I'm new to this group, but I have been addicted to POTA since the
early 70's, and I bought this booklet when it came out, I think it
was around 1974. My memory is it had some very unique behind the
scenes stills with captions added. I think it was about 4" x 6" in
size. Unfortunately, it was lost when I left home for college years
ago. I've never seen one since. According to the Sausville
collectibles book, I think he placed a value of $175.00 on it back
in 1998. Good luck finding one. <.html

more corny and lame than anything. Believe me, if it had been anything
worth keeping, I'd have kept it.

I remember it coming out more like in '75, but its main value was in
seeing some stills from the movies, mostly from BATTLE unfortunately.
$175 bucks seems ridiculous to me. I'd bet if you kept checking eBay
it would turn up eventually.

.htmlJohn, I wish I knew why why why we had fourteen. I wish more that we
had forty. Or so.
So, why do you take the site for granted? Because, stop that. But you
know what, that's fine, really, so long as you enjoy it. I know I do.
The site is all about the contributions I get from people who want to
share and who love the tv show as much as I do. Good stuff:)
So when are you guys going to talk about the new Scrolls and tell us
what we can look forward to?
James, I've tried to answer your email twice but it's bouncing. What up?
My address is the same, though. No mail bombs, puleez;)

"Flickipedia -- Pefect Films for Every Occasion, Holiday, Mood, Ordeal,
and Whim" by Michael Atkinson and Laurel Shifrin. One of the chapters
in the book lists the best "Summer Movies" and PLANET is on it.
Because I thought what they wrote about POTA was so dead on I'm
reproducing it here. Let's hear what you think.
"PLANET OF THE APES (1968) -- Before there was 'the Summer Blockbuster'
(a label that now describes a studio's box-office hopes rather than a
film's actual success), there was the matinee movie, meant as a respite
from summer heat for kids with nothing to watch at home (in the days
before videos, DVDs, and the like) and brainpans overflowing with
Marvel comics, Aurora models, and backyard G.I. Joe scenarios. This
beautiful, conceptually fearless piece of American pulp remains
resonant and unforgettable, but it also invokes memories of an entire
decade of summers (what with its many sequels and frequent rereleases)
for a lucky generation of kids, whose cerebellums are permanently
branded with the image of Charlton Heston kneeling on the beach before
the wrecked Statue of Liberty. Ah, to be lost on this 'desert planet'

Cornelius crosses to Zaius, and takes a small book bound in black
leather from the breast pocket of his tunic.
ZAIUS
Read it to him: the twenty third Scroll,
ninth Verse.
Cornelius thumbs through the book, finds the citation and reads aloud:

| That's a great question, Rory, I've wondered the same thing myself. Yes, I think that it would've made much more sense for Brent and Nova to have been watching them enter their house from a distance, and then went in through a back window. For that matter, I have a couple of questions that also are BENEATH me as well: 1--Did Taylor teach Nova how to ride a horse? Because she certainly was keeping up with Brent pretty good during that chase through the forest near the entrance to the subway station's ruins.
2--I probably have asked this before too, but how the heck could Brent and Nova entered the "Queensboro Plaza" subway station...walked a short distance down the tracks, entered a cave-like area...eventually found a ladder that they climbed into another tunnel...and came out in front of the 42nd Street Public Library (when these two NYC landmarks are miles from each other)? And then, even worse, walking past the remains of the New York Stock Exchange, which is in the southern part of the city? The Library--Radio City--St. Patrick's Cathedral--and the Grand Central Station scenes made more sense because they are closer together.
3--Was Mendez XXVI wearing some sort of a bulletproof vest or something? Because when Ursus' guards shot him, he didn't bleed! However, earlier, when Ongaro (the Negro) met his fate on those spikes in the door of that cell, you could clearly see bloody holes in his robes where he had been impaled! 4--What was in that object lying on the floor that Albina used to commit suicide? I know that my Apester friends will have superb answers for these questions...I can't wait to see your responses! Back in those days when a film came to the local theater in the summer, it had usually been out for a while first showing in the big Manhattan theaters, then making the rounds in the smaller local theaters. The films would change every Wednesday, not Friday, so it was something to do in the middle of the week.

Serious answer this time. This is something that happens in many movies and TV shows. I don't know how many times I've watched something where the characters turn the corner and are suddenly in a different part of the city. In Superman Clark and Lois leave the Daily Planet on 42nd then they are in downtown near the Manhattan bridge. This not limited to films shot in New York either. Most filmmakers take creative license on locations and assume other than the natives of a particular city no one else will notice.

don't recall THE PRODUCERS or ROSEMARY'S BABY, but 2001 made it on a

What movies were ranked 1, 2 and 3? I would guess 2001, The Producers
and Rosemary's Baby.

It would also destroy the pacing and create much longer movies if they
showed every step every character makes to get from one place to
another....
Are you sure PG didn't exist back then? I know PG-13 didn't, but I

VHS and Beta was a format war, much like HD-DVD and Blu-ray are having now,

VHS died only because the industry stopped supporting it. Ditto for audio
cassettes and Laserdiscs.

Blammo. However, I don't know if there'd be another move for everyone to
make a mass conversion from DVD to whatever the next thing ends up being. A
while back the music industry was looking for the follow up to Compact Discs,
but in the meantime a little thing called MP3 happened and now you'll never see
a new format for music to be released where people would be forced to
replace their collections again. I wonder if we'll see the same thing
happen with DVD where there'll be a simplified digital process made available
and the industry loses control of the technology.

Vinyl actually managed to hang around somehow, though I don't
necessarily subscribe to that whole "taking the soul out of the music" mentality
that vinyl enthusiasts espouse. Laserdisc and DVD (digital) are clearly
superior to videotape (magnetic). Why that fact is acknowledged but not applied
to CD (digital) vs vinyl (magnetic) was always beyond me.
Curiously, there's still loads of stuff that was released on vinyl
and VHS that has yet to be released in a digital format (legally, anyways),
so that drives the collector's market on places like eBay and so forth.

I had been in touch with someone at Image Entertainment back in the
mid-90's, and he told me that the only reason that BATTLE wasn't initially
released on LD along with the other four is because they couldn't find a useable
print. I'd have to look in my old catalogs, but I'm pretty sure it was at least
solicited to vendors at one point. Never heard anything about sales of ESCAPE
and CONQUEST being very poor, but now that I think about it I did get CONQUEST
on closeout from a place in Boston (I think) called The Laser's Edge. Here's a
bit of trivia- PLANET was released on LD first, but ESCAPE actually came out
second. I remember this vividly because I used to shop for LDs at Tower and the
guy in charge of ordering really kept on top of what was going on with new
releases.
I never bothered with the 1998 LD releases, but I always presumed that they
went with the theatrical version because that's what was being shown on TV at
the time with the AMC 30th anniversary and so forth. Also probably because that
was the version that was getting released on VHS.
Anyone remember if all five movies were released separately on VHS back in
1998, or did you have to buy the box set if you wanted the sequels? I remember
PLANET coming out separately on VHS (in widescreen as I recall), but I don't
remember the other four. I do remember driving down to a mall about 40 minutes
south of me to buy the widescreen box set because you had to do that so you
could mail away for a free copy of BEHIND on VHS. Ahh, a much simpler
time...
Chris L.
>>I have the Japan laserdisc and they are the same transfers as the
initial American laserdisc releases. The extended Battle transfer was
supposed to be released in the U.S. but sales of Escape and Conquest on
laserdisc were so dismal, and the Battle transfer (with the extended
footage) was so bad, Fox opted not to release it in the states. They
subsequently THX remasterd and released Battle on laserdisc, but I don't
know why they opted for the theatrical version, instead of extended on that
release... << <.html <.html

in the early '90s, but I do recall I never missed it. I was too busy
trying to get a better version of PLANET because that original
laserdisc was dreadful. I always wanted one of those big collector
edition box sets, but we never got it. I had to get the THX remastered
LDs in '99 because I couldn't take the old LD any longer and because it
had 5.1 "AC-3" sound for PLANET. I went out and got a whole new amp
just to hear that! In retrospect isn't wasn't all that great and it
wasn't until the 35th anniversary DVD that PLANET finally sounded and
looked truly decent. I can't recall if all five of the movies were
released separately in '98 on VHS. All I know is that I bought both
the letterboxed set of all five, plus the single PLANET in the plastic
case. Funny, but at first I wasn't at all bothered by the spoiler
cover art, but later it really pissed me off.

at least
solicited to vendors at one point. Never heard anything about sales of
ESCAPE
and CONQUEST being very poor, but now that I think about it I did get
CONQUEST
on closeout from a place in Boston (I think) called The Laser's Edge.
Here's a
bit of trivia- PLANET was released on LD first, but ESCAPE actually
came out
second. I remember this vividly because I used to shop for LDs at Tower
and the
guy in charge of ordering really kept on top of what was going on with
new
releases.
I never bothered with the 1998 LD releases, but I always presumed that
they
went with the theatrical version because that's what was being shown on
TV at
the time with the AMC 30th anniversary and so forth. Also probably
because that
was the version that was getting released on VHS.
Anyone remember if all five movies were released separately on VHS back
in
1998, or did you have to buy the box set if you wanted the sequels? I
remember
PLANET coming out separately on VHS (in widescreen as I recall), but I
don't
remember the other four. I do remember driving down to a mall about 40
minutes
south of me to buy the widescreen box set because you had to do that so
you
could mail away for a free copy of BEHIND on VHS. Ahh, a much simpler
time...

Dave's Laser Place Studio Day in Studio City, CA. He said it would
come up in every meeting, but was shot down every time. It was
definitely the extended version that was in the Japan box. He said he
received numerous letters from the same five guys over and over again
asking for the release (I was one of them.) The Studio Day the
following year he was really excited to tell me about the Japan set,
I had already purchased it by then. He has since left Fox video.

I thought when you had mentioned the image, it would have been a cartoon drawing, which is why I was so curious to see it.
I thought that one of the artists (If it is true they were Filipino), had snuck in something religious in a drawing until I saw the scan, so thank you!! This is a link of a site I came across the internet a few weeks ago:

Certain people are huggers of them and it's located in Ape City. Funny
I've never paid any attention to it before, but it really stood out
this time. Poor thing. I wondered why the couldn't have replaced it

The folks that put it together set the PDF file so that it couldn't be
printed. It would be up to them to decide otherwise....

.htmlIs it that tree on the causeway, the one with the big hairy balls you
see in some publicity shots by the Lawgiver's statue? I know that one
member of the Planet cast who was not in Beneath definitely liked
hugging big hairy balls. John, Scrolls.

.html Hello there!!!!
I had joined your P.O.T.A. Group quite recently it's fantastic to
see many people who are still frantic about the APES phenomenon as
myself - & it's also welcoming to see more info / site links towards
APES info new to myself!
I have been a fan here in the U.K. since being a child in the early
70s during the debut screening of the live action/animated TV
shows
straight down to the screenings of the 5 movies on TV later on
I've also been collecting memorabilia of both the TV shows & the
movies, ranging from the British & U.S. comic books, mags, & novels
to
posters, soundtracks, videos & DVDs
As an artist, I've illustrated various characters from the world of
tv/ movie Sci-Fi for galleries, fanzines, conventions, etc. & very
soon I'll be showing some of my tributes to the P.O.T.A. trilogy!
Speak again soon!!!

.htmlRob,
Welcome. I am also a new member even though I have been in love with the movies and anything P.O.T.A.-related for a VERY long time. My worst years of fanatical apelove was in highschool, but with college, marriage and kids, my fervor subsided--a little...until I found this group! My earliest memories, if I may now confess, is that I would have my dad cut my hair short when I was in grade school almost like a boy's haircut. I would love to see my hair fall on the back of my hand and imagine that I were an ape. I never told anyone, but since this group would understand I might as well fess up! I can't wait to see your artwork.
Jessica.

.htmlYeah, I'm talking about the big pine tree near the center of Ape City.
I'll bet it was a transplant. Quite dead by the time they shot BENEATH
in '69.
Has anyone here been on Google Earth lately? They give you a pretty
good look at the Malibu area now and someone has posted where the Ape
City set was. If you zoom in over the Malibu are north of LA, then
under "Layers" in the lower left corner click on "Gallery" and type in
Ape City above in "Fly To" it'll take you right to the spot. I can now
see clearly where not just Ape City was, but the Rock Pool and the
field where the Cornfield was planted, which is across from a Hindu
Temple. I'm sure Jeff Krueger can verify this.

I believe this is where the cornfield was in PLANET (although more to
the left outside of the shot) and you can find it on Google Earth.
