Aside from JeH as Rorschach, I'm really not thrilled about any of this casting. A big part of the story was that these characters were approaching middle age, and Hollywood has seen fit to use the typical "fresh, young cast" mentality.

Much as I love this story, I have doubts that anything other than a 12 to 15 hour mini-series could do it justice.

Did you see the trailer that was shown at the San Diego Comic Con? The assholes at Paramount made You tube take it down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVRQjCG8tn4), but I'm sure someone has it on their site somewhere.

Between this and The Dark Knight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWw0ov-cAUg), I think we're going to have two great Superhero movies next summer.

I think the point is about the pic of Roddy and Sal is that why, if
their faces couldn't be seen, would you ever ask them to put on the
suits at all. They're clearly hot an uncomfortble and , given that
their roles were so punishing due to make-up anyway, you'd use
doubles unless, of course, they had to act---acting includes physical
action as well as speaking. John.

I'd heard that story too, and about how claustrophobic Kim was in that makeup...as well as Sal, the BEHIND DVD stated that "they had to hug Sal a lot; he was very uncomfortable being a chimpanzee."

I'm sure they didn't push Kim a lot.
She was very clostrophobic in the
makeup.  I know she had a stand
in for the test footage.  Her stand
in was bitten by Milo and a breast
plate had to be made for Kim just
in case.  You can't have the star
getting monkey boob bites can you?

I hope so...I have to be honest, I wasn't too impressed with the Iron
Man trailer. It smacks of the typical "Big Explosions and More Big
Explosions" type of action film that I'm usually not too keen
on. Hopefully, they'll prove me wrong. As for "Dark Knight," I'd be
content not to get another Joker film, as I loved Nicholson in the
role and don't really need to see anyone else play him, especially if
(as the trailer seems to indicate) Ledger is just going to imitate him anyway.

You know, I've noticed something about myself in the past couple of
years...as I'm approaching 40, I'm starting to lose my passion for
action films, superheroes and science fiction. I'm a lifelong fan of
all three, but lately...I find I'm losing the desire to immerse
myself in them. As a result, I'm seeing fewer and fewer movies, I'm
hardly watching any TV at all outside of BSG, SG-1 and Lost. One of
those is already canceled, and another has only one season left, and
when they're all done, I don't plan to find any new shows to replace them.

I'm also considering selling large portions of my collection and
being done with it, as I've already done with my entire action-figure
collection. Part of my just wants to have a simpler life
unencumbered with so many hobbies to pursue and so many possessions
to fill my home. The videos and DVDs and comic books I used to
treasure are becoming less and less important to me...there are tons
of books sitting unread on my shelves...I've stopped watching several
shows I used to watch...and part of me just wants to sell the entire
thing and spend more time with my family instead.

You Tube has 2 Dark Knight previews that look legit.  One comes from this link and one looks like someone bootlegged it from inside a theatre.  What gives?  Will Iron Man appear anywhere?

Of course once you have a family with kids whose needs cost more the older they get you tend to cut down on collecting things-narrow your interests so to speak. I've sold a lot of my collectibles on eBay and to friends but there is a core set of items I've collected and owned for longer than I've known my wife (and we've been together on and off for 30 years!) that I will, barring any great financial emergency in my life, keep my whole life and pass on to my kids.

This is just to inform you, they never shot any scenes of the ship
launching or landing. Such things were not even scripted.

Cripes, PLANET barely had a crash landing (all their shots were
interior shots/the camera spinning around showing exterior scenery.)
They never had anything such as miniatures showing the ship in splash-
down mode, so what would make anybody think that ESCAPE, with it's
virtual non-existing budget would afford itself the luxery of showing
    the ship in flight?

Paul Dehn's Final Screenplay , October 28, 1970, for Escape opens
with 'THE EXPLOSION OF ROCKETS as we watch as it speeds away from
camera'. Then the script describes the astronauts watching the Earth
blow up. Later 'We are crashing rapidly into the ocean' and 'The
spacecraft splits the water into churning waves'.Shortly after, we
see the helicopter. It will be on Hunter's site and is a good read--
probably what Marvel used for their adaptation, too.John, Scrolls.

Back then I think it was around $2.50. But $10 is not bad. Most places are $15 these days.

I noticed on The Simpsons movie that they paid tribute to several different films - and maybe it was unintentional and maybe they were just being uber subtle - but there is a scene when the family is running away and this includes a brief sequence of them running through a cornfield.

They also had scenes from Poltergeist, took the piss out of Disney animated films and several others.  A scene involving a ruined Statue of Liberty would have been more blatant (but appropriate given the plot).

As far as my saying things of that nature weren't scripted, I stand
      corrected!

Still, being scripted does NOT equate to it being shot. And the things
mentioned in your post were ceratinly out of the budget of ESCAPE, so
they were almost certainly not filmed. Plus, what you posted never
actually mentions that we see these things happen to the ship. By that
I mean they do not say that they will show the ship itself going thru
these motions, and it would probably been more of the same as we seen
in PLANET, in other words just interior shots/exterior shots yo
      simulate seeing it.

I wasn't really suggesting you were wrong as this script may not have
been the final shooting script--there are scripts that are 'Revised
Final'etc for the tv series, so the whole ship bit may have been
excised from the final shooting script. My personal view is that
the 'live'action footage, of the three inside the capsule, WAS shot,
and then, rather than spend money on special effects to surround it,
cut. That picture of Roddy and Sal is interior and looks like they've
come off a stage, not off a beach and why else would they be suited
up without makeup. Also, if it's the same ship in the TV Series, why
did they bother HAVING an interior, with seats for three, if all we
were going to see was the outside--I think they planned and probably
shot interior scenes. Jiust my humble opinion! John, Scrolls.

Comics series and LOVED Revolution on the POTA! I've been getting back
into it lately (bought the TV series and Cartoon on DVD, better than
      I'd remembered).
The only big problem I have (which I understand many others do as
well) are the continunity problems, understandable in such a massive
series. For me, the biggest is exactly where did Cornelius, Zira and
Milo get the ship they used in ESCAPE?
Looking forward to lively discussions with fellow fans!

I have to agree with Hunter here. With a slight caveat. A few things
will increase or hold their prices. An Original One sheet for Planet
Of The Apes for example.Still expensive and in theory, should hold
it's value. But I believe Apes collecting is at a low. Many items
that should fetch a good return, just don't.I sell regularly on ebay
and once had a shop selling Movie and TV Collectables. The supply and
      demand, like any product, fluctuates.
Trends also impact. About four or five months ago Ape Jig Saw
puzzles were fetching good prices on ebay.At least the UK puzzles of
the TV show were. Now you can get them for £1.00 or £2.00. Same
happened with the British annuals. The British comics have no value
at all and even the Mego's are going around on ebay or selling low.
Many serious collectors are in their 30's or 40's or older. They have
what they want and the younger fan base is smaller and has much more
to spend their ill gotten pocket money on.
Taking into account the value of money way back compared to todays
purchasing power, I think that Apes stuff (technical term) is at
      rock bottom prices. Bargains galore.
IN the 80's something that cost $2.00 would be say $5.00 now, but
you can buy the $2.00 item for $2.50. That is not an increase in
      value, but a loss.
      Buyers market at the moment.

        Brendan,
Right now I'm selling scripts on eBay (not originals of course) and at one time I had all the customers I wanted at 10 bucks each. Now at 5.00 each I can barely give them away. Apparently everyone who wanted these scripts bought them already!
And I've been scooping up original movie and TV photos for a little as 10 bucks each...at one time I couldn't get them for less than 30 dollars!

To answer your question, Milo somehow salvaged Taylor's ship from the lake.

So when did you first become a fan? What was your first exposure to POTA?

I'm with you there.I have sold posters and Lobby cards for way less
than they should sell for.Foreign ( depends on perspective but other
than US I mean) posters do not seem as popular as the US or UK
posters, but even the UK Quads for the 4 sequels can be picked up
cheaply. 8 years ago I sold two UK Quads for £75.00 each.An Escape
and a Conquest. Now someone sold an Escape Quad for £25.00, but I
watched it go around on ebay at least twice. The Quad for Conquest
also on offer for £25.00 had no takers.
These are nice large posters and look great framed.I have them
        myself.
Apes is still bigger business in the US though compared to the UK.
A good new Ape show would be a great boost.
I still can't get over the Unofficial Apes Collectors Guide pricing
a UK wrapping paper at $250 US when it regularly turns up on ebay
for under £5.00 ($10.00) Or a colouring book at $15.00 when you can
        get them at $2.00-$5.00.

I've been on ebay for about 7 years and in the beginning I was making money hand over foot (what does that expression MEAN?) with whatever I sold. Either the economy is getting worse every year (which it obviously is) or I've run out of anything people want to buy. I've purposely held back selling certain items that I know are worth more than I would probably get for them on eBay rather than take what I can get.

The one that looks like it was shot in the theater is fake. It's a clever way to cover up the fact that it looks crappy, but still a waste of bandwidth.

I'm sure the Iron Man footage will appear somewhere eventually. I've heard that there's a few You Tube clone sites, but I haven't really bothered looking for them.

Absolutely. In fact, it's a good thing they DIDN'T do those shots if the
quality of the models was as poor as in the original Planet--the
sinking of the ship is the one shot from the film that really lets it
down.In my opinion, they could have cut that, saved money, just have
Landon narrate it and focus on Taylor's lack of interest in the fate of
the ship, and have a more powerful scene. But what the hell do I know?!

Aboro, I had read somewhere--it may have been in the book "Planet of The Apes Revisited" or something--that the scene was filmed but deleted.

          Hey all, how's it hanging?

Hope this finds you all well. Sorry I don't really speak up much since I was invited to join the group a while back, when I was drawing part of revolution on the planet of the apes for mr comics. I don't have all that much time for keeping up with all it all except for when I'm not working, which thankfully has not been often as of late.

But I wanted to take a moment to let you all know that I'll be in Toronto for TCAF 2007

          http://www.torontocomics.com/tcaf/

and I'll be bringing some of the POTA art with me to sell along with pages from Sea of Read, and my most recent book. If anyone is interested let me know and I can post more info here and a set of jpgs of the pages going up for sale.

          Cheers!

My brother started collecting the Marvel mags on Guam (He stopped
buying them and I spent some 20 years up and down the US East Coast
          before finally finishing the set).
I have to agree with Black Echo's website about the improbability of
three apes with no technology being able to raise Taylor's ship,
much less find and refit the blown hatch (I'd forgotten about that
myself). But I can't buy his "Maddox and Brent came in two separate
ships" theory either; the Presidential Commission only mentions two
          ships, not three.
I've got my own theory, though...

Yeah, those posters are the repros someone, maybe Fox Video, had made up when the 30th Anniversary videos were released back in 1998.  They were distributed to the video stores and such.

Could that ship possibly have had some kind of 'self repair' or 'homing mechanism' of some kind that would have enabled it to get to dry land some how?  The first ship was not damaged that much, it just took on water and sank, Brent's was pretty much wasted.  I don't know, just spit-balling...

Could that ship possibly have had some kind of 'self repair' or 'homing mechanism' of some kind that would have enabled it to get to dry land some how?  The first ship was not damaged that much, it just took on water and sank, Brent's was pretty much wasted.  I don't know, just spit-balling...

original runs (I think we saw the last three while we were on Guam).

Hi.  My name is Zach.  Glad to meet you.

I too have been a staunch APES fanatic since 1968 when the first classic movie was released.  I also have the Marvels, the Adventures, the Revolutions...in addition to all five movies on DVD, the cartoon series and the TV series...you'll find there's a lot to talk about within our group!

As far as the third ship is concerned--and there's been plenty of discussion on that topic--I suggest you check out Christopher Shields' ANSANUAT website.  He has some fantastic material that I know you would enjoy.

Anyway, welcome to this great group!

I've always had my own personal theory for how Dr. Milo was able to find and fly Taylor's ship:

                  • When the ship lost power while sinking in the lake at the beginning of Planet, the ship was going into a safety shut down mode to protect its systems.
                  • The ship didn't sink to the bottom of the lake, underwater currents carried the ship to a sand bar close to shore.
                  • Later, during a period of low tide Milo discovered the now dried out ship.
                  • While exploring the ship, Milo found the flight manuals and mission checklists. By studying them he was able to learn basic operations of the ship. (Remember, most of the systems were computer automated.)
                  • During he last trip from Ape City to the ship Milo discovered Brent's ship and retrieved the missing or damaged components of Taylor's ship, including the hatch.

It is still a leap of logic but this is how I can rationalize it.

Due to the bad weather in the Northeast today, the Lawgiver's flight home has been delayed. Right now our favorite Simian Philosopher is sitting on the tarmac at the Atlanta airport, cursing the pilots and making himself a general nuisance to the flight attendants. So, unfortunately, there won't be a new LESSON this week other than don't trust the damn airlines.

However, there is some good news. There are several new additions/improvements to the Group Website in the One Sheets section. A Beneath Half Sheet has been added to the Beneath page and the Planet, Conquest & Battle pages now includes larger versions of those film's Half Sheets. Also, the Beneath page now features an improved version of the Planet/Beneath Combo One Sheet. (Just in time for the tonight's showing at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica.)

The Group Website can be accessed by clicking the banner on the Group's Yahoo Home Page. Anyone that has a problem accessing it here can visit the Mirror site .

It may seem that POTA items dont have the value they should but that is the case for everything
Up until 10 yrs ago everybody had to pay full retail price to buy collectibles through stores and mail order
but ebay has made all items so easily available that people simply do not and will not pay guide prices anymore
so its really knocked everything back 50-70%
only if a couple bidders find an item at the same time will there potentially be a bidding war to drive prices up

                  Brendan.

                  Subject: My Third Ship Theory
                  .html
First, sorry about using my screen name. Real name's Jeff, as I see
others I'll use Jeff177. Glad to meet you all.

Here's my third ship theory for ESCAPE. It's long, complex and very
conspiritorial but it seems to fit the known facts. I'll post in
                  several parts due to length...

My Interpretation of Ships Seen in POTA, BENEATH and ESCAPE

This is my theory as to what ship Cornelius, Zira and Milo
used in ESCAPE FROM THE POTA. I've bounced this off several other
fans who helped me add to and refine it. It tries to answer every
possible question but it's rather complicated and conspiratorial.
I'm sure many fans won't like it, but this does try to explain
                  exactly what happened.

The following timeline comes from Jim Whitmore's article
OUTLINES OF TOMORROW: A CHRONOLOGY OF THE POTA which appeared in
Marvel Comics POTA Magazine #11 (augmented with material from The
                  Hasslein Curve timeline).

                  1972

February: Astronauts Taylor, Dodge, Stewart, and Landon are launched
on the first Interstellar Exploration flight.
May: All contact is lost with Taylor's ship. The ship is listed as
lost and the crew given a state funeral. Privately, hope is
maintained that the crew is still alive.
November: Astronauts "Skipper" Maddox and Brent are launched along
the same flight path as Taylor's vessel to probe its unexplained
                  disappearance from detection.

                  1973

April: Taylor's ship reappears mysteriously within nearby space. It
lands off the California coast slightly north of San Clemente and is
met by mobilized U.S. Navy Spaceflight Recovery crew. Capsule is
found to be piloted by Drs. Cornelius, Zira and Milo. Events of
                  ESCAPE FROM THE POTA begin.

                  *=*=*

As we saw in POTA Taylor's ship sank in a large lake
somewhere off the remains of New York City. The dorsal hatch was
blown off prior to the ship sinking. I find it inconceivable that
three apes with at best a raft could raise and repair the ship. A
theory that the ship washed ashore and was sealed against water
damage is very interesting but seems highly unlikely to me.
As we saw in BENEATH "Skipper" and Brent's ship crashed in a
man-made dessert again somewhere near the remains of New York City.
The external damage was observed to be quite severe and it seems
highly unlikely that the ship could fly again (if it could fly Brent
almost certainly would have risked it rather than remain on an earth
                  populated by hostile apes).
The ship appearing in ESCAPE is obviously not Taylor's, we
never saw the inside of Brent's. Black Echo's website ANSANAUT
claims that "Skipper" and Brent arrived in two separate 3-man
ships; "Skipper's" crashing and Brent's being found by Cornelius,
Zira and Milo. It's an interesting theory but I just can't buy that
either. So where did this third ship come from? This is my take on
                  that subject...

The truth of the matter is, those of us that are
'real' collectors just have to wait out all of the
'trends and fads.' I know that it is a matter of
patience and persistence until I find the item that I
want in the condition that I want. I am still looking
for 3 blister card figures to complete my Mego apes
                  collection.

                  Subject: Third Ship Part 2
                  .html
                  Part 2

When Taylor's ship Icarus disappears a rescue mission is
mobilized (ignore Taylor's talk of colonization, this was a recon
mission pure and simple), but even this takes six months. This ship
(unofficially dubbed Rescue One) follows the same flight path as
Taylor's and disappears in the same area of space.
At this point Dr. Otto Hasslein is intrigued. Very little
telemetry was received from Icarus prior to its disappearance but
data sent by Rescue One just before its disappearance provides
                  Hasslein proof of his theory.
At this point a secret closed conference is called by ANSA
officials and a few chosen others. Hasslein wants to send another
ship with more and better sensors to record the phenomena. Others
want to send a second rescue ship; the consensus is that Taylor's
ship almost certainly crashed and Maddox's may very well have
suffered the same fate. However, the number one question is: will
the President authorize another costly (and quite possibly
unsuccessful) rescue mission? The committee decides to send another
ship, but without informing the President or receiving authorization
for the flight. This ship will be unmanned with extra on-board
flight recorders and will carry two large external packs with
additional sensors and communications equipment to relay precise
data back to earth. The ship also has a secondary mission, to land
and provide a way home for the six missing astronauts (making the
not unreasonable assumption their ships are no longer functional).
This third ship (dubbed Icarus II) is a prototype of a new
design; externally similar but with an improved drive, additional
shielding and its on-board computer uploaded with data from Icarus
and Rescue One. There are six seats, three front and three rear
(there's no need for hibernation chambers as the ship will
immediately return to Earth). The new equipment and software will
(hopefully) allow Icarus II to withstand the Hasslein curve, survive
a landing and safely return via the curve. The ship has pre-
programmed instructions to wait 30 days after landing. If not
activated by that time it will take off and return to earth using
data from the entry point. It is calculated Icarus II will reappear
some 10-14 Earth days after entering the Hasslein curve.
Icarus II is secretly launched in January 1973, the cover is
that of a replacement military satellite (`which unfortunately
collides with space junk soon after and is lost'). Much data is
received by ANSA before it disappears in the same area Icarus and
Rescue One did. Hasslein and other scientists eagerly study the
data, which provides information which is used in designing even
more powerful engines and for programming the on-board computers of
                  future ships.

                  Part 3

However, Icarus II doesn't quite have the same entry
trajectory as Icarus and Rescue One, thus instead of appearing two
months after Rescue One (at which point Earth no longer exists), it
actually appears in orbit some 12 hours BEFORE Rescue One. Icarus II
starts to follow its pre-programmed instructions, listening for
                  homing signals from Icarus and Rescue One. It receives nothing;
Icarus is no longer transmitting as every system in the ship shorted
out when it flooded and sank while Rescue One is still approaching
Earth and thus is not even transmitting. Icarus II then goes to
secondary programming; assuming this is the area both Icarus and
Rescue One ended up in (within a 50 mile radius) it makes the
nighttime landing it is programmed to do. Icarus II jettisons a
plume of fuel which is ignited, lighting up the sky, and drops
hundreds of flares of various colors. This is seen by the apes but
it interpreted as more of the same hallucinations being sent by
Mendez and the mutants (I assume the mutants were using long-range
telepathy to try and dissuade the apes from invading. It didn't work
as the apes lacked the higher brain functions of humans). Icarus II
lands safely some 22 miles east of Ape City in the Forbidden Zone,
on the opposite side of a large wood and near the Atlantic Ocean.
Normally the apes would send out a scout party but, with the
army ready to march, no one is available. Cornelius, Zira and Milo
see the landing and decide to investigate. There are few pickets to
avoid and Dr. Zaius is too busy to try and stop them.
The three chimpanzee's march in the general direction of the
light show and, just before daybreak, stumble upon Icarus II. All
three are in awe, but eventually Cornelius and Zira identify it as
something similar to what Taylor had described to them (I'm assuming
that, during their long conversation on paper, Taylor made a drawing
of the ship and described very roughly how it worked, including the
                  use of spacesuits).
The trio of chimpanzee's enter the ship. As this is a new
design unknown to the two missing crews a large number of flight
manuals are aboard. These mostly use pictures and drawings rather
than written words to describe ship functions as it was felt that
the astronauts would not have time to read and memorize text. Milo
and Cornelius study these manuals; written simply the genius Dr.
Milo has little trouble understanding them.

Zira realizes they will probably be here for some time. Not
wanting to be stuck with nothing but the clothes on her back she
sneaks back into Ape City and packs a bag with some extra clothing,
a few other items and as much fruit as she can find. She quickly
                  returns to Icarus II.
By this time Milo has pretty much figured out how the ship
works. He and Cornelius are eager to try and launch the ship. Zira
protests at first, but finally agrees. The three get into spacesuits
and Milo presses the `launch' button.
Icarus II takes off and enters a high orbit. The three
chimpanzees are unaware of G-forces and are quickly rendered
unconscious. Following its pre-programmed instructions Icarus II
heads away from Earth to re-enter the Hasslein curve that brought it
                  here.
The ape-onauts wake and Milo tries to get the ship to return
to the planet. He is frustrated by two problems. The first is that
Icarus II is not programmed to return to the planet but to instead
re-enter the Hasslein curve and return home; Milo would have to
override the ship's computer and take manual control, something he
doesn't know how to do. The even bigger problem soon rears its ugly
head; the planet below them melts, explodes and ceases to exist.
They are lucky, Icarus II is far enough away from earth and
close enough to the Hasslein curve that it isn't destroyed by the
blast. However, Icarus II is knocked slightly off trajectory just
prior to insertion. This means that, instead of reappearing some 10-
14 days after first entering the Hasslein curve, it appears some 5½
months later. During this time Icarus II has been assumed to have
been lost along with Taylor's Icarus and Maddox's Rescue One. As
this launch was unauthorized (and unmanned) no public information is
                  released.

                  Part 5

The reappearance of Icarus II catches ANSA totally off
guard. The US Navy mobilizes and recovers the ship; luckily no one
involved with the rescue operation had anything to do with the
original Icarus, thus no one can say `hey, this ISN'T the Icarus!'
And the identification of Icarus II as Taylor's Icarus? Remember,
                  this was a black operation (unauthorized and un-acknowledged);
Icarus II was roughly the same size and shape as Icarus and more
importantly was sending out the same transponder (identification)
signal as Icarus as cover. All this naturally led everyone to
believe (incorrectly) that Icarus II was actually the original
Icarus. You can safely assume that when ANSA got the capsule back it
made damn sure anybody who had seen the original Icarus never got
within a hundred miles of Icarus II. In fact, Icarus II was probably
destroyed soon afterwards to avoid any chance of the deception being
                  discovered.
Hasslein and other scientists eagerly study the flight
recording data, which provide here-to-fore unknown details of the
ship's journey. Again, this information will be used to design new
engines and program the next generation of ship computers.

For a second time ANSA gets lucky. Before anyone can ask any
embarrassing questions about Icarus II Cornelius and Zira state that
they met Taylor, this reinforces public belief that Icarus II is
actually the original Icarus. All data dealing with Icarus II is
purged; all records now indicate that Cornelius, Zira and Milo
returned in the original Icarus originally piloted by Col. Taylor
                  and his lost crew.
And in my opinion the ship carried a fourth passenger; the
Plague From Space. It's my belief that Cornelius, Zira and Milo
brought it back with them in a dormant form. Some nine years later
in 1982 it mutated into the virulent strain that killed the world's
dogs and cats, possibly even being activated/mutated by another
disease brought back around that very same time by another astronaut.

                  *=*=*

And there you have it, my version of who's ship the ape-
onauts used in ESCAPE. As I said, it's quite complicated and
conspiratorial but it does answer most questions.

I don't see any other review of this so I might as well, in the words of the oppressive humans, "TALK!". I admit I was not particularly interested in this because of the distance and I've seen POTA on the big screen in excellent prints so many times. But I went and it was worth it. POTA looked great as always but the good news is "Beneath" looked fantastic. These movies look like they were made today. I'd love to see the other 3 now that they have these great prints from the DVDs. Watching "Beneath" with all it's unique visuals was just incredible. The army marching, the ruined New York, Linda Harrison's tan, it looked like a blown up DVD. But it's film, baby. Of course the masks in the speech scene looked that much worse. Remember "Point Break", the presidents masks? That's what it reminded me of. They looked like "happy faces". Those kind of mistakes would probably be a minus in a wide release for the 40th anniversary but it would be great if Fox could do a limited "Go Ape" release for film buffs.
Also on the bill was Eric Greene introducing the films and doing a Q & A with Bill Creber. Some of the things he mentioned that stick out, he was talking about how small the budget was on "Beneath" and how they had to reuse what they could find. The tube that Brent and Nova walk through, the tunnel? Roddy dies in that in "The Poseidon Adventure". He mentioned some of the mistakes that stick out for him in "Planet", like tracks in the sand from previous takes, or how set-like the sets look to him, especially the interior of the cave. If they did it today they would have backlit it more because the sun is coming from the opening. He said he wanted moodier lighting to disguise that it's Earth. But the studio wanted standard lighting for "safety". Can't have an image no one can see.
Maybe the most interesting thing about this screening was how young the crowd was, they looked about college age. There were people of all ages but most were young. They seemed to eventually get into the movie but they laughed at Heston more than I've ever heard an audience before. Another point for the "camp classic" group. But they did seem to like the movie and respect it.
The theater seemed about half full, maybe a little more and then about half left before "Beneath". The ones that stayed seemed into "Beneath" with all it's faults and applauded when the villain (Don Pedro Colley) died.
I also got to meet Tim P. (tim "ape fan") from North Carolina and that was great. He told me his adventures visiting the locations this week and he couldn't ask for a better conclusion than to see those locations on the big screen. I don't know if anyone else from these groups was there.
I won tickets to see the Doors (aka Riders on the Storm) tonight so it's a great weekend. This is Jeff reporting from La La Land.

I have all those, including ESCAPE's.  I actually think Half Sheets are nicer to display in the home because 1-sheets make the place a little too theatre lobby-ish, and anything bigger than that, well, you better have a big room.  Inserts are nice too, but it all depends on what anything looks like.  Some movie's half-sheets are awful, but the 1sheets are nice.

Yeah, where are the others reporting in.

Anyway, sounds like it was a pretty good showing.  Heston is pretty easy to laugh at.  I remember people even laughed in '68.  I think they were supposed to.  Glad to hear Bill Creber is still talking about APES.  I've been watching the DVDs of the old
"Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" TV show and he was art director on a lot of those, so I'd have asked him about that too.

Anyway, I wish I could have been there, but I couldn't.  I think there's a revival theatre in New Jersey that may show the APES films next year for the 40th Anniversary.  THAT I will try to get to.

Beneath looked like a brand new print. That was the real treat. It
was a high contrast print though, brights very bright, shadows very
dark. It was very difficult to see James Gregory's eyes. Planet was
the 35th anniversary print. William Creber and Eric Greene spoke
                  between films.

No one sheets in the lobby... the theatre was about 3/4 full... but a
very enthusiastic crowd... A great time....

                  A couple of observations:

The first reel change has always proven a problem at every screening
I've been to. Landon says "I'm prepared to die" The end of his
sentence is cut and Taylor's laugh and mimic is a jump cut, ruining
                  the joke.

Beneath, the gorilla's leathers were black in this transfer, every
previous version I had seen before the thx video master, they were
blue. (The original laserdisc version, pre THX, the colors are
                  strikingly different)

I've always heard that Taylor's suit had an ANSA patch, and Brent's
said NASA. Not the case, Brent's says ANSA as well.

Last night was the perfect ending to my "Vacation on
the Planet of the APes"! All week I've been scouting
out locations and taking hundreds of pics with the
hopes of putting together a "Visitor's Guide to
                    POTA".....

Explored Malibu Creek State Park, Zuma BEach/Point
Dume and Century City....I'll make a full report when
I get home.....sitting in the airport now....

It was great to meet Eric and Creber and JEFF K!!!
Jeff had his copy of Eric's book signed by everyone
from Chuck and Roddy to Jane Goodall! A true
                    treasure!!!

The prints DID look great and I especially liked the
lighting in some scenes which Creber pointed
out.....Zaius's office scene was excellent...I noticed
a few things that I had not really noticed
brfore....more art in the museum and Z&C's walls and a
bubbling sink in the vet's office......

THe audience was very responsive and laughed a lot
....not only at Heston's lines but all of the "human
see, human do" type lines.....the "see no evil"
                    stuff....and a big cheer at Ongaro's death....Names in
the credits got applause as well......It was cool to
                    watch with other fans....

I wondered as I watched how it must have felt to have
no idea that either ending was coming....how much of a
shock they must have been....especially everyone
getting gunned down then blown up in Beneath!

Creber was cool......I asked about the original
concept for the spaceship.....was it ever thought of
as part of another ship or what? He said simply, they
did what they needed to see from the script and they
never thought of anymore ship....only what was
needed....he also said it stood at the gates of the
Fox studios for a long time but doesn't know where it
is....He DOES know where the miniature version (used
for the "sinking" shot) is and he's not telling!

SO glad to have this week here and living and
                    breathing POTA.....like I said I'll give a more
detailed report when I get home and settled!

Jeff, I'm really grateful for the review--at least I've got some idea
now of how great that event was. I'm amazed to learn that the
tube/tunnel is where Roddy met his demise in The Poseidon Adventure--
that's one seriously unlucky tunnel! John, Scrolls.
                    >
                    > I don't see any other review of this so I might as well, in the
words of the oppressive humans, "TALK!". I admit I was not
particularly interested in this because of the distance and I've seen
POTA on the big screen in excellent prints so many times. But I went
and it was worth it. POTA looked great as always but the good news
is "Beneath" looked fantastic. These movies look like they were made
today. I'd love to see the other 3 now that they have these great
prints from the DVDs. Watching "Beneath" with all it's unique visuals
was just incredible. The army marching, the ruined New York, Linda
Harrison's tan, it looked like a blown up DVD. But it's film, baby.
Of course the masks in the speech scene looked that much worse.
Remember "Point Break", the presidents masks? That's what it reminded
me of. They looked like "happy faces". Those kind of mistakes would
probably be a minus in a wide release for the 40th anniversary but it
would be great if Fox could do a limited "Go Ape" release for film
                    buffs.

how they had to reuse what they could find. The tube that Brent and
Nova walk through, the tunnel? Roddy dies in that in "The Poseidon
Adventure". He mentioned some of the mistakes that stick out for him
in "Planet", like tracks in the sand from previous takes, or how set-
like the sets look to him, especially the interior of the cave. If
they did it today they would have backlit it more because the sun is
coming from the opening. He said he wanted moodier lighting to
disguise that it's Earth. But the studio wanted standard lighting
for "safety". Can't have an image no one can see.
                    > Maybe the most interesting thing about this screening was how
young the crowd was, they looked about college age. There were people
of all ages but most were young. They seemed to eventually get into
the movie but they laughed at Heston more than I've ever heard an
audience before. Another point for the "camp classic" group. But they
did seem to like the movie and respect it.

Thanks Jeff. Sounds like a great evening for POTA fans. What questions did people ask Greene and Creber?

One question to all who went to the Double Feature, were each of the films better or worse presented on the big screen?

I wanted to ask Creber about the origins of the claw in the museum,
was it an existing piece or was it created for the film, but was
never called on before time ran out.

No, I didn't meet Jeff and Tim, although I recognized Jeff from other
LA ape events, even if he didn't have the go ape shirt on, having
seen him many times before. I didn't even speak to Eric, whom I know,
I was too preoccupied with maintaining what I thought was the best
                    seat in the house.

I love Beneath, it is impossible to put into words how great it was
to have the chance to see it for the first time on the big screen in
a clean print. The people who didn't stay for it, and there were a
signifcant amount of people that did leave, really missed out.

I just hope that there will be a Conquest print struck and screened
sometime soon. Hopefully with the extended version of Battle.

Just as a side note, those of us that went to the Apes screening, had
to miss, at the Egyptian, the sister theatre, a double feature of
brand new 35 mm prints of Journey to the Center of the Earth and
World Without End. I regretted missing them, but the Apes were the
                    clear choice.

Both films are great on the big screen. Better than what, DVD? Definitely. The only problem I had were the bad masks during Ursus' speech. It's even more jarring on the big screen. I don't know about all 5 but if Fox released these two for the 40th ann. I think it would work. They're certainly different from what we get today.

Sounds like you had a great week. I can't wait to see the pics. Please send them when you get home.

One question to all who went to the Double Feature, were each of the films better or worse presented on the big screen?

Jeff, I'm really grateful for the review--at least I've got some idea
now of how great that event was. I'm amazed to learn that the
tube/tunnel is where Roddy met his demise in The Poseidon Adventure--
that's one seriously unlucky tunnel! John, Scrolls.

particularly interested in this because of the distance and I've seen
Those kind of mistakes would
probably be a minus in a wide release for the 40th anniversary but it
would be great if Fox could do a limited "Go Ape" release for film
                    buffs.

                    > The theater seemed about half full, maybe a little more and then
about half left before "Beneath". The ones that stayed seemed
into "Beneath" with all it's faults and applauded when the villain
                    (Don Pedro Colley) died.
                    > I also got to meet Tim P. (tim "ape fan") from North Carolina and
that was great. He told me his adventures visiting the locations this
week and he couldn't ask for a better conclusion than to see those
locations on the big screen. I don't know if anyone else from these
                    groups was there.
                    > I won tickets to see the Doors (aka Riders on the Storm) tonight
so it's a great weekend. This is Jeff reporting from La La Land.

Damn!  That would have killed me!  I'd love to see JOURNEY on the big screen.  That was one of the first Fox films Emil Kosa, Jr. did matte paintings for.  (I'm currently renting the DVDs from "Land of the Giants," which was some of the last work he did in late '68.)

If that truly was a "new" 35mm print of JOURNEY, that makes me think a Special Edition DVD may soon be coming from Fox.

BENEATH really was just a cheap cash-in on the original.  They had some intriguing ideas, but the whole movie was half-baked and looked like something made by a committee of bloody baboons!

Yeah, but "Beneath" still looks cool on the big screen. It also has a loyal following. People like it's bad ass attitude. I think those two would have a successful 40th anniversary run.
