Yes, but at least they are keeping the Vampires, vampires. If you have
Omega on DVD, there's a cool little documentary explaining why they went mutant
instead of Vampire. It's one of my favorite films and always will be. I love my
Heston Triumvurate, Planet, Omega and Soylent. I'll always be a Charlton
fan.

.htmlA few years ago Dave Ballard wrote an extraordinary fan fiction about
the POTA tv series called "Values," which eventually ended up being
produced as a non-profit audio drama with art by Neil Foster. Cds were
exchanged for donations to a 9/11 charity. Now it's available at my
site in 7 parts in mp3 in files ranging in size for 2-10 plus megs, and
featuring the vocal talents of Mark Donovan, Peter Hinchman & Thomas
Himinez."
The producers suggest that if you enjoy the download you might consider
donating a couple of dollars to a local animal charity.
You'll be amazed at what a determined fan or two can bring to life -
it's like another, better episode of the tv series.

not big fans of the TV series. It is very well done.

I agree. Can't you allow yourself to have a little fun, Rory? For me, Logan's Run was the best of its time!
Sometimes I don't consider watching a bad movie, especially one as boring as LOGAN'S RUN, fun. I didn't like it when it first came out and I still don't -- though I do have it on DVD, but only as a record of a Jerry Goldsmith scored film.

I think that after seeing his overblown King Kong, I wouldn't want to see Peter Jackson do an Apes film.
Yeah, I really can't see were this notion comes from that Peter Jackson is some kind of excellent filmmaker. Other than his LOTR movies, which so many loved, but I thought were repetative and too often sappy and silly, most of Jackson's films are near-schlock.
And, I think with KING KONG he's really shot himself in the foot. Unbelievably, an even longer version of it is coming to DVD. For me, this just goes to show that what we're in now in the history of film is an era of the "Ego Auteur," filmmakers that aren't really that good, but make crap that makes so much money they believe, or allow the delusion to exist, that money equals quality. It doesn't.
We APES fans should now this well enough. Burton's POTA made $350 million world wide, but it's still garbage.
Also, look at Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS. Big money maker, a blockbuster. A great movie, right? WRONG!

Didn't J.Lee Thompson state he thought the new ending was the correct

I don't recall what Thompson said, but I that if he did say that, he was right and you understand why.

Anyway, I recently rented the original Vincent Price adaptation THE LAST MAN ON EARTH. Not a good movie, but closer to the novel. I don't know why the Heston version couldn't have left the plague victims as vampires. Once again, the Corringtons ruined a good concept. What hacks they were.
By the way, I don't think SOYLENT GREEN is that good a movie either. And that was when you really started to notice Chuck's rug too. He was a little too old for the part really. I also didn't think the book it was based on, MAKE ROOM, MAKE ROOM, was that good either. It certainly hasn't come true!

It's the simple philosophy of Hollywood....
Will Smith stars in one movie that makes money....
Hollywood execs figure, "Oh, people like seeing him in this. What can we do that's kind of the same thing?"
Will Smith stars in another movie that makes money....
Hollywood execs figure, "Wow! People really like seeing him in things like this. Let's make more!"
Will Smith makes more.
It's not until he does a Sci-Fi film that completely bombs that the trend will end. Only then will the Hollywood execs figure, "OK, that's dead with the public." Until then, they know nothing except what made money before. It's all about chasing the buck. Art has nothing to do with it. That's what happened with APES and that's why it died when it stopped making money, big money. If BATTLE had somehow grossed twice what CONQUEST had made, there probably would have been a sixth APES film.
POTA 2001 made a lot of money, but it really didn't make as much profit as Fox had hoped and this is the real reason we've not seen another new APES movie. The studio, I'm sure, simply doesn't believe that another APES film would be worth the investment. Of course, if Will Smith went to Fox and said I want to do "APES II" it probably would happen.
In fact, I can see it now... Will Smith as MacDonald in a remake of CONQUEST!

A vew years ago Dave Ballard wrote an extraordinary fan fiction about the POTA tv series called "Values," which eventually ended up being produced as a non-profit audio drama with art by Neil Foster. Cds were exchanged for donations to a 9/11 charity. Now it's available at my site in 7 parts in mp3 in files ranging in size for 2-10 plus megs, and featuring the vocal talents of Mark Donovan, Peter Hinchman & Thomas Himinez."
The producers suggest that if you enjoy the download you might consider donating a couple of dollars to a local animal charity.
You'll be amazed at what a determined fan or two can bring to life - it's like another, better episode of the tv series.

.html.html I really enjoy Goldsmith also. A few months back our community orchrestra played all of his Star Trek music. Though it wasn't the best of quality, it was nice to hear his work up close and and personal. The Conductor wanted to do POTA. However he didn't have the instruments needed to make those procussion and electric sounds. It would have been interesting to hear if the conductor had tried to such an attempt in recreating POTA music.

Yeah, Will Smith doing "I Am Legend".
I don't like Will in sci-fi, he brings baggage to it that I don't think works
(except "Men in Black", which was really a comedy). I think Ridley Scott was
going to do "I Am Legend" a few years back. That would've been cool. - - -

Come to think of it, Heston was a
smarty pants in "Omega Man" and is often credited with starting the flippant
hero trend in action movies (Ah-nuld, Bruce Willis, etc.). So if they want to do
"Omega Man" Smith might be good. But I don't know how that would go with purists
of the original book and movie. - - - Jeff

I agree, Rory. These blockbusters are really
going crazy with running times and dilute the movie. "Superman", "Pirates" are
both over 2 1/2 hours and the movies are the worse for it. Especially now with
DVD where you can put a longer movie out for people that want (a long movie is
easier to watch at home; it's a killer in a movie theater). I think it's
becoming a status symbol; "Peter Jackson's movie was that long, I'm important
too". That and the crushing schedules to get these things out on the release
date decided in advance. In that way I like that DVDs allow directors to go back
with less pressure and maybe improve (like I think Stone did with
"Alexander"). - - - Jeff

Yeah, I really can't see
were this notion comes from that Peter Jackson is some kind of excellent
filmmaker. Other than his LOTR movies, which so many loved, but I
thought were repetative and too often sappy and silly, most of Jackson's films
are near-schlock.
And, I think with KING KONG he's really shot himself
in the foot. Unbelievably, an even longer version of it is coming to
DVD. For me, this just goes to show that what we're in now in the
history of film is an era of the "Ego Auteur," filmmakers that aren't really
that good, but make crap that makes so much money they believe, or allow the
delusion to exist, that money equals quality. It doesn't.
We APES

Yeah, I have been a bit disappointed with these
Summer movies that start well enough but get
lost in themselves, with all the best scenes
ending up in the trailer. And whenever a
director gets a hit they are usually given

There are 9 cards in the set and 9 corresponding Easter Eggs have been hidden in the Group's Website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/MainPage.htm. Each Egg links to a specific card. Search the Group Website for the Eggs (some are big, some are small). When you've found all 9, click the banner on the Group's Yahoo Home Page for the entry form.
Fill in the locations of each of the cards. For example:
- Card: Lisa

I was thinking about it again today, and Caesar's final speech in the re-edited version is a bit silly. Who is he supposed to be talking to other than the apes in front of him? But, are they supposed to understand all his words and what they mean? Aren't they supposed to be kind of dumb?
As I said, it should have been re-shot -- and rescripted -- properly.

AOL has Burton's Apes as one of the Worst Twist Endings
Of All Time. What gets me is they didn't list the original
ending as one of the Best! That's the Worst Snub since
The Emmy's failed to nominate Hugh Laurie's performance
As Dr. Greg House M.D. while at the same time nominating
House -- the very series with him in the title role. That
can
mean only one thing. They want to give an Emmy to that
hack Martin Sheen, who isn't fit to shine Laurie's shoes.

I agree! An awesome actor in an awesome show.
I've long been a Hugh Laurie fan. "Jeeves and Wooster" is classic.
The first two seasons of "A Bit of Fry & Laurie" hit DVD in the U.S.
next month.

He's the only actor to fool me without makeup.
Joel Grey fooled me, but he was made up as a Korean.
Hugh Laurie did with just some beard stubble and a trick
with his voice. Now that's acting! Though I didn't know
at
the time he was in House. I knew Grey was in Remo Williams
and didn't know I'd been looking at him during the entire movie
until the closing credits. Looking back I can't believe I
missed
him. On the other hand I can't believe I watched two episodes
of HOUSE and did know it was Hugh Laurie until his name was
mentioned on a Entertainment Magazine show -- especially after
all the years I'd enjoyed his work in Black Adder, making his first
appearance as a Master Of Disguise. Who knew he really was one?

Me either.
If I had to choose one, I guess it'd be Bryan Singer.
I'm not a big fan of X Men, and I though the new Superman
ran out of steam towards the end. But he did do The Usual
Suspects as well as Producer for HOUSE MD. Though it's
creator David Shore who directs it. Maybe he'd be better.

You know, I can't now recall when I first found out it was a re-edited ending. It sure worked when I first saw the movie. I remember that when Roddy McDowall said, "Tonight... we have seen... the birth... of the planet of the apes!" the hair on the back of my neck stood up. It was great.
The original ending would have been disturbing, but it wouldn't have had that affect, I'll bet.

Yeah, it was obvious. No one does a Sergio
(extreme close up showing only the eyes)
while someone is still talking. It's just not done.
You could tell it was a last ditch because an
over dub had to be done. It wasn't until recently,
on this group, I found out about the original ending.

Not me. I think the original ending, though possibly "one note"
is more faithful to the original pessimistic endings of the previous
films.

out there? How about Ray Bradbury?
He could write the story but we still lack a director...
Does "Greenlight Productions" still exist? You know, that site
produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon...?
They allow a million dollar budget, but if there's enough backup
maybe there's something...
Anything goes in Hollywood...
How 'bout a collaboration on a 'blogsite?
Everybody throw their ideas out there and we ALL puzzle it
together....?
Just keep really good notes though.
No stealing...
There's got to be some really great ideas looming, don't you
think?
I mean, so far everyone has cast a thumbs down on these so-
called "Great" directors when all they are doing is following (pardon
the repetition) direction. <.html

You'd probably have better lock with Kevin Spacey's Trigger Street

At least it's made a couple of movies, instead of a bunch of direct to

.htmlMarvel UK issue 93 is now available to download from Hunter's site. This week the folks at Marvel UK decided to finally give the UK fans what they had been begging for all along - more Apes in their weekly PotA comic. How did they do this? They started reprinting the original film adaptation, but in smaller chunks than the first time around. For the sake of completeness I'm including these pages in the PDFs. There are going to be some new splash pages as we go along, so there is some new content.
Also available now on Hunter's site is a first draft script of The Legacy episode from the TV series. At this point in the development of the episode it was titled Second Family. Thanks to Mark Rogers for his help in acquiring this script. Those of you who are still waiting on your copies of Simian Scrolls are in for a treat with Mark's excellent article on the early synopses of the TV episodes that were sent out
to writers with the series bible. Greg <.html

I only wish that they'd had a better artist do the Planet of the Apes
adaptation. George Tuska was totally wrong. The Artist for Beneath (Alfredo
Alacala inked it, I beleive) did a much better job.

OK, I just checked it out now. It doesn't look like fingerprints, but scratches.
First off, there's other stuff, all of it minor but annoying. There's a hair or strand of dust fiber that appears during the main credits above the "Makeup by... Hairstyling... Orchestration" credits at 4 min., 15 sec. It's always been there, probably in the original negs, but I wish they'd digitally remove it.
There's also a lot of flicker in the transfer, the worse one being during the trial when Zira says "He's unlike any man you have ever seen." (1 Hour, 6 min. and 8 sec.) Watch the image flicker.
As for the scratches, the first one (and there may be more but I haven't checked every frame) is at 26 min. and 16 sec., just after Taylor runs between the two trees. If you still step through that shot you'll see the scratches. The second set of them appears at 43 min. and 54 sec. when Zira pinches Cornelius' nose. I don't know why those scratches are there, but it would be nice if those film elements could be cleaned up.
Anyway, Fox still needs to do more work on PLANET. I remember that an actual film restoration of the movie was being done to get an archival print and that a work print of it was shown at the Eastman House in Rochester, NY. Hopefully when they do a Blu-ray DVD of PLANET a better print will be used.
