I think if done right, the Apes' society can be shown to mirror many historic theocracies, 20th century societies that are totalitarian like communists or facists, and more recently the Taliban. Especially true when they blew up the Buddist (Hindu?) statues in Afganistan. It reminded me of Zaius in cave in the forbidden zone. Also, this would explain the limited availability of certain technology such as automatic weapons when the city looked like Fred Flitstone's beloved Bedrock. The high council only allowed certain old human technology to be used as THEY saw fit. Very interesting paralell. Oh, and yes I am a Christian.

That's what Burton said in his commentary. He wanted to leave it "open-ended" for the sequels. You could pretty much do anything with it (and it would be an improvement).

Did anyone read the original?  The ending was "Americanized" from the French novel.  It could've been Earth, it could've been a twin to Earth, Thade could've gone back in time...

What I didn't like about the ending to the 2001 remake was the statue
of General Thade in the Jefferson Memorial. That didn't make sense
to me, given that Thade and the other apes were on a totally
different planet from Earth. At least, that's the impression I got.
Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

I am a practicing Christian AND a firm believer in evolution so I have no problem with that aspect of the films...and I believe that nothing happens on this Earth unless God wants it to...so if the apes DID take over it would be God's will not Caesar's or Aldo's or whoever's. And it stands to reason that any civilization would have series of religious beliefs that reflected their 'species' and culture hence the Lawgiver as the dominant prophet.

I, too, am a Christian, and I don't let movies get to me like that.
I look at them as nothing more than pure fantasy, meant to entertain,

Greetings, everyone. Here is a link to download a free papercraft of
the Statue of Liberty. I thought it would be cool to make your own 3D
diorama of the climax on the beach at the end of the first film. That
would be a cool companion piece to the Icarus dioramas that are
available. Enjoy!

Subject: BENEATH subway
.html
While watching an episode of Batman (on the American Life TV Network)
earlier this evening), I'm pretty sure I saw what would ultimately be
converted into the subway platform from BENEATH. There are two sets of
tracks, but I think the set was modified and built outward for BENEATH so
that there was only the one set. I could be imagining things and it could
even be two completely different sets, but both Batman and BENEATH had
the same Art Director (Jack Martin Smith) so even if that were the case
you'd expect there to be similarities.

Part Two is on next Friday at 9PM if anyone wants to take a look and see,
and the episode will start on that same set because that's where the
cliffhanger left off.

On a related topic, and episode of The Green Hornet a few weeks back was
filmed at the same shipyard from the end of ESCAPE. And scenes from
tonights episode were clearly shot on the Fox Ranch.

questions, but given the state of current cinema I'll bet it'll still
make no sense whatever -- if the rumor is true.

I don't see how a prequel would answer any of those questions.
It might tell us how the apes got in charge of the other planet,
but that was more or less answered in the first film.  Not much
of interest there.  Maybe a midquel would, but not much there
either.  Thade shows up first they try and use his genetically
advance monkeyness -- he turns the tables.  Leo pops up.
About as weak as the first one if you ask me.  The only
interesting thing they could do is what happens next.

Midquel, I like it.
How about...
A Kneequel - All the actors having to be kneeling.
A Treaquel - Where the film is a soppy syrupy happy happy joy outing.
A Geekquel - For the continuity boffins.
A Raquel - For Two reasons.
A Jekquel - A version from the Monster side.
A Fleaquel - The actors are replaced with a Flea Circus.
A Meekquel - eveyone mumbles and never make eye contact.
A Speilquel - Steven can Direct.
An Equalquel - Nobody gets one up on anyone or anything. ( Blank
film)
A Beakquel - A Version called Planet Of The Birds.
A Weekquel - Takes place over 1 week in realtime.
A Weakquel - Everyone is a coward.

Of now to write the outlines up for Fox....
Brendan.

Just for future reference, which episode of "Batman" would that be,
Chris?

Also, the art direction on PLANET, BENEATH and ESCAPE was principally
the job of William Creber. Jack Martin Smith was the supervising Head
of the Art Department at Fox for many years. Heads of departments
always got credit on movies back in those days, but the work was
usually done by those listed just under them.

Oh, good. Then you could post the scene on You Tube or something so we
can all see! Hint. Hint.

You don't have all the LAND OF THE GIANTS, do you? Because there's an
episode of that that shows the Grand Central Station set from BENEATH.

Rory, I have all of Land of the Giants, but they are on VHS and
packed away in storage. I'm trying to convert everything to DVD to
save space. I'll see if I can find a way to get the scenes from
Batman & Green Hornet and convert them to computer files to share,
once I find out what episodes they are.

The Land of the Giants episode is called "The Secret City of Limbo." It's from the second season.

You know what would have been great?  Each of the original movies could have had an entire "movie" made between them!  To bridge the gaps and tie up so many loose ends.

      PLANET to BENEATH

Zira and Cornelius' trial for "heresy"...how General Ursus came to power...Taylor passing through that rock wall illusion and being captured by the mutants, eventually placed in the cell...possibly showing scenes how Brent and Skipper were also in space, and how they too crash-landed (I still am going by Ansanaut's logic about how Brent and Skipper arrived in two separate ships, because Taylor's ship suffered structural damage when it crashed into Dead Lake and sank, and Skipper's also was a complete write-off...so where did the third functional ship come from, unless it was flown by Brent?)...the growing chimpanzee revolt...etc.

      BENEATH to ESCAPE

The major issue here would be as to how Dr. Milo found the third ship on their seaboard.  Also what would be great is seeing exactly how Taylor was treated by the mutant society before the arrival of Brent.  Certainly he couldn't have been kept in that cell all of the time!  I'd always thought that maybe Mendez or some of his assistants had told him a few things regarding their society...maybe not everything, mind you, because when Brent told him about the Bomb, he seemed surprised to learn about it...

      ESCAPE to CONQUEST

Whatever became of Lewis and Stevie?  And it would be great to have seen Caesar in childhood, with Armando teaching him everything pertaining to 20th-century Earth, in addition to training him for his circus.

      CONQUEST to BATTLE

Revolution On The Planet Of The Apes has done a fantastic job on this...I have all of the comics, but it too would've been great to had this filmed...

      BATTLE and beyond...

Marvel Comics, via the stories "Terror On The Planet Of The Apes", "Evolution's Nightmare", and other superb stories, has also done a great job here as well, but wouldn't you have liked to see these stories made into movies?

Anything would be better than a "prequel" to the 2001 Burton film.  Yecch.

Hunter's site is definately the one. From coloring pages, comics, to
downloadable Power Record sets. It's the website that's helped me share
my love of Planet of the Apes with my son & let him expereince so many

hoarding them so nobody else gets them.

End of Episode #17- 'True or False Face', and you'll see it at the beginning of #18 'Holy Rat Race'. I forgot to mention that you also see a phone booth in the background when they still had TELEPHONE across the top. I think in BENEATH though Brent was looking at one of those walkup pay phones that just has a hood over the top and down the sides. I'd have to double check. Take a look and see what you think. I mean, even the rocks over the subway tracks look familiar, though admittedly that's not something you're going to see a lot of variation on.

The Green Hornet episode with what I believe to be the ESCAPE shipyard is 'The Secret of the Sally Bell' (right at the beginning), and the episode from last Friday that appeared to be shot at the Fox Ranch was 'Seek, Stalk, and Destroy'. The scenes are at the middle and towards the end when The Green Hornet and Kato are going to where the stolen tank is being kept to try and negotiate it's return.

I'd be curious to see that segment from 'Land of the Giants' as well. In fact, I'll second Rory's suggestion for a You Tube clip showing these different things...   :-)

I sent a pretty detailed letter to someone at Fox recently listing the rarities that are out there that have yet to be officially released (i.e. the BENEATH NATO preview, the "That's Hollywood" episode covering all five films), suggestion for new commentary tracks by surviving cast & crew members, and some other odds and ends should there be 40th Anniversary Editions, Blu-Ray versions, etc. I also suggested that with future rereleases, any bonus material should be released with the respective film. For example, Don Taylor directing ESCAPE and J. Lee Thompson directing CONQUEST should be on ESCAPE and CONQUEST respectively, not PLANET. He responded pretty quickly and said that he was impressed with the information and would forward it to the people who would handle such things.

From there, I don't know what the next best step would be. E-mails to Fox Home video, another online petition like what was done for the extended BATTLE, or another approach altogether. It'd be easy enough to put together a detailed form letter and post it in the files section for everyone to cut & paste. Maybe
sending both e-mails and regular letters might help. Or these plus a petition.

I think it's too late for a 40th anniversary edition if it's not already in the pipeline. POTA has been done to death on DVD lately. But in 5 short years it'll be 50 years since the novel. Not that that has anything to do with DVD but that's quite a milestone. That's the true start of POTA.

        What does everyone think?

if you send several, but I guess emails and on-line petitions do
something too. I don't think there's a chance of separate special
editions of each of the sequels. The best you can hope for is a box
set of all five films with a new set of featurettes and perhaps
commentary tracks for each film. Personally, I'd rather hope for a new
40th Anniversary special edition of the classic original, then worry
        about the sequels later."

If the economy doesn't tank, the Blu-ray format takes off (not that the

I have to agree, John. I don't hate the 2001 version. Is it
inferior to the original? Absolutely. In pretty much every way
except for production value, in fact. But I do see things I like
about it. Several of the actors--Tim Roth in particular--are
fantastic. The look of the film is great, despite the Michael
Jackson-esque female chimps (I still have to wonder what the HELL
they were thinking with that one). And I actually quite liked the
novels and comics based on that film--much more than the actual film,
in fact. Unfortunately, POTA2001 also has a completely comatose
performance by Mark Wahlberg, truly horrid actors such as Estella
Warren (phenomenal to look at, sure...but hardly an actress),
characters with only half a dimension to them, and stupid humor
(Limbo....uggh). I really want to like the film, because it does
have some nice bits to it--and, depending on my mood, I actually do
like it sometimes. But ultimately, I consider it a failure. I don't
hate it the way many others do, but I do think it failed as a
followup to the original. It's a fun film at times...but since it's
inferior to the original, there's just no reason for it to have been

        Hi, Rory,

In truth, one reason the prequel novels (The Fall and Colony) are
great is that they barely even involve the film. They pick up with...

SPOLIER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO HASN"T READ THEM

...the crash of the Oberon, 3,000 years before the film, and explain
how that crew survived. The characters are far better written than
those on film, and the plot keeps the book moving along at a brisk
pace. The planet the station crashes on is inhabited by two
extremely dangerous predator species, each of which finds humans and
apes tasty, so the humans genetically breed the apes to be smarter
and stronger, in an effort to create a fighting force able to defeat
the creatures. However, the apes come to see their lot in life--bred
to fight and die so humanity can survive--as unfair. At the core of
the books is Semos, the ape savior mentioned in the film (and an
anagram of Moses), who is raised by a human woman with a son the same
age. His name is David. The two brothers are inseparably close, so
when they get older and Semos sees the reality of the apes'
existence, he and David find themselves on opposite sides of the
conflict. I highly recommend both books, the central themes of which
        are familial betrayal and racism/genocide.

There are two others as well (Force and Resistance), that are also
good reads, though those two might be less to your liking since they
are more directly conencted to the film. Those novels (written on a
young-adult level) take place several years before the film, when
Attar is a cadet, Ari is a teenager who gets into a lot of trouble,
Daena is being trained to be the future leader of her people, and
Thade is rising up through the ranks. I liked them, though being Y/A
books, they're not quite the same as The Fall and Colony.

Hi Mario !  I am - and already had heard about Depp wanting to do Barnabus(spelling looks wrong, oh well) -they hadn't mentioned any director at that time - I agree with you - hope it will not be Burton.  The original DS is pretty hard to replace - they found that out years ago - even with Grayson Hall's son writing scripts.  I was not a big fan of 2001 Apes either.

I know. They were also on the two disc version of BEHIND. My point in mentioning them to Fox was to illustrate how the additional materials would be best included with the movie that said material is most closely related to. I figured that it couldn't hurt to suggest it.

If you rent from Netflix, you can also see Robert Gunner, and PLANET DP
Leon Shamroy, in a 1967 Doris Day movie called CAPRICE, and you can
really see a lot of Robert Gunner in a Vincent Price movie called THE
JACKALS (1967). Netflix has them both. You can have a day of Robert
        Gunner.

Well given that the Ancient Romans decried the early Christians
as ''atheists'' due to their practice of believing in only one god and
not multiple gods like the romans did,and given that the apes had

I'd reckon it is a bit of a moot point..all the apes did was when they

what the christians did when they went around converting the so called

The problem is that you're giving them too much credit to extrapolate that.

The BTS footage from Escape and Conquest were on the 2 disc Behind DVD but that was not a FOX DVD release so it is irrelevant. And they were only on the 2nd disc of the 35th Anniversary release for Planet, not in the Legacy box set edition which was the latest release. They'll just see that request as something already done in the last release and move on. They won't get the point. These are not smart people. You have to spell things out for them.

A better tactic would have been to stoke their egos by thanking them for including the BTS footage on the Escape and Conquest DVDs, respectively, and then ask that any additional BTS stuff be included on the proper films disc when they are released in Blu-Ray format.

to the series and Hestons over-the-top scene.  It ran much
smoother.  You can do the same thing with Blue Velvet.
A friend of mine just cut all the scenes that didn't feature
Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth.  I think it ran 20 mins.

Dark Shadows is an amazing series - my favorite TV Series ever
I had never seen it being too young.  It was cancelled before I was born
but i bought the first dvd box set in June 2006
and after a week I was hooked
I watched all 1225 episodes in 8 months
and my sister even got hooked and watched them all as well
they are all available easily on dvd through ebay etc.

I like werewolves and vampires and all things monster, but I never got
into DS. It always looked cheap to me, even when I first saw it in '66
when it was on ABC. I guess it's because soap operas are shot on video
and are mostly just talk, talk, talk. I did like the opening credits
to DS, and the first movie they did was OK.

I was a big fan of Dark Shadows in the sixties, as well. I remember
rushing home after school to watch it every afternoon. The short-
lived remake was not very good, though. I have both of the
movies, "House of Dark Shadows" & "Night of Dark Shadows" on VHS, and
recently converted them to DVD. The episodes on DVD are a huge
collection, and will take a while to collect.

Well, I sometimes got into it, but it would lose me again.

Anyway, I liked NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS and that had in it Thayer David,
Count Saknussem in JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH which was
produced by Fox, which later made PLANET OF THE APES, and now this
thread is a little less OT!

And so it ends and I don't want to let it go without making some comment.

So was it any good? Debatable – I'm sure you either loved it or hated
it. Was it perfect? Of course not, was it fun? Hell yeah!

I've heard each and every episode in what became something of a
routine, I'd download onto my iPod and listen in on the journey to and
from work. As I said before it's hard to judge `stylistic' choices –
they are just that, a matter of personal taste. Some things I would
have done different - but that doesn't necessarily mean for the better.

The voice cast were variable – it's a given that some would be more
talented and that some would be more suited to their roles than others
but it would be really petty and mean for me to single anybody out.
The one thing I truly believe is that everybody gave it their best and
I can't ask anyone for more than that.

There were moments throughout the production when I laughed along with
the drama and, I confess there were moments where I laughed at it. The
(IMHO) somewhat comic sound effects used when Taylor was getting
beaten by the guards gave me a fit of the giggles but hey! – I often
        laugh at inappropriate moments.

Most was easy to follow, some was confusing (Taylor's last broadcast
        message? Couldn't make that out!).

I have to say that I think Bill is 100%, certifiably, insane for even
considering a project of this scope. Having helped produce an audio
drama myself – and in only a very small capacity - my mind just
freezes at the sheer number of obstacles he would have faced along the
way. The variable quality of recordings, the lack of commercially
available sound FX, the need to express what characters were seeing
through audio alone, the inability to ask for alternate takes, the
frustration of knowing a single, missed, fraction of a beat has
spoiled a scene… The list goes on, and on, and on… That the results
were even coherent is nothing short of a miracle and a true testament
        to the man's determination.

Sure, if this were from a professional studio I'd be a lot less
forgiving, but Bill's an amateur – I don't mean that in a mean
spirited way, but in the purest sense of the word – doing what he does
for love or passion. Doing this from a bedroom, or garage, or
wherever. No funding, and using (compared to a Pro studio) budget
        equipment…

If you just stop for a moment and think about any of that, then IMHO
what he achieved really is remarkable.

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't remember all the contributors to
this disc, as some of the items were sent in a couple of years ago.
Much of this disc's contents came from Cougar. Whitty contributed the
contents from the Japanese DVDs, Greg contributed the U.S. laserdisc
extras, a couple of the items came from my collection, and, sadly,
I've forgotten who sent the rest (the CBS promos, the CBS Fall TV
Preview---great finds, and I'm embarrassed that I've lost track of who
sent them). In any case, thanks to everyone!

Here is a expert from Charlton Heston's book 'The Actor's Life'. This entry in his journal was made 40 years ago today after a test screening of PLANET OF THE APES:

January 30. The APES running tonight was successful. The film comes off very well, including the black comment. I was a little disappointed in my own performance. There didn't seem to be enough weight to it, somehow. Some of it was cut, of course, but I still felt let down. All the talk afterward was good, but you can discount most of that.

[This seems to have been my opinion when I first saw APES, thouh I'm very proud of the film now. I guess I expected a little more. You always expect a little more.]

Anyone who wants to buy the book can find it through Amazon.com.

Thanks to John Roche and Rory Montieth for their help on this.
