.html Both the LA Weekly and LA Times had in depth articles this week about
it being the 40th anniversary of Bonnie & Clyde (albiet released
in '67, go figure.) They were in depth articles, not just blurbs
promoting a 40th anniversary DVD release, but why has there been little
to no press for POTA?
Having said that, though, you've got to love a film that launched the
careers of two great Genes-
Wilder, and my all time favorite actor, Hackman. <.html

Wanted Extras
1. The original cut of Conquest

Dudes (and Dudettes), I think what Fox is starting to get ready for Blu-ray
is a new release of the "original" PLANET OF THE APES, meaning the first film --
not the whole damn series, TV show, etc., etc.!!!!.
All I'd ask for in the way of new extras is a decent commentary track, plus
a commentary track on just the score (isolated this time), an extensive
collection of stills, and -- if they can possibly find them -- outtakes we
haven't seen already. Other than that, I guess the usual little
featurettes that Fox loves to throw in. Maybe a Rick Baker tribute
to John Chambers -- that kind of thing. A remembrance of Arthur P.
Jacobs would be nice too.

.html No apology necessary Gelson, and I understand that there are people that, in most cases, can understand English, but cannot speak it. In the mopst extreme cases there are people that, obviously, refuse to speak English.
I know you all were not speaking in your native tongue to be mean or anything, but it is kindda hard to follow a conversation with a language barrier in the way. It can be likened to English being like Windows and other languages being like Linux, better and alot of packages ;)
So please take no offense by me or mc, perhaps when posting....maybe include a translated version of the message? *shrugs* just a thought.... take what you want from this message, but I really meant no disrespect to anyone by this or the previous.

I think it's pretty cool to see other languages spoken on the message
board. It reminds me POTA is a worldwide phenomenon and not just an
American one. Go ahead and speak Portuguese if it makes it easier for
you, Gelson - just remember we can't all join in.
BTW, I thought POTA was huge in Japan... how come there's no Japanese
members?

.htmlHello there-
My husband and I have a gallery in Atlanta, and are putting together an artshow to celebrate the 40th anniversary of POTA. The show opens April 12th, featuring over 40 local and national artists. For those of you in the Atlanta area, there will be an opening night party on the 12th from 7pm- midnight. Artwork that hasn't sold after the opening night, will be available for purchase online, and the show runs through May 3rd.

Hope that some of you can make it out. Also, if anyone knows anyone in the Altanta area that does POTA costuming, we would love someone to come in costume to the opening. I know this is a long shot, but I thought this would be a good place to put it out there...

Hey, maybe I'm wrong about what Fox
will include on Blu-ray DVD releases! Look at what they'll be doing with
BATMAN: THE MOVIE. Of course, there is a new BATMAN movie coming out soon,
but hopefully they'll put some extra effort into APES... (Write to

Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to capitalize on this summer's
release of the forthcoming Batman feature film, The Dark Knight. Fox will
release a new special edition DVD of the 1966 Batman feature film that
starred Adam West and Burt Ward, as well as an all-star cast of villains. A
previous special DVD edition has been on the market for years, but the new
release will have an abundance of exclusive extras. It's clear the studios are
trying to provide incentives for consumers to adapt to the Blu-ray system by
releasing editions such as this exclusively in that format. Additionally, there
will be a limited edition release of this title that includes a Batmobile
replica. No box art has been finalized, but here is the official press release
that Cinema Retro just received from Fox:

My first reaction to this is that "perfect" is subjective and is decided
against certain standards that can vary. Anyway, you probably wouldn't be
bring this up if it wasn't PLANET, but I wouldn't say that myself. The
score to PLANET is one of the very best, but perfect? I don't know
about that. Is there anything perfect in the entire universe?

Do you already have this DVD? If so, all I can tell you now, because
I don't want to look at the DVD when I'm going to go see it theatrically in a
few days, is go frame-by-frame on the sequence where the astronauts hear the
waterfall in the distance, and then do the same thing during the scene at the
outdoor cage when Zira first tells Cornelius about Nova remembering the blood
transfusion. Otherwise, check out the main title sequence and notice the
hair at the top of the screen (it doesn't last very long).

It's still a CD easily bought on Amazon.com, etc. I think in
honor of the film and Jerry Goldsmith, you should simply buy one if you haven't
already.

I didn't realize that Joe and Larry were a part of this group. Anyhoo, I was just thinking that coming upon their book unexpectedly in my haunts to the public library last October/November helped to jumpstart my passion for the apes movies. There was nobody to share my passion with throughout all these years. It was still there, yes, but hidden...
However, reading their book I think really ignited this burning flame that was once just an ember. I want to thank you for putting together that book. It was such a fun book to read. Someday I hope we may be able to meet in person so I can thank you personally.

Well, I wasn't expecting something that looked like it was shot
yesterday. Film stock from that era has a look to it that's best
described as "dated." I remember I went to the 20th Anniversary of
"Star Wars," which was digitally enhanced, and I was surprised by how
old the movie looked.
The thing about DVDs and video is they actually make old movies look
better.

I took the wife & kids to the 2pm show. We all loved it. Its always a
treat to watch a film at the Ziegfeld - I saw Blade Runner there this past
summer , but I enjoyed POTA even more!
My wife, who is not really an apes fan - but was familiar with the films -
was impressed with the score. Its amazing what the theater experience will do
for a film that have only seen on the tube for years

We watched the 5pm in the back. For the 8pm we sat closer to the screen... You could see the sewat beating off Heston.... Seeing the movie on the big screen was freat. I noticed things I have not seen before.... Anyways I reccomend to everyone to see it in the theather if you can... I was looking around at the crowds reaction alot during the 8pm show. There where young kids there with their parents... If I can I would like to see it during the week if I have time... One last thing. I found it amazing that GAry had not sceen the movie in 40 years since its original screening..
He did a great job talking up the movie. He was very knew a lot about POTA and other HWLD

How I envy you all! I've never in my life managed to catch "Planet of the Apes" in a
cinema.
The last and only other time when I *might* have been able to see it on the big screen
was in 1982 when I learned a few weeks after the fact that "Planet of the Apes" had been
on the films shown late Saturday mornings as part of a Monroe, Louisiana summer kids
Saturday-cinema series.
Sadly, "Planet of the Apes" is the only Apes film I haven't seen on the big screen yet.
*However,* with the grand opening of the new local film center just a few weeks away,
I'm a bit more inspired than ever to campaign for an entire "Go Ape" POTA marathon.

Greetings from Ziegfeldman:
Thank you to all members for your warmth and friendliness. Yes, I really
hadn't seen the movie in 40 years, but prepared by watching it several times
this week. Seeing POTA on the Ziegfeld screen with such an enthusiastic group is
really why I do what I do there whenever they show Classics.
For those who couldn't make it, here's my introduction--Thanks again to
all, especially for my own rediscovery of such a fabulous film.
Best,
Gary
Good Evening, and welcome to a very special Anniversary screening in our
Classics Series at The Ziegfeld. Many of you have traveled far to be here
tonight, possibly even light years, and I especially want to thank you and those
who took the time to e-mail me this week with your thoughts on this very special
film.
1. Now, there are good movies and there are great movies.
2. Good movies are entertaining and have something to say, but great
movies additionally SAY SOMETHING WHICH IS TIMELESS. Such films are
classics.
3. Not having seen " Planet of the Apes" in forty years, I remembered it
as a good movie, but not a classic, so I figured that with reverence to this
film's worldwide admirers, I better take another look.
4. I started with Charlton Heston who, in his autobiography said "The
film has a philosophical point to make.
Taylor is a cynical misanthrope, so
disenchanted with his fellow man that perhaps, unconsciously, he's exiled
himself from Earth, launched through time to an unknown future. The crash of his
spaceship strands him in a civilization where he finds himself the sole defender
of Homo sapiens as a species."
5. Interesting premise, I thought, with a nice twist-kind of part
"Twilight Zone" and part H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine." Now the question-GOOD or
GREAT?
6. So, I watched the movie, again, and again
and I read my e-mails, GRADUALLY OPENING MY "Bright Eyes" AND FINDING Questions
with NO EASY ANSWERS.
Questions
about:
RACIAL STEREOTYPING
RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM
TOLERANCE AND IGNORANCE
SOCIAL CASTES
THE USES OF SCIENCE AND ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION
CREATIONISM VS. EVOLUTION
THE USES OF TORTURE AND HUMILIATION AND FINALLY,
QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE VERY NATURE OF HUMANITY ITSELF
ANY OF THESE ISSUES
SOUNDING A LITTLE FAMILIAR?
I HAVE A FEELING THAT LIGHT YEARS FROM NOW, SOME FUTURE CIVILIZATION WILL
BE ENJOYING THE FILM, ASKING THE SAME QUESTIONS , AND STILL FEELING THE ANGUISH AT
TAYLOR 'S FINAL
WORDS AND REVELATION. "PLANET OF THE APES" IS A CLASSIC!
FINALLY, LET'S REMEMBER THIS
IS A GREAT ADVENTURE AND A LOT OF
FUN.
.THANKS FOR COMING AND WHEN YOU LEAVE TONIGHT SAY A SPECIAL PRAYER FOR
CHARLTON HESTON AND FOR HUMANITY

.htmlIt was a thrill and treat to be at the NY City Ziegfeld Theater last night to see the original POTA on the BIG screen with Killer surround sound. It is a shame the POTA remake from Tim Burton did not re-kindle the franchise. Why doesn't the Sci-Fi channel turn the POTA franchise into a weekly TV series or four, 2 hour movies per season? I guess they prefer to be a joke to the public by making the cheap CGI monster movies of the week that remind one of the silly pre-1958 Sci-fi movies. Mark GDJ1231@... wrote:

let's make the next one in the style of the '68 film". Even if you're not just talking about a film franchise and you meant the APES name as a whole, more than likely it too would have been done in a Burtonesque style. I can't see it being otherwise, not for the "mainstream" sstuff anyway. ***

Hi Jessica! It's nice to have a chance to meet you. We had a hard
time deciding whether or not to wear the costumes, mostly because of
the food. We were going to go from plate to plate and pinch things
from the others, but we didn't think that would be sanitary. (They
are humans, after all.)
We ate French fries and drank from straws. Then we watched each other
to see that there weren't grease marks and spills on the faces.
One day I would LOVE to have real appliances with glue and latex and
the whole deal. But I was just glad for the chance to dress up as
Apes once again and go out on the town.
It's a riot! I hope you get the chance.

Greetings, everyone. It has been pointed out to me that the link I posted to download the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack is apparently an "illegal download". I honestly did not realize this, or I wouldn't have posted the link. I would never intentionally ask anyone to do anything wrong, and I am sincerely asking your forgiveness for pointing you in the "wrong direction". I thought I had found something good, but as it has been pointed out to me, if it is "too good to be true", it's obviously not good. Please forgive my ignorance, and I promise to
better research anything I find in the future. Thank you for understanding, and I hope I can earn your forgiveness.

I was going to mention the same thing Dave. The 8PM crowd was
definitely little more enthusiastic than the 5PM one. Both "Get your
stinking paws off me..." and "It's a madhouse!!" drew rounds of applause,
as did the 20th Century Fox logo at the beginning. And it really is cool how you
see so much more of the set design and art direction on the big screen. Like we
both mentioned last night, I never realized that there was a water fountain in
the infirmary, or drainage paths set in the floor.

major thing I saw yesterday was the glyphs on

also it looked like there was a Dr. Galen double in
the background of a later cell scene that was wearing
a pull over mask....
Roddy's performance REALLY comes across on the screen
as well....the audience loved what he was

his face when Taylor is describing his trek through
the forbidden zone....! and Julius's perfomance
too.....

.htmlIt's funny that you are all referring to our first spot in the theater
as "the back." We sort of thought it was pretty close to the front.
It was great that you were all willing to move back a bit for the
first movie, and cool too that we saw it from different perspectives
for the second showing.
From the upper "balconyish" area, we kept elbowing each other and
saying "Look at that. Did you know that was there?"
There is a bunch of humans that we hadn't seen before on the left hand
side of the screen. There are some artifacts in the museum that were
interesting. The "claw" was still unidentifiable in my opinion, but we
did get a great view of it. There is a lawgiver statue in Zaius's
office that I didn't know wss there, but there is also a chimp figure.
WHAT IS THAT DOING THERE?
I agree with Tim. I definitely felt the performances better on the
big screen. I would include Lucius in this, too. I really felt his
youth and his lines didn't seem as canned. (Corn, maybe yes, but
fresh, not canned.) ;)
Never having been to an actual full-screen movie (since the theaters
around here are all hacked into at least two screens), Amanda LOVED
sitting WAY BACK raised above the heads of all the other viewers to
see the whole picture! I have to admit, my old eyes worked better
from this perspective.
Although I know to some of you this this part is AWFUL -- I just want
to say I REALLY enjoyed the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil
piece. It was the first time that Amanda had noticed it before.
In general, seeing the movie twice in one sitting was cool, and
watching in a wide open theater on the big screen really sucked me in.
Too long. Gotta go.

.htmlOh yeah...
I have to add that having worn a mask for quite a space of time before
and during the movie, I was very focussed on the faces of the actors.
It was fun to watch their faces move (or not), express emotion (or
not), and all that face related stuff. Some actors were very good at
it. Some actually weren't.
And costumes? Many, many were glyphless. Chimps more than orangs.
And... we noticed that Zira had many different colored outfits. I
don't believe it was just the lighting. maybe someone here is
familiar with wardrobe, but I always believed she had one. It seems
that she had at least three (or one that was washed and faded more
than once).
Oh, and Taylor was wearing what appeared to be boxers in the first
scene and briefs in the next. Did he have a change of shorts in his
pack? Just curious.

.html Rory,
Although I see no way that they could have edited out flaws from the
movie, since there were none, I do want to say that I have followed
your posts about flaws in the past and think that you will find some
of them still remain in the picture.
I can't know for sure, because I don't have freeze frame, and
certainly didn't have it here, but the glowing blip that was supposed
to be a helicopter (plane, maybe) is still there. I tried to see a
blip of the shoe, but couldn't catch it any better here than I ever
did in the home video. But a few of the little thingies (floaters)
that I see at home (especially in the beginning) were still in the
Ziegfeld version.
Anyway, you might see differently, but it seems stuff that I knew
about is pretty much the same as it was.

.htmlOh, I know all the flaws. I just wonder if they're in the original
negative or some master dupe that Fox still uses.
Anyway, I should be watching PLANET at the Ziegfeld in about 24 hours.
It's supposed to rain in NYC when I'm there. I hope it's not too cold,
but that's probably how it was 40 years ago!
I won't be dressed as an ape, but I will be wearing a t-shirt with the
classic Fox logo on it.
I wish I could have been there Saturday when you and your daughter were
there, Helen. But, I still have going there to look forward to.

By the time of the TV series, the way he had Galen's face moving almost non-stop, you could think he was having
facial spasms. I mean moving of the whole forehead was just overkill. ***

Helen and Amanda - you are awesome ! I was in NYC last weekend - saw
James Naughton do cabaret show at NJ Performing Arts Center - and it
cost enough just to stay over for one night. If it had been last
weekend I probably would have gone to the theatre to be with you all.
I saw Planet of the Apes on the big screen - and I would love to see
it again 40 years later. I think its wonderful when group members can
get together, especially for Apes.

.htmlI thought Roddy's facial movements were great except for one scene.
When he is reading Taylor's note and he says "Fort Wayne, Indiana",
the movements don't match what he says, and looks really fake. I
think he really mastered it as the series moved along, though.

He was at his best in the original, but by the last film and the TV
series there was no Frank Schaffner around to tell him to tone it down.

*** As far as the bit with "Fort Wayne, Indiana", I agree with you there. But that's really not a case of his face moving around too much. It's more like the lack of lip motion throwing it off.
But, as far as him mastering it as the series went along, I totally disagree with you there. It got too be way out of hand by the TV series. Rory is right in that McDowall was pretty good with it in PLANET, but as the series went on, it became too much.
If being the only ape that had facial epilepsy was wrong, Roddy didn't wanna be right.
