Just as a
side note, those of us that went to the Apes screening, had to miss, at
the Egyptian, the sister theatre, a double feature of brand new 35 mm
prints of Journey to the Center of the Earth and World Without End. I
regretted missing them, but the Apes were the clear choice.
Damn! That would have killed me! I'd love
to see JOURNEY on the big screen. That was one of the first Fox films
Emil Kosa, Jr. did matte paintings for. (I'm currently renting the DVDs
from "Land of the Giants," which was some of the last work he did in late
'68.)
If that truly was a "new" 35mm print of JOURNEY, that makes me
think a Special Edition DVD may soon be coming from Fox.

pesonal favourite of the five.It has its flaws, yes and the budget
cuts certainly hurt it, but there are so many iconic images and
scenes in that film that it just burned itself onto my mind at an

.htmlGood idea, but it's the Gorilla who liked Beneath. The other poor
slob is just some British Tourist hiding out in Portugal.
I was going to remain a closet Beneath liker, but, surprise
surprise, I mostly agree with John, Not new I know. John and I
share similar likes and dislikes. There are some differences. I'm
the beauty -he's the brains, He reads comics - I watch Comics,He's
the diplomat -I'm more a laundromat... but.
Beneath is more an action adventure pic that young uns like.
We forget, now we appreciate quality work over substance. Not saying
Beneath didn't have some quality, but it was more a romp with
soldiers, running, shooting, fighting, Mutants etc. Fast paced and
fun, except for the downer ending.
Planet is cerebral and includes the gravitas of dramatic moments
(see how I try to sound clever!)
Comparing which is the better is fun, but lets not slate Beneath. It
had reductions in budget and is the sequel but it is still a very
enjoyable little film.
A double bill of the two is a great idea.
Those who walked out on the screening of Beneath, shame on
you.Unless you got lucky and she or he wanted to go somewhere else
to discuss the merits of the production values.
Brendan.

I won't shoot you to bits. I agree that BENEATH has some good stuff in it, and in that crazy Sci-Fi way is often more visually striking than the original. Unfortunately, in its totality the movie is a mess, and because of its bleak final it really ends up amounting to a bunch of nothing. In terms of the APES series, you can skip BENEATH, go straight into ESCAPE from PLANET and have not missed much that matters.

Hell, BATTLE has a loyal following, which tells you more about people than it does the movies.
Anyway, I don't know how "successful" a 40th Anniversary re-release would be (It could possibly make a few thousand.), but why should PLANET have to be coupled with any of its sequels for such a thing? Why the hell can't some of you APES fans allow the original classic to stand alone with its dignity intact?

sequels, but it was the history, the diversity, the risks that were

Not me. I was a fanatic right after I saw PLANET for the first time in April 1968.
For me now it too often seems like the original movie got sent off in a spaceship in the very early seventies, crash-landed on the "Planet of Inferior Sequels and Juvenile TV Shows," and has been kept by APES fans ever since in a cage, with a lobotomy scar added.

.htmlI feel that one of the great attractions of Apes is its
diversity. There's enough in there to pique most people's
tastes. There's little I don't like ( the Advenure comics series
mostly was awful).I love the comics--most don't.I love the novels--
many haven't read them.I love the tv series, many don't.I love the
original (who doesn't) and I love, equally, the sequels(on which some
are split in opinion).I even kind of like Burton's take, and really
like the novels that accompanied it.I love the merchandise and entire
Apes package. The recent anniversary edition was devoted solely to
Planet and that's fine, it's a classic in any sense. But the other
four, and the tv series, have never been given the proper 'extras'
treatment and, as virtually its own genre, I think an anniversary
set, done right, with commentary, pics etc, would be wonderful. Why
not have Linda, Mort and Ted do a commentary on Beneath,
Bradford/Eric/Ricardo do Escape, Ricardo and Don do Conquest and
Austin and Natalie do Battle? I know expense is a factor but hell,
how much longer will some of these human libraries be around? John,
Scrolls.

Frankly, I'm surprised Fox has released them with what they have.
We're lucky to have had the Ape head (even if they did screw people

I always thought that was an urban legend. I've heard what you said, I've
heard that the place burned down, so who knows for sure. I figure that if it was
on the rooftop of an abandoned cafe, someone would have claimed it by now.
The thing is, there's potentially a way to track that (and the
Alpha-Omega bomb prop) down, but it'd require someone on the West Coast doing an
awful lot of leg (and road) work.

Over at www.aintitcool.com they have a
listing of 45% off on the POTA Head collection (a 24 hour only sale), I think
from Amazon. That's $98.99. No collection is complete without the cartoons in
inferior quality. Anyway, it's over on the right under "Coaxial". Guess they

.html Hey y'all! I'm back from the Star Trek Convention in Vegas, and believe it
or not, I DID find something that was POTA related! They had a large area
in the dealers' room where different guests were signing autographs. Most
of the guests there had small guest starring roles in the original Star Trek
episodes. Well, I was walking around and came across a small midget of a
man named Felix Silla. He had all these pictures of the various roles he
has played, and he had a pic of himself as an ape, and I asked him about it.
I'm not good about knowing the names of secondary characters, especially
when they have all the ape makeup on, but he played the little ape that sees
Taylor sneaking around when that memorial service is going on and says,
"It's a man!" I was flipping out to find somebody that had been in the
original POTA movie! So, I had to get the pic and autograph so I could
bring it back to share with y'all. I've attached it here. In a couple of
days, when I've downloaded my own pics, I'll post the picture of Felix I
took, as he looks today. Feel free to put either pic in the files section.

Well then you just list it for what you think it's worth as the opening
bid. If it doesn't sell, then you haven't lost that much. Do it when eBay has
one of those listing sales and all you've lost is 10 cents if it doesn't
go.

Pretty sure he was pulling those prices out of his ass. I was actually in
touch with him not too long ago, and he was selling off the majority of his
collection as well. For inflated prices. Makes you wonder if that guide was
self-serving. The first time I went to visit he had some things I wanted to buy
UNTIL he e-mailed me the price list. One thing that sticks out was the $40 or
$50 he wanted for the BENEATH Herald. When I finally got one on eBay, it was $10
and in almost brand new condition. Not bad for a 35 year old promo
freebie.
Chris L.
>>I still can't get over the Unofficial Apes Collectors Guide pricing
a UK wrapping paper at $250 US when it regularly turns up on ebay for
under £5.00 ($10.00) Or a colouring book at $15.00 when you can get them at
$2.00-$5.00. <<

Since posting that message I had a particularly good 'selling week' on eBay
so I am going to follow your advice and list them anyway with a
reasonable minimum opening bid. We'll see what happens.

Yeah, it would be very nice. I'm hoping something will be done for the 40th, but I fear Fox has milked the APES too much already on DVD.

About a year and a half ago I was in a Barnes & Noble bookstore and looked at a book about Hollywood's makeup artists, and it had in it a fantastic series of photos of John Chambers making up Felix Silla as that boy gorilla. I'd never seen them before.

Here they go again. Fox is getting ready to
remake another one from the vaults: "Variety" announced that Roland Emmerich
(maker of Fox's hit science fiction sitcoms "Independence Day" and "The Day
After Tomorrow) will direct a remake of "Fantastic Voyage" (1966?). The
original, about scientists who shrink down and enter the human body, made POTA
possible because of it's box office success. James Cameron's company Lightstorm
will produce, a situation he had with POTA a decade ago but nothing came of it.
In fact, a decade ago Fox approached Emmerich about directing POTA but,
according to Eric Greene, he turned it down because you can't remake a classic.
He did "Godzilla" instead. Personally, I can't stand Emmerich's movies but with
Cameron involved I have hope. I'm more interested in the movie Cameron is
directing for Fox, "Avatar" (reportedly an incredible script). In any case, a
thoughtful "Fantastic Voyage" that makes money could give Fox back the marbles
they've lost when it comes to sci-fi. Remakes of "Invasion of the body
Snatchers" ("The Invasion") and "Day the Earth Stood Still" are arriving
soon.

LIFE Magazine Movie Review
March 1968
Second Thoughts on Ape-Men
By Richard Schickel
When I saw Planet of the Apes a couple of months ago,
I liked itan ingenious, adventurous, humorous,
deliciously, spooky example of one of my favorite
popular genres, science fiction, that was smartly made
and contained a useful moral or two. I should have
trusted my instincts, stood up and proclaimed my
affectionate regard for the thing right off.
Any sensible child, as I will shortly demonstrate,
would have done so automatically. But there are times
when a critic cannot or will not respond as a child,
which is perhaps the worst of all errors when he is
dealing with American films, since they have almost no
art tradition and therefore impose a unique regressive
obligation on those who would try to appreciate them
at their proper level. On the other hand, the number
of true movie entertainments is, curiously, somewhat
lower these days than the number of works that aspire
to the higher things, and one really ought to stay
alert and less stodgy about the genuinely good
low-caste stuff.
Two factors contributed to my sense of guilt about
this error. One was the slowly dawning conviction that
Planet is the best American movie I have seen so far
this year. Considering the competition, that is,
perhaps, faint praise, but the movie is at least
alive. By this I mean that it is alive toand
delighted withits own possibilities. Care is taken
to develop all the implications of its basic
premisethe whole sociology of a world run by simians
is exhaustively laid out for usand there is none of
that perfunctory air that is depending solely on an
oddly arresting gimmick and whose makers lack the wit
or creative energy to do something with it. Even more
pleasing, Director Franklin Shaffner, Screenwriters
Rod Serling and Michael Wilson and their cast are in
no way tempted to let us know that they feel superior
to the fairy story theyre telling. So many of our
commercial technicians think they are better than
their material and try to indicate it to us by
invoking the distancing spirit of camp. Creative
people no less than critics are concerned to keep
their cultural credentials in order, mostly by winking
broadly at us, nudging us furiously in the ribs and
saying, at least by implication, Just kidding, folks,
Im really Shakespeare in drag.
The other, and more important, reason for this tardy
recantation was my daughters response to Planet.
Shes only four, but her buddies down the street liked
the movie so much that they had to see it a second
time24 hours after the first exposureand she was
invited along. Her inner life has not been the same
since. The movie is on her mind and in her mind in a
way that no other movie shes ever seen isout of her
lifetime list of about 30.
Sure, they hooked her with the excitement of a
crashing rocket, the exploration of desert and
mountains, all those hairy scary creatures tormenting
Charlton Heston and chasing him all over the place and
so on. But they also taught her somethingthat
animals, and by implication all creatures different
from her, are capable of feeling. It taught her, she
tells me in her own way, that they can be scared of
the unfamiliar and therefore as foolish as prejudiced
as more familiar beings can be.
I have preached this to her and she has been exposed
to it as she watched bland kid stuff of the
Lassie-Gentle Ben variety. But no one has had the wit
to vivify it by a simple, radical reversal of the kind
we see in Planet of the Apes, where creatures we are
taught to believe are inferior are suddenly so
superior that they have the power to lock up odd
specimens like Heston in a zoo and run a few
experiments on him to test the causes of his obvious
inadequacy.
Yes, I suppose Erika was occasionally scared by the
movie. But what is childhood without a few delicious
cases of the creeps (the violence depicted here is, by
the way, not quite so intense as youll find down at
your neighborhood playground)? And what does a case of
the creeps matter anyway if you learn something
worthwhile from it and it is part of an authentic,
totally engaging experience instead of just a way to
kill a rainy Saturday, as most childrens moviesand
literatureare?
By the way, Erika just wandered by and asked me what
I was doing. When I told her, she asked, Are you
writing about how we gotta see it again? The answer,
of course, was yes.

Early word of mouth on THE INVASION is.... not surprisingly.....
THAT IT SUCKS!!!!!!
Remakes of EARTH STOOD STILL and FANTASTIC VOYAGE will suck too, I predict. Oh, SFX will be CGI "wonders," but a decade after their release people will still be taking about the originals and have already forgotten the remakes (i.e., POTA2001 and Jackson's KING KONG).

As usual they pandered to present day pop culture and pick mostly movies from the last 10 years and threw in a few classics to retain an appearance of credibilty. Missing from the list is PLANET OF THE APES. They also left off PSYCHO and CITIZEN KANE which shows how misguided this list is. >

.html.html .htmlMovie Reviews: 'The Invasion'
While The Invasion may sound like the title of a war movie, it's actually the fourth incarnation of the 1956 sci-fi/horror B-movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in which alien pods land on earth and take over the bodies of humans. "The latest and lamest version" is the way Manohla Dargis describes it in the New York Times. It's "godawful," writes Jack Mathews in the New York Daily News, who suggests that the title ought to be Night of the Living Dud. Likewise Glenn Whipp in the Los Angeles Daily News comments that the film comes to the screen DOA -- "killed by Hollywood conventionality and bland uniformity." And while some critics suggest that the performance of
Nicole Kidman nearly redeems everything else that is wrong about The Invasion, Lou Lumenick in the New York Post will have none of that argument. "The only thing that's frightening this time around is the sheer, across-the-board incompetence of the filmmakers and the hugely narcissistic performance of its leading lady," he writes.

Kevin McCarthy having a bit role). I can't remember another, please

.htmlBad reviews and even worse box office. It only made $2 Million this weekend and it cost around $100 Million to make. The weekend BO champ was 'Superbad' which only cost $20 Million and took in $30 Million. Hollywood needs to stop making all these overblown remakes & sequels and start concentrating on making good, but smaller films.
That is what I think the problem was with POTA 2001. They spent too much money on it trying to make it a big tent pole summer movie. They should of concentrated more on the script and getting a good director for it.
