Well, the Peter Chernin thing is a
second-hand comment from Jane Hamsher's book "Killer Instinct". She was the POTA
producer during the Oliver Stone days and devotes a few pages to that
flick.
I was on the set of "Jay and Silent Bob
Strike Back" when they filmed the cornfield hunt, and I can attest Kevin Smith
is a bona fide Ape fan (the guy with the poster in the new "Die
Hard"). Jeff

You see... This statement was either bullshit, or it tells
you reams about the corporate mentality at Fox, one that's still there.
They don't know shit from ... whatever you compare shit to. And that's
what we ended up with with POTA2001 -- a big pile of shit!
By the way,
I finally got around to seeing LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, and saw the Ursus poster
thingie. It had Asian writing over the image of Ursus that I can only
wonder about the meaning of.

They're out there somewhere. My site is proud to be a PotA2001-free
zone, so the scripts aren't there. But I've seen them around on the
'net somewhere. The Forbidden Zone site, maybe?

Real life always comes first, Bill.
I haven't yet listened to the last episode, I was hoping to have a few
new ones stored on my Ipod ready for my vacation - I guess it will be
a good excuse to listen to all the existing ones over again.
I just listened to an audio book version of Max Brooks' World War Z

D'ough! The estimated take for "The Simpsons
Movie" domestically is $71.85 million, about $3 million more than POTA2001 made
on this weekend exactly 6 years ago. We'll see if it has the 'legs" POTA didn't
have. The Simpsons, like "Star Wars", is a Fox franchise that Fox isn't allowed
to tamper with. Fox isn't even allowed to "give notes" to the TV show.

My point wasn't to knock POTA, it was to
point out, as ga ga as people are for the Simpsons, it only did $3 million more
than POTA after 6 years of inflation and bigger theater launches. I think that's
a testament to the interest people had in a new "Apes" movie. What happened

.htmlI totally agree--the opening weekend for Apes was built on the
tremendous fan love for the franchise and the general public interest
that Apes has always generated. The existing Ape phenomenon drew the
crowds in to Burton's effort and, in a way, you could say that POTA
1968 saved the butts of the studio on POTA 2001, as , on its own
merits alone, POTA 2001 would have crashed and burned. That is the
exasperating thing--Apes, done as Apes, not as Sinbad, works--it has
a truly astonishing box office history. It really took some doing to
get it SO wrong.Imagine what that movie, done right, could have made
at the box office.Along with two successful sequels since then? Fair
enough if Fox wants to make money and revive a franchise--I'm behind
them all the way if they'll only do it right. John, Scrolls.

| Subject: Req: fanfic writer, PoTA/superhero |
.htmlGreeting folks, Rich Handley recomended your list to me, and I am
here with a request.
There's a comic team called the 'Captain Britain' Corps ... doesn't
much matter if you're unfamiliar with them ... basically an alien
version of Merlin has created versions of UK-based superheroes on
every alternate Earth he can find. I can help with details on the
character background if need be. I'm currently editing a fanfic
anthology based on different members of the Corps (some of which are
nonhuman). I am interested in a story which features a superhero
(actually a superheroic ape) interacting with the Apeslayer
continuity.
I want to feature a character named Gorilla Britain, from the PoTA
Earth depicted in the final film, where apes and humans live in
peace. The story details what happens when his Earth is invaded by
Martian apes from an alternate dimension. It may even involve
collaborating with the repulsively-named 'Apeslayer' (who followed
the invaders) and taking down his evil counterpart: Guerilla Briton.
This is an isolated tale so don't necessarily think of it as being in
the 'real' PoTA continuity (hence the incongruity of there being a
simian superhero). I am prepared to write it myself, but it might be
good to see it written by someone who actually has a 'feel' for this
universe.
If anyone is interested, please respond to MxNa@...
Thank you for your time. <.html

I didn't like Ari's look but I liked her.
She was the only one who was developed in any way. She was the only one Burton
seemed to give a damn about. I think her look would've worked if they
specifically said she was protesting the treatment of the humans by looking that
way. But all the female chimps looked like that, even the ones who didn't like
humans, so it got diluted. Attar could have been a good character, the struggle
between tradition and conscience, but that got diluted. If Burton had gone
further with the idea of Estella Warren having the body and Ari having the
intellect, which I think he was trying to do with the "puppy love" stuff, that
might have been interesting (well, if Leo had an intellect). Thade had some
interesting stuff (even James Cameron found him "stunning"). The only thing that
didn't get diluted were Limbo's antics. There's potential but they played it
safe. Fox got what they deserved. No franchise of their own.

As I've said I'm a big Burton fan so I
probably like the movie more than most. For me, if it had to be a bad movie,
which I think was destiny given Fox's attitude, I'm glad it was a bad movie made
by Burton. Because I can enjoy the design, I can enjoy the budget he got because
he's Tim Burton, I can enjoy Danny Elfman's music (if Burton hadn't done it, a
composer of Elfman's stature might not have done it). It seems like the worst
movie ever made to POTA fans, but it isn't. Jeff

story where CAESAR himself becomes the Green Lantern assigned to
Earth (or what is left of it).
We had similar ideas because the "potential" for a simian superhero
operating on the Planet of the Apes (Apeline Two) is ALL there!
I dig the idea, go for it.

I really was expecting to hear the names Zira, Cornelius, Taylor, Milo, and Caesar mentioned...and when I didn't, I was extremely disappointed in it. That would have at least have continued the storyline. This 2001 mess, as far as I'm concerned, wasn't APES the way the five movies, the TV series, the MARVEL comics...and the fantastic REVOLUTION series were. I also need to include the 1990's era APES comics (APE CITY, etc.) Zach

deathbed Elvis) in the spacesuits, without make-up.It's not
conclusive, but, as the visors would stay down for the missing
footage, so as not to spoil the later 'reveal', this pic is probably
evidence that the actors themeselves, not doubles, filmed that
missing footage. John, Scrolls.

From what I understand, Paul Giamatti was
the biggest Ape fan of the cast and the only one to go on record saying he was
disappointed in the flick.

.htmlNot to split too many hairs but that doesn't mean a thing. If you can't see
thier faces under the helmets they could've filmed it with anybody and have
the actors record the dialog later.
I bet the real thing that determines whether or not the real actors were
used was if the shoot was first unit or second unit.
First unit meaning the main unit with the stars and the director. Second
unit being a unit that gets non-star shots and other stuff not directly
related to having the stars, usually they have a special second unit
director. This could include location shots or stunt shots or something they
can get away with not having the main stars on set (which saves money).
So it is equally possible that this could be a second unit shoot or this
could've been a part of the first unit shoot.

Agreed! At least the novel got some attention. With todays
technological advances in film production, the novel can be fleshed
out into a real visual treat without breaking the bank.....so to speak.
It would be nice! Give the fans a reason to support POTA to the extent

I see what you're saying....My feeling are there also, but here's the
problem......POTA is a FOX property from the the first production back
in the sixties. Even though Tim Burton did his "Re-Thinking" of the
property, it is still what it is....FOX's property. This was one of
the reasons George Lucas produced Star Wars the way he did, and kept
it his property and Fox's....And you see what happened, it took off
like wildfire and has a fan base and following that is unreal. POTA
unfortunately, is a lost property so to speak. No respect for it and a
weakened fan base to support it.
It's sad for something so unique to fall to such abuse. But there's
always hope that someone will come along, knowing how to play the
field, and do POTA right! <.html

Since about 1965 when I first discovered my older brother's (incomplete)
set of cards I have been in love with Mars Attacks. When I finished the set
about 10 years later I was in collector's heaven and when the second set of
cards and the comics were released I thought, "life is good!" I eagerly awaited
the release of the film with the same gusto and went the first or second day of
its release to see it. Was I disappointed! Sure the CGI was excellent but why
Burton though it had to be a comedy is beyond me. Great talent like Jack
Nicholson (who was so good in Burton's BATMAN) was wasted in this
lame example of filmmaking at it's worst. However I did buy all the MARS
ATTACKS movie toys-some thing I wish they'd released in the 60's when I was
still a kid.

Would've worked better as a half hour something. It was meant to be a disaster
movie parody but there still has to be more for a feature movie. Characters to

.htmlYes, I bought my ticket as soon as I found out, Planet sold out the
last time it was in the festival, although that may have been because
Heston spoke afterwards at that screening. The last time American
Cinematheque showed planet, it was the brand new, screened once,
beautiful print that was shown at the 35th anniversary screening. I
think I've seen the the same print subsequently at the Arclight, if
it was, the sound was seriously damaged, it was really inferior to
the AC showing.

I remember an interview with the designer of the alien heads. He
was really pissed and keen to slam Burton. He and his team spent
weeks putting together a design of the aliens and then they presented it
to Burton - who promptly changed his mind and said that was not what he
wanted.
So they had to go back and start again
from scratch. He was of the opinion (clearly insinuated) that Burton
is an arsehole.
