I agree, it's a good idea though. (that's 'good' in the same sense as
the idea of a stuffed Dodge).

Hi Vin,

I saw these about a week ago and didn't make the connection
that you were the artist.

These images are in equal measure both astonishing and superb! Bravo,
sir! Is 3D modelling and rendering a hobby or an extension of your job?

Is there any chance of some hi-res versions? I would love to have a
good quality printout to hang on the wall.

This morning our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Roscoe Lee Browne who died yesterday at the age of 81. Mr. Browne appeared on the PLANET OF THE APES TV Series in the episode 'Tomorrow's Tide'. He will be missed.

We are also saddened by the death of author Kurt Vonnegut. Although he had nothing to do with POTA, Vonnegut was a great writer and his death is a loss to our culture.

Imbibing!...

Seriously, I believe I read somewhere, years ago when my hair had
natural color in it, that they were toying with the idea of a last
film or a TV show...Don Murray made it known that he didn't want to
be connected with Apes beyond CONQUEST...

I can't remember anything Roscoe Lee Browne performed in that I didn't
enjoy -- from "Logan's Run" all the way to "All in the Family"...I met
him once, and he was a perfect gentleman...

I must agree with the defence of Breck - I think the guy is just unspeakably
cool. I love the fact that on one hand he's actually got noble intentions at
heart but on the other hand he doesn't realise that he's a raving lunatic.
Also, he's the only guy I've ever seen who made me think polo-necks were
cool.

I agree with both of those statements. Taylor sounded very Vonnegut at the beginning of Planet with his goodbye to humanity soliloquy.

I agree here totally.  Kolp was a great movie villain, but Breck was definitely the Governor if ever there was one.  Mr. Murray certainly played his role superbly and filled the shoes of Governor Breck.

I've always enjoyed roles where the character *thinks* they're doing the right thing for the right reason, and it ultimately ends up coming back to haunt them in one manner or another (Hasslein was similar in one sense inasmuch as you could argue his actions brought about the very thing he sought to prevent). Even at the very end when Breck found out Caesar was still alive, he refused to budge and (figuratively) spat in Caesar's face with his "When we hate you, we're hating the dark side of ourselves" speech.  Don Murray played the role exceptionally well.

Kolp, however, was a pretty cool bad guy as well. I enjoyed both characters for different reasons.

Maybe my view of Breck is imprinted by John Jakes' novel, but my
opinion is that Breck is not unspeakably cool but is, instead, a 24
carat knob. He's a bully, a drunkard, probable wife killer, arrogant,
charmless and, let us not forget, ultimately the ineffective clown who
allows a bunch of mute apes to bring civilisation crashing down around
his ears.He disintegrates in panic during the uprising and is weak
beyond belief. The man is a total tosser. John, Scrolls.

It's only because we identify with Zira and Cornelius that we root for the Apes.
They were going through the same thing Taylor went through.  Being a fugitive
who really means no harm.  Though their own existence in a different time is
itself harmful.  I doubt we'd feel the same if Zaius and Ursus went back in time.

      Hi Bill,

All you need to do is touch the tip of one finger to your nose. With
the other hand juggle three kittens whilst hopping along a straight line.

Alternatively you could try contacting Kassidy Rae, our US
distributor. <valwp@...>. Kass will let you know how and where
      to send any payment.

Building any business from the ground up is no easy task. Especially when the only thing your business is selling is yourself! So when it comes to working hard for something, San Diego Comedy Store regular, Mark Gonzalez, is no stranger to hard work.

In January, Mark entered an online comedy competition at the website www.famecast.com. The competition began with 100 comedians from across the country uploading video clips of their performances and getting people to log in, watch their clip and if they liked it, cast their vote to get them into the next round. Mark has been working at this for the last four months and with his talent and tenacity has managed to get enough votes to get him into the top five of this national competition. But the contest isn't over yet. He still needs your help! The competition is coming to an end.

On Saturday, April 14th, www.famecast.com is flying Mark to Austin, Texas, where he will compete in a Live web-cast show featuring Mark and 4 other comedians all vying for the title of Famecast Phenom!

The FINALS show will take place Saturday, April 14th @ 8 PM CST and voting will be taking place live, as the performance is web-cast on www.famecast.com as well as the TWO days following the performance.

Please help Mark one last time and vote for him at www.famecast.com.
The 5 step voting process will take you less than 5 minutes.  In less than 5 minutes you can help a friend/neighbor realize his dream.

      Subject: (OT) Fox "Caprice" DVD
      .html
.html.html I rented from Netflix this DVD of an obscure 1967 Doris Day movie "Caprice."  Why?  Well, because it happens to feature a rare appearance by Robert "Landon" Gunner, and has an even rarer cameo by POTA director of photography Leon Shamroy, who was also the DP on this picture.  Amazingly Fox has provided a lot of extras with this movie including a commentary track, where the Gunner POTA connection is mentioned, AND more importantly a couple of those "Dick Strout Radio Interviews."  Both are listened to while you view a collection of stills and original ads and poster images.  Now, if Fox has these "radio interviews" from this nearly forgotten movie, I'll bet they also have the ones for POTA '68 mentioned in the pressbook.  Perhaps they'll show up in a future APES DVD release?  Well, let's bloody hope so!

In other news, both "Fantastic Voyage" (1966) and the original "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1961) movie will be re-released in special edition DVDs in June.  Both will have commentary tracks and new featurettes.  Let's see if any "radio interviews" pop up on them too.  Both DVDs also feature original ad art on their covers and these can be viewed on Amazon.com, if you care to look them up.

I'm getting the strong feeling that next year will see a new DVD special edition of at least PLANET!  Let's bloody well hope so!

          I had forgotten about those.

OK, so the next question is where did the names used in the promotional Herald come from? Fox Publicity? Did they realize that two of the characters didn't have any names and just make something up? Or did they refer back to someone involved with the production? Which still brings up the point of never seeing either of these two names in any of the scripts that are available. And for that matter, I have to wonder why Mendez, Albina, and Caspay had names because they were never used in the film. I wonder how the audience was supposed to know who was who- unless they knew who the actors were.

And then there's the fact that I've usually seen DPC character referred to as 'Ongaro' not 'Ongoro', so you have to wonder where the misspelling originally took place. Did Fox Publicity mess up, or was someone remembering what they saw in the promotional Herald and ended up changing a letter?

According to IMDB.com he died in 1992.
And that's all they say about him other than this:

          Actor:
          1. Planet of the Apes (1968) .... Landon
            ... aka Monkey Planet
          2. Caprice (1967) (uncredited) .... Farley
          3. The Jackals (1967) .... Stretch
          4. "The Green Hornet" .... Detective (1 episode, 1966)
... aka The Kato Show (Hong Kong: English title: informal title)
                - The Ray Is for Killing (1966) TV Episode (as Bob Gunner) .... Detective
          5. Our Man Flint (1966) (uncredited) .... Agent 0008
          Archive Footage:
          1. Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) (uncredited) .... Landon

So he didn't have much of a career.

This is what I know about their names:

Mendez - means "cleverness"; possible extrapolation of Mohandas,
          meaning "charming servant"
Albina - from albino, meaning "pale" or "white"; albinos have blue or
          pink irises
Caspay - possible extrapolation from Caspar, meaning "treasurer"
Ongoro - means "dark" or "black"
Adiposo - from adipose, meaning "fat" or "fatty"

In their BATTLE adaptation there were not only different renderings of it, but it also seemed to change location from inside to outside at least once if I recall correctly. MacDonald also mysteriously grew a beard between chapters.

The art for the Marvel Battle adaptations was cursed by rotating
artists---if you look at the Council scene when Aldo ejects the
humans, they're all wearing totally modern clothes.Caesar is losing
his hair due to radiation then he isn't etc,.Battle was the only
adaptation that had more than one artist on the run (Alacazar,
Alcala, Castrillo, and Trinidad, at least) and it did spoil the look
and mood in parts---some of it was clearly rushed.I actually think
that Marvel's little Beneath Bomb is far cooler than the phallic big
bomb!Marvel achieved a remarkable feat in managing to complete the
adaptation of all five movies, however. John Scrolls.

You are right about that, it's a shame that Alfredo Alcala didn't do most of BATTLE, as far as I'm concerned, he was the best artist.

As I recall, they weren't intending on doing anything else after they finished up BATTLE.  But it would have been nice, in addition to the TV series they could have kept going with TERROR...kept the stories continuing about Jason, Alex, Malaguena, Lightsmith, Brutus and the others.

They do if they're Lightsmith and they've been to the lameass Psychodrome. I actually think that Terror took place on an alternate earth... perhaps the one that Leo returns to in 2001's Planet of the Apes...

Nope, Terror took place on this Earth , as is evidenced by the same
speech, clothes, monuments etc.I own a page of Tom Sutton's art with
a note from Doug Moench telling him to remove a dog, as that
conflicted with Apes movies, so it's clearly the same
world. What's 'lameass' about the Pychedrome?--brain washing innocents
to carry out the ruler's mission and betraying a dream of a better
world.Obviously no social relevance to the real world. John, Scrolls.

So? Alternate realities can have minor differences (no dogs) as well as similarities (clothing). You can believe what you want, I still can't beleive that Doug Moench one of my favorite writers of the time wrote such drek as that. The bit with Gunpowder and such might as well have been called Daniel Simian of the Wild Frontier. And that recurring bs with Brutus. Shit, just put one through his head already and move on to a new villain. Jeez...

Nope, Terror took place on this Earth , as is evidenced by the same
speech, clothes, monuments etc.I own a page of Tom Sutton's art with
a note from Doug Moench telling him to remove a dog, as that
conflicted with Apes movies, so it's clearly the same
world. What's 'lameass' about the Pychedrome?- -brain washing innocents

world.Obviously no social relevance to the real world.

If it was done by the TV division, probably not. Too rushed into production. Shows that Virdon and Burke also exist in an alteranate time line. Just like the Cartoon... and Terror.

How can you say you were 11 years old in 1974 when the series made it's
debut? If you are 40, then you would have been 7 (or 8/going on 8)when
it aired. Something is quite off with your math.

I have to correct you here. The orangutan in the TV series isn't Dr.
Zaius. Dr. Zaius is only in PLANET and BENEATH. The Zaius character on
TV is a High Council member, but not the Minister of Science/Chief
Defender of The Faith that Dr. Zaius was in the films. They are not the
same ape, nor are they supposed to be.

I'm on Brendans side, whoever he is. Terror stunk. Moench took ideas that sounded like they were from a Charles Band movie and threw together. And the characters he came up with were lame as well. This was as bad as the Original Galactica, with stupid episodes like Gun on Ice Planet Zero (otherwise known as the Guns of Navarone.)

First, I'll post anything I care to post. I'm not offensive, I don't flame others. I didn't like Terror then and I like it less now. It's a lame series of ideas, unworthy of being part of Planet of the Apes. It takes ideas, as I said, that a Charles Band movie wouldn't and asks a reader to accept them, which I didn't and don't. The best single non-Movie adaptation was Evolution's Nightmare, which blew Terror away. And when Tom Sutton took over the artwork, which was the one good thing (thanks Mike Ploog) took a nosedive. Am I telling others not to like it. Hell no. that would be like telling Trekkies not to like Entercrud. But I don't like it and no one can make me. It was bad, bad, bad.

And I still think it and the Planet of the Apes TV series are alternate realities, or microrealities, branched off from the main time stream.

Those are my guns and I'm sticking to them.

I re-read my last post and didn't mean to say 'getting at the person'
I meant 'getting at the exhumation of the dead topic as to who does
                      and doesn't like Terror...'
And I do not think that people can say/post anything they want
because of some belief that it is their 'RIGHT' to express
                      themselves without considering consequences.
Particularly since sticking to guns is why nothing is ever resolved.
Harlan Ellison (nasty man) once said the 'Internet gives all those

                      skull and crossbones are unveiled.
Terror was a lovely litany of language, a poetical puree of prose, a

In today's newspaper - two stories on apes.

Scientists are confirming what POTA fans have always known (or at least debated)

Orang-utans are more intelligent than Chimpanzees and Gorillas.

The study concluded that of 25 primate species studied Orangs had developed the best problem solving abilities.

The reasoning is that Orang-utans live mostly in high treetops - avoiding predators so they have developed a relaxed thinking lifestyle based with a culture and intelligence.

Other primates lead faster lives, so have developed different brains and skill sets.

Gorillas were ranked lower than Spider Monkeys....

In a second news article Chimpanzees have evolved more than Humans since the two split from a common ancestor.

Genome comparison shows that Chimp genes have changed more than human since they diverged as two species about 7 million years ago.

This research looked for genes that showed evidence of positive selection - those that evolved quickly because of an adaptive benefit in the environment - rather than those that changed more by genetic drift (random mutation).

Humans have 154 such genes  Chimpanzees have 233.

I have to agree with Glen. Everyone is free to express their opinion here. Just don't get personal. We all have are own tastes about the various incarnations of POTA through the years. In this case it may be best to just agree to disagree.

I've lived all my life in NYC. As a result I don't like mustard on a Hamburger. No New Yorker does. The rest of the country disagrees with us. Does that make us wrong. No it just means we have different tastes.
