.htmlThanks Paul, No It is no secret, I sculpted the head using Prosculpt
found at Artdolls.com It is clay like. Then I sculpted his face
looking at different pictures and angles of General Urko. Once
finished I just cooked the sculpted clay in the oven for 10 minutes
and it was finished. Then my friend made a mold so I could make more
than one, after the head is casted ,I painted it ,and oput the hair
on.Its actually alot of fun for me to sculpt,as well as a challenge.I
also do alot of rock groups like Kiss ,Aerosmith etc.Next is a new
Ursus sculpt just finished. Pics will be posted after the new year.
Thanks again for your interest, The Farrow. --- In

.html I think a good case can be made that many of the functions aboard Taylor's ship were automated. You can even see the computer program tape running behind Taylor in the opening scene.

Of course, even with automation more there would still have to be some knowledge of how to operate the ship. NASA ships at the time had a flight manual and checklists aboard. Suppose Dr. Milo found and studied these materials when he salvaged Taylor's ship.
Some time ago I laid out a chronology of the events during Planet & Beneath, including BTS events that would be later revealed in Escape, that addresses these issues. (Events that were seen on film are in normal type. Places where I've guessed at the time period and events that are total supposition by me are Bolded.)

no facial hair after 2000 years of space travel? I'm still watching
this entire season again, but is there any explanation of this later in
the script? I thought the facial hair was pretty cool in the first
movie,..made it much more realistic.
Also, does anyone know of any other glitches I can look for in the TV

Well... I have two points to make on that sup-
position, again in the mode of looking at this
from what I call the 'realistic' perspective.
First... as you likely recall, in the POTA
TV series, the astronauts tried very hard to
return to their crashed ship to retrieve some-
thing, which at the moment I forget what they
called it. But close-ups of the item they re-
trieved from the flight console could easily be
defined as some kind of hard drive module. They
didn't go to retrieve any 'tape' or tapes, which
if so informationally import... would be worth
retrieving, though only God knows what they play
such tapes on.
As a device used to provide for animation,
well, even the real life tech of the time cer-
tainly included computers, an 'ancient' story
tool... not requiring 'tapes'. Digital compu-
ters were already well in use in the time the
movie was made, and since everyone knows they
are getting smaller and more powerful, their
ship certainly would have had something of
that type aboard. Analog programming was al-
ready n its way out, as a method of program-
ming in many instances.
In my view... that tape is the 'captain's
log', that Taylor was speaking into, utilizing
that nearby microphone.
Point two- water again. Ever try playing a
wet tape or one that was submerged for any period
of time? And I doubt that the water in Dead Lake
was clean to sanitary purity. tainted water is
going to leave deposits of some kind on that tape.
it must. it's part of the nature of the process
of contamination. And me... I used to repair
video tapes for vid stores... untill DVD phased
a lot of them out, and believe me... trying to
save a Betamaz or VHS movie that has gotten wet,
even with rainwater, it notoriously difficuly
to remove from those many meters of tape on a
reel. If just left to air dry as is, the tape
horribly sticks to itself, and it's otherwise
just plain impractical to hand-dry hungreds of
meters of tape. And taylor's tape is much
narrower than vid tape- and thusly much more
difficult to handly. Overall... bad news for
the very delicate info stored on it. Electronic
media is notoriously badly affected by water.
But more amazing... that such a sohisticated craft
was fully automated by one reel of Memorex.
A third point, I think, is that Milo hardly
could have magine what that tape was, how it
worked, or how important it is, much less un-
derstanding that it had to be restored from
it's soaked condition.
> Of course, even with automation more there would

> the ship. NASA ships at the time had a flight man-
> ual and checklists aboard. Suppose Dr. Milo found

> lor's ship.
I must say... that I don't believe that you've
ever actually seen the manuals and checklists that
such things as aircraft and spacecraft use. Even
as simplified documents... such are filled with an
incredibly wide variety of technical terms, that
in their own way read like Chinese. Worse, many
terms are mere abreviations, like... NASA, RCTS
and C/SM. How would Milo ever figure out what all
of those mean? Even with a simple checklist, one
has to be taught what the items on the checklist
apply to. If a checklist item says, 'Set the GnG-2
switch to '7' and observe to see if the Glomer Mode
is nominal or better'- what the devil does it mean?
And this is being read by an Ape... who has never
seen an electrical switch of any kind... in his life!
The only 'switch' he knows- is used to coerce a horse
to move forward at a faster rate, or used to spank
his naughty son's bottom in the woodshed.
'My' point, for what it's worth, is that even if
they did find manuals and checklists, could they
possibly learn how to use them? It takes a lot
more to utilize such items, than the ability to
read, and a technical language- at that. Milo...
would have to be well beyond the genius level of
intelligence, bordering on that of being a Deity,
or a Star Trek 'Q. being. And think about this;
How many people... have trouble just following
stereo instructions, or those whom STILL can't
program their VCRs. And... If I handed you all
tha manuals and checklists for an F-16 jet fighter-
craft... can 'you' get it off the ground? And in
only a matter of days? I would say 'no', unless
you are a pilot, and I very seriously doubt that
even someone flight-qualified to fly a Piper Cub,
can get an F-16 into the air. The differences
between the two are just too great. Another
example is the person whom has never driven anything
but cars with auto-transmissions, suddenly asked
to get into the cab of a semi-truck, and drive
it away in a matter of moments. NOT... gonna
happen, or at the very least... they'd be stuck in
1st gear. But what we're discussing here is much
more complex in difference than that, I'm afraid.
> Some time ago I laid out a chronology of the events

I read through your timeline, and I have a very
good point to make about that. The reference...
to tides. High tide, low tide, any tide. There
is a BIG problem with that. Let me explain why,
in three necessary parts;
1) The Moon is a LOT closer to the Earth than the
Sun. The difference ranges between 238,000 miles,
and 93 MILLION miles. The numbers are rounded. The
Moon is 391 times closer to the Earth, than the Sun
is. It's a scientifically-proven fact, that the
gravitational influence of the Moon, only a quarter
million miles away, has a FAR greater influence on
the Earth's tides than the Sun does. The tides that
are caused by the Sun, are 'tiny' in comparison to
that caused by the Moon. The influence of the Moon
is immensely greater, regardless of the fact that the
Sun ir 864,000 miles in diameter. It's shear dis-
tance is a big factor. Even gravity is subject to
the Inverse Square Law. Never underestimate the
influence and importance of the moon. In fact,
without it, the Earth would tend to tilt, and
radically, on its axis, all the time. The Moon
thusly serves as a kind of stabilizer, working in
a sense- like a gravitational gyroscope. Its
rotation around the Earth, helps to keep the Earth's
axis much more stable, than if we didn't have the
Moon.
2) BUT... there's no Moon! None. It's gone. No
one knows what happened to it... except... perhaps,
the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha... when it was
blasted from orbit, in 1999! Just joking there,
but nonetheless, the story holds that the moon is
gone. Okay then, so... the 'tides' mentioned...
cannot possibly be like they were in Taylor's time.
In fact... the tides would be almost nothing in
comparison. The Sun alone cannot produce radical
tides. A little, but not a lot. Such tides would
be, 'almost' imperceptable comparitively. This is
a big issue of physics, or rather- orbital mechanics
and gravitational influences, as far as the story is
concerned. A huge issue indeed.
3) And now, another huge error in the whole tide
issue. Dead Lake... is a lake. It's not Dead
'Ocean'. On Earth in the present day of real life,
the tidal effects due to the benefit of the Moon,
on lakes... is measured in mere millimeters, or
fractions of inches- UNLIKE the oceans where tides
are measured in full meters or feet. It's a lot
more mass as a body of water to be shifted about,
and the oceans have a LOT more space to slosh around
in. And tides... is a sloshing about- the shifting
of enormous volumes of water over time, due to gra-
vitational forces in play. AND... even if Dead
Lake had one or more rivers flowing from it, the
actual visible tidal effects, would still be tiny.
The volume of that lake alone, is an issue as noted,
and think about this now... the volume of water
is so comparitively small, that even if tidal forces
did shift the water, the volume of water is so small
that it can very quickly all shift back- flow to
level water again, before the 'tide' in the lake is
even visible. Simple fluid dynamics based on dif-
fering volumes of water. Want to try an experiment
to prove it? Try a glass of water, and a large tub
of water. Shift both at the same time to make the
water slosh, and watch which settles to 'still'-
first. It proves to be a simple matter of inertia.
The larger volume takes longer to settle down, and when
each is sloshed to exactly the same degree, the end
depths of the larger volume of water are much, much
greater- the end depths being the difference between
when the water is 'low' at one end of the tub of
water when the water is shifting to one side, and the
highter or deeper end, at the height of the slosh.
One can then see why larger oceans have easily visible
tides, while lakes don't seem to change much at all...
unless they're very large, like the Great lakes in the
US/Canada. They're almost large enough to be called
'Seas', and some named 'seas' are smaller... than the
Great Lakes. But that is an issue like... what's
the true difference between a mountain, and a large
hill? Or what makes Pluto a planet, or just anoher
Oort Cloud object? Definitions for many things, are
not clear, or haven't been worked out yet.
The above is indeed ANOTHER nit-pick that no one
has ever addressed before, ever! It too... is brand
new!!! :-D
Hope you liked it :-)
And... is anyone saving these??? :-]

I myself had noticed the absense of facial
quite some time ago.
And a question just as legitimate; How did
they manage to stay so relatively clean-shaven,
throughout the series? Did the Apes sell them
razor blades? They surely didn't use any them-

From a 'realistic' perspective you can come up with a thousand reasons
why Apes can't talk or why Superman can't fly or why the Enterprise
can't travel at warp speed or why lightsabes can't work. But what is
the point of all that negativity other than to tear down the ideas &

My father was in the navy and was stationed at Pax River where he flew
with many of the top test pilots from that generation including Alan
Shepard. My cousin has worked at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida
for decades. I have seen many checklists and flight manuals from that
era. So your condescension is inaccurate as well as unappreciated. <.html

Huh? Is that... what you think I'm doing?
Is that what you think my purpose is, employing
the nit-pickers method of cinematic analysis? To
tear down the ideas and imagination of others and
beat the fun and enjoyment out the films for every-
one else? Is that... what you really think I'm
doing? Ummm... wow. That's pretty heavy, and not
my intention at all. Jeepers, that hurts, being
accused of such a thing, really :-/
And... if you 'have' been reading what I'm
typing, and it appears that you're not, because
you missed something very important in my text,
I have noted that one purpose of nit-picking as
a method, is to enlighten those with such ima-
ginations as to why story content must be com-
plete and well thought-out from all angles, and
in the case of science fiction, the 'science'
part needs at least as much thought as the plot
and dialog. Bad science in science fiction...
makes for bad science fiction, and that is a
fact.
And interesting, I think, that you're taking
my nit-picking thread... so personally. It seems
to, well... be bothering you. And my best advice
to that, is to simple not read it. Bypass it or
delete it, without review. Simple enough, really.
Try it. You'll be less stressed,i think :-) Just
a helpful suggestion. I have no desire to bum you
out. Honest.
Otherwise, I have also already noted that it
is quite obvious that the original first POTA
was never meant to have its 'science' so closely
scrutinized, since it was made with no sequels
in mind... until it was seen that the first film
did so well, in addition to the fact that the ship
itself was not meant to be a large part of the story,
being just a plot device to get the astronauts where
they were supposed to be. However, a great deal of
attention has been paid to that ship, including that
of having an entire website devoted to it, with even
more fan fiction contributing to the 'history' of
the craft. Otherwise the producers of the film
had no productive need to define the 'science' of
the film. For them, there was just no need for it.
That leaves us, the fans, to nit-pick it and come
up with out own answers :-) And that is part of
the fun of it all :-)
In the end, I have no plans, intention, or design,
to 'ruin' anyone's enjoyment of the film, or films.
None. I've no will or agenda to destroy anyone's
'enjoyment' of what they hold so dear and take so much
pleasure in. And in the end... it's somewhat insulting
that you are suggesting... that that is my goal. That's
wrong, inaccurate... and totally unfair. What you have
seen so far, is nothing more that my own thoughts on
the matter, and if I'm not mistaken, this is the place
to actually openly discuss such things- this being the
fine POTA group that it is. What- only perfectly posi-
tive things are to be discussed here? Nothing at all
negative in the slightest way- allowed? Well... if so,
it sure doesn't say so in the group FAQ, I've noted,
after reeading it thoroughly- more than once.
Anyway, if what I've said in what to me clearly
appears to be a maturely run and informative thread,
in some way 'offends' you, then please... don't read
my own posted input about it. Please. Just ignore
it. It's... very easy to do. Please give that a
try. And I mean that in the friendliest way, ser-
iously :-) Please.
To conclude... I never mentioned 'Superman',
even once. I also never said that the Enterprise
couldn't fly at warp speed- not once. The same
holds true for lightsabres, which I positively never
mentioned or addressed. And... I never once said
that Apes cannot ever come to talk. Not once.
So, if anyone else has said those things, you have
to address those matters- with 'them'. Please...
don't accuse me of things I didn't do, or didn't
say, or... of purposely trying to ruin anyone's
enjoyment of POTA. Not in the least bit true.
That's all I really have to say on this.
And... thank you for your feedback. It's
muchly appreciated :-D

Response to Mike mlccougar@...
from Terry Hoknes (editor of Ape Chronicles)
Hey Mike well I was sure surprised to see your
posts of complaints
But instead of being annoyed I just laughed and
grinned because in most cases I do agree with you!
But I will still try and defend myself here a
bit
For anyone who was part of Ape Chronicles in the
pre-internet days you will note that we were more important then and
definitely had a more consistent publishing schedule.
But as time went by I landed up doing all the work
myself and time grew thin as I never made any money.
It was just a labor of love which didnt work out
well at times cause I travelled for years and was never home to stay on top of
things. So issues became more sporadic.
Eventually the internet came along and with
everything free on the internet it became less important to put issues of AC
out. And simply put that with so much great stuff on the net
it is truly hard to come up with a lot of original material when i get very
little contributions.
Simian Scrolls is now a way better magazine in
content and appearance - mainly because numerous people are contributing giving
it variety and some life!
However I love my POTA and always want to make my
little contribution and keep the fire burning for something that was truly
important 15 yrs ago.
I checked my records and Mike, you paid for an AC
subscription on Sept 11 2000 - and yes it took you 4 yrs and 3 months to get the
6 issues you paid for. Based on business alone thats pretty lousy I
definitely agree! However I dont rip people off - I simply kept planning
to get issues out but just never had the time to do it. I was really
happy to get #37-39 out and I really liked them. I never intended to
give you the "runaround". I do apologize that you had to wait so
long to get the issues that you paid for. Because
of your thoughts I have realized it would be best in the future that I should
just sell new issues one issue at a time and not "memberships".
In fact I do keep very good records and there are
20 people that paid for issue #40 over 2 years ago that I still have on
file. I guess you could tell me to refund their money and I
would do so if they asked for it but they will be guaranteed to get their paid
issue when it finally sees daylight.
At one point in time AC was the only POTA related
item you could get. I think it had an important role in the early 90s -
the internet has made it a little bit obsolete - if you dont like the contents
though that is totally up to you to be critical. All I can say is I
wish more people would contribute and that would make it a better overall
fanzine.
And yes if nobody contributes or shows interest
maybe #40 won't see daylight for another 6 months!
Believe it or not it does take me a lot of work to
put an issue together whether anyone appreciates it or not.
So its way easier to NOT work on it but I really
want to.
In terms of content my overly thorough breakdown of
episodes is my favorite thing. And yes it might get ridiculous at times
but I will NOT stop doing that. If a chicken crosses the road I am
gonna mention it - everybody has analyzed Star Wars and Star Trek to death and
I'm trying to do my part with POTA.
I have sort of treated the "POTA Fan Club" as a
business mainly as selling POTA collectibles. Perhaps some things
are overpriced but in most cases not really. I have not actually
made any money - i've propably lost having things in stock. I really lost
out when I did my best to promote the 2001 movie and carry merchandise.
Nobody supported me and I had to clear out a ton of stuff at bargain bin prices
to get rid of it.
Simply put if you enjoy Ape Chronicles then I hope
you want future issues and if you dont then definitely pass it up. Its not
for everybody.
I am a very easy going open-minded person who lives
a very busy life. I go through fazes where I try to focus on POTA and then
I have to put it aside for other things in life. So at least I try to get
motivated.
I can't believe 15 years has gone by. The
world has changed as has POTA fans. Think how important these
yahoogroups have been for discussion. Well at one time Ape
Chronicles was the only way to have that discussion. Now I use the
fanzine as a way to summarize stuff and keep important POTA related items
together which does mean I include some reprinted items from the internet.
But anyways I look forward to more criticisms but since I am the editor I put
together things that I think should be saved in print. Many items that are
neat on the internet disappear after a time so I try to keep them saved
forever.
Anyways I've rambled enough - I look forward to a
heated discussion about all this and
I want to say thanks to Mike for being upfront and
honest about this.
It will give me ideas on how to hopefully make AC
future issues better than ever.

Yes, this is an excellent book for fans of
Stan Winston but a bit pricey (about $50). Lots of rare photos. There's also
shots of Winston on the set of "Battle" and the TV show. Winston was a
struggling actor who went to see the original POTA movie and was inspired to try
being a makeup artist. The rest is history. Winston really wanted to do the new
POTA and spent a lot of his own time and resources developing ape concepts. He
seemed a shoe-in when Schwartzenegger was involved, since he, Winston and James
Cameron are really tight. But when Burton got involved the job reverted to ape
god Rick Baker.
Winston is best known for making "creatures"
such as "Terminator", "Aliens" and "Jurassic Park". His apes were mechanical
appliances that fit over the actors and he was working on a way for the actors
to manipulate it facially like makeup. - - - Jeff

Fans of the POTA TV show might want to check
out the current issue of "Premiere" magazine. In listing the best performances
of the year they include a short interview and picture of Jackie Earle Haley,
who's getting raves as a sex offender in the movie "Little Children". Haley was
a child actor probably best known as the punk kid in the original "Bad news
Bears"(1976), as well as "Breaking Away" (1979). He also was featured in "The
Legacy" episode of POTA as the lost boy Kraik. Haley is now 45 (!) and also was
in the Sean Penn movie "All the King's Men" this year. He can be seen on pg. 94
of "Premiere". He says the best acting advice he can give is "persevere". - - -

How about... an article called something like-
'Friends & Lovers'? It defines the relatioinships
betweeen the various characters in the POTA universe.
Taylor and Nova were obviously lovers, while
Nova and Brent, were friends at lest. Cornelius
and Zira are loversd also, in fact Married With
Children. Also Lisa and Caesar :-) There are
many others throughout the films, the Tv series
and other sources, which could result in quite a
full article, perhaos one that covers several
issues in an article series :-)
Another could be a defined 'List of Malevoments'
a definition of the 'bad guys' in the totality of
the POTA theme. Urko, Ursus, Dr Zaius and all the
rest- likely a smaller article by itself, as it
describes how they fit in as a Nemesis one by one
in the saga :-)
Or how about... 'Ape Tech'. I got this idea
from the Tv show about 'Wild West Tech' on the
History tech, which described the technology of
the 1800's American Old West, which Ape tech cul-
ture very closely resembles. An article defining
the tech in use by Ape society, including actual
experimental brain surgery (something done by the
Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Greeks and Aztecs),
firearm technology, plate photography, taxadermy,
paper manufacturing, architecture, and so on :-)
All civilizations make use of some form of tech
science, regardless of how primitive.
Hope those suggestions help :-)

Well... I see Tim Burton's rendition of POTA as
just a different re-telling of the POTA tale. It
is neither a prequel or sequel, and doesn't follow
the storyline of the other films. The NEW POTA is
just a rehashing of the story under a differnt vision,
and stands on it's own- not even being a branch on the
same tree as the original format of the OLD POTA.
And I might add that the TB POTA (Tim Burton's POTA)
lacks much for nitpickers to chew on, except for two
very big glaring points, that cannot be ignored. The
first and not-so-obvios to many at first, is... where
in the devil did the horses come from??? That's some-
thing of a big question. There were DNA samples aboard,
and they were developed in artificial wombs or something?
Erf. Makes no sense considering that space station's
mission. The animal apes as experimental animals made
total sense. And #2, the big one, is that damned freaky
'surprise ending'. I've seen professional nit-pickers
struggle like hell to figure that one out, and it's such
a difficult problem relative to the plot... that it does
not leave open much the chance of a sequel that will
make sense... UNLESS... something just as weird and
baffling is slipped in to justify the sequel. Damn Tim
Burton anyway. Instead of coming up with something so
'surprising[- and baffling, I would have preferred that
he came up with something that actually made sense, and
more easily led to a sequel.
Oh well... what can one do, but just sit back...
and watch? :-/ *Shrugs*

.html Diane Stanley. She played 'Stewart'. She had no lines
and did far less than any of the extras on POTA1, though
she did get a really good closeup :-)
However... when I did a Google image search of her, her
picture didn't show up through 12 full page of searching.
Not even once.
Questions; Did she ever do any other films? It's like...
she stepped into the movement-free roll, with fewer
lines than Nova even had, like she was an office secre-
tary or something, in need of a couple of extra bucks.
What other films did she do? She still alive? Does
anyone know anything about her at all beyond her POTA
role... such as it was?
Pleas help. Thanx :-)

look even more than the stories, though the great story was needed as
well.I think that if they ever do make a new Planet of the Apes
film, they should stick with the original look of the early original
films,that look is The Planet of the Apes;

The film you're talking about is one of several TV-movies edited from the TV series. They are:
- Back to the Planet of the Apes
- Episode 1: Escape from Tomorrow
- Episode 3: The Trap
- Forgotton City of the Planet of the Apes
- Episode 2: The Gladiators
- Episode 5: The Legacy
- Treachery and Greed on the Planet of the Apes
- Episode 9: The Horse Race
- Episode 11: The Tyrant
- Life, Liberty and Pursuit on the Planet of the Apes
- Episode 7: The Surgeon
- Episode 10: The Interrogation
- Farewell to the Planet of the Apes
- Episode 6: Tomorrow's Tide
- Episode 14: Up Above the World So High
I don't believe that the TV-movies were ever released 'officially' on DVD or VHS (you might be able to find them on Ebay). However, the original TV series is on DVD and you can order it from Amazon.

Paul, though they're a fun find if you can track down the DVDs,
they're really nothing more than spliced TV-show episodes. New
footage of Galen was filmed to introduce each movie, which can be
downloaded at Kassidy's site.

.html Hi Rob, I don't suppose there is any chance that you have pursued
the possibility of writing a new novel based on the Apes saga?
I notice you have worked with David Gerrold in the past and he has
his name on an Ape novel.
Your credentials do you proud and an approach to the suits who
decide such things might prove fortuitous.
Although it probably wouldn't make your publisher see large $ signs.
Just a stray thought.
On another note, based on recent indepth(pun intended)
deconstruction of 'Where the hell the Damn dirty Apes got their paws
on a ship...'
I have been rather busy in the bath testing interior and exterior
water pressure and the effects of such on inertia. But swallowing so
much bath water isn't recommended.
Don't try this at home. ;^)
Happy 2007.

This issue continues both the Battle and Beneath adaptations, with a 2-page letter column sanwiched in-between. Seven more issues until one of these adaptations concludes along with the magazine at issue 123 and the other continues into Mighty World of Marvel (which we'll also be posting - all 16 issues that contained Apes comics). Which will it be? Place your bets now, true believers! Also this week we have the 4th issue of Simian Scrolls, from Winter 2001, now available in PDF format. | Subject: A Search- for POTA Apes & POTA props... for 3D Artwork. |
|
.html Hello, Fellow Primates,
One among my many interests... is creating 3D artwork,
utilizing programs like Poser, 3D Studio Max, TrueSpace
3D and others. Notable is the fact that for some enter-
taining series, such as Star Trek and others, there is a
great deal of premade 3D items that make it possible to
create 3D scenes, without having to know how to make such
3D props and figures one's self. Consisting of numerous
posable 3D characters and static props, such as starships
and various weapons and equipment, some mediums have ex-
tensive lists of items to choose from, varying in quality
of workmanship detail, but indeed available in great num-
bers.
My question; Is anyone aware of any site or resource
that offer ANYTHING at all in the was of POTA 3D rendering
materials- characters (such as posable 3D Ape figures),
ape clothing, props, or anything else of that nature, even
if it's just an item or two? The more such resources, the
better, of course.
I would appreciate any URLs to such 3D rendering re-
sources, as I'd like to produce a few POTA images, and
perhaps even a POTA story. Anything... to add to the
POTA fan base of contributed materials, and for fun :-)
Thanx in advance :-)

I'm not expecting anything to "occur" -- except maybe a Blu-ray DVD release of PLANET on the 40th Anniversary in 2008 -- and as for lying around in the past, well... most things APES are old, and what else is being into old stuff about but a nostalgia for the past.

.htmlThade, my apologies if I'm misinterpreting your note -- with all due
respect, your unorthodox posting style and wording sometimes leaves
me scratching my head, thinking "Huh?" But it seems to me you're
saying that this group has no tolerance for the Burton film and is
too stuck in the past for your tastes. If that's the case, then my
responses are as follow:
1) All preferences, Apes-wise, are welcome here. I've not once seen
someone derided for enjoying one version of Apes over the other, so I
have no idea what you mean when you say "one-sidedness." One of the
reasons I like this group so much, even if I don't have a lot of time
to post, is that the people here are fair-minded and intelligent, no
matter what their tastes might be.
2) The reaction to Burton's film here is no different than anywhere
else -- which is to say that most people felt it was
inferior. That's true no matter where you go. You may like it, and
that's absolutely fine -- vive la diference -- but you're deluding
yourself if you think this group's lukewarm reaction to the film is
only endemic to this group. Worldwide, the reaction to the film,
from fans and critics alike, was lukewarm, so no matter where you go,
that's what you'll find.
3) As for lying around in the past and just expecting something to
occur, that's just silly. Between this group and the POTADG group,
you'll find the most active fans anywhere in POTA fandom. The owners
of both groups, and many of the people who frequent them, are the
ones who keep POTA alive by publishing fanzines and fan comics and
organizing clubs and in every way trying to promote the Apes
mythos. And that includes both the new and the old.
4) No matter how hard we might wish for new Apes films, the bottom
line is this: the Burton film didn't do well, killing our chances of
further Apes films for the time being. The only new Apes stories
being published are comic books utilizing the older characters,
because all attempts to sell books and comics based on the Burton
film tanked due to lack of fan response. The older version of Apes
sells better for a very simple reason -- most folks like it
better. That's not to say people don't have a right to prefer
Burton's remake, because all views are welcome. But you have to be
realistic in your expectations. If this were a Star Trek group and
you wanted people to spend all their time talking about the film
Nemesis instead of what came before, despite the fact that it wasn't
well-received by fans, that would be absurd. That's the same case here.

I just heard on the radio that Fox is
claiming $3.6 billion worldwide box office for 2006 (an industry record), thanks
to movies like "X-Men 3", "Ice Age 3", "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Borat").
According to "Variety", Fox was # 1 overseas ($2 billion) and # 3 domestic ($1.4
billion). They aren't hurting. Time to spend some dough developing a new "Apes".
Sequels aren't exactly hurting them.
The remake of Heston's "Omega Man" starring
Will Smith comes out this year, I think from Warner Bros. Happy New Year!

.htmlBoy, you said it, Rory...I'm very eclectic in my tastes for movies, and
NOTHING has interested me at the show for a looong time!...I'm tired of
the remakes, and the TV show re-dos; especially where one of the main
points seems to be to put an ethnic actor in the lead, regardless of
whether it fits the storyline, or is even appropriate...
