.htmlHelen, to be in a real costume is such a dream of mine. Gotta save up the dough...but someday I will do it!! I will probably sew my own costume and by that time I will be an expert in sewing...
It's great to have a partner, too...so you could look out for each other regarding grease marks etc...
I had to giggle when I read about you avoiding sharing food with the humans.
Even though I was not able to be there, I was in spirit!!!
You gals rocked...
Jessica.

One day I would LOVE to have real appliances with glue and latex and the whole deal. But I was just glad for the chance to dress up as Apes once again and go out on the town. It's a riot! I hope you get the chance.

I did it a couple times back in my college days -- and hated it! I
mean I liked having the makeup on. It was cool to watch myself in a
mirror make different expressions, but I hated going in public.
Everyone stares at you and points and asks you endless questions and
pokes your face.

I'm trying to get to the Star Trek convention in SF at the end of the year, and I'm going to be in Lieutenant Uhura regalia. (hope I still fit my costume).
I love to be in costume...you can be such a different person when you are in costume. I am usually one of the quiet ones until I get in costume.

This is what was printed in "Parade"
(3/30/08):
Q: Charlton Heston's family hasn't commented
on his condition since he revealed he has Alzheimer's. What can you tell
us?
A: Heston, 83, is in the final stages of the
disease and has 24-hour care at his homein Beverly Hills, which he built with
his pay from "Ben-Hur". His son and daughter visit regularly. "He's not plugged
into machines", a family friend tells us, "and his wife Lydia doesn't plan to
use any to extend his life".
It also has a picture of Heston and
Lydia from 2002. Jeff

nice to have a chance to meet you. We had a hard time deciding whether or
not to wear the costumes, mostly because of the food. We were going to go
from plate to plate and pinch things from the others, but we didn't think
that would be sanitary. (They are humans, after all.) We ate
French fries and drank from straws. Then we watched each other to see
that there weren't grease marks and spills on the faces. One day I
would LOVE to have real appliances with glue and latex and the whole
deal. But I was just glad for the chance to dress up as Apes once again
and go out on the town. It's a riot! I hope you get the chance.

.htmlThe face poking thing is the worst! A few years back when we did the
parade thing, an old teacher came up and ripped off my brother's face
-- tearing it, cracking it, and twisting it away from his face. It
takes forever to get it on right (even the mask) and to set it so that
the jaw moves and the cheeks and stuff. It works its way off, anyway,
but this woman destroyed his face. It was heartbreaking.
I'd love to just SEE a real costume. Billy's Basement was a great
reference for us when we made the costumes. I'd have loved to go
there and see his collection. One day, Jessica.
We had a lot of fun because we were with friends and the guys were
great! Even if the New Yorkers hadn't been so welcoming, we would
have felt like celebrities just in the group! Thanks, guys. You were
very sweet!
So, have a great time today, Rory!

I'm with you, Jessica. I'm basically VERY quiet. It is fun to walk
around knowing that no one sees past the mask.
I wouldn't feel comfortable in just any costume, though. There are
all sorts of good thoughts that go with wearing this stuff. My
daughter and I shared that, along with the new memories that come
along with it the next time.

The faces for the masks were a gift from Brian at Apemania. We were
doing a school project and when he heard about it he offered to send
some faces that he had that he couldn't use. Then he helped us by
sending directions and advice. It was a really great experience, and
we were really floundering until Brian came along. ("Thanks, Bri.")
The costumes were tricky, because we are pretty rural here. Brian
suggested plum colored duck fabric for the gorillas, which we were
able to find. But all we could find in a remotely Zira green was this
linen. I lined my costume to make it heavier. The parade was in
June, so most of our chimps didn't think that was a very good idea and
just went with the lightweight linen.

When I was 12--13, I would come home from school,
put on my POTA Gorilla or Zaius mask and run up and down the street for the next
6 hours. I learned to tolerate wearing a rubber mask until I learned how
to use foam latex. I can , and have worn a foam face for up to 2 days
now. Yeah people do want to touch and poke at you, but it's all part

from the original movie ("stinking paws"/"damn them all to hell",
etc.). If it had been named differently, and not tried to "connect"
with the original, I feel it would have been better accepted as a
film on it's own merit. By making so many comparisons to the
original, it made us expect much more from it. They were originally
going to do a true remake, with Governor Ahhnold as Taylor. I'm
still hoping someone will do a true remake someday. The "Hulk" movie
a few years ago was a big disappointment, and they have already
remade that one (this time starring Edward Norton), so maybe someone
will still remake PLANET while sticking to the original concept and
story.

.htmlThank you, John, I agree. The faces that were believable to me were
the ones that showed a bit of emotion. That involves some pretty
significant facial movement. Eyes, cheek, mouth movement. Some of
the Apes did move their mouths a bit, but didn't seem to have any life
under the mask. Some, without moving the mouth much, showed anger or
interest and it came through the mask.
Actually, there were a couple places where Roddy wasn't as
demonstrative, and I didn't think he did as well. The scene in his
(or was it Zira's) home, for example. I thought his voice was muffled
and his facial movements weren't as believable. I thought it sounded
like he was having a little trouble with his face.
I'm wondering if anyone knows if the orangutans had more trouble
working the faces than the other species. I wasn't as impressed with
their acting. Maybe the faces were harder to work with?

.htmlWhile I never agreed with Mr. Heston's conservative politics, nor Ronald Reagan's policies, either, I pray for his family and for him in this most trying time. Having just lost my Dad last year to a 5 year battle with cancer, I can empathize with the Heston family. Taking care of a loved owns health at home while their condition deteriorates over time, is a very difficult task for the family and the caregivers. Fortunately, movie fans shall always have Charlton Heston's many wonderful movies to watch over and over again from Ben Hur to 10 Commandants to POTA to Soylent Green as well as his very very funny hosting of a Saturday Night Live show in the mid 1990s when he proved he could do comedy and make fun of himself in a good natured way. mark

.htmlI wish I had seen that, Mark. It's cool to picture him poking fun at
himself. I love the guy partly because of his association with the
NRA. Somehow the bit on the beach about knowing how to use a gun
really resonated this time. In spite of the fact that the guy is
Moses, there is something very, well, human about him.
My dad was sick for a couple years with a brain tumor before he passed
(over 20 years ago). Very sad, but in retrospect it was a good time
for our family. I wish them all peace at this time and join you in
sending my prayers.

Was there a big reaction when Cornelius says they won't need weapons
- and Heston responds- "I'm glad to hear it. I want one anyway!" That
usually gets the biggest response in the screenings I've seen here,
obviously because of Chuck & the NRA.
That line and when Dodge and
Landon are nude, kneeling to see the human footprint, and Taylor is slow
to kneel with them. Those two bits got the biggest response, in 68 I doubt
the crowd reactions were the same....

That was pretty bad. When a sitcom wants to
get cheap laughs, they trot out POTA. It's not worth your time.

I don't know who acted him, but really bad facial movements from him shows up right after Heston's famous line, "Take your stinking paws off me..." in the 1968 movie. This chimp is in the lower left hand corner of the screen, and was among the chimps that were throwing rocks/food at Heston. He's got a really bad tick on his face...now THAT is bad facial ticking...

I only purchased 1/4 of a yard of the fabrics because it was only for my Mego Zira. This costume for the Sideshow is just the leftovers of that old project.

Please let me know what type of fabric they use on the chimp suits if you do ever go to Billy's basement. I am thinking they used some kind of lightweight wool, but I have never seen it in person. That's what surmise from what I have seen in photographs.

used for ours, anyway, and they looked OK.) I'll try to find some
pictures and post them for you.

I thought it was cool that the gorilla shirts had chest pockets with buttons for a total of 4 pockets in the front...and that it had a Mandarin collar, too. Let me know if you are unable to open the PDF and I may save it down to a jpeg.

.htmlJessica,
I have uploaded some pictures of the costumes we made, along with the
masks that we made with faces from Apemania. (Thanks, Bri.)
One day maybe I'll post the masks that we made BEFORE Brian came to
our rescue. Very interesting!
Nothing professional here, but remember that it was the kids who
actually did a good share of the stitching and design! Even the
little gorilla used the sewing machine to put together his costume.
(I adjusted the difficulty of the costume for the person who was
putting it together.) Rachel made the little chimp costume. Amanda
made DeeDee's orangutan, as she was originally going to play the part.
Enjoy.

Helen,
Thank you for sharing the photos. Little Tiffany is the most
precious thing! It's awesome that you had the kids make the
costumes. The orangutans look pretty spectacular! It must have been
difficult to make hieroglyphs. Was this for a parade? Did you guys
make it to the paper? Everything's WONDERFUL!! So cool to get the
children involved.

Look in Heston's bios, I forgot which one, he has something interesting to say about the filming of those butt shots.

.htmlJames got it, Jessica. He put it in files. Thanks to you both. I
visit the group on the web rather than receiving stuff through email.
That might effect my ability to see the photos. I'm not sure.
The costume is cool. You are right about the pockets. Who would've
known they were there? I do like the neck. The neck on Raymond's
costume was just turned in and hemmed. It was a pullover with an
opening in the back. Ashley's tunic buckled in the front. (We used
Billy's female gorilla costume as our guide, as his is the only one
known to exist.) I will search his site for a picture of that costume.
Anyway, one day I may be able to put together a more believable chimp
costume, but for the most part this worked ok. People knew who we
were supposed to be. Better than the masks worn on that clip that
James posted yesterday!!!
As far as the costume goes, I would like to be able to pull on Zira's
robe, grab my carpetbag, and go out for the evening... so it would
have to be "real" and usable. It's not that I would wear the face,
but I do like the jacket!

After numerous viewings of the Chimp and Gorilla
costumes at various Planet Hollywoods, in the past, It appeared to be pant
cloth/demin like or Duck cloth. Apemania wpuld be the best to ask.
I'm making my new costumes out of Pant weight denim from Yardage Town. The
have the perfect Plum, but the green is too light so I dyed mine.

Helen,
Please let me know what type of fabric they use on the chimp suits if you
do ever go to Billy's basement. I am thinking they used some kind of
lightweight wool, but I have never seen it in person. That's what
surmise from what I have seen in photographs.
Does anybody here know what type of fabric they used for the chimp
suits?
Jessica.

I only purchased 1/4 of a yard of the fabrics because it was only for
my Mego Zira. This costume for the Sideshow is just the leftovers of
that old project.
Your outfit came out very well I think! I am always on the
lookout for that perfect chimp green in preparation for the outfit I will
make myself someday.

idea.
I'd wear one like you just made for the doll! Did you buy
lots of extra fabric? ;)
