All the movies are remastered AND in anamorphic in the Legacy set, AND don't forget, ESCAPE is in stereo and BATTLE is the extended version, right, James?

It doesn't look to me to be Hunter in the photo. Could be Watson. Certainly not McDowall. Anyway, it was probably made just for the film and no other copies were kept.

I guess that gives Roddy two appearances in BENEATH in one manner or

To ask a *really* technical question- did he mention which of the
three tubes it was? Also, I've always been fascinated with the symbol that you
see on the right side of the first tunnel that Brent & Nova come out of
(where the camera pans from left to right, revealing the other two tunnels. A
strange looking squiggle with a circle and one other shape that I can't recall
right now (a triangle perhaps?). It was obviously *deliberately* put there, so

I'm sure someone here with the technical know-how can do a screen cap and
post it to the group files.

What's the name of the theater? It couldn't hurt to start a letter writing
campaign now, and maybe there'd be a great opportunity for that oft-discussed
Ape convention. The problem of where to show the movies would be eliminated (as
well as seeing 35mm prints instead of a DVD) and that's a huge step in
the right direction.

I've seen some of the then and now photos (I believe Scrolls published an

Ditto. I'd love to be able to experience the full impact of those scenes.
Especially in BENEATH, where everything just goes horribly wrong in a matter of
seconds.

The movies will look sharper and cleaner in the Legacy set. I don't how many times and in how many ways I can keep saying that the transfers in Legacy set are better than the old Evolution set, you just have to trust that it is.
However, if you're happy with the Evolution set and don't want to spend the money on the upgrade to the Legacy set (Do I hear that little bird? "Cheap! Cheap! Cheap!"), then by all means just keep watching what you have been.

Burton's Ex Ordered To Revise Lawsuit
Moviemaker Tim Burton has won the first round of a court battle with his ex-girlfriend - a judge has ordered she revise her suit. Actress Lisa Marie Smith
, who has appeared in a string of Burton's films as well as dating the director for nearly 10 years, claims he cheated her out of assets they promised to share together. She sued Burton in December alleging she was tricked into signing a contract with the filmmaker giving up the right to make further claims to his fortune. She also accused a lawyer of secretly acting on Burton's behalf. However, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sanchez-Gordon said there wasn't enough evidence in Smith's complaint to support her claim Burton used fraud to cheat her out of assets. She has 10 days to revise her suit. Burton maintains Smith was given $5 million to sign the contract, which released him from any further claims to his assets. He added if she wanted to rescind the deal she must return the money.

They should have done what Fox did with the original, found a relatively unknown actor to play Klaatu. But Keanu is relatively strange enough to play him. I hope the hacks at Fox are reading the original short story the thing is based on, as it has some intriguing ideas not used in the 1951 film, other than that I'm sure this is another "unnecessary remake that will suck!"

LordT- I suppose that back in the late 60's that could have been what was
imagined as a futuristic looking design for an 'up escalator' sign if you look
at the small square as a person. It'd be a weird looking escalator though. A
couple people here suggested that the arrow is a directional sign and the symbol
below could be pointing to where the manhole exit was. Which brings up the
question if these tunnels were reused from another movie as well.
I wonder if the set directors back then ever imagined that we'd be doing
digital screen grabs and wondering about their work almost 40 years later?

I always thought it was a subtle nod towards BENEATH.
A guy named Jack Martin Smith ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005584/) was
the art director for BENEATH (along with William Creber). In both the old
'Batman' and 'Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea' TV series, I remember seeing
episodes where caves were constructed for certain scenes and thought they looked
somewhat familiar style-wise. Turns out he worked on both of those shows as
well.
And as Arthur C. Clarke once said, if you can't plagiarize yourself, who

When 20th Century Fox distributed Planet of the Apes in 1968, they marketed it to reach the widest audience possible. Up to that point and with a handful of notable exceptions?Things to Come (1936), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), This Island Earth (1955), Forbidden Planet (1956)?science fiction movies were routinely dismissed by the studios and public alike as fodder for juveniles and adolescents. Between a prestige cast (Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore) and its topical themes of creationism vs. evolution, slavery and racism, Planet of the Apes
tapped into a huge crossover demographic. Fox offered schools and religious organizations literature proclaiming the film?s relevance as a tool for discussion on scientific and theological issues. They hyped John Chambers?s inventive makeup work. And in the lofty tradition of Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, and Doctor Zhivago, they first released the picture with an intermission?even though it ran under two hours. (The break came after Taylor barks, ?Get your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!?)
This is the first time I've ever heard anyone else say PLANET had an intermission when it was originally released! I first saw PLANET on April 7, 1968, in a theatre on Long Island, NY and I swear it had an intermission! I guess this is confirmation after all these years that I didn't imagine it.

It must have been a NYC thing.
When I saw it, it had no intermission.
Then again it premiered there, so it
may have been dropped after that and
ran in it's entirety in the rest of the U.S.

I'm not sure how you'd track it down -- the review for the show -- but that quote seems to me to be from Variety's review of the original film, which I think I've posted here and on the Internet Movie Database.
I remember Variety's review of the TV show -- and it wasn't kind. Among other things, they commented that the makeup "so convincing in 1968, now looks absurd," or something to that affect.

I think you have to pay Variety something to look at their old reviews. My library used to have a multi-volume set of Variety film reviews going all the way back to the silent era, but not only did it disappear a few years ago, I've also moved away!

novel definitely says that Variety said that about 'the fabulous
television seres on which this exciting book is based'. Maybe Award
used a little bit of 'artistic licence' on it? Maybe there was a guy
called 'Victor Variety' in publicity at Award Books and he gave them
the quote? I wonder if Variety's first viewing was of The Good Seeds,
the first produced, which certainly had some pretty bad make-ups. To
be fair, with a couple of exceptions, the tv series make-up was very
good in my view--certainly on a par with Conquest and Battle.John,

Must be bootlegs, 'cause there's never been an offical release. As far as I know there's still somekind of rights dispute between Fox and Warners, or DC Comics or somebody. Anyway, if you have a DVD recorder YOU can probably bootleg those DVDs.
Have you checked out the episodes Jeff "Dodge" Burton are in?

'T would be much better to copy such discs with a computer than a
standalone DVD recorder. Aside from losing whatever menus the disc
might have, using a standalone recorder means you're going from DVD ->
Analog -> DVD, which will compromise the picture quality. It's
infinitely better to use a computer and a DVD burner to copy discs, as
you're simply copying the digital data---there's no conversion or
re-encoding going on in that case.

There's only one problem with that, Hunter -- digital compression. If you're recording on a single-layer standard DVD-R or +R (I have no experience with duel-layer DVD burners) then you only have 4.7GB of recording space, and most professional DVDs are recorded on duel-layer discs with over 8 GB of information. In order for the computer to fit all that info, including menus and such, on a 4.7 GB disc, it has to compress it, resulting in poorer picture and sound quality despite the absence of digital/analog/digital conversion.
I've been copying DVDs with standalone DVD recorders (onto 4.7 GB -R and +R blanks) in either the XP or SP mode for years now, and despite the digital/analog conversion, the picture quality loss is minimal, certainly acceptable to my eyes. However, I've watched DVD copies done on computer (onto single-layer 4.7 discs), and the compression is readily apparent on the screen, at least for my eyes. Also, I find most DVD menus to be annoying and would rather just be able to put the disc in and just play the damn thing!
Now, if you're talking about coping on a computer duel-layer DVDs to duel-layer blanks, then this is an entirely other matter, and that in fact is the way to go.

Good morning everyone! Today is our group's 9th Birthday.
I'm sure most of you remember what a heady time it was for POTA fans 9 years ago this week; the 30th Anniversary was being celebrated, James Cameron was doing the remake and AMC was was hosting a Labor Day weekend marathon of the original films with the premiere of the 'Behind' documentary. It was during this POTA renaissance that Dave Pasco founded this group.
I'd like to thank our great moderating crew; Glen, Mark, Dave, John and Donna for all their hard work in keeping this place running these past few year. And thank all of you for making this the best POTA group on the web.
To thank you all even further we are having our annual Birthday Contest. This year is really easy too. No trivia quiz. No hunting for special icons on web pages. Just something fun & simple.
As those of you who visit the Yahoo home page (http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/) know, we usually feature a POTA related picture with a funny caption or word balloon. Sometimes we add funny objects or add characters from the Simpsons or other shows. Anyway, there is currently a pic from Planet with no caption, word balloon or addition. We are going to ask you to come up with that.
Whoever submits the funniest I idea for this picture will win the following prizes:
An ANSA hat

A copy of the POTA Rarities DVD

And a basic set of POTA Archive trading cards

All submissions should be emailed directly to me at: JamesA1102@....
Good Luck!
Now on to other business:
The new LESSON FROM THE LAWGIVER is now available. The Lawgiver is going on sabbatical so this will be the last LESSON for a while.
Thanks to Mark, Dave, Elaine and a special thank you to Glen for their contributions over the last 2 1/2 years. To view the LESSON click on the banner on the Yahoo Home page or use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/LFTL.htm.
Now don't despair, today we are premiering a new weekly group feature, CORNELIUS' JOURNAL. Thanks to Chris Lawless for coming up with the concept as well as to Chris & Glen for their help to launch it.
To read the first JOURNAL entry use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/CJ.htm
Have a great weekend everybody!

Yep. I was assuming these "Batman" DVDs are single-layer discs (borne
out by the low cost for 30 of them and the fact that there are 30 of
them). But everything else you said is true. However, the "digital
compression" artifacts vary greatly in how the compression is
accomplished and how much it has to be compressed. Sometimes it's
readily apparent, sometimes it's not, depending on the software and
procedure.

'Planet of the Apes' returns
Pic feted on 30th aniversary
"Planet of the Apes" celebrated its 30th anniversary with a commemorative screening at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' Beverly Hills headquaters Thursday night.
Outside the theater, attendees were greeted by people costumed as apes from the pic. Along with the pic's stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter, the apes were the night's biggest stars; they all arrived in black limos and were given the best seats in the house.
Screening gave Fox an opportunity to promote the docu "Behind the Planet of the Apes," a behind the scenes expose' on the making of the sci-fi classic, which will air on American Movie Classics throughout September.
Highlight of screening was when Heston's character requested a gun from his benevolent ape friends, even though they tell him he doesn't need it. When Heston loads the gun with pride and passion, the audience cheered and laughed at the appropriate gesture from the current prexy of the National Rifle Assn.

It's
infinitely better to use a computer and a DVD burner to copy discs, as
you're simply copying the digital data---there' s no conversion or
re-encoding going on in that case.

I just watched the "Joker's Flying Saucer" episode of Batman in which Jeff
Burton (Dodge) is featured as one of the Joker's green-garbed henchmen Shamrock
( a rarity to have an African-American in that role) and he has a decent-sized
part and a few lines.
I did notice something interesting during the mandatory climactic fight
scene that was quite unusual but makes sense when you remember what year
this was...never once does anyone lay a hand (or glove) on Shamrock
(Burton) but late in the fight he is sitting in a chair dazed as if he's been
punched. Guess it would have looked REALLY bad in 1968 for the Caped Crusader
and his pals to beat the s**t out of an African-American whether he was in
league with the Joker or not.

I remember popping a tape in and watching the movie.
Those were the days. And they didn't even have a million
previews that were un zappable so you have to set it on
umpteen times speed or however fast yours will get to get
to the main menu. The only good thing about discs,
the Extras. May they always be on a separate disc.
Backups are a pain, because they won't fit and then they
don't work right, or you can't play it on your girlfriends
system, so now you have to risk you original discs.

And the picture quality is lousy compared to simply getting the Fox DVD of the TV series! Why anyone cares about these so-called "TV movies" is beyond me! The titles alone are ridiculous.

My daughter recorded the 2001 APES on a VHS tape for me, and when she was giving me the tape she said,
"Daddy, you're not gonna like this new APES movie. It makes no sense, there's no mention of any of the characters
from the original movies, and the ending is one of the worst that I'd ever seen." Well, she was 1000% correct on all
counts. And I'd heard that they were considering making a sequel to it, too! How awful!

Before I buy a movie I always ask myself, "Am I ever going to watch this?" With the new POTA the answer was "No."

I've recently seen it at Wal-Mart for $5.99. It was in the cutout bin.

You can say that again, Bruce. The 2001 remake stank. Yecch.

If it was the 2 disc edition it's well worth buying for just the
special features. They are far superior, more fun and more interesting
than the movie itself. My favourites are the early make up tests with
Baker's gorillas spouting Ursus's speech from Beneath.
Watching the features you sometimes get a glimpse of what the movie
might have been.
