Jessica,
How did yoy do the glyphs?  In the past I cast some in Latex.  I just found out you can vacuum form vinyl cloth.  That's what I'm gonna try.

Helen,

Please let me know what type of fabric they use on the chimp suits if you do ever go to Billy's basement.  I am thinking they used some kind of lightweight wool, but I have never seen it in person.  That's what surmise from what I have seen in photographs.

Does anybody here know what type of fabric they used for the chimp suits?

Jessica.

Thanks for the well wishes.  I have not had the privilege of viewing an actual costume with my own eyes... I tried to contact somebody in SF that may still have the costumes, but he never replied to my e-mails.  Gosh--to be in the same room with an actual costume--that's another wish to yearn for!!
I only purchased 1/4 of a yard of the fabrics because it was only for my Mego Zira.  This costume for the Sideshow is just the leftovers of that old project.
Your outfit came out very well I think!  I am always on the lookout for that perfect chimp green in preparation for the outfit I will make myself someday.

Jessica.

Jessica,

Good luck on all of it! You are obviously good at it. I would want
to see a real Zira costume before building another one myself. And...
I would want to make it with the right materials. Have you been
privileged yet to see a production costume? One day I'm going to go
check out Billy's stuff. It would at least give me an idea.

I'd wear one like you just made for the doll! Did you buy lots of
extra fabric? ;)

That's a background suit.  They used storebought shirts for a lot of the extras.

Helen, I kept this PDF as a reference when they sold a background gorilla suit on ebay.  I thought it was cool that the gorilla shirts had chest pockets with buttons for a total of 4 pockets in the front...and that it had a Mandarin collar, too.  Let me know if you are unable to open the PDF and I may save it down to a jpeg.

Billy?

It think the gorilla and orangutan suits were duck. (That's what we
used for ours, anyway, and they looked OK.) I'll try to find some
pictures and post them for you.

Jeff, I have not done any human-sized costumes--only for 1/9 scale and 1/6 scale.  I have never heard of vacuum forming vinyl cloth.  Please show us your projects when you are done, and some photos also of vacuum forming.

When I do my costume, I am going to embroider the hieroglyphs and make them 3D with a bit of cotton batting.  I have a semi-chimp outfit that I wear in public, and it's not really screaming "PLANET OF THE APES" (because I purposely did not add the leather bib) so I wear it lots.  It's made out of fleece and the patches of brown on the sleeves is made out of the fleather.   It's cozy and I like to wear my black knee high boots with them.

Here's my chimp sweater that I am very brave to wear in public:

"Mr. Rory, I thought you were going to add your two cents. I've been
checking for it since Monday evening."

    Mr. Hasslein,

I was without Internet access while there and only just got back "home"
    tonight, Wednesday, April 2nd.

OK, here's my comments... First thing, I went on a rainy Monday night
to the 8PM showing. I went with Joe Russo and outside the theatre met
Larry Landsman. (These two guys co-wrote "POTA Revisted," in case
you're wondering.) James could have also been there, but I thought
that after having seen it twice already it was unlikely he'd go see it
again. I'd told him I'd give him a call while I was there, and I did,
but I waited until I was at the theatre. Found out from him then that
if I'd called him earlier he'd have come. Oh well! It was nice to
    talk to him anyway.

The audience for the show eventually numbered around fifty, give or
take, which really wasn't bad for a rainy Monday. They were a subdued
audience, but still laughed at this and that, and applauded when Taylor
    finally spoke again.

About the Ziegfeld.... it dates from 1969 and looks not to have been
remodeled since then, but it's been well maintained. It wasn't as big
as I thought it would be, and I thought it could use upgraded seating,
but other than that, you could sit in there and imagine you were seeing
the movie back in the late sixties, which is good.

About the print... James said it best first, it was "good but not
great." It was not a restored print as I'd hoped, but it was a new
print. However, it was probably printed from an interpositive copy
made in either the late eighties or early nineties. There was a lot of
dirt during the main titles, for example. The image was darker than
what you see on the DVDs, with blocked up shadows, and it was no where
near as sharp as what you can get on your monitor at home. I thought
the color was generally good throughout the entire film. That never
bothered me at all, but the overall "murky" quality of the print
disappointed me, however I thought there was actually more image around
all the edges than you can see on the DVDs and that was appreciated.
After the film, Russo and I agreed that although the print we just saw
was too dark, we now think the image on the 35th Anniversary DVD is too
bright. The interiors of the lab, Zaius' office at night, the night
escape, and the interior of the cave, all had greater atmosphere in the
print at the Ziegfeld than they do "opened up" on the DVD.

One thing that did not disappoint was the sound. It was stereo and
fully dynamic, with details that are either not there or hard to hear
on the DVDs. It was was only front speaker stereo from behind the
screen, but that's probably all it ever was.

Now, if I had known what the quality of the print was going to be would
I have still traveled to NYC at great expense? The truthful answer
is... NO! However, I'm glad I got to see it in a theatre again with an
audience, and that I can now say the last time I saw PLANET was in a
huge screen theatre in the middle of Manhattan, and not in a little
mutiplex shoebox in 1974 with a tattered print old print. And I also
enjoyed walking through Times Square again after not having been to NYC
in nearly thirty years. I love Manhattan and I wish I could have spent
more time there. I even love the subways!

So, I can't think of anything else to write at this time. It's after
    midnight now and I'm tired.

Does anyone else here remember the TV series "Lancelot Link, Secret
Chimp" from the mid-70's? That was the inspiration for "The Chimp
Channel" and the "Monkey'd Movies" shorts from a few years ago. Bernie
Kopell (Doc from "The Love Boat") did several of the voices, and he
always cracked me up. I was going through a box of old records of
mine, and came across the one and only album they did, called "Lancelot
Link & the Evolution Revolution". Man, that brings back some
memories. I'm going to burn it onto a CD so I can still enjoy it. I
just thought I would share that, in case it brings some happy memories
back for some of you, too. As APES fans, I thought you might have
enjoyed that show as much as I did. It was just plain, silly fun.
    Simian smiles to all!

I watched Charlton Heston in 'Khartoum' over the weekend and was
reminded just how good an actor that man is. He never seems to get
the credit for his talent---in Apes itself I think he's amazing and
would, nowadays, have been in with an Oscar shout. He could play big
men with human sensibilities and people sometimes forget that this is
a guy who marched with Martin Luther King when such stances weren't
necessarily popular in Hollywood.I hope his remaining time with his
family is as kind as it can be--us fans are lucky, we'll have him
    forever. John, Scrolls.

Taking care of a loved owns health at home while their condition

We used ultraleather (r) for the "leathers" and tried a variety of
different approaches. We just sewed the glyphs over some quilt
batting for some. An extra layer of leather, sewed on the first
layer, with a thick layer of batting between. Cutting the leather
really close to the stitching makes a nice glyph. For some of them,
we sewed leather on leather loosely and stuffed them to fill them out.
If I remember, the orangutan glyph was ironed on with double sided
pellon (careful, the ultraleather melts). Check out Franklin's
glyphs in the pictures. For a couple of the "sideways c" glyphs on
the chimps we sewed them after they had been stuffed.

You can check out our results. I could do close-up pics if that
helps. Ours were creative, as each kid chose their own design.

Yeah, she had lost her husband the year before and was recovering from a broken hip from a fall on the ice that winter.  Strange the press didn't know her.  But then again William Wendom didn't either, and they were in a movie together.  No scene together, and she was in makeup, but still!  When he asked who the big line was for and someone told him he was like, "Wow! The Real Deal huh?"  And yet someone still had to tell the press who she was at an Apes event?  Makes me wonder what kind of people are informing us!

    THAT'S DR!!! :)

Thank's for the in depth review (and correcting my typo)The good thing
about a new print, even if not restored, as I've stated before, the
30th anniversary print was nice, but the reel change made a mess of
the "I'm prepared to die - Doesn't that make you misty" exchange, which
is one of my favorite moments in the film. Hopefully the print will
make its way to Los Angeles.

May the Lawgiver forbid! Hopefully in L.A. they'll show the restored
print that Veetus saw at the 30th anniversary at the Motion Picture

      Jose,

I was able to see the chimp outfit from the picture that the
potagroups moderator uploaded to the site. You did an excellent job
on it! The glyphs came out really well. I'm trying to visualize how
you did that. I would love to see your gorilla and orang outfits!

We are all saddened by the news of Charlton Heston's death this evening. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. What follows is their statement on his passing:

Statement by the Family of Charlton Heston
Saturday April 5, 11:24 pm ET

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., April 5, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Legendary actor, civil rights leader and political activist Charlton Heston passed away today, at the age of 84. He died at his home with Lydia, his wife of 64 years, at his side. Mr. Heston was loved by his two children, Fraser Clarke Heston and Holly Heston Rochell, and his three grandchildren, Jack Alexander Heston, Ridley Rochell and Charlie Rochell.

The Heston family issued the following statement:

"To his loving friends, colleagues and fans, we appreciate your heartfelt prayers and support. Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life. He was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played. Indeed, he committed himself to every role with passion, and pursued every cause with unmatched enthusiasm and integrity.

We knew him as an adoring husband, a kind and devoted father, and a gentle grandfather, with an infectious sense of humor. He served these far greater roles with tremendous faith, courage and dignity. He loved deeply, and he was deeply loved.

'Planet of the Apes' and 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes' wouldn't
have been the same fantastic movies without Mr. Heston's
participation. Let's also remember the many, many other roles he
played throughout an outstanding 60+ year career:

Godspeed, Mr. Heston, and thank you very, very much.

          Yes, I sew everything.
My mother in law gave one sewing machine to my wife as a wedding gift (you know, old fashion spaniard mother, je, je) but my wife hate to sew, and I love it!. You need to see the face of my mother in law when he saw the utility of the machine.... There is a hard core of machism still in old people of Spain.
We have a small cinema festival in my town: the "Festival de cine Fantastico y de Terror de Estepona" and in 2001 I did an homage (or vindication) to the classic POTA with an exposition and people disguised (my son and friends)during the acts. It was awesome, a lot of people remember Zira or Urko (Are you Urko? they said), and nobody remeber Ari or Thade, and the premiere od POTA2001 was less than a month ago! Now, some of my outfits and masks are in the "Audiovisual Museum" in my tonw, in some manequin, but as said, the latex parts are in bad shape. If I do something in the future I will use silicone.
This two pics are screen grabs from a video, so forgive the bad quality, no digital camera then.

          Subject: Re: Charlton Heston RIP
          .html
Sometimes Life can script scenarios more ironic than one can possibly imagine even in a
          movie.

So I cannot imagine a greater irony in historical juxtoposition than to have read about
the passing of actor Charlton Heston just a day after the 40th Anniversary Memorial
Observance of the Assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, one of two 1968
assassinations (including that of Bobby Kennedy) which compelled actor Charlton Heston
-- then in his heyday in the wake of the release of the original "Planet of the Apes" -- to
become an even more pro-active advocate Heston. See: http://www.vpc.org/nrainfo/docs.htm

Yes, during his lifetime, Charlton Heston was not only an actor but also a political
advocate. Earlier in his life, he had marched in support of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his
Civil Rights movement. He even attended King's 1963 March on Washington and stood
near the podium as King delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech. For more about Heston's
life, films and political activism, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlton_Heston

And while Charlon Heston has left a fine film legacy, his vascillatingly inconsistent choice
of political advocacies give one pause as they can't readily be reconciled in in credible
terms. Regretfully, there's no satisfying closure to explain away those contradictions. For
example, when one reads the 1968 documents about his advocacy for sensible gun
control (see aforementioned link), it's difficult to reconcile them with his later
contradictory advocacy against reasonable gun control of any form when he was figurative
head of the NRA (National Rifle Assocation) during the 1990s.

While I would much prefer to remember and cherish his 1987 and 1993 appearances as
host of NBC's "Saturday Night Live", a period during which he wasn't challenging many
people's sensibilities, during the latter 1990s, I was stunned by the radical change in
Heston's demeanor, especially in his embracing and championing the NRA at its April 1999
convention practically at ground zero and in the immediate wake of the Columbine High
          School Tragedy.

So when I later saw Heston candidly telling documentarian Michael Moore in his 2002
"Bowling for Columbine" documentary (filmed in 2001) that he believed that increases in
gun crime were directly attributable to "race-mixing", I was even more stunned than ever
because I'd then-recently completed reading Eric Greene's "'Planet of the Apes' As
American Myth" and Heston's "race-mixing" statement regretfully felt much in sync with
the racist slang term "planet of the apes" which conveys the notion that the dumb,
speechless humans in the film "Planet of the Apes" were the result of race-mixing in the
sense of mongrelizing of the human species.

Some have tried to explain away Heston's "race-mixing" statement to Moore in "Bowling
for Columbine" as indicative of his declining physical/mental condition. Unfortunately, I'm
more skeptical of that because my having had a late grandparent whose Alzheimer's
Disease at times caused him to uncensor his tongue (almost like short-circuiting his better
judgment) and voice similar prejudices gives me reason to speculate that Heston may have
unwittingly voiced sentiment that he might very have harbored in his heart of hearts.

Two weeks ago, I almost posted a message of regret that the ultimate godawful irony of
all on the 40th Anniversary of the Release of the Original "Planet of the Apes" was that
actor Charlton Heston not only couldn't be there to receive his accolades but also that
Heston himself presumably with advanced Alzheimer's might not even remember that he
ever made the movie in the first place without seeing it again and identifying himself as
that younger version of himself. Considering that one of the real threats that his Colonel
Taylor character was facing in the film was his loss of identity, the irony is all the more
          poignant indeed.

I know I felt that my own grandfather had "died" in a sense when he lost his own
identity when a form of Alzheimer's Disease overtook him in late 1987. Even though he
passed away two-and-a-half years later, to this day, I still recognize that earlier date as
when he left us. The ultimate irony of all occurred 11 years later to the exact date of his
physical death when his wife, my maternal grandmother, passed away from Alzheimer's
          Disease herself.

So, as both a Planet of the Apes fan and Heston fan alike, I'll continue to hail his
cinematic successes and ponder the profound inconsistencies of some of his off-screen
          political activism.

On a satirically nostaligic note, though, I recently heard somebody on a movie-review
show condemning Charlton Heston's ultimate cinematic sin, and indeed, in his opinion,
the ultimate cinematic sin of all time: NOT Heston's blowing up the Earth at the end of
"Beneath the Planet of the Apes" BUT his diving into the flooded sewer system to try to
save actress Ava Gardner (his boozing wife) at the end of "Earthquake"!

To those who have not seen them, I would recommend checking out some of Heston's
roles in other unsung epics, like "The War Lord," "Will Penny," "The Big Country" and "El
          Cid."

All in all, I would much prefer to remember Charlton Heston as most of the time
reflecting the better self of his George Taylor character from "Planet of the Apes."

We are all saddened by the news of Charlton Heston's death this
evening. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. What follows is
          their statement on his passing:

Statement by the Family of Charlton Heston
Saturday April 5, 11:24 pm ET

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., April 5, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Legendary actor,
civil rights leader and political activist Charlton Heston passed away
today, at the age of 84. He died at his home with Lydia, his wife of 64
years, at his side. Mr. Heston was loved by his two children, Fraser
Clarke Heston and Holly Heston Rochell, and his three grandchildren,
Jack Alexander Heston, Ridley Rochell and Charlie Rochell.

The Heston family issued the following statement:

"To his loving friends, colleagues and fans, we appreciate your
heartfelt prayers and support. Charlton Heston was seen by the world as
larger than life. He was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders
and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played. Indeed,
he committed himself to every role with passion, and pursued every
cause with unmatched enthusiasm and integrity.

We knew him as an adoring husband, a kind and devoted father, and a
gentle grandfather, with an infectious sense of humor. He served these
far greater roles with tremendous faith, courage and dignity. He loved
deeply, and he was deeply loved.

I did, too, Rory. And yesterday afternoon I said something to the
woman at the checkout. She said, "I haven't seen it in the tabloids,
so I won't worry about it." **Shivers**

"Doesn't it make you misty." We'll miss you, Uncle Chuck.

          Jose!

I don't know what happened to the gorilla.jpg, but I'm getting this
notice: The requested file or directory is not found on the server.

In any case, those costumes, both for the dolls and for the "humans"

          awesome job!

Thank you, James. I'm not much of a TV watcher but on HNN, they had a
really nice story about Charlton Heston's life and passing. In this
story, they showed three different and somewhat lengthy scenes from
Planet of the Apes. Of course, they mentioned other stuff, too. I
don't see how anyone could NOT be saddened by the loss of this
          remarkably human human.

Well, Roddy died during the 30th anniversary year and Chuck died during the 40th. If they have to go I guess there's some closure in that. Yes, we'll miss him but we've been missing him for years.
Thanks to his family for their thoughtful message to his fans. And thank you Chuck for making POTA possible, and all the work that will live on after when we ourselves have shuffled off this mortal coil. God bless.

In fact, when Rory and I were in NYC to see the PLANET 40th showing,
I almost expected the irony to occur that very week.
I am indebted to him for being very ,very generous (and loyal) to our
project, PLANET OF THE APES REVISITED.The last time I spoke to him
was right around the time of the remake's production. He had just
finished his "death scene" and he was telling me about his experience
being in the make-up. Another irony...yesterday I just happened to re-
read the transcript of the first interview I did with him in December
of 1983. I hadn't looked at it for years and years previously.

I thank Mr.Heston for his talent, time and loyalty.

And yes, there is some good news... a great ( I hope) new APES project
is being planned for later this year. In fact, I am participating in
it TOMORROW. I will let Rory "spill the beans" very soon.

In the meantime, I will mourn the death of on of my favorite,
favorite people of all time...Mr.Charlton Heston.

My experiences with him were also positive. I met him a couple times and he was always friendly. No "I did that movie decades ago, leave me alone". I sent him a POTA Christmas card one year and he sent back a card and nice reply. For a guy who was supposedly "full of himself" he didn't seem that way in person. I'm sure other fans have stories of his kindness.
BUT I don't think he ever saw all the POTA movies. He said on camera during the '98 AMC 30th anniversary marathon that he was going to finally watch them all. But he told me in '99 that he only watched "Beneath".
Speaking of sci-fi, I found out this morning on aintitcool.com his real name was John Carter and he changed it to Charlton Heston as an actor because of Edgar Rice Burrough's "John Carter of Mars". Heston was a patron of science fiction, and POTA and "Soylent Green" were a direct result of his backing them.
