It'll be good for testing surround sound systems for your home theater.

Also in the SMASH magazine there was a fold out poster of The George
Washington Crossing the Delaware painting by Emanuel Leutze only with
ape faces painted over the faces. It is really cool... too bad I don't
own a scanner.....

At the first Star Trek convention (the hotel across
the street from MSG, I forget the name) I worked for a
guy who sold computer print outs of the Enterprise,
Spock and Kirk. I can't remember the name of the
computer magazine that did these. But the print outs
were huge and they were in X's and O's and like 50
    pages long.

I was a "geek" working in a magazine store in
Morristown NJ and the editor of the magazine asked me
to go to the convention with him. My parents were
worried but nothing happen, so don't think anything.
The guy just needed some help at the convention and I
got in free. I was happy. Our booth was set up
across the way from the Monster Times Both. I used to
love that magazine, they always seemed to have Apes
    stuff.

I also remember Vern Langdon at the first Famous
Monster of Filmland convention, he was a makeup
artist, and he pulled two people out of the audience
to put Ape make up on. I was not fast enough to the
stage. Later that year we did a family vacation to CA
and Universal Studios and Vern was there doing a
Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein make up show.
Again I was too slow to the stage. But, my Dad hung
out with me after the show and we got to talk to Vern
and as a "stupid kid" I got to ask a lot of questions
about the ape make-up and Vern could not have been
nicer and put up with my questions.

The dealer rooms were always great and Jerry's booth
always had the best stuff. I bought all my POTA
posters from him (or you) over the years.

    Those shows were great!

    Tim,

    I'll work on it.

My "real job" is with the circus and I do a little bit
of traveling at this time of the year.

As soon as I get some time at home, I will get this
    stuff out.

At the moment my wife feels POTA should not be at the
top of my list. Ha - what does she know....

Remember the poster from the Video Series (you had to
send away for it) it was like a Andy Warhol poster
with apes in different primary colors.

I don't have the poster. It must have been separated from the magazine long before I got it. According to the contents page there were also some Spider-man stamps, which are also long gone. I got the magazine as part of a lot of Ape items on eBay a few years ago.

I used a Panasonic tape recorder to record PLANET in a theatre in 1971!  I wish I still had that recording as it was a record of where the film got laughs and such.

I remember well when Wookies replaced Apes.  Who needs that Bigfoot of an
Ewok?  He can't even talk.  But you're right about the video market.  I can
still remember getting 'Enter The Dragon' for my Birthday. It cost $80 bucks!

POTA was shown regularly on broadcast TV and then on Sci-fi when cable
became popular.  Why spend a bunch of money for a movie you can tape?

      • The wookie does talk, just in a different language. I think when Star Wars came out, sci-fi changed. The emphasis was more on special effects. In pota, there was a strong story, it was almost like a play. Elaine

      Apes,

Since it's public aknowledge that the AUTHORS of PLANET meant the
Apes in the saga as being "JUST ordinary apes which learnt to walk
erect and to talk like Humans and to develop a culture of their
own" --- they weren't meant to BE 'Humanoid', as many theorists
including me and Patrick Tilton always theorized.
Actors played them, and that's why they look more "human-like".

      Now I ask you:

Is it plausible to think that, in the ALTERNATIVE DIMENSION where
the POTA universe is placed, all the APES in the world are HUMANOID
the way we see on the screen? That meaning that APES like *OURS*
(small) never developed in the first place?
That's why Cornelius and Zira were AT FIRST perceived like
SIMPLE, "PRIMITIVE" chimps wearing human clothes... 'til they
      wouldn't have spoken!

What do you think about it?

I have to disagree.  I think Sci-fi changes when
POTA came out.  It had a strong story.  And
there really hadn't been a serious Sci-fi flick

You did that! I did the exact same thing when I went to a morning
showing of Planet back in 1979 when I was stationed in Texas. But I got
children voices mixed in with the recording. Glad I got my VCR the
following year so I can watch Planet in peace.

I used a Panasonic tape recorder to record PLANET in a theatre
in 1971! I wish I still had that recording as it was a record of where
the film got laughs and such.

I disagree with everyone.  There was thoughtful Sci-fi just before PLANET.  FANTASTIC VOYAGE wasn't brilliant, but it was OK.  And there was FAHRENHEIT 451 too, not great, but certainly not dumb.

PLANET and 2001 in 1968 set a high standard in Sci-Fi film, and others in Hollywood had a hard time trying to replicate their success (think LOGAN'S RUN).

What STAR WARS did was so everyone you didn't have to try to create Sci-fi that was anything more substantial than BUCK RODGERS, just make sure the presentation has plenty of razzle-dazzle.  Even something like BLADERUNNER, which so many think is so great, is actually pretty empty when you strip it of its SFX.

What's needed in the genre is another Rod Serling.  He wasn't a great Sci-Fi writer himself, but he knew what was good by others and how to adapt it.

still remember getting 'Enter The Dragon' for my Birthday. It cost $80 bucks!

POTA was shown regularly on broadcast TV and then on Sci-fi when cable
became popular.  Why spend a bunch of money for a movie you can tape?

Without those guys the comics wouldn't be anywhere near as good.

Yes they were! In those days stars gave autographs and posed for photos for free and hot girls dressed as Orion slave girls!

I did. At a movie theatre in Witchita Falls, Texas in 1978 and the
movie was Planet of the Apes.

It's actually a funny story. There was no way to record in those days except to put your audio tape recorder next to the one speaker your TV probably had and hope no one talked while you were recording. I made it till the last 5 minutes or so of the first APES film on CBS for the first time then Mom came in and  said "You wanna wear these pants tomorrow?" I was pretty P.O'ed at the time as I recall but now I think it's funny.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's him.
It looks like him.  And it make sense
that he's be the one lighting her ciggie
since he was assigned to her on the shoot.
If anything went wrong with the makeup he's

I think that I recorded all five movies from TV back in the eighties...I'm trying to remember now what kind of a cassette recorder I used.  I taped mine from KCMO-TV (Channel 5) from Kansas City, Missouri back in mid-February 1983 from an APES Week they had at the time.

And I taped several KISS and Alice Cooper TV appearances by holding my

A friend of mine that was a huge KISS fan, taped them with a hand held cassette recorder
when they made an appearance on the show Fridays. In the background you could hear his
grandmother talking to the dog..."Sandy, stop lapping your leg. Sandy! Sandy! Stop your
            lapping". Hilarious.

Peter Criss of Kiss played at a bar in NJ back in the
late 80's called the Cherry Croft. We went to the
club and I taped the show on a little mini tape
              recorder.

I gave a copy of the tape to a friend who gave a copy
to someone else, who gave it to someone else and so on
and it is now a bootleg CD in the Kiss circles.

On the tape you can hear us talking about what we are
going to do that weekend and me complaing about one
              thing or another.

Saw the CD in a NY record store and I bought it not
knowing it was my recording. Kind of funny to hear
it. The artwork on the cover was better then the
              recording.

Voodoo is a West African religion that was transplanted to Haiti and
hoodoo is a system of primarily Central African magical belief and
              practice...FYI...=)

              Hello Elaine
I was told by a rep at Sideshow that the line isn't dead but on hold
because the Ape fans didn't show an interest. I suggested on this
group and two other Ape groups for every one to send an email to
Sideshow requesting more figures to be made. In response all I
received was how bad the Sideshow figures looked and that they cost to
              much. So sad.

No, he meant 'Hoodoo', from Lidsville. Now that would be a great
Sideshow figure. At least I fooled a couple of people. I would love
to see Sideshow produce some more figures, especially Zaius and Julius
enjoying their cigars. We're more likely to see figures from 'F Troop.

Julius would be what I want, but not with fake fur on the arms.  It would have to be plastic like the head.

They should also do a lobotomized Landon.

But what I'd really like is the SEE NO EVIL tribunal with chairs and table.  That would be cool.

Sideshow should be reminded of the 40th Anniversary in two years!

I think that what Sideshow should do is two separate dioramas. The
first one they should do is a 2 foot replica of the Statue of Liberty
when Taylor stumble across it and the second I think should be the
Alpha-Omega bomb with Taylor pushing the detonator with Zaius looking
on. Instead of concentrating on toys, they should be concentrating on
              dioramas.

I like the tribunal idea. I also like the idea of a young Caesar in a

I have multiples of all figures (had to have friends purchase extra
exclusives for me)and only gave positive responses to sideshow. I
think the line headed for trouble when they decided to make the
bearded Taylor the exclusive, and the Astronaut Taylor sans beard the
mass produced one. Not too bright.

Well, all in all, I can't see how Sideshow thinks the Ape line was a
failure. The majority of them are on second chance grabs which means
they were sold out and became avialiable due unsold stock. I think
they are just being plain butts about it. They want to cash in on
some big money fast and so they do the Star Wars and Lord of the
Rings; the same line that every other toy company is mass producing.
I won't give up my fight for the Ape line. I sned them a letter at
least once a month asking for more Ape figures.
              John

              .html
I"m a huge fanatic of 1970s tv shows and that is the only thing I
watch - I dont even get 1 channel hooked up to my TV - i just watch
old stuff. One thing I love is continually bumping into actors from
the POTA movies who of course kept working in film and television.
Many actors I've seen at least 5 times as I have watched series such
as Kolchak, Quincy, Wonder Woman, Fantasy Island, Six Million Dollar
Man, Star Trek, Land Of The Lost, etc.

I wondered if anyone else here collects appearances by other stars
              from the POTA movies

Hari Rhodes for example I just saw yesterday.

I think the "Vision Lawgiver" was a dumb idea.  Who wants to look at that all the time?

I have multiples of all figures (had to have friends purchase extra
exclusives for me)and only gave positive responses to sideshow. I
think the line headed for trouble when they decided to make the
bearded Taylor the exclusive, and the Astronaut Taylor sans beard the
mass produced one. Not too bright.

Yeah, I bought the bearded Taylor.  If You have the bearded one, then you have a Taylor that's in most of the movie.  You can just change his clothes.  Not that I do.  I have the bearded Taylor set up on one of my bookcases, holding his cigar and doing doing else but collecting dust.

I send them a letter at
least once a month asking for more Ape figures.

I think we should all start emailing them to death.  We need to remind them that 2008 is the 40th Anniversary of the original film and that they should do something special.

What's the email address, and who specifically should we try to contact?  Let's fight like apes for something in 2008!

I don't collect them.  I find most television to be dreck.  But back in the seventies I did try to see anything that had a POTA actor in it, Lou Wagner in "Chips" for example.

YOU are quoting Battle? I know I'm beating a dead horse, but you have
to admit, as a kid, that was a great movie moment.

No, I don't admit that.  It was fun back when I first saw it, but it was a pale thing next to the greatness of the original, and it hasn't stood the test of time.

But let's not get off the subject here!
