Very true, we have no choice but to change to a new format, when a
new one takes over. My point is, a new format won't take over unless
there is a good reason. Video Tapes for DVD= Good reasons, especially
now that we can record on them... Laser Disc didn't allow this, plus
they were too big! Super VHS for Regular VHS= Only offered a small
upgrade compared to Regular VHS, wasn't worth it! I think (Blueray)
may be like replacing Regular VHS with Super VHS.... Can you even
record on them???

I'm also a fan Hunter of "Lost In Space." I've been watching the
season 2 boxsets, as you know they released two sets each for season
2 & 3. Also love "Star Trek", just didn't get it on DVD, but watch it
on TV Land almost every day. LIS is aired on TV once a week on
another station along with LOTG and Voyage. All are good shows, well
I like them!

Somewhere I'd read that the lost footage from ESCAPE had been issued on a Laser Disc from Japan as well.
I figured that since many POTA fans had Lost footage from "Battle" before it was released, maybe someone has this Lost footage from the first movie as well. I'm a huge Apes fan like I'm sure many here are, and will be open to trade anything Apes with other fans here. Reply to this message and e-mail me if you are interested in talking about a trade or if you know of any info on how we can find any edited footage from the POTA movie. Thanks!
**** The reason that the BATTLE footage was so readily available before the DVD release of it here in the States is because the longer version of the movie was available on Laser Disc in Japan, and some collectors here bought that LD set from overseas. Add to that the fact that BATTLE in it's longer form aired on TV quite often. Both of those factors are why the "lost" BATTLE footage was easily obtained.
As far as "lost footage" from PLANET, don't count on seeing any of that. At this time, I believe the only available "lost" stuff from PLANET is found in the NATO presentation, which is available on the 2 DVD set of the BEHIND documentary. There's the NATO stuff, and then there are a few dailies and out-takes with a bit of odd stuff on there too.
My guess is that the shot on the card you're referring to is just that, a shot from the film, just as the shot of Zira and Lucius being
stopped by the Hunt Club is a shot and the pregnancy footage exists on a few shots too. It's not like INKWORKS got access to a cut of the PLANET film and was able to take the Taylor shot from it. ****

And my point is that the good reason is money. When the studios
decide that they've milked DVD for all they can, they'll stop
supporting it to make everybody re-buy everything on BluRay or HD DVD.

If any "lost" footage from ESCAPE existed on the Japanese Laser Disc,
it would have surfaced by now. It's not like anyone who has the
Japanese LD set is setting on it saying "We'll keep this stuff for
ourselves".
If any ESCAPE footage existed, don't you think it would have become
available from the LD owners when the "extended" BATTLE from Japan was
starting to surface?
The Japanese LD of BATTLE has been out for a long time, and if anything
else was on any of those LDs, it would have been circulated by now.

Did anyone else find the following scene familiar?
Matt Parkman and Nathan Petrelli. Two friends, (well, allies at least) are tricked into fighting
one another while under the influence of an illusion - supplied courtesy of a telepathic

Some of the fight takes place in a jail cell and we even get to see one of the characters with
their face pretty much peeling off!
What do you think - mere coincidence or not-so-subtle reference?

I have the Japan laserdisc and they are the same transfers as the
initial American laserdisc releases. The extended Battle transfer was
supposed to be released in the U.S. but sales of Escape and Conquest
on laserdisc were so dismal, and the Battle transfer (with the
extended footage) was so bad, Fox opted not to release it in the
states. They subsequently THX remasterd and released Battle on
laserdisc, but I don't know why they opted for the theatrical
version, instead of extended on that release...

That's what I said, I'm just glad that you, as an owner of the Japanese
Laser Discs could confirm that for me.
The only thing I ever heard about the Japanese LD of ESCAPE was that it
is supposed to be in *stereo*, and on one of the other groups I "think"
someone said the Goldsmith score is available on a seperate track so
you can listen to it independently from the film. I don't know if I
believe those claims either. Can you confirm or deny them?
(BTW: Both of these rumors are about the first release of the Japanese
LD of ESCAPE, not the later issue that I think has the same jacket as
the "EVOLUTION" DVD box set DVD and it's LD release of the film from
the same time.)

I passed on the "Evolution" laserdiscs once I saw Battle's running
time. The initial U.S. Escape release, and the Japan release are in
enhanced stereo - chase surround which is, if I'm correct, fake
stereo (someone who is more knowledgeable may want to elaborate.) I
just checked to make sure, there are no isolated Goldsmith tracks on
either the U.S. or Japan disc...

I would hazard to speculate, trying to stay close to Boulle's original
conception of the simian civilization, that all that Cornelius knew of
the natural world, outside of his own limited experience, he got from
books, or in the case of the films, scrolls. These scrolls would be
very ancient texts and, in fact, would be orangutan reinterpretations
of the surviving works of man. The ancient orangutans would have done
very much like what human monks did during the Dark Ages with earlier
Roman and Greek texts, only in this case with the substitution of
everything human to that of the simian. In this way, the wiser of the
orangs, perhaps the scholarly disciples of Virgil, could preserve some
of the knowledge gained by man and yet protect future generations from
culture shock if they knew the truth of their origins. So, Cornelius
and other academics, and the original film seems to imply that the
chimpanzee intellectuals were a relatively new phenomenon, having been
allowed to study some of these texts would have knowledge of other
animal species even though the creatures may no longer exist.

DAVE ASKED:
"The ape evolved from a lower order of primate, possibly

Going by the licensed stories, here's an excerpt from my
timeline:
In addition to the Great Apes (chimps, gorillas and orangutans), gibbons
also gain sentience. Planet of the Apes #13: "Terror on the Planet of the Apes
The Magick-Man's Last Gasp
Purple Light Show" (MC-c)
Some mandrills attain intelligence as well. Urchak's Folly #3: "Chapter ThreeThe Savages"
(AC-c)
So do the baboons in Europe. It's unclear if the same is true of North
American baboons. Ape City #1: "Monkey Business" (AC-c)
Other members of the primate kingdom-Âbaboons, Barbary apes
(macaques), gibbons and lemursÂ-are less open to accepting Ape City as
the capital of the world and settle, instead, in the outlying areas.
Among the chimps, orangutans and gorillas of Ape City, these other apes
are considered “foreigners.” Return to the Planet of the Apes episode #8: "Screaming
Wings"(BB-n) NOTE: This information comes from the novelization of the
episode, entitled Return to the Planet of the Apes #3: Man, the
Hunted Animal. Presumably, “foreigner” status also applies to
mandrills, who are featured in Urchak's Folly as being sentient.
As fan Dave Ballard points out, this might account for the existence of
the Ape City army.
An air of aristocracy forms among the Great Apes, who think of themselves
as above monkeys and other primates. The word “monkey” becomes an
offensive racial slur among the apes. Escape from the Planet of the Apes (FX-f)
In Europe, as in North America, chimps, orangutans, gorillas and baboons
attain intelligence. Ape City #1: "Monkey Business" (AC-c)

John, Scrolls.
Mike and his sister are the heirs to the Liquid Paper fortune.
His mother and his high school science teacher from Thomas
Jefferson invented it. So he didn't have to have the band as a
cash cow. He was the one who wanted to fire Boyce & Hart
and write their own stuff. That flopped. He was also the
lone
hold out on the reunion tour and then played a couple shows
and bailed again. I saw the Six Flags tour of Dolenz, Jones,
Boyce & Hart, arguably the least talented two Monkees,
and it was still a good show. Yeah, Mike is a new money
snob. Every year he holds a symposium at his compound
in New Mexico and tries to some the worlds problems. And
since the world still has problems maybe he'd be of more
use back in the band -- even a fake band like The Monkees.
Anyway, no Nesmith didn't change his mind when it became a roaring
success as you call it. In 1986 he was going to do the 20th
Anniversary Tour when they were scheduled to do a few dates in the
major cities (NYC, Dallas, LA, etc.) but when it turned into a whole
tour, he dropped out because he was running a company at the time
(Pacific Arts). He didn't do the other tours either for pretty much
the same reason (plus he was involved in a huge lawsuit with PBS over
video distribution which he eventually won.)
However, in 1996 he did record with the other guys for their 30th
Anniversary album called "JUSTUS"(in which the guys played and wrote
everything on the CD, which even 1967's "Headquarters can't claim).
He also did their tour of the UK in 1997 to promote "JUSTUS".

If thefilms came out now there would most likely have been a game released with each film. I always thought it would be cool to have a game that brought the player through each one of the five films. Or maybe a game based on the TV series where you could choose to play as either Virdon, Burke or Galen.

This week is Thanksgiving in the US. A Holiday where we celebrate stealing land from Native Americans by overeating and watching football on a weekday rather than just on Sundays.
I've always wondered what Holidays the Apes had. We know they has 'Aldo Day' but I'm not sure that's what they called it. I would bet they celebrated the Lawgiver's Birthday (most likely a three day weekend when all the wagon dealers had big sales to get rid of last year's models).
Since the Ape culture was based on the Human culture that preceded, did they Apes have their own versions of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Passover, Fourth of July, etc.?

Every Christmas I display that issue and it was the inspiration for my own POTA

it's only "official" Ape story I can think of that touches on a

big celebrations for the Apes..in the first instance they would gather

It's a remote link, but did I once read somewhere that The Liberator
episode of the tv series had been intended to be a Thanksgiving
weekend episode, hence the 'you sure didn't make history John Smith'

the Native Indians call Thanksgiving, I wonder? Maybe 'D'oh! Day'?

Ha! You beat me to it--I was just going to say that. Yep, their
Santa is Travellin' Jack, a rotund, jolly ape who rides around on a
horse-drawn cart full of gifts. Each year, Jack travels the world,
seeing sights and collecting items of interest, then visits Ape City
to share his findings. I know this isn't a popular sentiment, but I
love that ol' Adventure Comics series.

Now if this is the future of the next format, I do see a reason for it! I do agree with Hunter, his point being, it's a money issue in releasing a new format, I just wanted there to be more of a good reason, like dvds replacing video tapes..... The Blueray/HD DVD holds alot more space, the Star Trek set takes advantage of this, and in reply to Bobby (cuddybuddy69)...... Did you see the new release (Nov 20) of season 1 of the original STAR TREK series??? The HD DVD format boxset just released the 1st sea with new interactive pop ups & effects!!! All the episodes were remastered with effects as if the show was released today. Maybe one day soon we will see something like this done for all 5 Ape movies & the TV series, how cool would that be??? I copied the page from Amazon, which also has a 8 minute trailer for this new dvd set. If it doesn't work here, just go to Amazon:

When Lucas messed about with Star Wars,'improving' the special effects,
he tore the soul out of it for me because, suddenly, you were really
noticing the special effects as special effects--my suspension of
disbelief was gone and the illusion shattered.I, personally, wouldn't

Agreed. I have to say, though, that the Star Trek episodes (which I
know you wouldn't watch anyway) are very tastefully done (at least the
ones I've seen). Nothing like the changes that Lucas made to the Star
Wars films.

I've seen some of those remastered STAR TREKs and I don't like the new
CGI effects. They sometimes actually make the spaceships look MORE
fake. They're too well-lit for outer space or something. Anyway, for
someone my age, who saw these things when they were new, part of the
appeal of watching it now is so that I can time-travel back to the
sixties. To look at something that isn't the way it was back then
really spoils things.
As far as HD-DVD goes, I don't think that format will win. I'm betting
on Blu-ray, and it's still going to be nearly another two years before
I'll want to buy a player, and I think it'll be that long before we see
POTA in that format, and I wouldn't count on any remastering of effects
shots.

Yeah, this I agree with. Clean up the movies as much as possible but
otherwise leave them alone. As much as I'd like to see CGI put the
hatch back in place when we first see the exterior of the spaceship in
PLANET, or make the final matte shot look better, or a redo of the
not-so-great matte painting of a ruined NYC in BENEATH, it just
wouldn't be the same movies.

Yeah, I can see your point, but my problem with it is more related to
how the live action part of the shot had to be duped and how there's a
flutter as the camera pulls out of the zoomed in dupe. If they still
have the separate film elements that made up that composite shot -- I'm
talking the first generation negatives of Heston and Harrison on the
beach, and also the matte shot, they could digitally combine them now
and it would look a lot better. In fact, I wouldn't be too bothered by
that.

By today's standards I'd agree - but had you seen it in '68 your jaw
would have hit the floor along with everybody else. Back then, very
few cinema goers knew what a matte painting was, these days pretty
much everyone does.

Just checking out APE items on ebay, I see there are a few nice rare photos of Linda Harrison, one photo makes me question, was she considered for the role of Morticia in the television show "The Addams Family" in the mid 60's?? I never heard of any parts she went after and didn't get, besides the role of Sheriff Brody's wife in the movie "Jaws", anyone know of any others?

My guess is that she wasn't considered for that role. I mean she would
have been around 18/19 when "The Addams Family" debuted in 1964. Far
too young to be a believable Morticia (even with makeup).

was written with Roddy McDowwel in mind from Trelane. But, the "powers that be" wanted someone with a huskier build to play Trelane. It was believed that the combination of Trelane's foppish Liberace style demeaner combined with an actor of a slight build who already seemed a bit effeminate would equal gay.
I heard this from the guy that played Trelane himself, William Campbell. I used to go to Star Trek conventions in the 80's and he was at one I attended.
As much as I love William Campbell and how he played Trelane (and later on Captain Koloth) on Star Trek, I would've loved to have seen Roddy McDowwel's take on him. I would've loved for Roddy to have been on Star Trek in some capacity period.
I had a chance to see the theatrical release of The Menagerie.
It was quite good. The updated music and FX shots were
good but still true to the original. I'll enjoy seeing them
in place of the original shows. Don't know about
buying it though. Roddy is on an episode of
Combat right now. Shades of The Longest
Day. Strange he didn't pop up on Trek,
being familiar with working under makeup.

I never heard of any parts she went after and didn't get, besides the role of Sheriff Brody's wife in the movie "Jaws", anyone know of any others?

I got a bit of a giggle out of this article. If you remember, I have
been researching the whereabouts of the chimp actor that played Baby
Milo in Escape. I really think she may be the "aunt" caregiver in the
facility at Bastrop.

Does this exist or has it been lost by the studio? My one big wish is
that this would feature as an extra on any further DVD/HD releases.
Surely the studio must have this version somewhere or at least could
offer an alternate, branching ending that cuts that cobbled final
speech out even if the more violent footage has been lost? Would
appreciate any info regarding the differences in this version. Does it
include an opening where an escaping gorilla is shot (this features in
the script, and novelisation/comic adaptation)? I've also seen a still
of this scene in Greene's excellent book.
Cheers in advance

The cover is by a Japanese lady, Mayko, who is an astonishingly
talented artist--see www.mayko.net for more. I saw her work in a
magazine and she very kindly agreed to do us a cover. It's different
and it's also a bit of a nod to the Japanese love of POTA.It's not a
tribute to a 70s song about masturbating--that's next issue. John,
Scrolls.

That's interesting, John. Did she say what
she thought about POTA? I assume she likes it or else you had to auction off
your Ben Stiller collection to pay her.

Think you might be interested in turning it into an Audio Drama <or at least scripting a few?> and me and my co-horts at www.brokensea.com will turn it into an audio drama? The new episodes of my POTA audio drama should be going online in the next 2-3 weeks, and I ahve been wanting to do more with the apes beyond my planned Beneath POTA AD.
lets all go ape !!

Ape Chronicles #23 had a really good merchandise review by some fruit
called Maxwell. In that issue is a copy of an advert for a
book, 'Ghastly Giggles.Planet of the Apes Goes Bananas!!!'.
It's 'loaded with stills' of 'those adorable apes' and has 'some of the
funniest ape dialogue you'll ever hear'(this was pre-Burton,
obviously).I've never seen this tome--anybody got it and can they
share? John, Scrolls.

Subject: Kass' Site
.html
I've got to admit, I take Kass' site for granted--it's like a mother
lode for info on the TV Series that I just dip into regularly, without
thinking about the time and effort that goes into maintaining it.So,
thanks Kass. One of my favourite bits is the newspaper clippings. One of
these mentions how the series had an initial guaranteed 13 episodes,
and would then be reviewed for ratings.I've often wondered how we
managed to get our fourteenth episode. The last one, Up Above, has the
feel of an end of term event--the shooting is sloppy--you can see place
markers on the floor early on--and Ron's hair looks longer and lighter
to me.It all feels a bit more relaxed and lighter, as if this was the
end, but how come this one and not 'The Liberator'? John, Scrolls.

No doubt about it--she's hot.

I find everyone funnier than Stiller. I find Dick Cheney funnier than Stiller.
