However, if you are refering to the 'Aged Galen' bumpers that Roddy did for ABC stations showing the TV Movies, they can be found on Kassidy's site: https://pota.v.kassidyrae.com/galenslastappearance.html"

Wow! According to the Google map that theater was on West 51st and Broadway. I'm very familiar with that area (my grandmother lived on West 51st until the mid-70s and I use to work on 53rd for a few years) but never knew there was a movie theater there. There has been an office building there for as long as I can remember.

Thanks. This is a better list than the one EW did. I don't think anyone there has seen any movies made before 1990.

The Capitol Theatre was demolished in September 1968!

Subject: Last Chance pota to Help BAN Primate Testing in Europe
    .html
To: All European Citizens Who Want to Help Primates

This is Urgent because the Deadline is so close!

The European Commission (EC) is currently revising the law - known
as Directive 86/609 - that governs animal experiments across Europe.

86/609 is a hugely powerful Directive that has power of life and
death over millions of animals across the continent - setting out
minimum standards for how and whether animals can be used in
    experiments.

A staggering ten million animals are used in outdated and wasteful
experiments in European laboratories every year. The Directive is
supposed to ensure "the protection of animals used for experimental
and other scientific purposes" but the huge numbers show that it's
    just not doing that.

There is a real possibility that with enough support the EC will ban
all primate tests as part of the revised law.

Written Declaration 40/2007 urges the European Parliament to use the
revision process of Directive 86/609/EC as an opportunity to
establish a timetable for replacing the use of all primates in
    scientific experiments with alternatives.

The Declaration will fall on 7th September and the signatures of
half the MEPs in the Parliament is needed by then.

If you care about animals visit the following website to urge them
    to sign Written Declaration 40/2007.
    http://www.navs.org.uk/take_action/39/0/885/

If you want to do more:-
Please write to the European Commission and ask them to ban primate
tests. To help, a prepared letter can be found at
    http://www.eceae.org/saveprimates/en/action.html"

    The address is:-
    Mr. Stavros Dimas
    Commissioner for Environment
    European Commission
    B-1049, Brussels, Belgium

Please tell all your colleagues and friends in the UK and Europe
    about Written Declaration 40/2007.

I still wouldn't spend that.  I've been renting them (we're talking bout DVDs of "Land of the Giants") from Netflix, and of course making copies.  I'm not that crazy about the show -- it's so ridiculous, but it is fun to see the same chairs used in Taylor's spaceship used in the Spindrift.  I recently found out that the first 12 episodes of "LOTG" were actually shot in the summer and fall of 1967 when PLANET was also in production at Fox.  "LOTG" was supposed to be a midseason replacement show on ABC that would have premiered in January 1968, but it got delayed until September.

Yeah, Fox was doing a lot of sci-fi at that moment. I remember Bill Mumy talking about how great it was being a kid while doing "Lost in Space" and running off to see them film POTA and other stuff. I forget what all he mentioned.

After "Yes, Giorgio" (1982) Schaffner did go on to direct the barely released "Lionheart" (1987), notable as his last collaboration with Jerry Goldsmith (an excellent score, BTW).

In 1980, FOX took 10 episodes of the TV series and edited them into 5
TV movies syndicated to local stations. The original films had been
solid performers for local TV stations so FOX found a way to squeeze
a few extra dollars out of the franchise.

Actually I liked Land of the Giants very much when it was on ABC in 1968. The sets, costumes, and special effects still hold up but the stories and acting? With only a few exceptions like the pilot episode-not really. At almost 200 bucks I balked at first but now that it's cut in half I probably will pick it up. BTW when you get halfway through the first season you'll notice little Barry has a growth spurt all of a sudden. From one episode to the next he's suddenly like 5 inches taller. That was when they resumed shooting months after the first 12.

I'd get it too, but there are several other DVDs I want to get this fall, such as the two-disc special edition of 2001, and a promised all four season complete set of "The Man fron U.N.C.L.E.," which should cost like $200 plus dollars.

PLANET was also in production at Fox.? "LOTG" was supposed to be a
midseason replacement show on ABC that would have premiered in
January 1968, but it got delayed until September.

Never really cared much for the two UNCLE series. My brother loved them but not me.

I'd get it too, but there are several other DVDs I want to get this fall, such as the two-disc special edition of 2001, and a promised all four season complete set of "The Man fron U.N.C.L.E.," which should cost like $200 plus dollars.

Yeah, Schaffner did a couple movies that barely made a blip after "Yes, Giorgio". But I remember "Giorgio" being really hyped, they thought he was going to be a movie star. So the failure was equally overblown. Of Schaffner's last movies, "Giorgio" is the one people remember.

Luciano Pavarotti, the superstar tenor, has died of cancer. Though not a benchmark in either of their careers, Franklin Schaffner directed Pavarotti in the ill conceived 1982 flick "Yes, Giorgio", an attempt to turn Pavarotti into a movie star. It was a notorious flop that ended Schaffner's career on a sour note (though his last movie, "Welcome Home", starred POTA2001's Kris Kristofferson) .   Jeff

          Hello everyone.

I've been lurking for a few weeks around here and have decided to
speak up about a few questions I've had for a long time. Does anyone
know if the cartoon series was originally titled RETURN TO PLANET OF
THE APES or just plain PLANET OF THE APES. The reason I ask is because
I've always thought it was odd that with the 'Return' title the show
never references the earlier stories and instead kind of re-tells
(re-imagines if you would) elements from the movies. Also it stands
out that 'RETURN TO' is in a different, smaller font than the rest of
the title. It's as if everything was completed and then at the last
minute it was decided to call it something else.

Sorry if this is something most around here already know. I've been a
fan of all things Ape since childhood but rarely get to discuss it
          with anyone.

          Thanks,

              Hi, Rod.

The cartoon series was indeed titled RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES.  I thought exactly the same thing when I'd first watched it, that it never mentioned anything about Zira, Cornelius, Taylor, etc.  As for the font...I'd never paid that too much attention.  I have the cartoon series on DVD; I'll have to check that out later on today.

I believe the title refers to the fact that the audience is returning

Well, I believe that the Zira and Cornelius in the cartoon series aren't the same ones that are in the first three movies...the recently-posted superb Hasslein Curve timeline says otherwise, but I tend to disagree.

I think that the cartoon series should have taken place some 500 years or so before the events of the first movie..."Zira", "Cornelius", "Dr. Zaius" and the "Nova" in the animated version should be remote ancestors of the movie versions...and, also, the technology level for the apes between the two series is just as different as night and day.

RETURN:  The apes flew airplanes, had cars, trucks, tanks, jeeps, electricity, television, radio, walkie-talkies, trains, boats, more modern furniture, theaters, camera and video equipment, and an also more modern-looking Ape City.

PLANET and BENEATH:  The apes used horse-and-buggies to get back and forth, or walked.  Their homes were more primitive-appearing.  I guess that they did have photography equipment (as was seen on PLANET after the Hunt) but that camera looked more like early-20th Century type.

What are my Apester friends' takes on this?

                      >I think that the cartoon series should have taken place some 500 years or so

From a timeliner's perspective, the animated series is a real
problem. The series is said to take place in the same timeframe as
the first two films, but as you say, the technology level of the apes
makes that impossible. My timeline avoids the canonicity question,
however, and just places everything where it's said to occur. The
animateds are set in 3979 (some websites have it set at 3479, but
that contradicts what's said in the first episode), so that's where I
have them, even though we all know the series simply doesn't jibe
with the rest of the universe. So it's not that I'm saying they're
the same characters as the Zira and Cornelius from the films -- I see
the animateds as more of an alternate universe -- just that if the
cartoons DID happen, they would take place around the same time as
                      the first two films.

                        Hi, Mr. Handley.

I really have enjoyed your "Hasslein Curve", I thought that it was the most thorough and well-researched timeline that I'd ever read.  It was just that part with the animated series that I thought I should comment on.

A lot of our Apester friends probably won't agree with me--but I believe that maybe there could have been some type of malfunction in the ship that carried Bill Hudson, Jeff Allen and Judy Franklin into the Earth of the future.  The same type of computer "glitch" could have occurred on their time clock, as what must have happened to Brent's ship in BENEATH.  According to Taylor's Earth Time clock, the date he and his crew landed was 11-25-3978.  Brent's clock read 3955, which would have placed him on Earth 23 years before Taylor arrived.  And, according to Zira in ESCAPE, when she was being questioned by Dr. Hasslein, she drunkenly said, "3950...something..." maybe her eyes just hit the date meter at the time it was briefly registering "3950" as it was clicking down back to 1973 after the destruction of the planet and the shock wave hit the ship.  I'm going by the Hasslein Curve date of 3979 for the concluding events in PLANET and the events in BENEATH.

In addition to the major differences in the apes' technologies in the animated series and the original movies, let's also look at the mutants.

RETURN:  These mutants--under the leadership of Krador--had plenty of technology that was salvaged in the underground ruins of NYC; there were elevators shown, computers, generators, all kinds of high-tech equipment that they utilized.  Also, there was no mention (or showing) of the Alpha-Omega bomb, what these mutants "worshipped" looked as if it were a living tree!  The subway system that Hudson and Allen found seemed to be in much better condition, too...especially at the time that they were attempting to escape with Judy Franklin.  They were able to project images and all and put them into "regular" humans' minds as well as apes'.

BENEATH:  Mendez XXVI was the leader of these mutants...but very little technology was shown here, evidently they had lights, some type of fresh-water system to get water up and through that half-melted fountain in front of what was St. Patrick's Cathedral, and controls to raise the Bomb up and down on that launching pad...and they were also able to salvage some type of an organ to make it operable during their "services"...if there were any computers or any kind of generators or whatever, they were hidden...these mutants too were able to project their thoughts and place them in the "regular" humans' minds, Taylor, Brent and Nova, in addition to the Grand Army of the Apes led by General Ursus and Dr. Zaius.

The subway system that Taylor (evidently discovered)...and Brent and Nova explored...was a mess, a lot of it too was half-melted, there was no way a handcar--if there may have been one further on down the tracks--could have traveled through it, they would have had to walked to wherever they were led to; Mendez and company wouldn't have allowed "outsiders" to explore their underground world, that was kept hidden from the above.  I say that Taylor evidently discovered the subway system--or at least some portion of it--after he passed through the illusion, and maybe he also heard the same "hum" that Brent and Nova heard, which drew him to the Cathedral...or maybe some of the mutant guards captured him at some point.

Anyway, these are my takes on RETURN, PLANET and BENEATH.  Please feel free to comment, my friends.

As the creator of the Hasslein Curve (which I haven't had time to
update in well over a year, unfortunately) , thanks!

                        >I think that the cartoon series should have taken place some 500 years or so
                        >before the events of the first movie..."Zira" , "Cornelius", "Dr. Zaius" and

So it's not that I'm saying they're
the same characters as the Zira and Cornelius from the films -- I see
the animateds as more of an alternate universe -- just that if the

                        the first two films.

I don't think the cartoon series took place 500 years before the first
film or anything like that. I think the cartoon is a separate and very
fun re-do of the first two movies. It clearly has no continuity
connection to the movies. In some ways I'm finding as I go back
through the show for the first time in years that the story it tells
is more interesting than I remembered. And some of its ideas are
amazing. I love the higher tech level of the apes, the way the
forbidden zone is treated, the humans being able to talk a bit and the
                        tone as well.

The cartoon show isn't a classic on par wit the first film but it is
darned good stuff. And I see it as the first time 20th Century
                        commissioned a re-imagining.

Rod, a lot of people feel the same...that the cartoon series was possibly part of an alternate universe, which could be true...both Dr. Hasslein (in ESCAPE) and Virgil (in BATTLE) mentioned that "time is like an infinite number of lanes".
I'll admit that the animated version was interesting, however.  Thanks for your feedback.

I'm just ecstatic about these new figures--talk about stepping into a
timemacine and travelling back to the heady days of 1974 when Apes
ruled, Star Wars didn't exist and life was fun. From what I've seen of
the Star Trek figures, we're in for a treat and I can't
wait.Interesting that in terms of comics and action figures over the
past years it's Classic, not Burton, Apes that Fox is licensing.Maybe
we're near the time when Fox will feel the stink has died down from
2001 and we can get back to Classic Apes with human aspect, green,
orange and black clothes, glyphs, funny boots and the best damned look
that any franchise ever had.I can't believe that our Mego chums are
                          returning!!! John.

                          Hey Rod,

                          Welcome to the group!

I'm old enough to remember the Animated show when it first aired in 1974. It was always titled "Return to POTA". I imagine they were trying to differentiate it from the live action series that aired a year earlier.

Thanks Melinda. It is interesting that Boulle once considered POTA one of his minor works and now it is one of the two novels he is most remembered for.

What a shame. He was a great actor and I always liked Aboro better than Urko. Thought he was a more menacing character.

I wonder how much they'll retail for. Hopefully, they won't be as expensive as the Sideshow figures.

I am not sure yet but I would assume they'd go for the helmeted one.

                          .html
I recently acquired the Presskit for "Battle" and
                          found these interesting bits......

                          BATTLE PRESSKIT NOTES

Noah Keen’s car was broadsided by a Cadillac as he
was leaving the set. He suffered bruises and a few
                          broken teeth.

Sam Jaffe was originally cast as Lawgiver but didn’t
want to shave his beard. Huston had no problem doing
                          that.

Roddy : “The first of the series was shot in the
summer and the heat made us perspire, which in turned
worked on the spirit gum, which in turn forced the
reapplication of the adhesive—which in ITS turn worked
on the skin. The rest of the films were produced in
the winter, but in “Battle” I caught cold which was a
                          charming experience.”

There were remnants of Roddy’s “How Green Was My
Valley” set on the ranch when they filmed.

Natalie: “I suppose that it isn’t popular in this day
of women’s lib but I assumed a deferential posture
when in company with the males. When I played a scene
with Roddy McDowall, my husband in the film, I walked
a little behind him with shorter steps. When important
decisions were being made I sometimes dropped my eyes
                          or turned my head away.”

When J. Lee Thompson heard of a survey that his Ape
City set at the 20th Century Fox ranch was being
considered as a possible site for a proposed
television series, he observed wryly, “I wonder if
they’ll want it when I get through with it.” He then
proceeded to blow the whole thing up.

When the gorillas are chanting “Ape shall never kill
ape”, one of the gorillas had an incongruously squeaky
voice. Thompson was convulsed, but he quickly
recovered, ordered the particular gorilla to remain
silent and got on with the shot.

From Heather “Doctor” Lowe’s bio: “Heather’s costume
looks like it was made from potato sacks and it
successfully conceals her 36-23-34 figure artfully
disposed along her five-foot-five figure carrying 111
pounds. Her hair and makeup don’t destroy her face,
but they don’t do anything to enhance it either.”

The casting director, Ross Brown saw Paul Williams on
the Tonight show and thought of him for Virgil. They
called him in to audition and he was signed
                          immediately.

Austin Stoker was cast after the first choice backed
out. He auditioned over New Year’s 1973 and on January
                          2nd was filming.

Paul Williams described the film this way: “It’s a
                          morality tale – with bananas.”

Claude Akins figures that his death as Aldo was par
for the course. He estimates he has come to a
deservedly violent end in about two-thirds of his 42
feature films and about half of his 142 television
                          shows.

During filming, a group of the film’s extras, attired
in masks and costumes, adjourned to a nearby saloon on
their lunch hour. Sitting at the bar sipping a
martini, one of the pseudosimians noticed the
                          bartender staring at him.
“What’s the matter,” demanded the patron, “haven’t
you ever seen a gorilla drinking a martini before?”
“Oh, no, it’s not that,” apologized the embarrassed
bartender. “It’s just that most of the ones we get in
here prefer a twist to olives.”

The Apes TV Series was,is and ever shall be my favourite tv series
ever.I love the credits, the look, the music, the sets, the
locations, the cast, the scripts, everything.I've never experienced a
series that so managed to burn its' way onto my imagination and I
don't care what purists say, there's a lot of us Apes fans out there
who adore the tv series. The TV Guide cover is now my background pic
                          on my pc--thanks! John, Scrolls.

                          HELLO APE-HEADS,

Only if possible, I need a screenshot from ESCAPE:

Towards the end of the movie, after Lewis and Stephanie gave their last
farewell to Cornelius, Zira and Salomé (at that point believed to be
                          Milo Jr.).
The sequence in which Cornelius is walking near the pumpjack, and a ray
of light hits his face (he was watching the arm of the pumpjack moving
                          ABOVE him).

I would like to see that screenshot.

                          HUGE THANKS !!!!!

Not to be a downer, but has anyone SEEN the prices for the Star Trek
retro figures? $36.00 for a set of two, and there's only been one set so
far (second set comes end of November, and the third the end of January
08). That's very little product in proportion to a pretty steep price.
Seems to me the Star Trek retro figures were announced quite some time
ago (anyone remember for sure?), and this is all that's been done with
it? Can you imagine the cost if they reproduced one of the playsets?

                            I find that scene artistic.

No, it's not that. It's a sequence in which CORNELIUS is walking
ahead of ZIRA (and Salomé), and at a certain point he watches the arm
of the pumpjack in awe, and a ray of light hits his face. It's some
seconds before he turns his back and hurries up Zira to move faster.

I think the problem was that the series didn't last long enough. Back then magazines needed long lead times. Even 'All in the Family' which was an instant top ten hit didn't make it to the cover of TV Guide for six months. 'Cheers' which ran a decade later didn't make to the cover until mid-way through its second season. The POTA series was only on the air for less than 4 months.

TV Guide is was an independent publication at the time. And like most magazines that rely on newsstand sales for circulation, what's on the cover had an impact. So higher rated shows would make it to the cover sooner and more often. Although CBS was the #1 network at the time, it still had limited clout in getting it's series on the cover unless they were hits.

I just opened the DVD special edition of THE SAND PEBBLES, and to my
surprise there are miniature reprints of the lobby cards inside.
Fantastic Voyage didn't have them, but Posiedon Adventure did. I wonder
what the criteria is that some fox films merit this, and some don't. I
would have much rather had lobby card reprints in the Apes reissues,
than the Caesar head. It's not mentioned anywhere on the packaging,
does anyone know of any other Fox films that have the reprints?

Fantastic Voyage didn't have them, but Posiedon Adventure did. I wonder
what the criteria is that some fox films merit this, and some don't. I
would have much rather had lobby card reprints in the Apes reissues,
than the Caesar head. It's not mentioned anywhere on the packaging,
does anyone know of any other Fox films that have the reprints?

I'm not sure what else has them.  I also bought THE SAND PEBBLES and POSIEDON ADVENTURE.  I think there are others with them.  They are "mini" lobby cards and are not reproductions of the original lobby card sets.  Of course, I'd like to see such a thing done with PLANET, but I'd especially like to see images I haven't already seen a thousand times.  All I can say is write Fox and let hem know what you like and want.  Eventually they will re-issue the APES films, but probably not until they get around to releasing the older stuff on Blu-ray.

I wonder what the criteria is that some fox films merit this, and some don't.

I wonder that myself.  Little Fox does makes much sense.

High resolution scans of the lobby cards of all 5 films are available in the One Sheets section of the Group website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Misc./Stuff/OneSheets.htm.

Everyone is free to copy them and print out for their own collections. I would recommend using glossy photo paper.

The closest it came to cover status was one issue had
an article about the reporter visiting the POTA set.
The cover however was given to Michael Landon of
"Little House on the Prairie" cause that had only been

Well, bang goes my conspiracy theory! When the first Apes movie aired
on tv over here, it was big news and even claimed the cover of TV
Times--a pic of Heston and a smaller pic of Cornelius.I vividly
remember buying that and, as I left the shop, dropping it, face down,
in a puddle. It survived relatively unscathed, but it was one of those
youthful nightmare episodes that still lives with me! John, Scrolls.
