thought Conquest took place in San Diego. It was his initial impression
from when he first saw the film. Also, he had not seen the Extended
version of Battle at the time.
I for one can't fault him for this, there is nothing in Conquest to
indicate where it takes place. It could be anywhere in the US. It is
only when viewing Conquest in relation to Battle (particularly the
Extended version) that it become apparent that both films take place in
on the East Coast.

Hi Hunter, when did you talk to Frank
Darabont? Yeah, he was one of the studio's choices to direct it but I guess
Burton's name was bigger. Did he tell you any tidbits
about Broyles' script that were changed when the two rewriters came
aboard? Darabont's also an Ape fan, with a Mego collection. - - -

Frank Darabont (who directed THE SHAWSHANK
REDEMPTION and THE GREEN MILE) told me that he tried to tell the studio
their script was awful and what was wrong with it, but they weren't
interested-- -they only wanted to meet the release date they'd
set.

Hi, Jeff. I last corresponded with Frank back in November 2005. (He
has written a script based on Robert McCammon's novel MINE; I run the
McCammon web site, and have corresponded with Frank periodically about
his script.)
> Yeah, he was one

Frank told me they offered it to him, but the script was so bad, he
turned it down immediately. It was then that he tried to tell them
why, but they weren't interested. A week later, they hired Burton for
the job.

No, he didn't. He said the script he read was pretty much what Burton
shot.

I think
that is what most fans want. Something that captures the spirit of the

If I were going to do a sequel it would take place between Battle and
Planet. There's 2000 years to mess around with! How about Planet of the Apes:
Fall of the Humans? Showing how they lost their power of speech and became
animals. Perhaps the best Marvel story was Evolutions Nightmare, which would
make a good film in itself.

The best thing about it was the soundtrack, which I have.
The only movie of his I'd consider owning is Ed Wood,
though I'd rather have the soundtrack of that too.
Maybe it's because it's in B&W or because it's
deliberately cheap, but it has an indie feel to it.

If I were going to do a sequel it would take place between Battle and Planet. There's 2000 years to mess around with! How about Planet of the Apes: Fall of the Humans? Showing how they lost their power of speech and became animals. Perhaps the best Marvel story was Evolutions Nightmare, which would make a good film in itself.

Didn't George Lucas start the "pre-quel",ie, "retcon" ?
It began this backward spiral into "where did we come from in all
catagories", right?
Where DID our "Apes" come from?
In all, if we look at the 2001 abrupter, we could say it started
there and descended to the '68 period of the "Apes" considering how
primitive they lived in the "'01" description,ie; primitive and not
yet used to a talking culture of homosapien...
A missing link as in our human genus...
Fill in the blanks..
Boulle started this.
It's up to us to fill it in?
Create your own conclusion as to how they came to be...
Perhaps we dropped the ball somewhere far beyond our lifetime
and they now hold court...
Guess what, dude - it's stormin' like hell where I am and I have

TV series Frasier. Much of what had been estabished about him had to be
fleshed out retroactively and bit & pieces needed to be revised.
One big continuity error was that in several episodes of Cheers Frasier
said his father was dead. The producers took the stand that only what
is seen by the audience counts and anything merely spoken by a
character was heresay. The error was later explained that Frasier and
his dad had a fight and weren't speaking at the time so Frasier
considered his father "dead to me".

by the audience counts and anything merely spoken by a character was
heresay.
That would be a big OUT for the Mad Max series.
At the end of The Road Warrior the narrator said
their new leader was the Gyro Captain. But in
Thunderdome Bruce Spence is out in the middle
of the Wasteland with no one but his son. MMIII
was the POTA 2001 of the series. But instead
of Mark Wahlberg they got Tina Turner -- Not
sure who got the worst deal there. At least
Kistofferson can act, sort of. Never cared for
MCD. Green Mile was okay, but since then
all his performances have seemed very forced.

Except that isn't the Gyro Captain in Thunderdome. It's Bruce Spence as an

Well, the picture I saw on that site showed a shot that was taken in Hempstead, Long Island. That's where I lived in the '60s. Though I first saw PLANET in Wantagh and later Levittown and Lynbrook, in 1969 I saw it twice at the Calderone Theatre in downtown Hempstead. (I walked to the theatre all by myself -- at the age of nine! Can you imagine anyone these days letting a nine-year-old do that?)
I moved to upstate New York in June 1970 just after BENEATH came out, so I know nothing of the POTA scene on L.I. in the seventies.
One thing though is that I thought the Mego figures SUCKED! I grew up with 12" G.I. Joes and Marx action figures. That's the kind of APES stuff I would have wanted.

was done after the movies were over. My guess is the reasons were
twofold, FOX thought the TV series would be a big hit & wanted to
capitalize on it and they didn't want to make the effort until the
owned the property 100% (why share the profits with Jacobs or anyone
else).
Of course for me the summer of 1974 was truely the summer of Apes.
While in previous years the POTA films would come out in May/June and
then make it to my local theaters sometime in July, by August there was
really no new Apes to look forward to until the next year. Yet in '74
we had the GO APE! festival in July. In August I discovered the first
issue of Marvel's magazine and of course I was eagerly awaiting the TV
series in the fall.

.htmlI've often wondered why FOX never used the original poster art in any of the video releases through the years. While the covers on the last two DVD issues arre far better than the crappy VHS covers done in the '80s, they are still very generic.

However, I don't think that this is something particular to POTA. FOX seems to have some poor artists in their marketing department. In fact the covers from the Evolution box set, often remind me of the covers for the last issue of the original Star Wars films.

Both would be better using the film's original One Sheets than these graphics.
What's worse for the Evolution box set is that the main Ape images are innapropriate for each film.
- Beneath should not have Roddy but either Ursus or Zaius.
- Zira is fine for Escape.
- Conquest should have Roddy not some generic gorilla.
- Battle should have either Aldo or a mutant. Either is better than Virgil.
One thing that is lucky for POTA fans (or at least those who are members of this group) is that DVD based on the original graphics are available on the group's website:

Just go to the Downloads page in the Art & Info section to download and print out. http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/Downloads.htm

There's never been a cover for anything APES on home video -- in this country anyway -- that I've liked, not on videocassette, CED video disc, Laserdisc, or now DVD. I've always believed that the problem is that those working for Fox over the past 30 years just don't know apes! Look at how many times images from BENEATH have been used for PLANET? Of course part of the problem is that the entire film series is looked at as just one entity.
Fox has done great covers for other of their movies, but when it comes to APES it's as if they're cursed.

No, I don't think those were the reasons. First, back in '68 I'm sure Fox didn't consider POTA as a kids-orientated entity. POTA was aimed at adults too. Also, there was the debacle of DR. DOLITTLE and that huge merchandising campaign that bombed. The memory of that fiasco lasted for years at the studio. It should also be remembered that the studio management that made the first two APES films was gone by the time of the last APES films. The Zanucks lost the studio. The last three APES films were really low-budget "B" movies. Fox was a studio that was really hard up for money in the early seventies. It was damn near broke. It was the huge audiences the first three APES films had on CBS in the fall of 1973 that woke Fox up to the idea that maybe there was more to be milked from the ape tit. Nothing starts the greed machine rolling like a 60 share! But, by 1974, Fox aimed APES
squarely at kids. This was unfortunate and what really killed the "franchise." It's an outlook the concept hasn't been able to escape since.

They seem to be getting better. The recent covers for the special editions of POSEIDON ADVENTURE, PATTON and THE LONGEST DAY have been great.
The problem is that Fox doesn't actually do these things themselves. It's farmed out to companies that specialize in producing this stuff.

Maybe the French or Japanese posters... But if I had my way... I like
the new artwork for The Shawshank Redemption and the soon to be
released Green Mile dvd's. I wish Fox would have commisioned the
artist to do Apes posters.

It's dated 7/3/74 but includes revision pages dated 7/11/74, 7/15/74 and 7/22/74. Special bonus for Pete Burke fans, nearly all the references to his original character name (Ed Rowak) had been updated by this version of the script. Thanks to John Roche for providing this script for the archive. Also thanks to John we've added a scan of an article from Famous Monsters #85, covering Escape From the Planet of the Apes. Greg <.html

Because even then they didn't take the films seriously. I think they
deliberately chose the mask photo to make light of it all (along with
"Go Ape!" as a slogan).

| Subject: TV Series for kids? |
|
.html I don't agree that the TV Series was a kiddie show--it's content and
approach was adult and mature throughout.Taking the episodes in turn:
1.Starts with the death of Jones, the shooting of Farrow and the
accidental killing by Galen of a gorilla intent on murdering Virdon
and Burke.State suppression and repression are key topics.
2.Humans habtually fight to the death in an arena for sport, with
Tolar and Jason shooting each other.Pacifism in the face of violence
is the theme.
3.Despite Urko's attempts to murder Burke, the delicate handling of
the race issue leaves us sympathetic with the Apes.
4.Race and bigotry are examined and satirised intelligently.
5.Virdon is tortured and imprisoned with two brutalised companions,
one of them a young child.Urko casually speaks of wiping out families
in reprisal and of killing Vidon as he is of no more use.
6.Old humans are tied to rafts and pushed out to sea to satsfy gods
who oversee a human slave culture.
7.Virdon is near fatally shot, and then treated at a hospital where
child abuse and domestic violence are the norm.
8.An Ape is imlpicated in his brother's murder, whilst Klan like
thugs muredr one human by burning his home and dragging him along on
a rope.
9.Urko is prepared to murder to win a bet, and a boy is locked in a
cage to prepare for public execution.
10.Burke is beaten, tortured and then prepared for a lobotomy--we are
shown a diagram just in case we don't know what it is.
11.A tyrant gorilla murders a human in reprisal for a theft and only
just fails to kill another--he is likewise thwarted in trying to blow
up Urko.
12.Urko wants to burn a village full of humans and will be allowed to
do so if a plague cure isn't found.
13.Humans capture other humans to hand over as slaves, knowing they
will die. They ritually kill their own whilst their leader plans
genocide.
14.Leuric is beaten and bleeding whilst imprisoned, and Carsia plans
a massive act of terrorism by bombing her government.
There are at least 10 violent deaths in 14 episodes, not counting a
plague, and several other murders and mass murders are avoided.
The show was not a kiddie show.It dealt with race hatred, torture,
terrorism, child abuse, government repression and pacifism in an
intelligent and entertaining manner.
I don't agree that the show killed the franchise--Mego sold bucket
loads in 1975 and the Marvel magazine lasted until 1977.There was
even the animated series in between.Bad decisions at CBS ended a
promising show far too soon. For some fans, the TV Series helped
establish the franchise, at a time when the movies were arguably
running out of steam. The TV show deserves respect.JOHN, SCROLLS. <.html

It sure as hell wasn't. You don't show kids bare-assed scenes,

It was anything but a kiddy matinee. It may have been
the 60s, but it was the 60's. MASH got a X Rating back
then. And only by getting back to the more adult themes
does POTA have any hope for the future. An updating is
the only thing that can save the franchise. Audiences
are jaded, and not as easily shocked these days as
they were in the past. The more sophisticated the
audience the more adult it must be to compete
for dwindling turnouts. R - Rated POTA is
the only hope. NC-17 would be even better.

would be like the kiss of death for this proud series. If Fox was smart
they should follow what Universal did with Battlestar Galactica and
what Warner Bros did when they revived the "Batman" franchise when they
did "Batman Begins" and the new "Superman Returns" movie. Studios in
Hollywood want to make money, and that means pushing movie based toy
related items to kids, like the new Superman movie and the Batman
franchise . Audiences want to be entertained, and trying to shock them
isn't going to do it. The Star Trek television series back in the mid
60's only lasted about three years, but after countless re-runs, an
animated tv series, 9 movies, four television series and news of
another Star Trek movie on the horizon. I would like to hope that
people in at Fox could see what the other studios have done with
StarTrek, Superman, TMNT, BattleStar Galactica, and Batman they can do
the same with POTA. Just only make the apes more mature, but not to the
point that you alienate your core fan base.

Oh GOD no. That's what ruined the Star Wars series.
You don't have to turn POTA into another comic book
movie to entertain people. That's NOT what the original
was. It was Sci-fi bordering on a horror movie. It was a
Twilight Zone, and it was genius to hire Serling to work
on it. Maybe recreating the magic of it is impossible.

turning POTA into another comic book movie, I was saying that maybe if
Fox did what Universal did with Battlestar Galactica when they did a
total remake of the television series and made it more mature and a lot
more serious instead of the 1979 series. Fox can do the same thing with
the Apes . That is what I'm suggesting that Fox do.

When it comes to the TV series there is a real cultural divide. In the
UK it was a very big hit so people there see it as a big part of the
