Let's have a
survey here... Who actually believes "we're screwed"? Are these the end
times for mankind, or will we somehow muddle through the mess we've made
and things will get better? Of course, eventually our species will go
extinct, but will that be tomorrow or eons from now?

I think this planet is going to go through a pretty rough patch the
next century or two, but I'm hopeful humanity (with its technology)
will be on the road to utopia after that. If I could go into suspended
animation, I wouldn't want to wake up any sooner than two or three
centuries. I wouldn't want to wake up two thousand years from now
because I would imagine that whatever it was like it would be too
strange.

By Chris Stephen and Allan Hall
The Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ordered the creation of Planet of the Apes-style warriors by crossing humans with apes, according to recently uncovered secret documents.
Moscow archives show that in the mid-1920s Russia's top animal breeding scientist, Ilya Ivanov, was ordered to turn his skills from horse and animal work to the quest for a super-warrior. According to Moscow newspapers, Stalin told the scientist: "I want a new invincible human being, insensitive to pain, resistant and indifferent about the quality of food they eat."
In 1926 the Politburo in Moscow passed the request to the Academy of Science with the order to build a "living war machine". The order came at a time when the Soviet Union was embarked on a crusade to turn the world upside down, with social engineering seen as a partner to industrialisation: new cities, architecture, and a new egalitarian society were being
created. The Soviet authorities were struggling to rebuild the Red Army after bruising wars.
And there was intense pressure to find a new labour force, particularly one that would not complain, with Russia about to embark on its first Five-Year Plan for fast-track industrialisation.
Mr Ivanov was highly regarded. He had established his reputation under the Tsar when in 1901 he established the world's first centre for the artificial insemination of racehorses.
Mr Ivanov's ideas were music to the ears of Soviet planners and in 1926 he was dispatched to West Africa with $200,000 to conduct his first experiment in impregnating chimpanzees.
Meanwhile, a centre for the experiments was set up in Georgia - Stalin's birthplace - for the apes to be raised.
Mr Ivanov's experiments, unsurprisingly from what we now know, were a total failure. He returned to the Soviet Union, only to see experiments in Georgia to use monkey sperm in human volunteers similarly fail.
A final attempt to persuade a Cuban heiress to lend some of her monkeys for further experiments reached American ears, with the New York Times reporting on the story, and she dropped the idea amid the uproar.
Mr Ivanov was now in disgrace. His were not the only experiments going wrong: the plan to collectivise farms ended in the 1932 famine in which at least four million died.
For his expensive failure, he was sentenced to five years' jail, which was later commuted to five years' exile in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan in 1931. A year later he died, reportedly after falling sick while standing on a freezing railway platform.

.htmlIt's true, Jessica. There was an hour-long special on educational
television about it earlier this week. They had animation of
the "soldiers" marching, and it looked like the gorillas from the Tim
Burton movie.

The common continuity fix for this is that in return for their
keeping silent about Taylor and the cave, as well as their public
support of the accepted "truth," Zaius arranges for their charges and
death sentence to be dropped and lets them in on the secrets of the past.
>Another question I have is for "Battle". If Caesar is the same ape
>from "Conquest", how did all apes acquire speech and a culture in
>just a few years?
That's a big one, yeah. A few different explanations have been
offered over the years in the comics, including genetic engineering
and Caesar using psychic abilities to communicate speaking ability to
the others. The latter was extrapolated from his ability to
communicate with the primitive apes in Conquest, and from their
reactions to him as he passed.
>Remember, Virgil seems to be a genius who
>knows "everything about everything". How did he gain all this

The above explanation would probably apply here as well.
>In "Battle", Virgil uses the same highway with multiple lanes example
>to explain time travel that was used by Dr. Hasslein in "Escape". If
>Hasslein knew a dreaded ape was using his example, he would roll over

Heh heh! That's a great point.
>Also, how would Virgil know about cars and highways, anyway?
Well, that's not actually an error, given when the film is
set--there'd still be cars everywhere, left over after the war, and
there are certainly going to be highways everywhere. When the apes
built their village, they probably had to move a lot of old cars out
of the way, and Caesar, who was alive when they were still being
used, was able to explain their use to the others.
>That's a terrible theory. Taylor "goes into the future" before the

Agreed--whether a person subscribes to the circular or changing
timeline theory, Taylor would be unaffected before leaving. Now, if
it is a changing timeline, he'll find a different world when he gets
there, but he still won't know what to expect since it all would have
begun after he left.

Yep, I don't buy the joy argument either. To me, the tear has always

The Icarus question is the big one--there's simply no way Milo would
have been able to (a) find the ship, (b) raise it, (c) repair it, (d)
learn to fly it, (e) fuel it and (f) launch it into orbit.

The popular fix on that one is that damage to the ships upon re-entry
caused one or both of the chronometers to malfunction. Which one is
unclear, but I've always subscribed to 3978 being the right one since
it came first.

You know, I don't see civilization as advancing that fast, in fact I
think we're still not much better than the Romans. Look at what kind
of attitudes so many still have toward people that don't live or think
like them, or what so many find entertaining.
Our science & technology is advancing, but strip us of everything, and
we're right back in the jungle. No, the beast in man is still very
much alive, but technology offers the hope that the beast can be tamed,
or at least pacified, but only in this respect: that advanced
technology can cheaply provide everyone will a decent standard of
living with plenty of distractions, an equal standard of living for
everyone, but no one too rich or too poor. I hope we're (and I mean
humanity, because I sure won't see it) there in another two centuries.

The answers will be varied. I am a fan of apocolyptic fiction.Apes
is a great example of this sub-genre.
And before the labelling of which is better, optimism/positive or
pessimism/negative begins, just remember that subjectivity is by
it's very nature, not inherently empirical evidence but more
personal preference.
The answer. The Human race will survive pretty much as the screwed
up bunch that we are. With all our faults and virtues. We will still
hypocritically love our partners while killing those we don't know.
Personally I want a future like Trek where Nationalism and
materalism gives way to unity of humankind and miniskirts. Original
Trek, mind you, not the boring Next Generation.A future of Committe
meetings would drive me insane.
When I was younger though, I wanted Global destruction and the
chance to fight Gorillas.
However, it seems that you can still do this without the mass
physcical destruction of cities etc. Beaurocrats anyone...

They make it sound as if it was taught to all ape school children. This makes Dr. Zaius' "keeper of the faith" secrets a bit unnecessary. A bit of a continuity error, but just an observation on
my part.
Another question I have is for "Battle". If Caesar is the same ape from "Conquest", how did all apes acquire speech and a culture in just a few years? Remember, Virgil seems to be a genius who
knows "everything about everything". How did he gain all this knowledge in such a short span of years? I first thought that Caesar was a descendant of the original Caesar (Milo), but then MacDonald
states that his brother was the man who aided Caesar in "Conquest", so this has to be only a few years in the future. Quite a big evolutionary leap for such a short period.

It's true, Jessica. There was an hour-long special on educational television about it earlier this week. They had animation of the "soldiers" marching, and it looked like the gorillas from the Tim

You know, I don't see civilization as advancing that fast, in fact I
think we're still not much better than the Romans. Look at what kind
of attitudes so many still have toward people that don't live or think
like them, or what so many find entertaining.
Our science & technology is advancing, but strip us of everything, and

living with plenty of distractions, an equal standard of living for
everyone, but no one too rich or too poor. I hope we're (and I mean

Everyone kind of thinks that "Star Trek" shows us a utopian future, and
that's what it says earth is like, albeit only after WWIII, but what do

the galaxy, constantly having to get into fights with others and worse.

It's true, Jessica. There was an hour-long special on educational
television about it earlier this week. They had animation of
the "soldiers" marching, and it looked like the gorillas from the Tim
Burton movie.

| Subject: OT: "Terminator" TV show |
.html
.html
The new "Terminator" TV show premieres
tonight on, er, Fox (but it's produced by Warner Bros.). I always kinda
saw the "Terminator" movies as similar to POTA in having a bleak future for
humanity and concentrating on one threat (machines instead of apes) for a
streamlined concept instead of the many aliens of the "Star Trek" and "Star
Wars" variety. They didn't deal with all the topics "Apes" did, they were
basically chase movies. But they were similar in giving sci-fi quality visuals
and serious intent.
And now "Terminator" is even more akin to
"Apes" as it juggles more balls in the air. And already they are reportedly
throwing their chronology out the window, something POTA often gets popped for.
"Terminator 3" gave the year 1997 as the demise of the character Sarah Connor
and this new series, with Sarah Connor as main character, takes place after that
date. Those making the show say they've pretty much ignored T3 and just stayed
with the famed first two James Cameron movies. Just goes to show that POTA isn't
alone in shaking up it's chronology like a snow globe. And with a planned
trilogy of new movies as well, "Terminator" will be just as busy as "Apes"
once was.
But the TV show is getting good reviews so
I'll probably check it out. I still wish Fox had given the "Apes" keys to James
Cameron, though. Reportedly he's planning a major assault on sci-fi movie making
with his 2009 "Avatar" for Fox. A groundbreaking sci-fi movie from Fox? How
long's it been? Jeff <.html <.html

collecting. They are:
This Modern World 01 - Planet of the Dubyas
This Modern World 02 - Escape From the Planet of the Dubyas
Camp Chaos Trading Card 077 - Planet of the Fetuses
I am not posting them in the Files Section because I have been taking
up too much of the group's storage space. In fact, I may remove the
toons that are already posted to make up space. If you want these
three new ones, drop me an e-mail ( RedSpy13@...) and I will be
happy to send them to you. Get the rest of them while you still can.
If you wind up missing any, don't worry. I'm always happy to send them
to you. I also have a number of Windows Desktop Themes that haven't
been posted, if you are interested in those, as well.
Happy collecting, and Simian Smiles to all!

| Subject: Re: Battle for the Planet of the Apes |
.htmlJust watched the entire series over the past week. So I will take a
stab at these questions.
1) In Beneath Doctor Zaeus places Cornelius and Zira in charge of
his post when he rides to war with Urkko. This implies to me that
after what they learned in their time with Taylor added to working
alongside Zaeus the week or two between Taylor leaving and Brent
arriving, Zaeus shared with them some of this knowledge. Im sure Dr.
Milo may have known some of this stuff as well.
2) At the end of Conquest Lisa can say no fairly easy. Plus we know
that according to Zira and Cornelius in Escape Aldo was originally
the first ape to say no. Aldo is in Conquest as well. Meaning the
apes of that timeline's 1991 were at the point of learning to speak
on their own anyway. In Battle Mandeimos, the guard of the Ape City
Armory says he has been guarding it for 27 years, thats a long time
if you ask me. Long enough for intelligent apes to learn to speak.
3) My question is this. Is Central City the name for New York in
1991? I take it that Conquest takes place in the alternate 1991 of
New York as that is where the Alpha Omega bomb is in Battle while it
is quite obvious that New York is where POTA and Beneath take place.

.html This show is so awful. How did Cameron ever make this silly stuff
work? How many times are we supposed to believe that a
super-sophisticated robot can't think of any better way to kill a kid
than take pot shots at him -- and then keep missing! And I'm not even
going to get into the psychology of having a hot mom AND a cute teenage
robot girl rescuer in this teenage boy fantasy adventure absurdity.
It's just ridiculous, lame, tired old crap, but I guess that's why it's
on Fox. Oh, for the good old days of X-Files' first couple of seasons.

Yeah, it is pretty awful when it gets down
to this size budget. I guess Cameron made it work through sheer force of
personality (and Ah-nuld). But look at it this way: just suppose someone made a
TV show out of "Apes". Wouldn't the concept seem just as silly? Oh, wait. Don't
answer that.
On the plus side, it DOES have a hot mom and
cute teenage robot girl. And they were nekid! But it reminded me of that '80's
sitcom about the girl robot, can't remember the name.

This show is so awful. How did Cameron ever make this silly stuff work?
How many times are we supposed to believe that a super-sophisticated robot
can't think of any better way to kill a kid than take pot shots at him --
and then keep missing! And I'm not even going to get into the psychology
of having a hot mom AND a cute teenage robot girl rescuer in this teenage

crap, but I guess that's why it's on Fox. Oh, for the good old days of
X-Files' first couple of seasons.

Yeah, it is pretty awful when it gets down to this size budget. I guess Cameron made it work through sheer force of personality (and Ah-nuld). But look at it this way: just suppose someone made a TV show out of "Apes". Wouldn't the concept seem just as silly? Oh, wait. Don't answer that.

Well...not if they're apes as we know them today. Apes can't learn
to speak, no matter how long you wait for that to happen. The
problem many people have with Battle is that it's inconceivable that
modern-day apes would learn to speak in the same generation in which
the rebellion happened. It's not pshysiologically
possible. However, once you take into account the comics'
explanations (genetic engineering, tied in with effects of the plague
and Caesar's psychic abilities) it becomes more plausible.

Central City, seen in the TV show, is on the West Coast, in
California. As for Conquest, that is widely accepted as taking place
in California as well. Check out my timeline

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you here. It has been a wide misconception that Conquest took place on the West Coast thanks to Marvel's timeline.
In the film itself there is nothing established to determine the location. But when Battle is taken into account, especially the extended version, it is obvious that both films took place on the East Coast.
Additionally in the book, "The Planet of the Apes Chronicles", Dayton Ward constructed a timeline that was based on Paul Dehn's original timeline for the series and it places both Conquest & Battle on the East Coast, not the West.

Absolutely true. What this comes down to, I guess, is one's personal
picture of what constitutes POTA canon. I am in the "try to make it

This just in! I happened across the current
issue of Lee's Toy Review magazine (# 183, Jan. '08) and there's an article
about collector Bruce Zalkin. He met up with someone who was a Mego designer
back in the day (I guess his specialty was action figure clothes). Anyway,
Zalkin was shown lots of prototypes the designer saved; clothes, heads, etc.
That stuff wasn't for sale but Zalkin did buy prototype packaging (pictured in
the magazine). He says the rarest is the rough maive-colored backing card for
Zira (the back of the card is blank). He's also got some other
stuff.
Anyway, he putting this stuff up on ebay
this week. I wasn't able to google it but I wanted to get this info to the
groups right away. Good luck on this stuff. His ebay name is littlemarz .
I have a prototype I'm rather fond of. It's
the rough prototype of Hasbro's '90's Zira. She's got no coloring and her
clothes are a different color, brown and black instead of green. And there's
writing on her that the designers did. Some shop thought it was abad imitation
and I got it for $5. That's probably my best "Apes" bargain ever. Ah,
prototypes...

Well, the thing is, Revolution takes place in San Diego, pretty much
cementing it as the West Coast. I can't think of a way to make
Revolution work if you set the last two films in New York--and, in my
opinion, Revolution is just too good to disregard. (I consider it a
better story than the fifth film, in fact.)
> Well shouldn't what the screenwriters intended be the starting point

Yes, and no. I'm less concerned with what Dehn and other writers
intended and more with how it all fits together. After all, these
are the same writers who couldn't get the years straight from one
film to the next; who had a rescue mission sent out for a ship that
was never missing in he first place since it did exactly what it was
expected to do--experience time dilation and vanish into the future;
who had Milo manage to get Taylor's ship out of the water and fly it;
who had present-day apes become sentient and able to speak and even
philosophize in a single generation; and so forth.
They themselves didn't seem to have a clear handle on what was going
on, so I'm happy to accept other writers' interpretations of events.
Marvel worked out the NY/Calif. discrepency with the underground tube
system (which, I might add, actually ties in well with the depiction
of the U.S. government as seen in both the Conquest novel and
Revolution), while Revolution itself made the speaking apes work--and
since that removes several plotholes, then I give it more credence
than what Dehn may have intended. 'Cause the truth is, regardless of
what he intended, he did a pretty haphazard job of maintaining
consistency and sense.
Keep in mind, when I say this, that I absolutely respect your right
to disagree. Vive la diference.
Even if I'm right.

Would you mind elaborating on that point? I'm not sure I follow you--
why does when it was written affect how accurate it is? I could write
a novelization of the first film today that would be dead-on accurate
as long as I made a point of being accurate. <.html

But you don't have to disregard Revolution. The location is not intrinsic to the plot in anyway, other than it is the same city seen in Conquest. You could place it in Florida or Chicago or the East Coast and it is still the same story.
Plus during the online chat we had here in the group with Ty Templeton & Joe O'Brian they both admitted they had not seen Extended Version of Battle before writing Revolution and that they blew it by placing it on the West Coast.

But the films are the foundation that everything else is built, they shouldn't be disrepected. Nor should they be given less weight than what came after. Many became POTA fans because of the comics or TV show or something else. But the comics wouldn't have existed if not for the films. To steal a quote from George Lucas, "The films are canon, everything else is hearsay".

But that is mainly because of the haphazard way the films were produced. When they produced each film they thought is was the last. Even the Star Wars films (which were all allegedly planned out at the beginning) have discrepencies. But focusing on them is failing to see the forest for the trees.
Many people who deny evolution point to minor discrepencies that evolution doesn't explain. They use them as proof of creationism because that explains everything in a neat little package. But isn't better to get it right even if it is not totally perfect than getting wrong just because there are no loose ends.

One of the reasons I stay out of these arguments now is that I just
don't get the fixation on everything having to "fit together." Whether
it's STAR TREK, STAR WARS, APES or whatever, there's always a bunch
that are obsessed with fixing discrepancies. I guess there's a fun to
it that escapes me, but after you've figured out how to fix it all it's
still the way it is. You can't change what's done.
Didn't Roddy McDowall talk about this very thing in the long interview
on the 2-disc BTPOTA DVD? I recall he was talking about the
discrepancies in the old Universal FRANKENSTEIN series.

In BATTLE they go to the "Archives section" to view the tapes of the
"Presidential Commission... etc., etc." Now, wouldn't such things be
kept in a "National Archive" and wouldn't something of a National or
Presidential nature be kept near or in Washington, DC? Therefore, I've
always figured CONQUEST was someplace near Washington. Also, remember
"Provinces" and no longer "States" are mentioned in CONQUEST, so
there's been some kind of big change to the government. Anyway, New
York has nothing to do with CONQUEST or BATTLE, it's just a place that
used to be near the very end of PLANET and in the second half of

.htmlI certainly hope so.The comics industry is brutally tough and we were
lucky, as Apes fans, that Revolution was so excellent. We need to
support this incarnation of new Apes, not least because it's all we've
got.John,Scrolls.

| Why would AMC have shown ESCAPE following PLANET? That was ridiculous! I have another question or two BENEATH me: I had wondered anyone here has ever wondered as to what became of Taylor after he disappeared into that rock wall illusion...it would be nice if Hunter, or Kassidy, or someone could do a story showing what may have happened:
Did Taylor end up in one of the many subway tunnels after he passed through the illusion...and could he have possibly heard that "hum", maybe the same one (or possibly a different version) that Brent and Nova would eventually hear, after their narrow escape from the gorilla guards? Did he end up in front of the half-melted water fountain (next to the equally-half-melted East 51sy Street sign, outside of what was once St. Patrick's Cathedral? Was he given telepathic messages by Mendez or one of the other leaders to remain in front of the cathedral and wait for some guards...who then took him to the "Inquisition Room" (a portion of the former Grand Central Station terminal) where he was "questioned" by Albina, Mendez XXVI, Adiposo (the Fat Man), Ongaro (the Negro), and Caspay? And, when they couldn't get anything out of him regarding the pending Ape Army invasion, then he was placed in a cell?
Taylor isn't shown but once, briefly, when Brent is interrogated by the mutant council in the "Room" (part of the former Grand Central Station terminal). And then, of course, when Brent is escorted to the same cell later on, Taylor is shown prominently from that point on. One additional thing that has puzzled me as well. When Ursus, Zaius and the Grand Army of the Apes defeat the illusions of the desert, and after they see the above-ground ruins of NYC, they run across an opening in the ground...the very same opening to the "Queensboro Plaza" subway station that Brent and Nova discovered earlier in the movie! How could that be...certainly, they should have found another one, or possibly several others, at the above-ground ruins! Anyway, what are my friends' comments on these? Zach

I don't know what happened to Taylor, but I guess he must have lost his
loincloth thingie along the way, cause the mutants had to lend him some
clothes.

Not that we know, but with Taylor’s
sense of cynicism, and nobody like Nova that they could use as leverage against
him, the mutants probably gave him a quick interrogation, where he was
singularly unhelpful in doing more than confirming that Ape City still existed
and his backstory as an astronaut, and then threw him in a cell. The mutants
struck me as smart enough to take the idea of time travel and astronauts in
stride.
I can’t see him doing more than
laugh at the idea of being held by the Keepers of the Divine Bomb because after
months of captivity with the Apes, I don’t think a whole lot would faze
him. He was made of stronger stuff than Brent, enough for him to be referred to
as an “enemy” (as in the line from Beneath about how “we get
our enemies to kill each other”).
