I think a good case can be made that many of the functions aboard Taylor's ship were automated. You can even see the computer program tape running behind Taylor in the opening scene.

Of course, even with automation more there would still have to be some knowledge of how to operate the ship. NASA ships at the time had a flight manual and checklists aboard. Suppose Dr. Milo found and studied these materials when he salvaged Taylor's ship.

Some time ago I laid out a chronology of the events during Planet & Beneath, including BTS events that would be later revealed in Escape, that addresses these issues. (Events that were seen on film are in normal type. Places where I've guessed at the time period and events that are total supposition by me are Bolded.)

• November 25: Taylor and crew crash land in the Forbidden Zone.
• November 29: Taylor and crew reach the greenbelt. Taylor is captured in the hunt. (A bit of conjecture here based on Taylor's comment that they only have 3 days of food & water. Since none of the Astronauts are showing no signs of dehydration it could not have been far beyond the 3 days.)
• December 20: Taylor first communicates with Cornelius and Zira. Later that day Taylor escapes and speaks for the first time. (Again some conjecture based on the time it would reasonably take for Taylor's wound to heal and for Dodge to be stuffed and mounted in the Ape Museum.) That night Cornelius meets with Dr. Milo and tells him Taylor's tale.
• December 27: Dr. Milo sets out alone to the Forbidden Zone to find proof of Taylor's story.
• December 30: Dr. Milo arrives at Dead Lake and finds the rubber life raft and American flag.
• January 4: After days of searching Dr. Milo find Taylor's ship during a period of low tide lodged on a sand bar and retrieves the flight manual and checklists for study. He begins the journey back to Ape City for equipment to salvage the ship.
• January 6: Taylor's trial is convened. Cornelius & Zira are indicted for heresy. (Date is based on Taylor's statement to C&Z that he hadn't seen them for weeks.)
• January 7: Cornelius & Zira break out Taylor & Nova. The group heads to the Forbidden Zone. Milo returns from to Ape City later that day and learns of recent events. He carefully begins to gather the equipment and horses needed to salvage Taylor's ship. Zaius with a squad of Gorillas heads to the Forbidden Zone to find the fugitives. Ursus sends Scouts into the Zone to find the fugitives or any sign of a human colony that Taylor may have come from.
• January 9: Dodging Gorilla patrols, Dr. Milo heads back to Dead Lake with 12 horses and a wagon full of equipment. The first of Ursus' Gorilla scouts goes missing in the Zone.
• January 10: Taylor & group reach Cornelius' dig site. They are soon joined by Zaius and Gorillas. Taylor rides deeper into the Forbidden Zone and discovers the statue.
• January 12: Milo returns to the site of Taylor's ship. Waits for low tide the next day to begin his salvage attempt. During return trip to Ape City Zaius strikes a deal with Cornelius & Zira. They agree to silence about Taylor & their discoveries in return for clemency.
• January 13: After several attempts, Milo's 12 horses pull Taylor's ship off the sand bar and on to shore. Using the information in the Flight Manual and checklists, he is able to revive the ship's systems. Taylor & Nova find an oasis in the desert. Taylor tries to teach Nova his name. More Gorilla Scouts go missing. Zaius, Cornelius & Zira return to Ape City.
• January 15: Taylor disappears in the Forbidden Zone. Milo accesses the ship's main computer and learns more of how it is operated. Zaius gives C&Z access to secret scrolls to show them the true evil of man.
• January 16: One of Ursus' Scout returns from the Forbidden Zone. Evidently tortured, Ursus uses the incident to declare martial law.
• January 17: Brent's ship crashes in the Forbidden Zone. Zira discovers that she is pregnant. (Based on Zira's comments in Beneath & Escape.) Milo completely reactivates Taylor's ship.
• January 18: Brent encounters Nova, she takes him to Ape City. (Taylor askes the Gorillas for a week's supply of food and water. Thus, it is doubtful that Nova was wandering around the Forbidden Zone for long.) Milo journeys back to Ape City for supplies.
• January 19: Brent and Nova escape Ape City with Zira's help and discover Subway Station.
• January 20: Ursus, Zaius and Gorilla Army leave Ape City at sunrise to march on Forbidden Zone. Later that morning Milo returns to tell C&Z about Taylor's ship. The 3 gather supplies and leave Ape City for the ship.
• January 21: Brent & Nova are captured & interrogated by the mutants. Gorilla army reaches Forbidden Zone. (Based on Brent's comment that they had been in Ape City 2 days earlier.)
• January 22: Final Midnight mass is celebrated at St. Patrick's. Taylor, Brent & Nova are reunited. At dawn, Zaius discovers underground passage. Gorilla Army starts to march on Mutant City. Milo, Cornelius & Zira arrive at site of Taylor's ship and begin pre-launch checklist.

Subject: [POTA] winston test

The other day I saw the book "The Winston Effect", is a double page
dedicated to the test of The Planet of the Apes.
The photos are very detailed and in some pics the animatronic
mechanisms for the movement of the mouth are clearly seen.
I always thought that the test was prosthetic make up, But I was wrong.
The aspect is very good, but I do not know how it was in movement, I
suppose that very good.
Unfortunately I could not buy the book.

Well... I see Tim Burton's rendition of POTA as
just a different re-telling of the POTA tale. It
is neither a prequel or sequel, and doesn't follow
the storyline of the other films. The NEW POTA is
just a rehashing of the story under a differnt vision,
and stands on it's own- not even being a branch on the
same tree as the original format of the OLD POTA.

And I might add that the TB POTA (Tim Burton's POTA)
lacks much for nitpickers to chew on, except for two
very big glaring points, that cannot be ignored. The
first and not-so-obvios to many at first, is... where
in the devil did the horses come from??? That's some-
thing of a big question. There were DNA samples aboard,
and they were developed in artificial wombs or something?
Erf. Makes no sense considering that space station's
mission. The animal apes as experimental animals made
total sense. And #2, the big one, is that damned freaky
'surprise ending'. I've seen professional nit-pickers
struggle like hell to figure that one out, and it's such
a difficult problem relative to the plot... that it does
not leave open much the chance of a sequel that will
make sense... UNLESS... something just as weird and
baffling is slipped in to justify the sequel. Damn Tim
Burton anyway. Instead of coming up with something so
'surprising[- and baffling, I would have preferred that
he came up with something that actually made sense, and
more easily led to a sequel.

Oh well... what can one do, but just sit back...
and watch? :-/ *Shrugs*

The film you're talking about is one of several TV-movies edited from the TV series. They are:

• Episode 1: Escape from Tomorrow
• Episode 3: The Trap
• Forgotton City of the Planet of the Apes
• Episode 2: The Gladiators
• Episode 5: The Legacy
• Treachery and Greed on the Planet of the Apes
• Episode 9: The Horse Race
• Episode 11: The Tyrant
• Life, Liberty and Pursuit on the Planet of the Apes
• Episode 7: The Surgeon
• Episode 10: The Interrogation
• Farewell to the Planet of the Apes
• Episode 6: Tomorrow's Tide
• Episode 14: Up Above the World So High

I don't believe that the TV-movies were ever released 'officially' on DVD or VHS (you might be able to find them on Ebay). However, the original TV series is on DVD and you can order it from Amazon.
