunter's site. In addition to a scan of the display riser I recently acquired at the New York Comic-con, I've finally completed the long-gestating CD label/booklet project I'd been working on. Those who want to make their own Power Records CDs can download hi-res files to print disc labels, booklets showing the original album art and even tray cards (there's even a common image for the inner side of the tray card if you want to use a clear tray in your CD jewel case). Also now available are hi-res scans of all the album sleeves, including the 3 TV story 'Little LPs' and while I was at it I re-scanned and cleaned-up the 4 comic covers and re-built the comic PDFs and split them into three separate PDFs each for easier downloading.
My thanks to Michael Whitty and Tim Parati who provided me with scans for the TV Little LPs didn't have. Thanks also to
Hunter for hosting these files and for the time he spent yesterday completely reformatting the Power Records page on his site to best show the new additions. Whew! Now that I'm done with that, I'm going to DisneyWorld! Greg <.html

He has a shop in NYC that sells just about any poster, photo, lobby
card, etc for any film you want. The store is a mess with a small
counter and a large inventory behind it. Before you go in you
really need to know what it is you are looking for. His staff will
bring out binder after binder to look at.
He use to sell at the
Star Trek conventions in NY, the Famous Monsters conventions and the
Marvel comic convention that were in NY at the old Commodore Hotel in NY.
This was back in the 70's.
You were at those conventions in NY? So was I! In fact,
Jerry O was the only licensed dealer at the Famous Monsters Con and I was
working for him then (and lost my virginity at that con-but that's another story

Not always. They were going to erase the Monty Python series.
That was BBC practice back then. If it hadn't been for the PBS
station here in Dallas. No one outside of the UK would have
ever heard of them. But when other PBS stations in the US
also jumped on the bandwagon after hearing of their popularity
on KERA they became a worldwide phenomenon. I'm sure
nowadays the BBC thinks twice before wiping a series' tapes.

I think the answer was much simpler. In the US the POTA
TV series was aired on CBS opposite "Sanford and Son" and "Chico and the Man" on
NBC and many households still had only 1 TV in those days. The kids would
have liked to watch the show but Mom & Dad controlled the TV and what do you

.htmlI bought it at the New York comic-con back in February. It appears to be part of a display of some kind, whether for the comics, the albums or the 'Little LPs' I don't know. There are two notches along the bottom on the back of the piece that I presume would have allowed it to fit on top of a floor display or the back of a table or counter display. The actual piece measures 23 x 16 inches, but the file on Hunter's site is reduced so it fits on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet. Greg Michael Whitty <whitty@...> wrote:
