The
original movie was rated 'A' in the UK, so legally, at aged 7, I wouldn't
have been old enough unless accompanied by an adult, I guess my parents

My Dad took me out to see it.
He also took me to Bonnie & Clyde
so the bare-assed scenes in POTA
were pretty tame in comparison to that.

Dave
Don't feel too bad. I mentioned an African village that had
been
wiped out by a massive bubble of CO2 in Eviro-Sci and when
questioned I had to say I dunno, saw it on The Discovery Channel.
They just laughed including the Prof. But he was eating crow
when I emailed him a number of articles about it. Sure there
are
doctors who may be too busy to keep learning, but what's you
excuse if you teach for a living? Just a dumb ass with a

What I want to know is where did they send the rescue team?
To the middle of the ocean? Or down to the television station?

What's worse all the neighborhood theaters that were around when I was a kid are all gone; the Marboro where I saw Beneath & Escape, the Kingsway where I saw Conquest and the Fortway where they did the live POTA musical. They've all closed.

sometime in late '68, I guess it was, and this other kid was telling me how he saw PLANET with this movie "with cavemen being chased by dinosaurs." Now my parents had told me long ago that men didn't live at the same time as dinosaurs, so I told this kid that was nuts. I thought he was making it up. I just couldn't believe he saw something that ridiculous. Anyway, a few years later I figured out what he was talking about and I finally saw ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. on the late movie. I thought it was pretty strange. I guess when it was originally released on Feb. 21, 1967, I just never saw a commercial for it and it wasn't anything my parents were interested in. Now it's one of my guilty pleasure movies. It's really a stinky movie, but I like it. Raquel Welch, Martine Beswick, Ray Harryhausen creatures and a bizarre score by Mario Nascimbene. Hell,

The most recent broadcast and podcast features SF author Robert J. Sawyer expounding on the virtues of Science Fiction (and the original Star Trek) and the vices of Star Wars. Have a listen | MP3| to his 40 minute lecture and be blown away! RJS' analysis is solid, and his delivery is absolutely Shatnerian. Also under the microscope are the film of Planet Of The Apes and novelist Michael Crichton. Here's the official description:
"Author Robert J. Sawyer explains how Hollywood's approach to science fiction, starting with George Lucas's Star Wars, has dulled the edge that made science fiction such a pertinent film genre. The Producers didn't really give us viewers a lot of credit did they?
David Watson stood in for Roddy McDowall and it was assumed that no
one would ever notice. If Maurice Evans had not been able to reprise
his role as Zaius, Jonathan Harris was suggested as a replacement,
because, "no one would ever notice". Was that the reasoning behind
that awful looking primitive gorilla that strangles Milo? How about
Roddy's stunt double/stand in on the TV show who sticks out like a
sore thumb every second he's on screen?
I love these movies, warts and all, and this isn't a rant, I'm just
having fun - I thought I'd better point that out in case no one

.htmlI have not heard Robert Sawyer's broadcast so cannot comment on
anything he said. But I would be careful about claiming that Star
Wars is not SF. It is closer to something known as Science Fantasy a
legitimate sub genre of SF which has an unbelievable scope covering
everything from Political, Psychological, Mechanical or Sociological
speculation.
I know that some like exclusivity to pertain to their particular
definition of a genre.
Hard SF for the Engineer minded.
Science Fantasy for the adventure thrill seeking type etc.
Lets not become like many other Literary Pigeon Holers here.
Planet is an SF and a Science Fantasy picture both. As I think is
Star Wars. Arguments can be made for and against.
Star Wars had Hard ware based on Tech as well as Magic ( the Force)
which could be argued is a Psychically/telepathically generated
source of Natural energy. Either way.
Planet has talking Apes who somehow arrived at this through a magic
leap in evolution, plus Beneath had those Telepathic Force type
mutant thingees.
Is Planet Space Opera? No. There are no Space Battles involving
planet hopping and masses of Tech.Empires with vast cultural depth.
It is mostly an action adventure pulp story satarising or
metaphoring? the culture who made the film.
The Icarus is a Macguffin. Something to get the plot started. The
major part of the film is Sociological What Ifs with action and
adventure to keep the kids in us watching.
It is my favourite Movie and my favourite SF movie. But Star Wars (
the one Pukas changed to Episode IV New Hope) is also one of my
favourite SF movies.Becuase it is SF.
SF used to be known as Scientific Romances, then it become
Speculative Fiction, then Sci-Fi and now more commonly SF. It is a
huge genre. Room for Apes and Jedi...
Brendan.

| Subject: Re: Podcast (40 minute lecture) by Robert J. Sawyer re: Science Fict |
.htmlWhat an interesting thought. Star Wars set SF back 30 years?
I'll have to differ with you on this one James.
Don't think of it as Popularist Entertainment in a negative
way.Think of it as something that reached a massive amount of people
and then it inspired many of those people to search out more SF in
Film, books, TV or other media.
The same way Planet inspired me to do just that. Along with
Heinlein,Andre Norton and Edgar Rice Burroughs did.
Apes is not a perfect movie. So what, we love it.
Star Wars is the same. Not perfect but we love it.
In fact Star Wars promoted more then denigrated SF. Not only by
getting more involvement from people and business.
Greg Bear wrote a Star Trek Novelisation early in his career and is
no doubt one of the current top respectable SF authors out there.
There is more SF to choose from now in part down to Star Wars. It
has earned that acknowledgment. I leave the choice to the individual
to determine what they find palatable.
I saw 2001 in 1974. I was 11. I hated it.Even then I thought it
pretentious overblown drivel.Bored me silly. My mate also hated
it.Funny that we both loved Planet though. I was reading Arthur C
Clarke novels around the same time. Loved them. Hard SF. Also read
and loved DUNE at this time.
But visually 2001 bored me. It didn't inspire me. I still hate it
even though I quote HAL like everyone else.
My point is that SF like verything else is 'What you Like' Try not
to demean it by threatening it's place in the genre. We will never
know the debt or lack there-of owed for to film. That is a What If
scenario, fun, but just that.
When I had an SF Bookshop I realised the impact Star Wars had. Many
readers became such, because of Star Wars and yes, John, even Star
Trek.
The thing that I believe has set SF back 30 years is the number of
modern Sf writers who have forgotten how to tell an entertaining
story and who focus overly on the technical and not the Human
Characteristics of the characters. Good Technical and Human Authors
are difficult to find.
This is also eveident in the films where Technicians with wonderful
computer techniques, cannot put across a story.
Lucas - went to the age old Joseph Campbell based Myths to tell an
age old story with characters. People like that.Thats why it worked.
Kubrick - Technically Elite Movie maker, but dead boring. Only a few
want to see silent shots for 20- 30 minutes of spaceships on strings
set to classical music. ( I don't go to the Ballett either)
The Plethora of SF available - good, bad, ugly is partly down to
Star Wars, partly down to Apes and in no way (maybe an iota)to 2001.
But basically, this is just a Beatles versus Bach , Rockwell versus
Picasso discussion.
Brendan.
sorry for the length of the post.

.html So I just got back from Las Vegas.....No I didn't lose
too much!.....
I headed over to Planet Hollywood in Caesar's Palace
to see the Ursus uniform I'd seen pics of......but
alas he is no longer there as they rotate
displays....the teenage hostesses told me to go to the
new Planet Hollywood hotel (formerly the Aladin)
because they had heard of a Planet of the Apes exhibit
there.....
At the hotel , the concierge told me that it's
probably in the mezzanine display case.....
It was not.....only pictures of rock and roll
stars....a woman behind the desk told me she'd never
seen any Ape stuff but she heard that there was a POTA
themed suite!!
went to the font desk......turns out they have many
suites with different movies as themes....i.e. "Pulp
Fiction", "Die Hard" etc....alll with props and
costumes from the films......the very nice (and
attractive) desk clerk looked for Apes and couldn't
find one....she called her supervisor....
Alas, the supervisor said "It's not there anymore...."
So my wild goose chase ended....but the thought of
being able to stay in a POTA themed suite got me quite
excited!
I'm assuming the costumes etc. went back into the vast
PH storage somewhere!

.htmlIf they ever would do a stamp (and don't hold your breath that they will), why buy so many of them? With the way the keep jacking up the price for postage, you'd have to pair an APES stamp with some ugly "rate increase" stamp to get it to the correct amount. In the very unlikely event of an APES stamp, just buy a book or two as a collectible and buy yourself some more MEGO APES. Your money would be better spent. jessica rotich <jessicarotich@...> wrote: Well, if they ever produce a POTA stamp, I'll be buying hundreds of dollars' worth of it--enough to last me 3 or 4 years.

.htmlI already tried writing and emailing them about this. I pointed out that PLANET was a milestone in film-making and that it was nominated and voted into The Library of Congess as a significant and important American film. In their (form letter and form email) reply, they basically said "Our commitee receives hundreds of requests a year and to even be considered, it has to have some sort of historical, political, or social significance" (or words to that effect.) And, they said any idea submitted, if approved, may take a few years to even be released. I asked for their consideration a year and a half to two years ago in hopes that PLANET would be recognized and have a stamp for it's 40th Anniversary, and obviously it didn't come to pass their almighty committee and my guess it never will.

Do you, or anyone else, know in what order the scenes were filmed?
That might have effected decisions about the nose, but I'm guessing
it was intentional. Surely they did it to make it obvious that the

That's not exactly what happened.
She did trip over the lighting cables.
But it wasn't baby Milo that hurt her.
It was trying to save the baby from
the fall. It did scare him. But she
wouldn't give him back to the trainer
until she had calmed her baby, as a
good mother should. But it was the
fall that injured her and not the baby.
The offending cables were cleared
away before the next take but the
next day she found all sorts of bruises

What an excellent old building, Dave. Too bad it's a BINGO hall.
Around here BINGO is played in rundown old Grange Halls. I hope they
are bringing in enough money to keep it in good repair until the real
owner comes along.

.html I was too young to fully understand POTA when I first saw it, all I
took away from it at the time was that the hero cursed more than any
hero I'd seen before, and my parents made a big deal of the ending. So
as long as I can remember POTA was Earth. Given, now its ingrained in
us, with references on sitcoms & movies about the world being taken
over by apes, and anyone I screen it for who hasn't seen it before,
they see the ending a mile away. My question is, did the majority of
audiences on there first viewing in the 60's & 70's not figure out
ahead of time that it was earth?
The great Twilight Zone episode "I Shot an Arrow into the Air," which I
think of as the POTA precursor, had aired eight years earlier, and I
also was wondering if it was sort of a spoiler. <.html

It's OK, Tim. Jealous is good. Honestly, though, I think he was
protecting you. There is some seriously scary stuff at his place!!!
I'll give you the story I give my family. Any other just wouldn't be
quite true.
My daughter and I made the trip to meet Brian. Our driver left us
off at the corner of Devonshire and Topanga Canyon Blvd, across from
the local 7-Eleven. With cross-eyed looks from two seedy dudes
drinking coffee (?) we got our bearings and continued our journey. A
full eight blocks from the drop off point, we arrived at the given
address. Clearly a ploy to throw us off our mark, the location was
just a number on a door which existed between a laundry and a vacant
storefront. From there we contacted Brian for further instructions.
Writing as quickly as I could to get all the information recorded, I
scribbled the route that he wished us to take. We crossed Devonshire
and headed down the road, following the path just as Brian had
directed us. We continued down that route with a sense of danger and
apprehension. Soon, a vehicle arrived with a costumed figure in the
driver's seat. A human! "Are you Helen?" we heard him say? "Get in
the vehicle." We did.
We arrived to find a workshop full of
Well, I don't remember just what happened there in the workshop, but
I know we left under cloud of darkness (almost). I remember seeing
rocks and canyons, but this was a different route than the one we had
arrived by. I can't tell you how we got there or even how we got
back to our hotel. The fact is, it's all a blur.
I do have a secret contact number. You need to use a code to get the
number. The code is: www.apemania.com > ENTER > Contact Us. Beyond
that, I just don't know what to tell you. I know Brian is incredibly
busy, and I feel extremely important that he made time for us. He's
a hero to our family. Meeting Brian was like meeting my brother from
another mother.
Pictures? Well, yes, we did take pictures, but Brian has them all
right now. When he returns them, I'll pass them around. <.html

tell me more info about these figures and they say it will bring down
the value of the originals. Is this true and what do you think of this?

.htmlIt seems these postcards aren't just a phenomenon limited to American
soil, I've just had one arrive as well.
Thank you James, A simple and elegant idea that makes me feel a part
of something good.

.htmlGreetings, everyone. Here is the link to a photo I posted of an action
figure called "Astro-Ape", an action figure from the mid-seventies that
was supposed to be competition to the MEGO Apes figures. Needless to
say, it didn't last very long. As Zira would say, "It's so damned
ugly!" LOL I have to say I agree with her completely.

.htmlThere are scans for the ads on Hunter's site (https://pota.goatley.com/ads.html") but I heard from a reliable source that Diamond may have made the announcement a bit prematurely.

Personally I hate when companies do that. When Polar Lights re-issued all
those plastic hobby kits the prices on the Aurora and Addar originals dropped.
Why can't they release Mego "follow-ups" like different
characters and different costumes & packaging? How about new
playsets?
