I think because it is a communal experience. When watching your own tape or DVD it is just you watching it. But when the films are on TV there are thousands or millions of others watching it at the same time.

Since it is scheduled for only a 1 hour and 45 minute time period, I would guess that it is the theatrical version. So far only the FOX movie channel has shown the Extended version.

With the number of commercial breaks on AMC, I would guess we're gonna
get a repeat of BATTLE's first CBS network showing!

Yeah it can. Any movie by Roland Emmerich has a ruined Statue of Liberty. ID4, "Day After Tomorrow", probably even "Godzilla". Ruined Statue of Liberties are a dime a dozen. And they were even before POTA. It's the context of it in POTA that made it memorable. Jeff

There were dozens of uncredited actors in POTA, does anyone know the
names of any of the actors playing humans or apes? Who played 'Old

The IMDB has everybody listed, cast and crew, for each of the five
films. If there was anyone not listed that I knew of I'd have already
posted it there. I don't think there's any "Secrets of the Planet of
the Apes" in terms of uncredited actors left, unless you're one of the
younger fans who have yet to delve deeply into POTA trivia. If so,
    start delving!

I continue to find out things about the people involved that I didn't
know before. Such as Emil Kosa Jr., PLANET's matte artist. He only
gets credit on Fox films starting in 1958, but I recently learned from
the Internet that he starting working for 20th Century Pictures in 1933
before that company merged with Fox Film Corporation to become 20th
Century-Fox in 1935, and that it was he, Kosa, that painted the famous
20th "searchlight" logo. So when you see the 20th Century-Fox logo on
the old films, that's an Emil Kosa Jr. matte painting. I think that's
    pretty cool.

I've attached a photo to this email that I hope everyone can see. It's
of the Fox matte artists at work back in the late forties, and the
third guy in from the left (looks like a little bald dude) is Emil Kosa
Jr. The man in the suit talking to them, by the way, is Fred Sersen
who was head of the Fox special effects department before L.B. Abbott
took it over. The "tank" at Fox, where they would shoot the models of
everything from the 1953 TITANIC, to the POTA spaceship sinking, the
Seaview in VTTBOTS, to the ships in TORA! TORA! TORA!, was called the
    Sersen Tank.

20th Century Fox, once the home where sci-fi classics were forged, had a setback at the box office this weekend. Their sequel to "Alien vs. Predator" sank to the bottom of the heap behind such classics as the Will Smithified - Heston remake "I Am Legend" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks". AvP2 made $10 million over the weekend and $26.8 million so far since opening Christmas Day ($10 million less than the first one's opening). This seemed like an odd choice for a sequel since people weren't thrilled by the original (though James Cameron liked it). AvP2 was even beat by Fox's own fragile indie comedy "Juno", which has been getting raves (Fox may suck at big pictures but it kicks some when it comes to their small films).
Meanwhile, Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd" continues to flounder; it did, well, worse than AvP2. But it's getting him the best reviews of his career and a possible first Oscar nomination. And you guys said he couldn't direct!   Jeff

    Well here is a comparison:

It could be the same woman. And Diane is usually spelled with one N, not two.

The photo on the website could be airbrushed making her look younger. But look at the facial features. Both have the high foreheard. The chin and nose are very similar as is the position of the eyes.

    Indeed.

Unfortunately, we're at a point where a lot of the principal people both in front of the cameras and behind the scenes are either dead, in bad health, or getting up there in age. Fortunately not everyone, but when you think of all the people who are no longer with us who would have been wonderful interview subjects, you can't help but wonder what information has become lost to history.

younger fans who have yet to delve deeply into POTA trivia. If so,
    start delving!

    "Planet of the Apes" Marathon
    Posted by AMCtv.com on December 31, 2007

Heston_2 Today, for the first time in history, New Year's Eve is going by a second name: It's Planet of the Apes Day. You heard that right. At 10 a.m., Charlton Heston stars in the original version of what may be Hollywood's greatest argument against evolution. (The hairier members of mankind may counter that it's an argument "for" the theory.) This will be followed at 12:30 p.m. with a broadcast of its cultishly revered sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes . Not satsified with a simple double feature, AMC then shows Escape From the Planet of the Apes (2:30 p.m.), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (4:30 p.m.), and Battle of the Planet for the Apes (6:15 p.m.). At 8 p.m., the monkey business starts all over again with repeat screenings of the two Heston films (the first two in the series) thereby underscoring one of the franchise's messages: History repeats itself, doesn't it?

Check out our slide show of Charlton Heston: the Uncrowned King of SciFi.

Looks like I was right, AMC is showing the original CBS broadcast cut
version. I just popped over to AMC when the network news went to
commercial and watched them cut the entire desert trek out.
    Unbelievable!

LOL! For some reason that really cracked me
up. She completely bypassed the question and
tried to sell Rory some real estate. Too

Nice try, though, Rory! That would have been a

Well it was definitely the theatrical version, plus they trimmed out a few things like the departure from Ape City/trek across the desert. No idea why, because they had it slotted for an hour and 45 minutes. Past the minor nudity edits from PLANET (and I use the term 'nudity' very loosely) everything else seemed intact- even the minor cursing that appeared in PLANET, BENEATH, and CONQUEST.

I find it interesting that Warner Brothers licenced the Goldsmith POTA
music for the Blade Runner workprint on dvd, which is essentially a
bonus disc, not the main feature, yet Fox couldn't licence Goldsmith's
theme from Patton, a Fox film, for their WKRP set, and replaced it.

The fifth disc in the Blade Runner Ultimate collection is a workprint
that was screened in Los Angeles in the early 90's before the official
Director's cut was assembled. (I was lucky enough to be there.) There
are temp music tracks in the film, the end chase uses Goldsmith's POTA.
As far as WKRP is concerned, season one had an episode that used the
Patton trumpets, Fox replaced them with generic music.

Which script do you mean? POTA2001 or "Sweeney Todd"? As I recall I think there was a potential writer's strike in 2001 that put the squeeze on POTA2001. It was squeezed by being pushed up a year because they had to wait on "Minority Report" and it had to be rushed through because of a writer's strike.
As for "Sweeney", I liked it. It's a downer and very graphic but it's unlike anything Burton has done. He put aside all the "cute" stuff (except for one fantasy sequence) and just told the story, like he did with "Ed Wood", his other acclaimed film.  Jeff

Greetings, everyone. Some of the animation files I posted were in .swf
(flash) format. Realizing that some of you may not be able to play
those files, I have converted them to .exe (executable) format and re-
posted them. I hope this solves any problems you may have. Enjoy!

"From January 7th until the 26th, "PLANET OF THE APES" exhibition by Dennis Stock. Born in 1928, Dennis Stock joined Magnum in 1951 after receiving magazine LIFE's young photography award. He became famous thanks to his memorable James Dean pictures as well as his jazz musicians ones, taken between 1957 and 1960. This serie of photographs taken in 1967 on the filming of "Planet of the Apes" is very peculiar because confronting costumes of the movie and every day life in Los Angeles.
For the 60th anniversary of Magnum Photos & for the movie's 40th, a 12 silver film prints portofolio will be edited and available at colette during the exhibition. Only 12 portfolios available. " - Colette.

Planet of the Apes, alongside numerous other pop culture phenomenoms has been an ongoing inspiration in streetwear since its beginning, this show looks deep into the original era and what made the film such a big hit, aswell as of course showcasing the amazing work of Dennis stock.
