Received my disc today, I am ecstatic! Now that I have a video copy
of the Galen footage I can now have a "true" marathon. And I finally
was able to see the 30th Anniversary AMC bumpers that I missed
because my psychotic ex-girlfriend demanded we go out of town that
holiday weekend...instead of watching apes... Go figure....

Thank you for your kind and generous offer.

Loved the Old Galen bumps.  Interesting that they
did the hair pieces for the hands, something Galen
never had, but no makeup on the hands.  A stark
contrast to the color of the mask they used.  I
guess some compromise had to be struck,
though without using the appliances the
mouth didn't have nearly the articulation.

It was great seeing Kim on the Kazan episode of American Master on
PBS tonight.  I love it when she pops up in documentaries.  It's just
like have her back among the living again.  And though she looks
great in blue, she should have changed it up a bit.  It's almost
like she shot all of them on the same day.  I do that too.
Now I realize I need to vary it up a little bit more.  If
only so people know it's a clean set of clothes.

Damn, I forgot all about watching that because I watch DEADWOOD the ENTOURAGE on HBO.

I wonder if they'll repeat it?  Was it any good?

Anyway, James Gregory was in a first season episode.

I've also read that Nimoy's original Spock ear appliances were designed by John Chambers.

I know that the appliance makeup work done throughout the modern Star Trek stuff was part of the Chambers "legacy," since he either trained or inspired those makeup artists.

Subject: OT: POTA not the "Ultimate" con job
.html
.html
In the past I've kinda become the person to cry "foul" at companies soaking fans on DVD. When the POTA "Ultimate" collection was announced I was pissed that it looked like Fox would use the cartoons as a carrot to "force" fans to rebuy all the DVDs. Well, Fox turned out to be pretty fair. They held off releasing the cartoons separately to give purchasers of the "Ultimate" collection some time to have their day in the sun, but WILL be releasing them separately in September for those who have been loyal DVD fans but didn't want to buy the collection.
But now Fox is on the hot seat again. As I brought up a while back, Fox plans to release an "Ultimate" collection for the TV show "M*A*S*H". When the series ends this year the loyal fans will have bought 11 seasons on DVD. But this "Ultimate" collection will include 2 bonus discs of extras presumably not available to fans who don't rebuy the entire series. (See http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=6323  ).
The show "Alias" ends it's DVD run in November with a collection of the entire series in a "Rambaldi" prop replica with, yes, a bonus disc not available to fans who purchased previous seasons and don't want to rebuy the whole 5 seasons. ("Alias" is the only hour show I've been collecting so that personally pisses me off).
"Star Wars" fans are up in arms, too. In the fall DVDs will be released of the original versions of the films, something that has long been lobbied for. But their presentation is said to be subpar and they are being released as "extras" on yet another release of the new, (improved?) special editions of the films. Lucasfilm says they are releasing these as single discs for those who didn't want to buy the box set of the movies a couple years back. But let's face it, the people who would want the original versions are the same loyal fans who probably already purchased the box sets. Who are they trying to kid.
In short, the POTA "Ultimate" collection is not the rip off it could've been. Maybe it would be worth it to fans if Fox made the original version of "Conquest", lost scenes from "Planet" and "Escape" and other goodies from the vault only available in the "Ultimate" collection. But still, it's a trend I don't like. Do these studios think they're oil companies or something? Enough with slapping loyal fans in the face. I've written tvshowsondvd.com and asked them to do a commentary on this.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe "M*A*S*H" and "Alias" fans will be able to send away for the bonus discs if they don't want to rebuy everything (Universal did this when there was a bonus disc on a recent "Jurassic Park" set). We'll see. I'm keeping an eye on you, studios.  - - - Jeff

.html

I'm surprized people didn't get more of these, particularly Ricardo Montalban. For simplicity I'll break this down by film since there are a lot of them.

PLANET OF THE APES

  • John Chambers designed Mr. Spock's ears
  • Jerry Goldsmith wrote the score to 5 Star Trek movies and the themes for Next Generation & Voyager
  • James Daly appeared in an original series episode
  • Felix Silla was in the Star Trek pilot

BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES

  • Leonard Roseman scored Star Trek IV
  • Gregory Sierra was in an episode of DS9
  • Jeff Corey guest starred on the original series
  • As did James Gregory

ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES

  • Janos Prohaska appeared in several original series episodes
  • William Windom guest starred on the original series
  • So did Jason Evers
  • And Ricardo Montalban who also appeared in Star Trek II

BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

  • France Nuyen guest starred on the original series
  • Paul Williams appeared in an episode of Voyager

THE TV SERIES

  • Mark Lenard appeared in several Trek series and movies
  • John Hoyt was in the Star Trek pilot
  • Booth Colman guest starred on Voyager
  • Jay Robinson, Morgan Woodward & Percy Rodriguez all appeared in episodes of the original series
  • Jerry Finnerman was cinematographer on the original series

PLANET OF THE APES (2001)

  • David Warner appeared in two Star Trek movies and episodes of the Next Generation
  • Michael Wiseman was in episodes of Voyager
  • Anne Ramsey was in episodes of Next Generation

There are also some indirect links:

  • Lou Wagner was in the TV series CHIPS as was Michael Dorn (Worf)
  • Roddy was in the film 'The Alien Within' with Melanie Shatner (Bill's Daughter)
  • Conquest's production designer Phillip Jefferies was the brother of Matt Jefferies who designed the original Enterprise
  • Frank Capra, Jr.'s son, Frank Capra III, was an assistant director on Star Trek IV

I think you're WRONG.....

Wrong not to look at it from the Home Video companies' perspective.  They are part of corporations, companies that are in business , that employ people and provide livings for those people. In short, they exist to make money.  In order to make that money they have to sell their product to consumers.  What is their product?  Their library of films.  Is that commodity unlimited?  NO!  It's finite.  They only have so many movies.  So, how do they keep making money off that finite resource?  By figuring out new ways to keep selling the same thing.  (Has that ever NOT been the case scine the days of the nickelodeons?)  What would you have them do instead?  Sell the ultimate DVD edition of every movie they have, that no buyer will ever need to replace with an improved transfer or further desire anything more on, then just hang it up?  Dude, we live in a capitalist society, one that demands continuing profits.  No more profits -- no more company!  Like it or not, that's the reality -- AND YOU BETTER GET HOLD OF THAT AND HANG ON TO IT, OR YOU MIGHT AS WELL BE DEAD!  Besides, I think the purchasing of DVDs falls under the category of a "nonessential purchase," you know, like a luxury item or something.  They aren't food or toilet paper -- you don't HAVE to have them.  No one is holding a gun to your head making you buy them!  So, butch up and stop complaining!

Yes, it is.

I also forgot to mention that I've read someplace (or maybe Goldsmith says in in the commentary for ST: TMP) that Jerry Goldsmith was originally going to do the music for the "Star Trek" pilot back in 1965, but had a scheduling problem.  If he had done it, the theme music to ST: TOS would have been Goldsmith.

No one else seemed to like it much, but I liked VOYAGER a lot and still rent DVDs of that show.  Goldsmith's theme is great.

Oh, and by the way, I just rented, but haven't watched yet, an episode of ST: DS9 that has Lou Wagner in it playing a Ferengi.  It's a first season episode called "The Nagus."

They're dead. The best Cornelius could have ended up as was a vegetable, since he must have shattered his spine and broke both legs and likely fractured his skull after being shot and falling. Zira took a few throught the lungs, so I doubt either of them would have survived. I'm just wondering what the government would have done with the bodies.

Well, I would think that if an alien landed on earth (remember they were considered "visitors from space") that the bodies would be autopsied and then preserved. The autopsies would confirm that the apeonauts were born of the earth and perhaps -- years later -- their DNA would be used by APE MANAGEMENT to breed a smarter more domesticated servant ape -- and we all know the results from that.

But, what if one or both survived? Maybe Stevie and Dr Dixon were put in charge of the survivors and they lived to see Caesar's conquest?

Just as they used to release a movie, then do a reissue years later, then a double feature.  And back in those days you didn't get to take the movie home and watch it over and over.  And the buying of DVDs isn't like the buying of food.  You spend much more on food every week than you do on DVDs.  You can watch the DVDs again and again, but try eating the same food again and again.  It would get rather disgusting.

Oh, I doubt it.  It probably would have been very much like his "Twilight Zone" stuff.

By the way, Goldsmith was pissed that they took his main title theme from ST: TMP and used it as the theme for TNG.  That's why when you watch VOYAGER each episode starts with a "Main Theme" credit for Goldsmith.

I don't think that the corpses were burned because that maybe
one of the reasons that the plague that killed the dogs and cats got
started. I think the scientific part of the government would have done
many experiments including some sort of gene splicing and maybe some
cloning experiments. i do agree with you about the DNA being obtained
by a company but it has to be a front company with ties to the
government.

I think more likely, since its obvious neither ape survived, nor did anyone rush to give them first aid if one had survived, that the two doctors either had a gag order placed on them or had a government sponsored 'accident'.

But perhaps the use of their DNA would explain why Breck was so paranoid even before Cesar appeared.

Yeah, it IS a business. So why piss off your loyal customers? That's something these "corporations" haven't figured out. That's why they have to keep having massive layoffs. I don't mind a double dip movie once in a while, especially if the extras are worth it. A double dip TV show is something else, or double dip franchise like 'Star Bores" or "Planet of the Drapes" (a sci-fi version of "Queer Eye for the Ape Guy"). No. There's too much greed and corruption these days under the guise of "just doing business". And no more complaints about POTA2001, Rory. They cast Marky Mark and hired Tim Burton because they thought it would bring the best return on their investment and protect their precious employees.  - - - Jeff

.html.htmlI wasn't aware of it until this morning but TV LAND has been running a "DANIEL BOONE" marathon all weekend.  You'll remember this was a Fox TV series.

Sorry for the late heads up, but Maurice Evans will be on an episode at 7 PM eastern.  Entitled "Beaumarchais" I see from IMDB.com that it first aired on October 12, 1967, which means this episode was filmed either while Evans was playing Dr. Zaius in PLANET or just after he finished.  Anyway, I can't wait to check it out.

I just got through watching an episode that had Victor Buono in it, and had a scene shot at the Malibu Creek rock pool.  They even had the waterfall turned on!

All the exteriors for BOONE were done out at the Fox ranch, you know.  I also saw the "meadow," but with no cornfield planted.

So for any of you that have TV LAND, check it out quick!

Speaking of which, that is a change I wish could be made in a

always bugged me that "drive him back into his jungle lair" was
edited from the intro. The Sacred Scrolls are sacred, not to be
tampered with.

Is that because of Seven of Nine?

I thought VOYAGER wss incredibly bad, but then, I only saw the first
season before I gave up on it. I did see the occasional episode after
that, and I never saw anything to convince me that it wasn't horrible.

On the contrary,  I thought that like the Doctor's hologram, and any other character who's actor feels slighted in the emotive department seems to complain until they get these roles, straight out of the Actors Studio, which allow them  to feel human emotion, or some approximation there of.  That way they don't feel left out for the season playing an android, even if that's exactly who they're supposed to be.  The only exceptions have been Lol and Hugh, who actually gave very moving performances.  The rest was all..."Okay, for the first half-hour I'll be a tree, stuff."  They do it to keep them from walking, or asking for more money.

That was one of my biggest problems with VOYAGER: the characters and
the actors. I despise Kate Mulgrew (always have), Tim Russ as Tuvok
always seemed like a black man trying to act like Leonard Nimoy (to
me), the Neelix and Kes characters were grating, and on and on. I did
like Robert Picardo's holographic doctor.

But I do think that if a new group forms to develop the con, it'll be
more fan oriented....Which is the idea! That'll keep it fun and

I agree. But a pota con can still happen with the surviving
castmembers and any participating cast members from Tim burton's
version. So it can still be enjoyable. There are enough fans to make
it that way.

Think Data with the emotion chip or T'Pol addicted to Trellium-D.
I never like these episodes.  They sucked.  Luckily they never
did Mutants i in the POTA series.  If it had been a hit eventually
they would have and equally as inevitable would have been an
episode where they got a virus that mad them more human.

Not saying she was a whiner.  I don't have any
inside info.  But actors do like a stretch.  I can't
imagine any of them wanting to take roles that
are limiting except as a career springboard.
They have to weigh the risk of being type cast
against a steady paycheck and Trek Immortality.

I should have been a little clearer---he never really seemed like a
Vulcan to me, just somebody trying to be one. Some actors did it
well, some didn't. His acting never convinced me.

Yes, that was evident from the very beginning.

It just seemed to me like all of them had to have an excuse
to emote.  Sarak going senile for example.  It's almost as
if the whole Vulcan "Logic" thing was all a front, like a
phoney accent they can't keep up.  Any little thing
like being half human or a bad Mind-Meld could
set them off.  Perhaps that was the point -- to
say they're just like us and that all these
uncontrollable emotions are just below
the surface.  But then ever place is
just like that.  Where are the REAL
Vulcans who have it under control?

Just before ST-V debuted, there was an overview in TV Guide about the cast members and Kes was originally supposed to be the child-mate to a female character. Apparently the Roddenberry world wouldnt stand the controversy of such characters as so we get Neelix instead.  I would probably expect to see something like that on Farscape or Andromeda.

I would say it was San Francisco due to the BART Station. BART connects
San Francisco with Oakland. So if it is not Oakland it would have to me
SF.

That's interesting--it helps me give the whole series a geographical

it looks like our trio went to San Francisco---wouldn't it have been

In science fiction, to my mind anyway, the three biggies have always
been Apes, Star Trek and Star Wars.I would suggest that of the three,
Star Wars is the weakest, really only being one film of any note, with
five cash ins of steadly more diluted crap.Star Trek is weightier, but
excrutiatingly formulaic and, again, the later incarnations are pale
shadows of what went before.I honestly feel that Apes is better
written, better directed, better acted, both in its film and television
guises, and id a far,far superior franchise to the other eye candy,
glossy franchises.I think the quality of Apes will endure longer than
the others because, quite simply, it is the best.By a mile.John,
