I had an idea once that there would be a Mutant who specialized in
plucking memories from the minds of captives. My idea was that Taylor
would then be visited, in his cell, by the illusions of a succession
of people he once knew (Landon, Dodge, Stewart, etc) in an effort by
the Mutants to break his will.

Of course Taylor would realize what was happening but at the same time
it would begin to wear him down so when he sees Brent for the first
time he wonders if he's real.

An idea was as far as I got.

I must agree that showing ESCAPE after PLANET was a stupid idea on
AMC's part. Who knows what runs through the minds of tv programmers.

On to your question about Taylor's whereabouts after disappearing
into the mirage. I think it is safe to say that he experienced
pretty much what Brent and Nova did. Remember when Taylor asks Brent
how he got there, Brent replied the same way you did - spaceship,
ape-city, subway. Taylor made no comment to contradict Brent's
assumption of a similar path, so one must conclude that Taylor went
through just that. It would have been cool to see some those goings-
on but if you recall, it was in Heston's deal to kill off Taylor.
Most of the original drafts had Taylor expiring before the second
act and that would have been unsatisfying. So a compromise was
reached, Taylor will appear in the first act then disappear. Only to
reappear in the end just in time to destroy the planet; Heston's
idea by the way. If you don't already have it, you should pick
up "Planet of the Apes Revisited", link below. This book is loaded
with cool behind the scenes knowledge. It is an absolute must for
any Apes fan. I hope this helped clear up some of your query.

Also, when the Mutant says to Taylor and Brent, "We let our enemies kill each other", Taylor has a look of horror on his face. I always got the impression that he had been forced to fight and kill some of the captured Gorilla scouts.

Mad Scientist behaviour is never of topic.
I admit to supporting Genetic research to deal with/cure many Genetic
diseases. Science doesn't frighten me.
People do.

Pierce Brosnan says on his website, "I'm off to South Africa to make "Vanilla Gorilla", an adventure film about an albino gorilla that has the capacity to speak through sign language. It's the story of a father and daughter who find themselves on an adventure of a lifetime as they try to restructure their relationship after the loss of their mother/wife".
Let's hope it's better than "Congo". Actually, let's hope it's better than pretty much every recent movie that has features apes. Jeff

Let's hope they change the title, because that sounds like a kid's

movie. I'm gonna go see what I can find out about it at IMDB.

"A New York girl befriends Gogo, the world's only living albino
gorilla. Through sign language they communicate and bond, and their
ensuing trans-African quest to return Gogo to the wild puts ruthless
poachers, determined CNN reporters, and one very concerned parent on

Sounds like it should be fun for ten-year-olds of all ages. Well,
let's just hope the kid and the gorilla remember one very important

Also, when the Mutant says to Taylor and Brent, "We let our enemies kill each other", Taylor has a look of horror on his face. I always got the impression that he had been forced to fight and kill some of the captured Gorilla scouts.

Kevin, they were originally called "Monkey'ed Movies", and they were
shown on TBS during commercial breaks. Then they turned them into a
short-lived half-hour show called "The Chimp Channel". The spoofs
were always good for a laugh. Glad you enjoyed it!

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 19) - Allan Melvin, a character actor best known for
playing Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," has died. He was 84.
Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home in the Brentwood section of

employment as a voice actor from the early 1960s to the early 1990s,
most famously providing the voice of "Magilla Gorilla" for the Hanna
Barbera cartoon of the same name.

Yesterday we're just talking about VANILLA GORILLA and coincidently
        today comes this news:

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 19) - Allan Melvin, a character actor best known for
playing Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," has died. He was 84.
Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home in the Brentwood section of
Los Angeles, said Amalia Melvin, his wife of 64 years. He saw steady
employment as a voice actor from the early 1960s to the early 1990s,
most famously providing the voice of "Magilla Gorilla" for the Hanna
Barbera cartoon of the same name.

Have you thought about signing up for that IMDB Pro? Supposedly that gives you the option to contact industry people. Might be cheaper that what an ad would cost, though I can't imagine either would be cheap.

Find out what the costs are and let us know. Maybe we could all kick in a little bit to cover the costs- there's certainly a wealth of information yet to be discovered.

I picked one up. Not much to it- mostly stills and photos of Maurice Evans being made up. One thing I did take notice of was some of the poor ape makeup in the crowd scene when Taylor was getting pelted with everything. The crowd shots in BENEATH get a lot of flak, but this was almost as bad.

Cool. Thanks Rory. One of the good things about the internet is that a lot of "behind the scenes" people can get as much recognition as the main cast and crew and have their moment in the sun as well. Makes up for all the faux celebrities like Vanessa Vodka, Tila Tequila- whatever the hell her name is- that always seem to have something written about them.

surprised by the concept of Fox listening and accepting data/comment

Maybe THAT'S why Caesar's statue is crying? Oddly enough, the current
SFX Magazine has a brief feature with Tim Roth about his upcoming
role as the Abomination and he speaks really fondly of his role as
Thade, saying he really enjoyed doing that role.As for a 'prequel',
could that be taking up from where the first one ended, with Leo back
on Thade's world--or could it be Thade arriving in the middle of
Gettysburg and tipping the fight in favour of the South?! We dread to
        think.John, Scrolls.

It sounds like FOX may be interested in trying to relaunch the franchise ala "Batman Returns" and "Casino Royale". However, it seems odd that they would try to revive Burton's POTA universe. All the recent marketing efforts from the Sideshow figures to the Revolution comic have been in the Classic universe. That's what fans want.

Well, the "classic" stuff hasn't sold either (maybe thanks to Burton's flick). If that was back in November the rumor probably would've been more widespread by now, if they were publicly looking for directors. Then again, with all their franchises going down in flames ("Fantastic 4", "Alien vs. Predator", that dragon thing) I'd think they'd be looking at POTA again. Enough time has passed since Burton they could just start from scratch. Jeff

It's difficult to gauge a movie's potential from other related
media. The Apes merchandise in 1974/5 was immense, leaving a lasting
mark, but the related tv series failed. The Marvel magazine was also
one of the more succesful black and whites of the era.Phantom Menace
nearly brought down a publishing house the merchandising tanked so
badly. Spider-Man did a billion at the box office but barely rippled
the comic sales--the comic sales only improved with a new
writer. There never has been a mega succesful Star Trek comic, despite
the series enduring popularity and even Star Wars is a marginal,
specialist comic, not in the true mainstream. The one clear fact is
that the original five classic movies did great business,
establishing a gilt edged guarantee of success that even Burton's
movie didn't defeat--the 2001 still made big bucks.I think, somehow,
Fox needs to be told that it has and could breed from a Classic Apes
cash cow that could shit money for them for years. John.

It didn't? I know the Revolution comic didn't sell as well as expected but that was more of a distribution problem.

It's laughable, but the rumours may have a sick logical
        truth.Hollywood is ironically, unimaginative.Prequels are a trendy
happening. The Trek movie is the most obviuos example.Fox are one of
the more derivative studios who love to copy.
I can well believe someone talked about an Apes prequel.whether it
will eventuate is another thing entirely. I hope not.
Having just read a Biography of Peter Jackson and the response he
got in 1993 when Apes was in Production Hell, I think that Apes
would fair better if Fox sold the Franchise.
Jackson floated the continuation of the series in the original
universe. Even had Roddy McDowall lined up to reprise an older
Cornelius.( I do not know how he planned to deal with continuity)But
Fox Exec's couldn't give a Monkeys for the idea until too late. They
went back to Jackson after rejecting him twice. He then rejected them
as he had Rings at that stage.
Years later we got Burton's bowel movement.

As to whether the films have a market? Tough call. I see the Ape
merchandise as a slow seller.Low prices and still unwanted.Sideshow
figures are always on ebay at dirt cheap prices.Perhaps the backlash
for the Burton Dysentry. The Phantom Menace did kill an awful lot of
Collecters businessesssss. I speak from experience.

Still, I want another Apes film or Series and would be prepared to
        be pleasantly surprised.

        Brendan.

It's terrible that such things even have to be considered! Back in the
"olden days" when I was a kid you didn't get any "merchandise" from a
film unless it had already been a hit! Now, that's the first thing
they think of before even the script has been written! It's greed,
dammit! Naked, merciless greed! They'll spend all this time and
effort on how much they're going to milk the thing, and meanwhile no
one with any brains is noticing the movie they're making sucks ass!

Cornelius.( I do not know how he planned to deal with continuity)

Yeah, Fox was stupid for not letting that one go forward.

Are you sure about him playing Cornelius, though?  I got a feeling from the book that McDowall was going to be playing a fourth ape--a gray-haired artist--and that the movie was set to take place after Battle.

Yeah, You're right Rich. It was a Cornelius like character, but older
and set after Battle. Damn, I must have subconsciously been wanting to

        .html

Was at the library today and decided to take a look at the New York Times archives to see if I could determine if The Liberator ever aired in 1974.

According to the TV series DVD booklet, "Up Above the World so High" aired on 12/6/74 and all other episodes can be accounted for in the previous weeks. Looking at the Times TV pages for 12/13/74 (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/NYT121374.jpg) aired a repeat of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" on that night at 8PM. The next week, 12/20/74, Planet of the Apes is listed as a repeat guest starring Royal Dano, presumably a repeat of the premiere episode.

So it is still a mystery if The Liberator ever aired on CBS but so far the available evidence indicates that it did not.

James, from everything I have read on the subject, "The Liberator"
aired in the UK, but never in the states.

Of course it aired; I saw it. It was up against the show "Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus". So whenever "Virginia" aired in 1974, that's when "The Liberator" aired. I remember it distinctly because I was pissed off there weren't very many apes in it. Jeff

This reminds me of the series "Earth 2", which I videotaped every
week. One episode was pre-empted by the Billy Graham Crusade. When
the episodes were repeated, the same episode was again pre-empted by
the Billy Graham Crusade, and then the series was cancelled and not
repeated in reruns. I had to wait until the series came out on DVD
to see that one episode. LOL

This is pretty simply to answer, guys.... Because the ratings for APES
was so piss poor, CBS gave its affiliates permission to replace APES
with other programming, at least for one episode. Some markets in the
country did it, others did not. I was living in Ft. Lauderdale at the
time, and the Miami CBS affiliate did not show The Liberator. I guess
the ratings were so bad that even the CBS owned station in NYC rather
show something else, but maybe the show pulled better ratings in LA or
maybe because Fox is in LA CBS didn't dare not show it there? Oh well!
        Ancient history now.

I remember we had this conversation LONG ago. Someone posted the TV Guide pages. I think they had "Up Above" two weeks in a row or something. There was something that preempted it on the East Coast, I think. But in California we got it. Watching those episodes for the first time are seared into my brain. I remember my er, um, babysitter wanted to watch "Virginia" and I wanted to watch POTA, so I watched it on another TV and it was a hollow victory because there were hardly any apes. Just thinking about "Virginia" I have that awful theme song playing in my head.  Jeff

The Book is The Authorised Biography of Peter Jackson by Brian
Sibley. In it Jackson says the following...

'Fran ( Walsh) and I had devised a storyline that continued the Apes
saga from where it left of in the fifth movie. We imagined their
world being in the midst of an artistic renaissance, which made the
governement very nervous. It was a time of amazing art and we wanted
Roddy McDowall to play an elderly chimpanzee that we based a little
on Leonardo De Vinci. The plot involved the humans rising in a revolt
and a Half Human, Half Ape central character that was sheltered by
liberal Apes, but hunted down by Gorillas'

Then it goes on to mention that Peter, Fran and Harry Ulfland had
lunch with Roddy who... 'had read their Planet Of The Apes proposal
and had warmed to the fact that they had created a new chimpanzee
character with him in mind and which felt like a comfortable grey-
        haired version of Cornelius.'

They then went to Fox Studios with Roddy who gave then a small tour
        and trip down memory lane.

Later they met the Execx's who didn't give a damn about Roddy or
        Jackson's proposal.

For more snippets, you'll have to buy the book. Available on UK
        AMazon still.

Fascinating and exasperating! Oddly enough, given the current
threads, Leuric in Up Above is desccribed as a Leonardo type
character in original outlines. An artistic Roddy would have been a
        joy to watch. John, Scrolls.

Exactly. There was something that preempted "The Liberator" in some areas. We got to the bottom of it a long time ago here but I don't know how to find it in the archives. "The Liberator", then the next week "Up Above the World", and then a repeat of the pilot (I was on vacation up in the mountains and remember there was a snowy picture on the TV during the pilot repeat). And that was it. I couldn't believe it was gone. It seemed like the greatest show on TV at the time.  Jeff

In North Carolina, "Up Above" was preempted then shown
the following week...then the pilot the next
        week...then they were gone

Nothing's sold well. The Hasbro "Apes", the Sideshow "Apes", the "Revolution" comics, the Inkworks and whatever the other company was cards. And it can't all be blamed on quality. And of course the POTA2001 stuff was a disaster. It might not seem fair but to the industry POTA takes the blame for that too. It's just not a concept people want. They want superheroes I guess.  Jeff

It didn't? I know the Revolution comic didn't sell as well as expected but that was more of a distribution problem.

This week we have some great new productions for your listening pleasure and A LOT of news!
This week marks the much awaited conclusion to our long running series Planet of the Apes. Taylor makes a truly earth shattering discovery on this Simian Planet of the future… Join him on his final adventure in this series.
We also have the premiere of our new Comedy series Broken Scenes. Broken Scenes is a place for writers, directors, post-producers, composers, and actors to develop projects that are less than epic in undertaking. We thought it'd be fun too!
This week we also take a look behind the scenes of our new hit show Maudelayne. What does go on behind the scenes? Find out more about Percy Atherton from the actor himself!
In addition to all of this we have Chapter 1 of another great novel to add to our growing list of Hooligan Audio Books : The Eustace Diamonds. Read by our very own Alexa Chipman, creator and writer of our new show Maudelayne. Be sure to check it out.

Finally, we have a long awaited announcement for all of our Hooligans who have been asking where they can get their hands on something Hooligan-y. Starting today, you can shop for all of your Hooligan wares at the BrokenSea Hooligan Marketplace!
We're kicking off our grand opening with a tribute to our premiere hit series Doctor Who. New merchandise will become available every few weeks, and we'll be letting you know in advance so you can look for swag from your favorite show!

Planet Of the Apes (1968) collapsed onto a single image.

Each of the 150,000 roughly) frames from the film, contributes a single pixel which are lined up one by one from left to right. So each vertical line constitutes roughly 10 seconds of film footage. The colored strips relate to different scenes in the film. For example the green patch is early on when the humans are chased through the forest by the apes. The pareticular pixel chosen from each frame corresponds to the position on the screen to which it will be added.

OK, I don't know if there's anything to this, but I've just discovered
a couple of websites and there's a claim of a "rumor" that Fox is
looking for a director to helm a "Planet of the Apes" prequel,
unfortunately not to any of the original films but the remake --Ugh!
Anyway, these rumors date back to last November, so who knows if this
is for real? There sure hasn't been anything reported elsewhere, so...
"Lawgiver, who knows about this shit?"

Thanks, James, but there was another one posted later that had more
photos on it, such as Lou Wagner on location in Arizona.

I think the idea was that Thade was supposed to have escaped in a
second spaceship, presumably to chase Marky-Mark, but the time-warp
thingie sent him back to Earth further back in time. How far back? No
idea. What happened? No idea. I guess a prequel would answer those
questions, but given the state of current cinema I'll bet it'll still
make no sense whatever -- if the rumor is true.

I've been meaning to ask this question for a long time
Do we have any christians etc that are huge apes fans?
what does this movie say about religion or cults ?
do we relate this story to our own current society?
