To paint his head probably a good 8 hours (I'm including taking a
toothpick and picking off whatever the nailpolish remover couldn't
do) TWICE. This is the third paint job on that same head, and it's
my first human that I have painted. I don't remember how long it
took to make his outfit. Probably lots of time, but time well spent
because it was POTA-related... I don't remember really...I've been
working on this particular doll since Feb. 28 when I get home from
work.
Hopefully I can find the pants I made so I could take a whole body
shot. I still need to whip up a backpack and real leather shoes,
since the plastic ones I was trying to put on him tore.

When he first performed his Right of Spring it caused a riot. No

early 70's they were the rule rather than the exception and POTA
one if the pioneers of it. You can still hear it ripped off in
Kung

I doubt it, Jeff. In 'Sunshine' the Spacecraft are aptly named before
filming because their mission is to (almost) fly deliberately into the
sun. In APES the name Icarus is a fan invention.

Based on the schedule for what's currently showing...
looks like they show movies at 2 PM, 5 PM and 8 PM.
I have a feeling PLANET will be shown every day at various times and will
alternate with BENEATH and ESCAPE on one day, and CONQUEST and BATTLE on
others...

| Subject: Boulle's Ending to Proposed "Planet of Man" Realized (Sort Of) In Re |
|
.html French author Pierre Boulle, author of the original "Planet of the Apes" book, was offered
an opportunity to propose his own sequel to the first POTA movie and scripted "The Planet
of Man" which ends with Dr. Zaius re-trained and reconditioned to perform as a circus ape
and barely able to utter any intelligible response as he performs in a circus for the
entertainment of an audience of now-rehabilitated, -civilized and -speaking huma beings.
Of course, in the summer of 1976, since I hadn't yet learned about that little factoid, I
was unanble to appreciate the irony when the traveling Hanneford Circus visited Monroe,
Louisiana. (This small traveling circus was probably about the size as that of Armando's in
"Escape.") Had I known, I might otherwise have been prompted to also take a still camera
also with me instead of just my Super 8 movie camera (yes, folks, I've got physical
evidence of this one). What prompted me to attend was that they were were advertising
the circus as featuring a tribute to the characters from the "Planet of the Apes" movies.
However, I couldn't tell from their flyers whether they were using imagery from the stills of
the movies or not.
When the main event arrived during the circus, into the center rings of the circus rode
General Ursus and a number of gorillas on horseback accomapanied by a number of
soldier gorillas on foot all the world appearing to be pursuing Dr. Zaius, Cornelius and Zira
on foot. I shall spare you the details except to say that Dr. Zaius & Company would not
have been flattered by all the cavorting they did around the circus rings. Sorry, no
dialogue-scene re-enactments from the movies. No opportunity to get one's photograph
taken with the characters (which *would* have been a better draw and money-maker). No
scintillating evening with either Bill or Paul Blake to offer us even a faithful glimpse of the
personalities of our beleoved POTA characters.
I as a POTA fan felt so ultimately humiliated about how the Hanneford Circus had
staged their so called "tribute" to the Planet of the Apes characters that when I first read
about the ending to Boulle's proposed "Planet of Man" sequel, I couldn't help but
appreciate the awful irony that what I'd seen in the Hanneford Circus had been quite
humiliating enough for Dr. Zaius, I would not have relished seeing his character portrayed
as having been reduced to a near speechless (it not totally speechless) primate.
I don't know whether the Hanneford Circus had purchased those left-over POTA
costumes and make-up appliances from the studio or other studio-prop warehouse, but
they certainly wasted an opportunity to have more fun with the concept since the main
POTA characters seemed to be wearing the actual make-up appliances and not just masks.
By the way, what ever became of Zira & Cornelius re-enactors Bill & Paula Blake? <.html

In addition to the additional/unused material, have you gleaned any major new info or
anecdotes as the result of the publication of the first edition of POTA REVISITED that may
have come your way via the Internet?
Does 20th Century-Fox grant access to its own archives on the POTA movies?

Still, a post-mortem of Burton's POTA might very well underscore how unique and
classic in their own right the original POTA movie series was.
I would also like to see more info about the different anniversariy celebrations (40th,
30th, etc.) commemorating the movie series. <.html

| Subject: Finding Milo Project... |
.htmlIn Escape, you will remember the baby chimp named by Cornelius and
Zira to be [Baby] Milo. Although two chimpanzees were imported to
play the baby chimps, one chimpanzee did not survive the trip so the
remaining chimp played both parts (Planet of the Apes Revisited,
2001). What a clever chimp -- and at such a young age!
That chimpanzee baby was the only "real" chimp to have appeared in any
of the five original POTA movies. My question has been... whatever
happened to that chimp?
Over a period of time, I searched for Baby Milo. I was fortunate to
talk by phone with several people along the way who had an interest in
chimpanzees and the film industry -- both as trainers and as rescuers.
Some of you have been contacted and some have been involved in the
search. I've talked with Mark Beckoff (Partner in animal study with
Jane Goodall), Dan Westfall (Owner of Cheeta the Chimp -- World's
Oldest Known Chimpanzee), Wally Swett (Primarily Primates), and even
Robin Dickson (the daughter of Roy Kabat -- Baby Milo's trainer).
As far as we can tell from video clips of Milo during training, the
chimp's name is Kelley. With that small amount of information, we
were able to track her to a zoo in the Midwest and even within
whiskers of the Primarily Primates Sanctuary in Amarillo, TX. Walley
Swett believes he turned her owner away when she was looking for a
place for Kelley.
Anyway, I came to a standstill at a facility in Bastrop, TX: MD
Anderson Cancer Center. I have the name of the guy I spoke with, but
I don't remember off the top of my head. He was pleasant, but did
warn me not to get too excited. It's hard to track down specific apes
if their history has been lost. Most travel about with little more
than a name, and many times that is changed or lost as well. The age
of a chimp is often estimated and is likely to be off by two or more
years in any direction.
If this is our Kelley she is presently employed as a nurse aunt at the
facility. That is good news. At the time when I spoke with the
fellow at Bastrop, Kelley's job was to raise the chimps that are bred
for use in the facility. She lives in a compound with other chimps,
is presumably well cared for (as she has an important job), and is
well-liked by the people who work at the facility.
I have no update, except that a few minutes ago I found this webpage
on the internet and thought I would share. http://tinyurl.com/3cv5tv
Click on the link "Who's There?" to open a list of the chimpanzees
at the facility. Follow the list down until you find Kelley. I
believe it is reasonably likely that is our Baby Milo. (Project R&R,
2007.)

*** I can honestly say it did nothing for me.
While I appreciate attempts at things like that, I
think doing an original story would have been a better way to go (ala "GOING HOME"). But, then again with so many changes and additions to the material, it might as well have been touted as an original production. It was not the PLANET that is so great to me. You cannot improve on perfection and PLANET is one of thse untouchable things in my book. ***

I thought the dinghy was there as merely hindight, just in case of a
accidental water landing. But by design, the ship looks like it
probably had some sort of landing gear, maybe close to a Space
Shuttles. In one scene inside the ship I think it was Langdon that
said "What happened? We wern't programed to land in the water." My
take of the shaky nose cone shots of the ship as it was on re-enty,
was that the ship's computer was malfunctioning, therefore the crash. <.html

And yet, comparatively speaking, while it wasn't POTA, Arthur C. Clarke & Stanley
Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" did feature humans' ancient ape-like ancestors about
whom many humans today are still in denial a la Dr. Zaius. (Remember Zaius' dismissive
remarks about Cornelius' interpretation of artifacts including bones of primitive apes
found in different archelogical strata layers?)
It's sadder still that although Clarke lived to see "2001's" 40th Anniversary, we'll have to
make do with whatever remaining pre-written & pre-recorded commemorations and
tributes he'd prepared in advance.
By the way, has Arthur C. Clarke ever been quoted as acknowledging seeing "Planet of
the Apes" before? Since it was in a sense "2001's" other sf competitor in 1968, I wonder
what his reaction was/might have been to the film-adapted version of Boulle's work. <.html

of the Apes":
"In 1969, Planet of the Apes won an Oscar for Best Make-Up for their
apes, despite looking a lot less realistic than the apes in 2001.
Arthur C. Clarke said "2001 did not win the Academy Award for makeup
because judges may not have realised the apes were actors". "2001: A
Space Odyssey" won an Oscar in 1968 for Special Effects, as well as
BAFTAs for Cinematography and Production Design."

Hey, thanks Tim. Looks like only PLANET is going to be shown.
It also looks like I'm not going to be able to get up to New York until March
30th or the 31st, so I'll have to miss the probably better attended weekend
showings. I'll probably sit through the movie more than once, just to take
in the big screen glory.

I'm actually planning on shooting video (hopefully I won't be thrown out of

To anyone going,
We've found, with Simian Scrolls, that if you contact the organizers
BEFORE hand, tell them who you are and what you want, they are
generally quite helpful on the day. My advice is for Tim, James, Rory
and whoever else may be attending to get yourselves organized and
contact the theatre. The worst that can happen is that you'll be
ignored but who knows? You may be granted special privileges, access
to areas normally off-limits to the public (filming) and first dibs on
any freebies that might be available!
Tell them you represent a fan club, or Scrolls or Ape Chronicles... It
worked a treat for us at the NEC so it's well worth a try.

aqui no Brasil. O game para PC foi otímo e o pior, não teve propaganda, apareceu
na prateleira e pronto.
Agradeço ao grupo do yahoo e ao Hunter entre outros o material que eles tem
Aguardo ancioso o lançamento de seu novo trabalho.

As of this moment it looks like I won't be attending until the 8 PM Monday
night showing on March 31. I just can't get up to NYC before
that, and Joe Russo is working that weekend. I'll be going with Joe Russo,
but who else will be there I know not! Anyone who lives in or close to the
city, and can make it on a Monday night, is invited to join us. I'm
hoping the showing will be well-attended but I'll bet most will go see it on the
weekend. I also hope that the projectionists at the Ziegfeld will treat

.htmlThat's exactly right, Tim. At least as of my conversation with Mr.
Satterfield, vet at MD Anderson, she was a part of the "clean" population.
This is all pretty sketchy, and I am relying on the impression that
she was older than six months at time of import. (That is probable,
so I allowed the error.) It will probably never be certain that she
is the right girl, unless by hearing about this someone were to come
forward and say, "That's NOT her. I know where she/he is."
Thank you.

Helen,
While I commend you for conducting a most diligent search, I must admit that the hairs
on the back of my head stood up when I read the latter part of your post. Reason: Would I
be correct in inferring that the use for which the chimpanzees are bred in the Anderson
Cancer Center is as experimental subjects for testing cancer vaccine/cure research?
If so, then you might recognize the awful irony if you recall some of the passages from
the scientifically-induced neurological seance of sorts conducted on the non-speaking
humans near the end of Pierre Boulle's original "Planet of the Apes" book wherein one of
the individuals recalling the voice of one of his distant human ancestors, a cancer
researcher on the verge of a cure for cancer, tells from his first-person perspective about
his growing more nervous with the apes, his experiemental subjects, in his research
center.
Reason: The cancer researcher's picked up on several of the caged laboratory apes
seemingly engaging in what sounded faintly to his ears almost like human conversation.
Indeed, the researcher to his utter shock occassionally catches sight of one particular
chimp "ape-ing" the nervous ticks of the research center director. And then one day, as
he's about to inject the super-intelligent chimpanzee with his anti-cancer serum, that
worthy overcomes him by surprise (almost like Taylor did to the gorilla Julius in POTA),
frees his fellows and then, as the other apes restrain the researcher, the super-intelligent
chimp injects the human researcher with his own experimental cancer-cure serum and
pats him on the head in the same affectionate way that the researcher had done to his
experimental ape subjects.
And then, locked in one of his laboratory cages, the human researcher states that he
accepts his fate that he'll more likely die from the lethal injection of the would-be cancer
cure and thus be spared a torturous existence at the hands of the apes at the birth of the
Planet of the Apes on the distant world envisioned in Boulle's original book.
Having had relatives, friends and acquaintances who've both survived and succumbed to
cancer, I am not naive about the need for cancer research. Nevertheless, I can't helped be
stunned by the the litarary irony of the news that the chimp who played Baby Milo in
"Escape from the Planet of the Apes" (whose character grows up to become Caesar in
CONQUEST and BATTLE) has wound up living in a real-life cancer research laboratory
presumably acting as a surrogate nurse mother ("aunt") to younger chimps (who've
evidentally been taken from their own birth mothers) that are evidently being raised to be
future cancer-research experimental subjects.
If Kelley herself is of or near retirement age, I would encourage POTA fans to consider
campaigning for Kelley to be moved to a humane simian retirement community like Chimp
Haven where many chimpanzees who've been used in medical research are sent for
retirement, rest, peace and quiet. See: http://www.chimphaven.com <.html

Hmmm... I wonder. The drama of your parallels is not lost on me. The
irony is, indeed, stimulating.
I have been overwhelmed by emotion over the years, both by the
prospect of finding Milo, and by the knowledge that finding him/her
would stir kettles of emotional soup. I do admit to a tentative
feeling of relief and a warm fuzzy that she is in the "clean"
population. I understand that apes are "breedable" right up to the
end. I don't know if that will be the case with Kelley.
Even if she were not the true Baby Milo, I would feel an incredible
sense of accomplishment if it were possible to have her released to
spend the remainder of her time in a safe haven with other
chimpanzees. Although laws now forbid the capture of wild apes for
pets, research, entertainment, etc., our Kelley (regardless of her
movie status) was born wild. I would love to see her released, even
if her identity were never truly proven.
A representative of Chimp Haven has been on my contact list. It isn't
easy to get a chimpanzee moved to that facility. And the cost to
acquire Kelley and have her removed from the Cancer facility would be
WAY beyond MY means. On the other hand, if she is still clean, it
might be technically "possible." Which could mean she would still
have a chance.
I have often wondered, if she were allowed to view herself on film,
would she remember? Would she respond? Either to images of herself
or of the people who were her caregivers. <.html

Since she seems to only be acting as something of an extended-family aunt for some
apes being reared there, she doesn't sound like she's still in her breeding years.

Wait a minute -- If apes can no longer be legally used for scientific vaccine/serum
research, exactly how is that cancer research center using the chimps?

There *is* a way to get Chimp Haven interested in Kelley: Contact them, mention in
passing that she's probably *THE* Milo from the classic "Escape from the Planet of the
Apes" and that you felt that they might potentially be interested in having a genuine
celebrity at Chimp Haven since you'd also heard that Shreveport has in recent years
become something of a regional movie-making hub since Hurricane Katrina devestated
New Orleans and South Louisiana.

Well, be prepared for a pleasant shock and pick up the latest National Geographic
magazine for its cover story on animal and primate intelligence and you'll find many, if not
most, of your answers.
Only, don't be shocked if you find it also to be insightfully disturbing reading, too. You
may not like what you find out indeed when you consider how such animals are treated in
zoos, circuses, menageries, research experiments, etc. <.html

Sorry, that may not be clear. Capturing chimps in the wild is
forbidden. Kelley was wild caught in the days when it was still ok to
do that. The use of chimps for research is still common, and to some
ways of thinking, "necessary." <.html

I see where you are going with that, and all of that is good, but I
would be hesitant to suggest they use her "celebrity" for more than a
comment that, indeed, she is safe. I guess I wouldn't be much of a
fundraiser for these sanctuaries, since I would prefer they remain
sanctuaries. (Not that someone with better ideas -- such as perhaps
yours -- wouldn't be useful in devising a plan for her safe removal.)

Well, I'm not sure how big the screens where that I saw it on in the
past. I first saw it was in a neighborhood theatre in Wantagh on Long
Island that only held around 500 seats, maybe less. The second time was in
Levittown, also in a small theatre. Both of those were in 1968 and
both theatres are gone now. The third time was in a big theatre, in
Lynbrook. In fact, that theatre was so big that it's now six
theatres! (It got criminally divided up.) The fourth and fifth times
was at the Calderone in Hempstead. That theatre is still standing, but
hasn't shown films in over twenty-five or thirty years. Anyway, that was
1969 -- think how long ago that was. The sixth and seventh times I saw
PLANET in a theatre were also a fairly large one, in upstate New York, but not a
huge theatre. That was the PLANET/BENEATH double feature in 1971.
But the last time I saw PLANET in a theatre was during the "Go Ape" reissue in
1974, and that was in a small "shoe box" six-screen multiplex theatre (now
also gone) in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and the print of PLANET was in rough
shape. That really sucked being the last time seeing PLANET
theatrically. Now -- thirty-four years later -- this showing of
PLANET at the Ziegfeld (with a screen that, I think, is 27.5' x 55') in NYC
will put it right. I don't expect I'll ever see PLANET theatrically again
-- ever. This is it, the last hurrah. I hope the print, even if new,
is a decent one.

Chimp Haven of Sheveport, Louisiana isn't just a sanctuary for retired laboratory/
research chimps but also, if I'm not mistaken, a number of them are artists in their own
right. (Yes, *artists* as in painting.)
Now, the late Roddy McDowall was not only a renowned character actor but also an
accomplished photographer in his own right. Thanks in part to McDowall's renown for his
avocation, today, perhaps it's not unusual to find many more multi-faceted actors with
avocations as accomplished and aspiring artists, authors, scultptors and photographers in
their own right.
In my opinion, given her apparent celebrity pedigree, Kelley might also prove to be
something of a chimp artist in her own right. (Mind you, I *am* writing with tongue
planted part-way in cheek here, but what you don't know about Chimp Haven is that the
artwork produced by their chimpanzees has been sold for fundraising. A celebrity artist
among the chimps would be a fundraising asset indeed, especially a simian actor turned
artist.)
Regardless of whether she can paint or not, I'm fairly sure that Kelley would be an asset
to Chimp Haven. So, if you're looking for a better place for Kelley, please be sure to read
up about it Chimp Haven at: http://www.chimphaven.com and if it measures up to your
expectations as a candidate sanctuary, feel free to email me if you need any other local
assistance in the matter. <.html

.htmlA few years ago, I read the novel "Sims" by F. Paul Wilson which turned out to be an
unexpected great compelling near-future science fiction novel whose storyline was
original enough not to come across as cribbing from "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes"
and yet, it felt almost like an alternate POTA timeline that might well have averted the
Planet of the Apes altogether in one sense and yet realized it in another a la an
undeveloped and abandoned plot point from an early draft of "Beneath the Planet of the
Apes."
I highly recommend POTA fans check this book out as it's quite good. What's really
intriguing about it is that its storyline is also a nicely camouflaged retelling of an ancient
Sumerian story.

LOL! I wasn't talking about a TV show. Chimp Haven is a legitimate retirement center for
laboratory/research chimpanzees a few miles southwest of Shreveport, Louisiana (where
I'm writing from -- the city, not the chimp facility. [|:=8) Check out: http://
www.chimphaven.com
Now, I *do* recall seeing mention of a TV show called "XTreme Primates" or something
like that from a few days ago.
By the way, the first time I saw Kelley was in a black-and-white Associated Press news
photograph from 1971 which showed POTA make-up artist John Chambers touching up
the baby chimp's POTA nose while both Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter in partial
Cornelius & Zira attire and ape make-up were looking on as Chambers put on the final
touches. If memory serves, Roddy was also wearing glasses over his ape make-up.
That photograph in the Alexandria Daily Town Talk newspaper was the only thing that
tipped me off that there was going to be a third POTA film coming out later that year. <.html

.htmlI saw Planet of the Apes on the big screen at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, California sometime in the 1990s. It is a landmark art deco theater, and the big screen showing was totally the highlight of the year for me. (Yes, I need to get a life).
I am hoping they will show the movie again for the 40th anniversary. Maybe another revival house in San Francisco???? I've tried calling the theatre but it's voicemail hell, so I gave up and got on their e-mail list. I would love to see it again on the big screen.

Planet has been shown as part of the Bryant Park summer film festival. But that is outside and usually a one night only affair on a Monday.
The Ziegfeld has always been a venue for major revivals. I've seen Fantasia, Sparticus and Lawrence of Arabia there as well as more current films like Casino Royale, the Star Wars prequels and the Burton remake.

It's only saying that it's "in the works for a possible release by the end
of 2008," but I would say that now's the time to send letters to Fox Home
Video that you want this to be a 40th Anniversary edition with new extras.
I'm hoping that what I'll see in New York reflects a major restoration and
something sourced from what will be used for the Blu-ray transfer. I know
practically every flaw in the current 35th Anniversary edition transfer and I'll
be on the look-out for them in this "new print" at the Ziegfeld. If
they're not there, I'll know Fox has been doing it's job.

Crap! (Oh, sorry James) I'm actually
traveling with Bill Blake to New Jersey and it's possible we could detour to NY.
But there's some last minute stuff that might delay us so it looks like it's
out. But if things go well possibly we could make it for the last day (April
3rd). But very doubtful. Jeff

To
anyone going,
We've found, with Simian Scrolls, that if you contact
the organizers BEFORE hand, tell them who you are and what you want, they
are generally quite helpful on the day. My advice is for Tim, James,
Rory and whoever else may be attending to get yourselves organized
and contact the theatre. The worst that can happen is that you'll
be ignored but who knows? You may be granted special privileges,
access to areas normally off-limits to the public (filming) and first
dibs on any freebies that might be available!
Tell them you
represent a fan club, or Scrolls or Ape Chronicles.. . It worked a
treat for us at the NEC so it's well worth a try.
You lucky sods :0)

As of this moment it looks like I won't be attending until the 8 PM
Monday night showing on March 31. I just can't get up to
NYC before that, and Joe Russo is working that weekend. I'll be
going with Joe Russo, but who else will be there I know not! Anyone who
lives in or close to the city, and can make it on a Monday night, is
invited to join us. I'm hoping the showing will be well-attended but
I'll bet most will go see it on the weekend. I also hope that the
projectionists at the Ziegfeld will treat that new print of PLANET with
TLC.

Most revival houses in New York died out in the
'80s thanks to home video. There are only a few left and they seem to
concentrate on more artsy type films.
Planet has been shown as part of the Bryant Park
summer film festival. But that is outside and usually a one night only affair
on a Monday.
The Ziegfeld has always been a venue for major
revivals. I've seen Fantasia, Sparticus and Lawrence of Arabia there as well
as more current films like Casino Royale, the Star Wars prequels and the
Burton remake.

.htmlHello all POTA fans:
Rory told me how great you all are!
I introduce the Saturday night Classics screenings at the Ziegfeld including March 29's of POTA's brand new print which will be premiering at the Ziegfeld. The screening is at 8PM. You can check clearviewcinemas.com for other screening dates and times.
I would love to have your input to include in my intro which only is allowed to run a few minutes and then on with the show.
So:
(1) Please, in one or two sentences, tell me why, in personal terms, POTA is such an important and meaningful film to you.
(2) Do not post here-instead e-mail me directly at gdj1231@... using the heading "POTA ZIEGFELD"
(3) I will do my best to distill and synthesize as much as I can from you. I think this will make for a much more meaningful intro to all.
If you have never been to the Ziegfeld, NYC's premiere movie palace, you are in for quite a treat, and I welcome you and hope to meet many of you Saturday night.
Thank you,
Ziegfeldman

There have been a lot of "original" costume pieces
lately on e-bay. Most of these items not only aren't the right style,
they're usually too "new" to have been from the 60's-70's
I wouldn't trust them

.htmlThose boots don't look like any I've seen in any of the movies or
countless production photos I've seen. They may be from a sci-fi
movie of the time, but I doubt seriously they are from an APES
movie. I would have to see some type of documentation, or a photo
from the movie showing someone wearing those boots.

Caro Adami,

aqui no Brasil. O game para PC foi otímo e o pior, não teve propaganda, apareceu
na prateleira e pronto.

2008/3/18, Colin Snow <colindsnow@...>: Hey all, I know I don't post much (or at least as much as Bill does but I was wondering:
1. Did you guys like the Planet that BrokenSea did?
and 2. Did you like the performances that me and the other actors did? (I was Various Gorillas and Commander Brent)
Just was wondering your opinion.
Dunno if Bill wants this out, but more Planet will be coming (from beneath).
