Bill Blake is looking for any
and all ORIGINAL publicity photos/press-kit materials,
etc., from his 1970's "Meet Zira and Cornelius" live
show-tours/personal appearances, especially Bill's 'before and after' photo
captioned "William Blake as Cornelius" (an edited/cropped version of which
can be seen on pg. 34 of Marvel's POTA Magazine # 12). Those who have any of
these materials (Remember, ORIGINALS ONLY, and in VG to Excellent
Condition), please contact me at veetus@... .

Sounds like he takes his character name
going from Angaro to A Negro pretty well.
What the hell were they thinking? Even
for the early 70's! You'd think they would
just call him The Jailer. That's just weird!

| Subject: The Apes... of Elsewhere |
|
.html Hello all :-)
A couple of friends and I were discussing some
aspects of Ape 'culture' and civilization, when one
noted that there were quite common similarities
between the Apes as depicted on the US East Coast,
and the West Coast. As depicted in the movies and
TV show, the two coasts show amazing similarities
that by all rights should not be, considering the
great distances involved.
This is a nitpick of sorts, yes, no question,
and indeed from a realistic perspective both Ape
cultures should look quite different from one ano-
ther, however they share the same architecture,
clothing styles and weapon designs, separated by
the great expanse of the middle of geographical
America. Unless these widely separated groups are
indeed communicating very closely and quickly,
this just cannot be. They being sentient Apes can-
not explain why they have cultures that are so
darned similar. It severely violates the rules of
cultural development.
I myself live in Baltimore City, Maryland. It
is not that far from Washington DC at all, and our
two cites share very little in common. We are a
different as we can be, as different as we are from
NY or LA. The similarities are quite few. Being
close, DC is a good place to visit, just to go see
someplace 'different' in so many ways. And surely
the average person here has noted the differences
from town to town in your own areas. It is those
differences that make them all interesting in their
own ways, to often radical degrees.
So, rather than me asking 'why' Ape cilture, so
widely divided, is so similar in so many ways, I
merely wish to say that the similarities, so close as
to be virtual clones of one another, just cannot be.
In consideration of their lack of instantaneous commu-
nication and their lack of ability to cover such huge
distances easily- being restricted to moving about on
foot or on horseback. Travel between both coasts would
take months to accomplish. Otherwise it is unreasonable
to presume that the Ape cultures of both coasts would be
anything alike. And likely only one would have 'The
Great Lawgiver', as the other would have developed a
completely unrelated religion and belief system. And
indeed their politics would be different too. Likely
they would not be in any way alike.
And yes, I know, money is saved by using the same
costumes, props and sets for wherever Apes are found
in the various series in movies or Tv. That goes
without saying. Redeveloping things as such to depict
different Ape cultures is an expensive move. No ques-
tion. I accept that.
However, understanding how separate cultures develop
from one another, opens the door to writing Ape stories
where any kind of culture can be defined, all radically
different from the one so familier to us. As such no
writer is restricted to what is known. Ape cultures
anywhere can be defined in any way desired, as such that
Humans and Apes can indeed be living in complete harmony
elsewhere, where Humans never did dumb down to become
more like animals in their behavior. Things can be very,
very different in any country in South America, Europe
and Asia. And since places like Australia seem to follow
the course of evolution in a very different way... why
cannot Kangaroos have come to have replaced Humans as the
dominant sentient species?!?! :-) Rediculous??? No,
no more so than Apes achieving sentience as we accept
so easily. And in the furry fandom it's easily accepted
that any species of furry can become sentient, due to a
variety of causes, ranging from natural evolutionary
change, to alternate universes, to genetic manipulation,
and so on.
My final point is... is that the variety of Ape cultural
possibilities is endless, and as long as 'Apes' are in-
volved, it is still 'The Planet of the Apes'. Me... I'm
a bit tired of seeing the same Ape culture described as
being virtually everywhere, without variation. Tim Bur-
ton's film, in spite of its faults, defined an interesting
variation in Ape culture as we knew it before that film
came along. I found the differences to be fascinating in
the extreme. It was a different Ape City as every Ape
City should be different from every other one. It was as
different as another nation entirely. No Lawgiver, oh...
what a relief. Why would they have developed such? No
Apes taking hunting trophy pictures. Cool :-) Apes ac-
tually moving much more like real apes do! Marvelous!!!
In spite of its faults, Burton's film gave us as different
a view of a varied Ape culture as one could hope for, or na-
turally would expect.
So then, you writers out there, what would an Ape
culture be like is found diversely elsewhere? In Spain,
in France, England or Germany, Argentina or... Australia?
Russia? China? Canada? Japan? Wow... just imagine ;-D

After you click "reply", then click on the blue "Rich-Text Editor" link near the top.
Then, click on the "View HTML Source" checkbox
Then type the following for an image:

obviously, replace the URL with wherever your pic is hosted, change yourpicture.jpg with the actual name of your image, and you must include the width and height of your image in pixels.

There's also a video montage from last weekend's Memorabilia 2007 show

| Apesters, maybe you can help me with this. I think that Hunter has this on his fantastic site as well. (By the way, Hunter, you ARE the King, no doubt about that!) In the Gold Key comic adaptation of BENEATH, when Brent and Nova came out of the tunnel, it looks as if they walked past what must be part of the Radio City marquee (there's something that appears to say, ..."sic Hall...RAD" at the top of the picture, right about the balloon where Brent says, "Hear it? A hum? We're heading toward it, whatever it is!"
I wondered as to why they showed the back view of the Statue Of Liberty at the end of the comic adaptation, too, right when the Doomsday Bomb was activated. Zach | <.html

In the panel you mention, it does look like the Radio City marquee. As to why they included the statue in the last panel, I imagine the artist took some creative license to tie things in with the first film.

If you go to the Group website's One Sheet section

there are high resolution scans of all the original posters. You can
download these and then bring them to a T-shirt place and have them
make up your own T-shirts.

The German Lobby Cards hosted on Hunters site are all attached as one
poster sized sheet. They are scanned individually but still attached.
Very fragile serration though. The more they are handled, the more
they are torn away from the others, if you know what I mean. Also they
are not card material but Glossy Poster paper.

I forgot to add that they are an odd mixture of images from Planet

.html .html.htmlOK, so I watch PLANET yesterday for the umpteenth time (I stopped counting after 250 viewings), and what did I spot I've never noticed before? Powerlines in a shot! It's at 1:23:09 into the movie, after Lucius helps Taylor and Nova escape and the camera titles up and Zira says the line, "I told you not to bring the other one!" Freeze the shot and look at what's just behind Lucius' back. Three powerlines against the blue sky. Of course, there would have had to have been electricity brought into the Fox ranch to power all the equipment, so I guess here are three of the lines bringing it in. Incredible I never noticed it before.
Later in the movie, at 1:29:11, I also noticed, atop a cliff just before the nose of Heston's horse covers it (it goes past very quickly), what looks like a tower for powerlines in the Arizona desert.
Check it out.

A few of the drawing looked exactly like Heston and Franciscus, which is
something that Marvel couldn't do in their adaptations. I wonder if the Gold Key
book just kind of slid under the radar. Paul Richards (as Mendez) was recreated
exactly as well, and little bits of detail like Caspay's glasses were also
included. Whomever did the artwork (did we ever find that out) must have had
excellent source material from Fox. From what I can remember, this comic
featured the only depiction of the Alpha Omega bomb as it originally
appeared in the film.

There were two movies with Jon Saxon- 'Planet Earth' (1974) and 'Strange
New World' (1975), and 'Genesis II' (1973) with Alex Cord. Rodenberry wasn't
involved with 'Strange New World', but all three had the same theme- person from
the present in a changed futuristic society. All three were prominently
featured on The 4:30 Movie back in the 70's.
I've never seen 'The Questor Tapes' unfortunately.
Chris L.
>> Which is too bad because he did some good stand alone stuff;
Genesis II which was about a scientist placed in suspended animation who wakes
after a nuclear war. There are two societies; Pax (good guys) and Terrania (evil
mutants and slave holders). This was really dark and ended with Dylan Hunt
(reused name for Andromeda) wiping out Terrania with a nuke they were planning
to use on Pax. It was redone as Planet Earth, which was more light hearted, less
violent and had proto-new Klingons in the form of the Kreeg. The Questor Tapes
was about an android one of a line put here by aliens to guide us to a better
way of life. Specter was a pretty grim horror story (supposedly the European cut
is more graphic). The one thing about Roddenberry is that he was a one trick
poney; his ideas of Utopia and peace were his only ideas. I think that's one of
the things that has worn down viewers with Star Trek. In today's world, with all
the problems, can one really buy that message? Do we look like we're remotely on
the way to world peace? << <.html <.html

When you think about it, that's even a more apocalyptical image than Taylor
standing in front of the destroyed Statue. Now the Statue itself is destroyed,
which speaks volumes regarding what the whole story was about in the
first place.
"With this unspeakable explosion, the City once again-- and for all time
--is destroyed."
Chris L.
In the panel you mention, it does look like
the Radio City marquee. As to why they included the statue in the last panel,
I imagine the artist took some creative license to tie things in with the
first film. <<

The first draft story outline for Battle (available on Hunter's site) is dated July 5, 1972. That was after Conquest was released. And since in the final version of Conquest Breck wasn't killed, his character was available to appear in Battle.

David Gerrold wrote the novelization as the film was being made. He even visited the set. Thus the novelization was very close to the final film.
Marvel stated at the time that their adaption was based on the version of the script they were sent by FOX. This was obviously not the final version since there are many differences with the film.

I believe the names for both characters come from the promotional Herald issued for the film.
Oddly they switched Albina and Caspay's names by mistake.

That's what confuses me though. Even though his character's death wasn't in
the final version of CONQUEST, it was nonetheless filmed because he said that he
didn't want to reprise the character so that was a way to address the
character's absence in any subsequent movies. So why then was his character
included in the first draft of BATTLE (dated July 5th 1972) when
CONQUEST was already in theaters and the whole issue of him not wanting to
come back (and how to resolve it) was already months in the past? There were
lines to address the missing characters ("If the bomb hadn't killed the old
Governor...", "The black man is the brother of my predecessor's personal
assistant..."). Do we know for a fact that the death scene was filmed because
Don Murray said (during filming of CONQUEST) that he didn't want to do a sequel?
Or was the scene filmed, cut because of the violence, and then he bowed out
during preproduction for BATTLE and then the "If the bomb hadn't killed the old
Governor..." line was put in to address his absence?
And why we're on the subject, anyone know why Hari Rhodes declined to
appear in BATTLE?

No one ever said Murray said he didn't want to reprise the role while they were filming Conquest. When they filmed Conquest it was assumed to be the last of the series so the subject of anyone reprising their roles probably never came up. Frank Capra said that the decision to kill Armando was based on them thinking it was the last film.

Hollywood North Report posted a rumor that director Scott Derrickson ( The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will helm Fox's remake of the classic 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still, currently prepping for production in Vancouver, Canada.
The original was directed by Robert Wise and tells the story of an alien (Michael Rennie) and his robot, who come to Earth with a stern warning.
The time frame of the remake will likely be updated, though no specifics are available yet.
The Day the Earth Stood Still is scheduled to shoot until next November, making it one of the longest theatrical shoots ever to film in the region, the site reported.
