OK, I see what you're saying now. I actually made a point of specifically
mentioning in the letter that all bonus material- previously released or new-
should be included with the movie it relates to. I figured since I had their
attention, the best thing to do would be to spell out as many
things as possible. Again, we'll see what happens.
Chris L.
>>The problem is that you're giving them too much credit to
extrapolate that. <<
>> I know. They were also on the two disc version of BEHIND. My point
in mentioning them to Fox was to illustrate how the additional
materials would be best included with the movie that said material is
most closely related to. I figured that it couldn't hurt to suggest it.

>>Jeff Burton is in a Joker episode of "Batman"
and Robert Gunner is in one of the "Green Hornet"s. Check IMDB
<<
Oh sure sure- take the *practical* approach and look it
up online at a very informative Movie Database... :-)
BTW, Did you see the weird "Plot Details" they have listed with Robert Gunner's
entry: 'Fall from Height' and 'Dog'. What?!?!?!?
Frustratingly, the episode of Green Hornet he appeared in was on the
week *before* I started watching on Friday nights. Literally "Missed it by THAT
much"...
Rory (again):
>>If you rent from Netflix, you can also see
Robert Gunner, and PLANET DP Leon Shamroy, in a 1967 Doris Day movie called
CAPRICE, and you can really see a lot of Robert Gunner in a Vincent Price
movie called THE JACKALS (1967). Netflix has them both. You can have a day
of Robert Gunner. <<
I could also get OUR MAN FLINT and pretty much see everything he ever
appeared in. Or IN LIKE FLINT and see Jeff Burton. Odd how both their careers
ended relatively early. In Gunner's case, right after PLANET. Wonder if it had
something to do with those uncredited roles they both had in a Jams Coburn
movie. Hmmmm.....

Nah, you just have to think of them as really ugly apes. ;-) Just
like people movies, the pretty apes got the closeups.

The background masks are my biggest bugaboo with the first two movies.
I think they were designed by Wah Chang, who created a lot of stuff
like that for other movies, but is best known for his work on the
original "Star Trek" including the "Gorn."

And I forgot to add that John Chambers HATED them, but I guess they
just didn't have the money OR time to makeup everybody as they should.
But they sure should have sculpted many different looks to the various
masks. Oh well, ancient history.
Hey, here's a project for James: screen capture one of the worst
background mask shots from the series, then do a photoshop "fix" using
either a correctly made-up ape from the movies, or a real-world simian
pic.
Knowing James, he'll just use George Bush!

.htmlSorry I took so long to get back to this Dave- at work and actually working-what is my boss thinking-LOL
As for the classic "you maniacs" line- yeah- I did blister the paint at my house here in west Texas-LOL. I recorded it along with the previous 2 episodes in a 3 hour recording session- so by the end my throat was trashed-LOL. And yeah- getting to step into Mr Hestons shoes for a short while was a gas!
Thank you btw for this critique, basically it's the pay one gets for doing amature/audio drama- and feedback is a welcome thing amigo! Though at times I have to steel myself to read because making one of these things is like wearing your heart on your sleeve- and you never know what people will think of something you are so close to and spend so many hours creating.
I am glad you had a fun ride- it was a blast to make- warts and all- and brought me back to the days as a kid when I would race home from school on my bike to catch the monster marathons/APE week on the after school movie specials on TV. And I hope that the fun and the enthusiam for the production came out. This was a bearar to coordinate, and I apologise for it getting off track for a month or 2...
The cast was culled from all over the globe- from New Zealand, to England, Canada and the US, and all people that wanted to go ape and bring this thing to life. Mixing this was fun and complicated, with the amount of actors involved, and all the things I wanted to do to get as close to a natural feel as I could soundwise-- so one could imagine they were there. As far as the mixing- it was TIME consuming but fun for me. I live to try and see how close I can bring reality of the visual to the aural environment. At times I think I was right on, and there were moments I would redo.
I hope the added bits of background went over ok. They were fun to figure out- and even more fun to try and fit into the story without losing the screenplay in the process.
The last broadcast was garbled up a bit intentionally so it could both be a recap and set up and leave a bit to the imagination etc... ;-)
And yes... You can send a straight jacket to me anytime Dave-LOL. I think my wife might agree with you on that nore-lOL... And btw- I LOVE your producction as well and was listening to it again on the way in amigo. GREAT STUFF.
And thank you again for taking the time to listen and to comment- Dave, thank you all here- for your friendship, for this SITE, for listening- for keeping the Simian Dream alive. I am humbled by this and by you all. Thank you.
I am 3 scripts in on the writing for Beneath POTA and having a ball. I will keep you all updated on the progress and let you know when it can be expected out.

Bill,

And so it ends and I don't want to let it go without making some comment.
So was it any good? Debatable – I'm sure you either loved it or hated it. Was it perfect? Of course not, was it fun? Hell yeah!
I've heard each and every episode in what became something of a routine, I'd download onto my iPod and listen in on the journey to and
from work. As I said before it's hard to judge `stylistic' choices – they are just that, a matter of personal taste. Some things I would have done different - but that doesn't necessarily mean for the better.
The voice cast were variable – it's a given that some would be more talented and that some would be more suited to their roles than others but it would be really petty and mean for me to single anybody out.
The one thing I truly believe is that everybody gave it their best and I can't ask anyone for more than that.
There were moments throughout the production when I laughed along with the drama and, I confess there were moments where I laughed at it. The
(IMHO) somewhat comic sound effects used when Taylor was getting beaten by the guards gave me a fit of the giggles but hey! – I often laugh at inappropriate moments.
Most was easy to follow, some was confusing (Taylor's last broadcast
message? Couldn't make that out!).
I have to say that I think Bill is 100%, certifiably, insane for even considering a project of this scope. Having helped produce an audio drama myself – and in only a very small capacity - my mind just
freezes at the sheer number of obstacles he would have faced along the way. The variable quality of recordings, the lack of commercially available sound FX, the need to express what characters were seeing through audio alone, the inability to ask for alternate takes, the
frustration of knowing a single, missed, fraction of a beat has spoiled a scene… The list goes on, and on, and on… That the results were even coherent is nothing short of a miracle and a true testament to the man's determination.
Sure, if this were from a professional studio I'd be a lot less forgiving, but Bill's an amateur – I don't mean that in a mean spirited way, but in the purest sense of the word – doing what he does
for love or passion. Doing this from a bedroom, or garage, or wherever. No funding, and using (compared to a Pro studio) budget equipment…
If you just stop for a moment and think about any of that, then IMHO
what he achieved really is remarkable.

His "Heloise" chimp suit is great (and I just remembered it also
appears in a classic "Outer Limits" episode that features a great John
Chambers makeup creation, the first season episode "The Sixth Finger"),
BUT that gorilla suit in ESCAPE really sucks. Too bad the studio
didn't know at the time who Rick Baker was and that he was already
making better gorilla suits. Check out THE AMAZING TWO-HEADED

ads (same image) for the upcoming retro MEGO figure reissues. I've
scanned the ad and the listing for them (list price: $18.99, first two
figures are Cornelius and "Soldier Ape") and added them to my site:

I saw it briefly once when the computer was acting slowly, but now it's loading rather fast and I can barely glimpse at it. I think it's got a great shot of Ape City. Could this photo be found somewhere in the files? I wanted to make a mini Ape City (Mego-sized) in my garden and I would like to print the photo as a reference.
Thanks, Jessica.

If you want both 1 and 2, just add an extra dollar to the amount. So
that would make it $3.50 for U.S. addresses and $4.50 for non-U.S.
addresses for both Rarities 1 and 2.
If you only want Rarities 1, it's $2.50 for U.S. addresses and $3.50

All copies of Rarities 2 requested as of yesterday have been mailed.

priceless. And I always wondered what the lobby looked like at the 30th
Anniversary screening. Plus you have footage Starcon panel that I
missed! Many thanks to all that were involved for sharing! A couple of
observations-
Charlton Heston quotes over and over that POTA was the first of the
space operas, before Star Wars and Star Trek. Star Trek was before
apes, correct?
I'm thankful someone at AMC had the good sense to put that vest on Kim
Hunter in subsequent bumpers...
Leonard Marltin calling Edward G. Robinson in the test footage Dr.
Zoose (rhymes with Dr. Seuss, or Mother Goose)is an unbelievable faux
pas for a man that makes a living critiquing films. <.html

I imagine Heston was referring to the Trek movie franchise and not the

I wouldn't give Heston credit for having that much of an imagination.
Listen, I liked Heston and I love many of his movies, but in many ways
Chuck wasn't the brightest of guys. I think he closed off from his
mind many things he didn't care for, and I'll bet one of those was the
world of Science Fiction film. Sure, he made a few, but that was for
the paycheck, including PLANET, but especially OMEGA MAN and SOYLENT
GREEN, but other than that I'm sure SF was a genre he definitely wasn't
into. So, being someone who doesn't function well in public without a
script, a script was written for Heston, by him, or his wife, or his PR
man, whoever, that could be called the "What you say when asked about
APES" script. Chuck started using that "first Space Opera" line way
back in the very early eighties after STAR WARS had eclipsed APES.
He's repeated it often. I remember in the seventies when Chuck still
made frequent appearances on talk shows to promote whatever crappy
disaster movie he'd just finished, and he had a whole repertoire of tag
lines about the various movies he was most associated with. If Johnny
Carson mentioned KHARTOUM, I knew it wouldn't be long before Chuck
would talk about how nasty the camels were and how they "were a horse
designed by a committee." And I forget now what his standard lines
were to BEN-HUR or THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. Chuck was the kind of guy,
like one of our ex-presidents, that I could imagine had a drawer in his
desk full of "things to say when you're asked," and I could imagine his
wife prepping him on them before his appearances and making sure his
fly was closed and such things. That was the wonderful world of Chuck.
I'm sure T would agree. And now Chuck's world has shrunk to much less
than that.

As interesting as it is/was to hear Heston talk about Apes, I have to say that after hearing his "space opera" quote for the umpteenth time, it got rather old. First of all, APES is not a "space opera." Hardly any of it takes
place in space! What the hell is a "space opera" anyway? Flash
Gordon? Star Wars? I'd call those things "Pulp Science Fiction," not
something stupid like "space opera." Heston didn't know or care squat
about Sci-Fi.
There were plenty of other QUALITY Science Fiction films before PLANET.
PLANET's distinction is only this... It was the first Science Fiction
film that starred a first-rung Hollywood star, i.e. Chuck. That and
the fact that it was one of the best Science Fiction films Hollywood
had produced in years AND that it was a huge hit, some might say even a
small cultural phenomenon, are it's main distinctions.

|
.html I don't know if this story is true, but it made me laugh....
Christina Ricci was sexually assaulted by a chimpanzee on the set of
her latest movie, 'Penelope.'
The actress, who already has a phobia of the animal, revealed Chim Chim
grabbed her left breast while she was filming 'Penelope'.
Christina - who plays a woman born with a pig's nose in the movie -
said: "I'm afraid of monkeys, but I had decided not to be afraid of
Chim Chim because no one else is. I thought, 'Everyone else thinks he's
awesome so just be cool.'
"It's the first day of shooting and I have this kitchen scene where I'm
sitting down and Chim Chim is sitting right next to me. Of course, it
freaks out during the take and grabs my left breast and will not let
go, and he's so strong."
Christina was so terrified she had to be rescued by her fellow
co-stars, including Reese Witherspoon, James McAvoy and Richard E.
Grant.
She revealed: "I'm so freaked out and the rest of the actors are facing
the other way so no one sees that this has happened to me and I'm like,
'Help, help' as quietly and calmly as possible so this thing does not
freak out any further.
"Finally they got him off me but my fear is completely validated and I
did not go near him for the rest of the shoot. Monkeys are crazy and
you never what they'll grab onto - I don't like unpredictable animals."

I looked up the Walker Theatre at:
http://cinematreasures.org/theater/1597/
Seems like it was a nice theatre. Too bad it's no more.
I remember being on a playground sometime in late '68, I guess it was,
and this other kid was telling me how he saw PLANET with this movie
"with cavemen being chased by dinosaurs." Now my parents had told me
long ago that men didn't live at the same time as dinosaurs, so I told
this kid that was nuts. I thought he was making it up. I just couldn't
believe he saw something that ridiculous. Anyway, a few years later I
figured out what he was talking about and I finally saw ONE MILLION
YEARS B.C. on the late movie. I thought it was pretty strange. I
guess when it was originally released on Feb. 21, 1967, I just never
saw a commercial for it and it wasn't anything my parents were
interested in. Now it's one of my guilty pleasure movies. It's really
a stinky movie, but I like it. Raquel Welch, Martine Beswick, Ray
Harryhausen creatures and a bizarre score by Mario Nascimbene. Hell,
it's even got Percy Herbert in it! What's not too like?

"Dinosaurs lived and died out long before the first man appeared on
Earth."
This was the bold statement I made in front of my class when I was
about seven - and became a laughing stock! Even the teacher told me I
was an idiot... "What about cavemen?" she reminded me.
I still feel pangs of resentment at how unfair it all was. Do teachers
learn from books or the movies?

Sadly, there are apparently people who believe that men and dinosaurs
lived at the same time---after all, they also believe the world is
only 6,000 years old.

Did you go to a religious school or something? That teacher should
have been shot! That story is amazing and scary, truly scary. I can't
believe how the basic sciences aren't being taught properly in schools
these day -- and I guess for the last couple decades at least. We
really are threatened by a future with a population of people who are
complete idiots, just buying stupid things and getting fat and dying.
Boulle could have been a profit. The human race is regressing. There
will be a elite class of people who know how everything works, and
they'll rule over a vast majority of asses who know nothing except "I
want! I want!"

Don't tell any more people. You have almost ruined my plans for world
domination.
A recent survey about historical people in the UK found that one
third of all people surveyed believed that Sherlock Holmes, Robin
Hood and King Arthur were all real people. Not the figures that some
think are the source for the myths but the actual Myths. The same
number thought Florence Nightengale (This isn't a spelling survey!)
and Winston Churchill were fictional characters.
If this was done in The US I imagine many would think The
Terminator, Paul Bunyan and George Bush were real. We know better...

You mean most people in the US think about such things at all?
I kind of doubt it.

The original movie was rated 'A' in the
UK, so legally, at aged 7, I wouldn't have been old enough unless
accompanied by an adult, I guess my parents must have felt I was too

From the time I could first talk dinosaurs fascinated me. When
my parents would take me to the American Museum of Natural History
here in New York I would explain all the exhibits to them in detail. After
about ten minutes of this we would turn around and see a crowd following us,
listening to everything I said!

the drive-in theater, which was the big movie experience of my day.
I fell in love with it from the first viewing. And by the way,
Hunter, anyone who believes the world is older than 6,000 years old
is doomed to fall off the edge one day. LOL
