Fifty dollars is not a bad price for this model it's 10 inches long and has an interior.

I don't think that's new, rather a re-release of the Wilco kit from a
few years back. (<http://www.goingfaster.com/icarus/allthings.htm>) I
have one (unbuilt) and it's very rough around the edges. Some parts
are eggshell thin, others are way too thick (some are both!) The
interior is a waste if time and very inaccurate.

If it's anything like my version I'd file it under for experienced and
dedicated modellers only. If I'd had the chance to examine what I was
buying first I would have walked away. On the plus side it is pretty
cheap.

Heya ...

The drone/hum in "Beneath" was created with a ring modulator. I came
cross an interesting little bit about it in a book about musical
effects (mostly for guitar, but for other instruments, too). It
includes an interview with a guy named Tom Oberheim. He's famous for
building synthesizers, but early on he was making ring modulators:

"In early 1969, the word got around about my ring modulators enough
that I got a call from a movie composer named Leonard Rosenmann [sic],
who wanted to use the ring modulators on the film score for 'Beneath
the Planet of the Apes.' So one day I took one of my ring modulators
with a mike, amp, and speaker to the music scoring sound stage at 20th
Century Fox and set it up. When the orchestra took a break, several of
the members asked me about the ring modulator, and three of them
actually placed orders! So I was in business." ("Analog Man's Guide to
Vintage Effects," by Tom Hughes, (For Musicians Only Publishing,
2004).p. 47)

Oberheim's ring modulator design was bought by a company called
Chicago Musical Instruments and sold as the Maestro Ring Modulator.

Offhand, I don't recall any ring modulator sounds in the musical score
of the movie, but the hum and drones are definitely ring
modulator-type sounds. Maybe those sounds were created by processing
orchestral instruments through the ring modulator?

There's some more info. about ring modulators here:

Hi all,

Looks like Yahoo got a little flukey again the past couple days and
didn't send the POTA Digest to me. So if someone else who subscribes to
the group via digest format could forward #'s 3798 and 3799 to me, I'd
appreciate it. No worries if multiple people send them to me- that's
easily enough fixed.

Thanks!!

According to all available records "The Liberator" never aired during the series network run. A few people claim to remember seeing it but have never shown any proof that it did air in some parts of the country.

Of course there are those who claim to remember delete scenes from the films that no one can find any evidence of, the Gorilla army marching past the ruins of the Radio City marquee is one example.

While I believe that everyone is sincere in these claims, what they are really relating are false memories. They only think they saw "The Liberator" in 1974 or the Gorilla army/Radio City scene in Beneath. I've had the same thing happen to me. I remember to this day a scene where the Gorillas were hunting and captured an elephant. I now know that that scene with never a part of the script or ever filmed.

I was not around to witness the original airing. However I am led to believe that the episode did not air in the US.

Yes all available evidence says that "The Liberator" did not air in the US on CBS in 1974. I never saw it until the early '90s on the SciFi channel.

A few people have claimed to have seen it in 1974 on CBS which led to the speculation that it was only pre-empted in part of the country. However, no one has ever provide proof that it aired.

While I don't doubt the sincerity of those making the claim, I believe their memories are playing tricks on them.

No, James, it's true.  The Gorilla army actually did pass the Radio City Music Hall marquee.  That is where they encountered three of the remaining mutant heads--Caspay, the Fat Man (Adiposo) and the Verger of the Cathedral...and they were gunned down on orders of General Ursus.  I can't understand why that was cut out of the DVD...as well as there also was longer footage of Taylor's final confrontation with Dr. Zaius.

When I saw the movie in July 1970 I was with my brother and some friends from the neighborhood...unfortunately, my brother and a couple of the friends are now deceased, and the other friends live out of town and don't have Internet access...otherwise, I'm sure that they would have vouched for me.

    But it's the truth.

Wow- very interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing David!!

Initially the hum/drone is all sound sculpture, but once Brent and Nova step out of the tunnel and start walking through the ruins (where you first see the New York Public Library) you can hear processed orchestral instruments.

It kills me that was left off the FSM soundtrack for BENEATH. They wanted to include it, but the request for the tape came back as missing/lost. And when you consider that all the mutant sound effects were locatable (not to mention the original score), you'd think that everything would have been kept in one place.

I'd love to see Leonard Rosenman interview for Simian Scrolls one day. What do you say Dean-O?

Didn't someone recently post a link to a You Tube video where someone was giving a tour through the park? The tree where the gorilla got knocked off the top of the cart (while he was fighting with Brent) was shown as I recall.

I think that is just his demeanor. Years ago when I was a district
manager, I pulled up to my Tarzana store, and saw what I thought was a
homeless guy sprawled on the ground by the entrance. I approached to
tell him to move, then I saw it was David Carradine, he was waiting for
family inside... He didn't look too happy then either....

Leonard Rosenman is not going to be interviewed by anyone anymore.

Wow- very interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing David!!

Initially the hum/drone is all sound sculpture, but once Brent and Nova
step out of the tunnel and start walking through the ruins (where you
      first
see the New York Public Library) you can hear processed orchestral
      instruments.

It kills me that was left off the FSM soundtrack for BENEATH. They
      wanted
to include it, but the request for the tape came back as missing/lost.
      And when
you consider that all the mutant sound effects were locatable (not to
      mention
the original score), you'd think that everything would have been kept
      in one
      place.

I'd love to see Leonard Rosenman interview for Simian Scrolls one day.
      What
      do you say Dean-O?

      >>Heya ...

The drone/hum in "Beneath" was created with a ring
      modulator. I came
cross an interesting little bit about it in a book about
      musical
effects (mostly for guitar, but for other instruments, too).
      It
includes an interview with a guy named Tom Oberheim. He's famous
      for
building synthesizers, but early on he was making ring
      modulators:

"In early 1969, the word got around about my ring modulators
      enough
that I got a call from a movie composer named Leonard Rosenmann
      [sic],
who wanted to use the ring modulators on the film score for
      'Beneath
the Planet of the Apes.' So one day I took one of my ring
      modulators
with a mike, amp, and speaker to the music scoring sound stage at
      20th
Century Fox and set it up. When the orchestra took a break, several
      of
the members asked me about the ring modulator, and three of
      them
actually placed orders! So I was in business." ("Analog Man's Guide
      to
Vintage Effects," by Tom Hughes, (For Musicians Only
      Publishing,
      2004).p. 47)

Oberheim's ring modulator design was bought
      by a company called
Chicago Musical Instruments and sold as the Maestro Ring
      Modulator.

Offhand, I don't recall any ring modulator sounds in the
      musical score
of the movie, but the hum and drones are definitely
      ring
modulator-type sounds. Maybe those sounds were created by
      processing
orchestral instruments through the ring modulator?

      There's
some more info. about ring modulators here:

The scene with the Grand Army of the Apes led by General Ursus and Dr. Zaius in front of what was once Radio City wasn't in a comic book.  I'm still sure I'd seen that.

The cave opening that Brent uses to enter the subway station ruins in
BENEATH was indeed shot in the Malibu Creek Fox Ranch. I think Veetus
would agree. Exactly were that was, who knows? But, you can tell by
the look of the rock that it's the Malibu mountains, besides the
prevoius shots are the ranch, so why would they travel all the way to
the desert to get just a couple shots? (Of course, I wish they had!
They especially should have done the gorilla army entering the airduct
tunnels up at the Red Rock Canyon location rather than at the Ranch.)
I believe the so-called Malibu hills are very old volcanic remains.

Thanks to Brendon and James....That was very touching (and interesting in the side story of Liz Taylor meeting Sybil Burton for the first time.....)
Roddy seemed to be well loved.....wish I could have met him.,...

Aw...wish I could have dressed up in an ape costume, but I don't have any of the makeup!!    I could easily sew a chimp outfit for myself though if I had to.  Does anybody in this group own/use simian makeup for fun other than halloween?  If you do have the makeup, does it take forever to put on, and do you need to have an extra makeup person help with the stuff?  We had a costume party at work and I dressed up as Queen Nefertiti.

William Windom did *not* play Trelane, but he was in an episode of
"Star Trek." Windom played Commodore Decker in "The Doomsday
        Machine."

Trelane was played by William Campbell.

Another film that Roddy is in that I LOVE, and is not available on DVD,
is the critically panned SCAVENGER HUNT. I don't care what anyone says,
it is one of the funniest movies ever. Great ensemble cast, and it also
contains one of my favorite jokes. When Roddy's group steals a toilet
from an upscale hotel, and are confronted by security who ask "Why are
you taking the toilet?" They pretend to be repairmen and state "We have
to check the timing in the turbo flush!"

        Speaking of Trelane . . .
An interesting side note.  This name did not
exist before the birth of the daughter of a friend
of my mother's, who lived in LA.  She visited the
set of Star Trek and got her picture taken with
Shatner and Nimoy and not too long after that
her name turned up as main character in the
Squire Of Gothos episode.  I imagine there
may have been a child or two named Trelane
since then, but you'd have to look hard for them.

Tvshowsondvd is reporting a rumor that Roddy McDowall's series from the '80's, "Tales of the Gold Monkey" might be on DVD next year. It was kind of a cash-in on "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (like "Battlestar Galactica" tried to do with "Star Wars"). With a new Indie Jones movie next year, the theory is that it would be a good time to put out the whole show in a season set ( 20 episodes and the movie opener). For the link: http://www.tvshowso ndvd.com/ news/Tales- Gold-Monkey- Rumors/8315 . May all your monkeys be gold. Jeff

I just watched the Fantastic Journey episode last night with Joan Collins and I must say Roddy was the best part of the show! Of course in those days Joan wasn't bad to look at but watching the kid in the series writhing on the floor as he was being poisoned to death was a little too much.

Exactly. I think in order to find the specific location, you'd have to look for the same rock formations from when Brent and Nova had gotten off the horses and started running. Anyone here a licensed pilot?

One of the weird changes made from the original script. There's no logical reason that the Army would march across the Forbidden Zone and arrive at a spot that *wasn't* in the Forbidden Zone but near an Ape outpost. I always presumed that was changed for budgetary reasons. Plus, the underground set shows the air duct (the middle one with the bright light at the end) that presumably leads back to the surface as Brent and Nova are walking by it.

The video I saw showed the tree and the path next to it. I'm not sure how the guy in the video knew, but it was definitely the same location.

I can VIVIDLY remember two scenes from the 1976 CBS airing of BENEATH that are obviously imagined: one where Caspay and Adiposo are walking around saying "Adults to the cathedral, children indoors" repeatedly (which makes no sense because the message was supposed to be a "public thought projection"), and another where the gorilla army audibly gasps when they seen the above ground ruins of NYC (Chrysler building, etc).Actually, I guess that's more of a modified memory than a false one.

**** Yeah, but anyone with an eye for the movie can tell that the
Gorillas are superimposed over the Music Hall in the picture you're

Never seen the sequel, but for the first time in years I watched "Fright
Night" a week ago. It was on the big screen and from a new print, so it
looked great but there's no disguising that the years have not been kind to
it. In fact, every aspect of the movie is pretty much garbage (but in an
enjoyable way) with the exception of Roddy, whose performance is the best
thing in the film by a long, long, long way.

And while we're on the subject of Frankenstein - I wouldn't say Bride was
better, but I'd definitely go as far as saying it's equal to the original
              though.

This is sad. I haven't been around much, but if Wendy is still
around, she might share some about Washoe. I think it was Wendy who
spent some time there observing the chimps (and the humans).

Anybody that has the 92 POTA card set featuring all 5 movies with
behind the scene cards, knows what I'm talking about... "Scenes we
never saw" shows Taylor in 2 scenes that were edited out of the first
movie. These never before scenes takes place on his run before he
delivers his famous line "Take your stickin' paws off me..." My
question is, does anybody have this lost footage??? I have lots of
rare item footage to trade that I have collected over the years, like
Roddy on sci-fi's "Ape Week" and Roddy, Chalton and Kim on segments for
AMC's POTA Marathon. I have many other interviews and segments to
trade for anyone who has this lost footage of "Taylor's Flight."

I figured that since many POTA fans had Lost footage from "Battle"
before it was released, maybe someone has this Lost footage from the
first movie as well. I'm a huge Apes fan like I'm sure many here are,

Somewhere in the FILES section there should be a contact sheet with scenes of Taylor fleeing the apes that were edited out.

**** The reason that the BATTLE footage was so readily available
before the DVD release of it here in the States is because the longer
version of the movie was available on Laser Disc in Japan, and some
collectors here bought that LD set from overseas. Add to that the
fact that BATTLE in it's longer form aired on TV quite often. Both of
those factors are why the "lost" BATTLE footage was easily obtained.

As far as "lost footage" from PLANET, don't count on seeing any of
that. At this time, I believe the only available "lost" stuff from
PLANET is found in the NATO presentation, which is available on the 2
DVD set of the BEHIND documentary. There's the NATO stuff, and then
there are a few dailies and out-takes with a bit of odd stuff on
              there too.

My guess is that the shot on the card you're referring to is just
that, a shot from the film, just as the shot of Zira and Lucius being
stopped by the Hunt Club is a shot and the pregnancy footage exists
on a few shots too. It's not like INKWORKS got access to a cut of the
PLANET film and was able to take the Taylor shot from it. ****

To me, Frankenstein suffered from the same problem as Dracula,
it didn't have a great soundtrack.  Dracula had virtually no music
in it at all.  But that something you can't say about Bride.  Nor
can you say it about POTA.  The music was an integral part of
the storytelling.  Maybe the soundtrack composers should go
on strike for a bigger cut of Internet sales as well.  They deserve
a lot more credit than they get.  Except John William.  His
stuff, though effective, is very trite.  The Boston Pops wouldn't
even play it.  They were supposed to and walked.  Harsh!

I'm not sure if any fans have deleted footage. There are some stills availabe but I've never seen any actual footage of deleted scenes.

The restored scenes from Battle were originally included the TV version syndicated in the 70s & 80s as well as on the Japanese laser disk version.

The original FRANKENSTEIN is better than BRIDE in the sense that's a
near perfect, though now dated, shocker. A kind of blueprint on how
you make a monster movie, and Karloff's Monster was never more
affective than in the first film. BRIDE though is a more complex and
              sophisticated work of cinema art.

Never seen the sequel, but for the first time in years I watched
              "Fright

Night" a week ago. It was on the big screen and from a new print, so it

looked great but there's no disguising that the years have not been
              kind to

it. In fact, every aspect of the movie is pretty much garbage (but in
              an

enjoyable way) with the exception of Roddy, whose performance is the
              best

thing in the film by a long, long, long way.

And while we're on the subject of Frankenstein - I wouldn't say Bride
              was

better, but I'd definitely go as far as saying it's equal to the
