I tend to agree. The final scenes with Aldo is some of the best ape acting in the series.
Most people tend to think of Claude Akins as Sherrif Lobo but he was really a very good character actor.
I recently rented the DVD of 1964's THE KILLERS in which Claude Akins appeared.
The movie starred Lee Marvin and Clu Gulager. There's a recent interview with Gulager on the disc in in it he talks about Akins. He and Marvin had a scene where they had to rough-up Akins. Gulager says that before they did the scene he thought Akins was a lousy, wooden actor. He had to punch Akins in the gut, and he does the punch -- pulled, of course -- and he says Akins doubled over and when he came up he had tears in his eyes. Gulager says he realized then that the guy could really act.
Akins rarely got good parts in his career, but when he did he was very good, but I wouldn't call General Aldo a great part. I think Akins' makeup could have been better and his leather outfit was too tight, but he's OK. I mean, what did he have to work with? I also think the last scene with Akins in BATTLE is the POTA films at its silliest.

Exactly my point. She was overlooked.
The actress that did win that year did so for a film that also featured Maurice Evans.
Yeah, and that actress would have been a funny chimp too!
I think Hunter was cited by a New York Film Critics board as one of the top ten actresses of 1968 for her part in PLANET.

Journal, read all of them so far, and fount them really enjoyable. I
would like to see journal entries be longer, but I'll take what I can get!
I agree with James that having more journal entries available for
reading at one time would be fun. I also must second the idea of one
of the students sketching the ruins and what they find.
How about using the pigeons as a story device so that another line of
entries can be the messages that Dr. Cornelius sends back to the
Academy? Presumably the pigeons are there for a reason, let's start
using them! Or are they there only for emergency purposes?
Great stuff, Chris!

Just click on the banner on the home page or use this link: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/CJ.htm and scroll down.
As far as the pigeons, unfortunately the Gorillas ate them...Just kidding they do play an important part later in the story. You'll just have to stay tuned.

I thought you were affectionately mocking the 70's Marvel comics style.
This doesn't strike me as an 'Action' scenario - more of a
psychological drama. Please don't inject action just for the sake of
it. If it serves the story, fine - but not just purely to grab
attention. Ron Harper felt the TV show made that mistake.

I always viewed Aldo and the gorillas of Battle as childlike. I think
it was always implied by the sequels that the gorilla was somewhat
brutish and backward, all brawn no brain, particularly at the time of
Battle - that's why there are gorilla adults in the classroom.

Maybe they can explain that new one.
I've looked high and low for it's origin,
but I can't find it. It's not even a scream
really. More like a guy who's been gut
shot. It used to be on Howard Stern a
lot. He's bellowing with a hoot and holler
like he's been stabbed with fondue skewers.
It's usually followed by a body drop sound.
Any ideas on that particular sounds effect?
It pops up as often these days as that
staple of the industry the Wilhelm Scream
had in the past, maybe even more so.
That and that Mortal Kombat Scream.
But this is usually preceded by a gun shot.

All of the sound effects in PLANET are old stuff from the Fox Sound Department. I hear the same gun and rifle shots in Fox westerns from the fifties. (I think the sound "foleys" in later Fox films of the sixties and seventies started when they started recording them on magnetic tape in the early fifties.) I also hear the sound effects of like the spaceship crash landing in episodes of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." I think all the stuff was used again and again until the era of STAR WARS and Dolby Sound required bettering all of it.

This one shows up on radio too,
so it must be part of a standard
Sound FX pack that's licensed by
the stations. I'll stack it down
someday. I want to say it's from
Taxi Driver or one of the Godfather
pictures. but I can't be sure where
it's from really. It's funny as hell
though, especially with the body
drop after. It was used randomly
a lot on Stern, or in conjunction
with, "It's over Johnny. It's over!"

I would like to know if anyone has/knows where I can buy a landscape
poster of the final beach scene of POTA(1968)? My brother is a huge
fan and I would like to surprise him for his birthday if possible.
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,

Never seen or even heard of one.
But maybe because it gives the
ending away. Remember that
T-shirt? It gave away the all
the surprise endings of films.

As Most of you, I'm sure know, Roddy made some real stinkers
over the years. One of them was on last night. I hope some
of
you caught some of it. It was one of the, if not the, worst martial
arts movies ever made called, Circle Of Iron. It has some Conan
reject wandering around bumping into various incarnations of
David Carradine in search of Zetan (Christopher Lee) It's so
bad
it's almost good. Almost! Don't ask me why Eli Walach is in a
jar of oil in the middle of the desert. No doubt a nod to an
even
worse film Fillini's Satyricon. Which I must say was crap and
was also on this weekend. I never like the pretentious art
house
rubbish. That film never held my attention, and after forcing
my
self to watch it I can see why. On review of it said that it
was
prescribed to him by his shrink, and I quote, "Of course I'm not
suggesting that, in and of its self, a movie would cure anybody
of anything." Well it sure cured me of wanting to watch Fillini
anymore. It certainly rivals Breathless as most overrated crap
of all time. Anyone else have any films on that list to avoid?

.htmlCircle of Iron (or 'The Silent Flute' as it was known here in the UK)
is actually one of my favourite movies. It wouldn't make my top ten
but would probably manage a top 100. I'm delighted to learn I'm not
the only person in the world to have seen it!
Story by Bruce Lee & James Coburn, fantastic locations (Israel, I
believe) and evocative music it at least tried to be something other
than the 'I must avenge my (insert family relation here)' style of
Kung Fu flick. Lee's intent was to try and teach the viewer that
martial arts wasn't just about hitting people.
I think the Eli Walach character was there to teach Cord how pointless
it was to bind yourself to vows that stop you from enjoying life - at
least that's how I understood it.
It also features a duel with talking monkeys and as we all know any
movie that features talking monkeys can't be all bad (unless directed
by Tim Burton).
I can certainly appreciate how Circle of Iron wouldn't be to
everyone's taste but in my humble opinion there are far worse things
out there - 'Fright Night 2' springs to mind.

.htmlDave- I completely agree with your thoughts on CIRCLE OF IRON. Here's
what I wrote about it a few years ago.
"The film is exciting, funny and at times very thoughtful. There are
lines of dialog here that I'm already quoting to my friends simply for
laughs but also because they contain a bit of wisdom. The movie has
often been criticized for not being a full-blooded action film but
that was never the intention. The action scenes are well staged, with
an emphasis on the reasons for the fight and not just the ass-kicking.
This makes for a more satisfying series of battles and makes the
journey we're following seem dangerous as well as enlightening. I
guess the audience for this film is pretty narrow: action/martial arts
fans with the patience for dialog and a loosely structured plot. Of
course, the history of action films could almost be summed up as
'plotted loosely or not at all' but actually listening to dialog does
seem to be too much to ask of a lot of folks. That's a shame, as this
film has much going for it and is only strengthened by the
conversations between the characters."
Here's the full review of this overlooked and often maligned film.

It'll surprise nobody who knows my taste to know that I've got this
one on DVD in my collection and really enjoy it. It came out in a
lovely digitally remastered widescreen edition a couple of years ago.
I was going to get David Carradine to sign my copy at an event here
but he looked thoroughly miserable being there so I didn't bother.
Like Dave though, I certainly understand that not everyone's going to
enjoy this one.

Tvshowsondvd is reporting a rumor that Roddy
McDowall's series from the '80's, "Tales of the Gold Monkey" might be on DVD
next year. It was kind of a cash-in on "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (like
"Battlestar Galactica" tried to do with "Star Wars"). With a new Indie Jones
movie next year, the theory is that it would be a good time to put out the whole
show in a season set ( 20 episodes and the movie opener). For the link: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Tales-Gold-Monkey-Rumors/8315

Here's a bit of Fox sound trivia for you: the roaring engine sound that the
spaceship make upon reentry at the beginning of PLANET is the same sound used
when the Batmobile was fired up in the 60's TV series (when you'd see the
flame shooting out of the back). Also, I could swear I hear the Batmobile engine
"whine" a bit right at the scene when the camera starts rotating
upside down and then starts panning across the ground right before the
landing.
One of the things I love about BENEATH is that Leonard Rosenman was
involved in the creation of a lot of the sound effects- most notably the Mutant
mind noises and the drone/hum sound sculpture that plays while Brent & Nova
are following "That Hum!!". To the best of my knowledge, they've never been used
anywhere else.

>>All of the sound effects in PLANET are old stuff from the Fox Sound
Department. I hear the same gun and rifle shots in Fox westerns from the
fifties. (I think the sound "foleys" in later Fox films of the sixties and
seventies started when they started recording them on magnetic tape in the
early fifties.) I also hear the sound effects of like the spaceship crash
landing in episodes of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." I think all the
stuff was used again and again until the era of STAR WARS and Dolby Sound
required bettering all of it. >> <.html <.html

For my own amusement, I tried to come up with a list of films that I
actually walked out on they were so bad. Pretty much right at the top was Zach
Braff's 'Garden State'. Needless to say, they'd all be on my
avoid list. But for stuff I've actually sat through, here's a few off the
top of my head:
Mary Shelly's Frankenstein
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Breaking the Waves
Art School Confidential
Anything Quentin Tarantino had anything to do with- writing,
directing, acting, producing, "presented by", etc...
Spider Man 3
Batman & Robin
that crappy sap fest with Kevin Costner and Paul Newman (what a waste of
talent)
The Bride of Frankenstein (unbelievably, there are some serious film
scholars who think that 'Bride' was superior to the original)
The Good Son
Village of the Damned (John Carpenter's version)
Chasing Amy
Endless Love (featuring our own Guv'ner Breck)
There are many, MANY more unfortunately.
BTW, looks like Don Murray is actually doing something again:
The old boy just turned 78 this year. Good on him, I say. Right up there
with Charles Bronson doing 'Death Wish V' when he was 72.

Subject: Re: [POTA] Re: (OT) Wilhelm Scream You're welcome, Zach. Fox loved that noise in the 60's. On the 6 CD-set FANTASY WORLDS OF IRWIN ALLEN (disc 6) they have a 2-minute version without any background noise. Fun to play VERY LOUD on your stereo! That stock "engine noise" was also used for the Jupiter 2 in Lost in Space, the Flying Sub in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and even the Time Tunnel once or twice. Wow! You know, until now, after reading your post, I hadn't connected the two...the Batmobile and the spaceship reentry sound...I'm going to have to re-watch PLANET over the coming weekend, thanks for the trivia, Chris! Zach -------Original Message----- -- Date: 10/23/07 20:51:01 Subject: [POTA] Re: (OT) Wilhelm Scream
Here's a bit of Fox sound trivia for you: the roaring engine sound that the spaceship make upon reentry at the beginning of PLANET is the same sound used when the Batmobile was fired up in the 60's TV series (when you'd see the flame shooting out of the back). Also, I could swear I hear the Batmobile engine "whine" a bit right at the scene when the camera starts rotating upside down and then starts panning across the ground right before the landing. One of the things I love about BENEATH is that Leonard Rosenman was involved in the creation of a lot of the sound effects- most notably the Mutant mind noises and the drone/hum sound sculpture that plays while Brent & Nova are following "That Hum!!". To the best of my knowledge, they've never been used anywhere else. Chris L.
