Well, Roddy died during the 30th anniversary year and Chuck died during the 40th. If they have to go I guess there's some closure in that. Yes, we'll miss him but we've been missing him for years.
Thanks to his family for their thoughtful message to his fans. And thank you Chuck for making POTA possible, and all the work that will live on after when we ourselves have shuffled off this mortal coil. God bless.

OK, this is the announcement Yahoo Group members....

But first I want to say to everyone, because I know with most of you
money is tight, to try and start saving at least $10 a week, every
week, starting now until the end of the year. Put it away in your Dr.
Zaius piggy bank and forget about it -- because you're going to need it.

You already know that PLANET OF THE APES is being prepared for Blu-ray
DVD... Well, there's more.

While I was visiting Joe Russo, he told me he'd just gotten an email
from a video production company that Fox hires to do their DVD extras.
It seems some executive at Fox, at the last minute, has decided that
the studio might as well put ALL the five original APES movies out on
Blu-ray at the same time, AND that the release date for this is
tentatively scheduled for October 2008!

What I'm going to say now is nothing I know for sure, here is what I've
heard: Mort Abrahams and Eric Greene are involved in some way, and
perhaps others (Joe Russo goes into Manhattan on Monday, April 7th to
sit down for a two-hour video interview). All five films with have new
"Making of" featurettes, AND that Fox is actively looking for any and
all deleted scenes and outtakes! Also, that the original ending, if
not the entire "preview" cut, of CONQUEST has been found (but again, I
don't know this for a FACT).

I will also assume that new commentary tracks and isolated scores, as
well as more extensive still galleries are being prepared.

But here's the real reason why it's important that I tell you this
news. This production company is just getting started right this week
on the extras for the sequels (I think PLANET is pretty much already
done). Fox has them on a ridiculously short schedule to get something
ready. NOW, NOW, NOW is the time -- MORE THAN EVER -- to send a flurry
of letters to Fox telling them EXACTLY what you want to see, otherwise
I think this may come out as just another rush job from Fox.

And none of you should put up with that now because not only are you
going to have to buy new DVDs, but they will be Blu-ray, higher priced
than the standard stuff -- and THEY WON'T PLAY ON YOUR STANDARD DVD
PLAYERS. You are going to have to buy Blu-ray DVD players!

This is why I told you to start saving your money, and if you still
have family that buys you stuff for Christmas -- tell them you're going
to want a Blu-ray DVD player. (Don't buy one now, though! The second
generation players will be out in the Fall and they'll be cheaper
(probably an average of $250.)

So, that's the news for now. I can't emphasize more my belief that
letters to Fox STILL should be written. Now that we may finally be
getting stuff we've wanted to see for years, we shouldn't let any kind
of sloppy rush job go down without a fight. If only in tribute to the
now late Charlton Heston, please try and send Fox even a hand-written
note! Please don't just do nothing.

Addresses, email addresses, phone and fax numbers will be forthcoming
from James. We're still trying to figure out who exactly to address
letters to at Fox. (Who's the executive closest to the project? Maybe
Joe Russo will find out tomorrow. I'll ask him to ask.)

Well, some actors just can't stand watching their own work. That goes for directors, etc. In the case of Heston though, he wasn't in the last 3 and would be coming to them fresh. I just think with all the attention they got, he might be curious. If I was him, and I had no interest in a movie series but my legacy was tied up in it, I'd have watched them in 40 years.

I found it really interesting that Arsenio Hall referred to him as
his "Go To Guy," if a guest cancelled at the last minute, he said he
could always call Charlton Heston & he'd be there. Speaking of which,
Heston made an appearance on the Conan O'Brian show that has to be the
funniest interview Conan has ever done, all done with great respect for
Heston, but Conan was at the top of his game. I really wish someone had
a copy of it and would submit it for Rareties 3. Maybe NBC will rerun
it this week.

Well, he was artistically against them and I doubt they were his cup of
tea. Besides, I think his legacy is the first film and the last three
films sorely miss his presence.

Alright, Gary. That was brave! (smiles)

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I believe you are right. The large
majority of the people in this world ARE nice people.

One of the movies that I used to watch with my kids often was
Pollyanna. And the TV show we watched? Mr. Rogers.

Peace.

I've got a Heston/Conan interview from a decade ago, if that's what you're referring to. Conan jokes about what it would be like if Heston ordered dinner at a restaurant, etc. I also have Heston's receiving the Kennedy Center Honor. That's a real moving one. They're all going to Rarities (though Hunter's very picky) when I get back from my trip.

I don't recall exaclty what year it was or how old I was, but I was stationed in this military school located on Governor's Island, right across the bay of Battery Park, at the tip of Manhatten, NYC. Being a member of the Armed Forces, I was gifted with free tickets to all the broadway, off-broadway shows, as well as all the tapeings of TV shows. ThanX to the USO. I particularly liked going nightly to the taping of the old Dick Cavett Show which was at the time opposite nightly of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

One night, HESTON appeared along with his co-satr Yvette Mimeux in a film they had just relaeased titled either "Hijacked"...or "Skyjacked". There had been some turmoil over the title in the press and it was changed but I do not recall now which it stayed with....one of the two. After the show, enough of us waited outside to meet the guests, get autographs, etc. I always wore my Coast Guard Uniform and stuck out in the crowd of course and he spotted me easily and just looked at me. I did not get HIS autograph, but I did get to meet and talk to Yvette.

Later that evening on two occassions, I ran into him again and he shunned me as well. I was still in my uniform. The third time was outside SARDI's Restaraunt. He gave three other fans autographs but ignored me, and just glared at me as though I were some spy or something, walked to his limo, sat in the back seat, and as they drove away, he contnued to turn and glare at me as though I was a stalker. It was a bit weird to run into him three times in one day in such a large city. He was wearing the Pilot's Uniform that he wore in the film.

Many years later, on Hollywood Boulevard, he was a guest speaker at the dedication of the "Star" being placed for Writer Carl SANDBURG. I stood in the crowd and watched. I had known of the celebration but had no idea that he would be there. I had been at the Kodak Theatre where I hung out at one of the cafes, reading and writing stories for my Yahoo Group and forgot about the event, then remembered and rushed to it just as it began. His name was spoken three times. First when the Mayor announced the names of all three speakers. Second when he was introduced to actually take his turn at the microphone and honor Carl. The third time was at the very end, when The Mayor thanked all three speakers for coming. No idea why I did it, but each time I heard his name, I screamed real loud a scream you might hear at the opening of a rock concert when the star walked on stage. I REALLY meant to be Highly Admirable of him........ to be complimentary. Charlton, just smiled and bowed to the crowd. I immediatley froze in case he looked around. The second time his name was spoken, I did the Xact same thing, and this time he extended his bow further, more graciously, and tipped his hand from his forhead, in circles towards the crowd. I remained frozen then. The third time, at the very end, I did it again. This time he was growling really pissed off like he owned the Universe and God had farted without his permission. He was searching the crowd for me, and looked like he was ready to kill this monkey. I was frozen looking ahead at him. ThankYouGod no one in the crowd pointed towards me or at me, or no telling what might have happened.

Years later I could understand why he may have been angered as it WAS a special moment for CARL, and not for him. Carl looked as though he were in a coma, in a wheelchair and never even blinked during the ENTIRE thing. HE didn't even look as though he would care if a house fell on him, too , or if he were in Kansas anymore. So I don't think HE even GAVE a Frick. Oh, well. All is well that ENDS well, right, CHUCK? (hahahehehoho)

      "MAD PROPHET OF THE AIRWAVES

I'll make this a quick one since I'm already a bit late getting this
report in tonight, and besides, a lot of what I've been through this
past weekend is similar to what happened the week before at the
      Ziegfeld.

Since I had such a great time for the Hollywood Classics with
screenings of Back to the Future, E.T: The Extra Terrestrial and Jaws,
I knew I was going to come back the next week for the 40th anniversary
screening of Planet of the Apes. Yes, the original 1968 classic, not
the crappy 2001 remake. 411's own Chad Webb joined me that evening and
he got to see first-hand what I had been discussing, and more.

What I expected was there. Gary and Seth were there once again, and
Gary introduced the screening just like last week. He did a great job
with it as well, getting everyone into the proper mindset before the
film began. However, there were plenty of people there that were
already in the proper mindset long before they made it to the theater.
Chad and I got to see a big batch of hardcore Apes fans, and they had
organized their own trip to the theater for this. Not only that, but a
Yahoo Group that is made up of fans designed, printed and folded their
own programs! Yes, not only did we get the movie in a gorgeous theater
and a proper introduction, but we also got something to read before the
      lights went down!

The movie was just as good – if not better – as it was the first time I
saw it. And even though there were plenty of moments that come off as a
bit weird these days (Charlton Heston laughing uncontrollably at the
beginning would be one of them), the ending is still one of the most
powerful moments in all of film, and it was terrific to see that the
way it should always be seen. When all was said and done, this was
another great example of how movies can be enjoyed. "

How about a scan of your program, James?

took her to that premiere and said she was very frail. He also said

What did Landsman say about Kim Hunter's reaction at the premiere of

I actually asked him that, and he said she was simply to gracious to
say anything negative -- but she knew it wasn't good.

Thank you, Helen.   I might have to wip out another Escape outfit for Zira, because this outfit is not for me to keep.   That said, I think I have found the perfect suit fabric for Cornelius...

I have seen the work you did on your own outfit, so I know you could do it.  Finding time is difficult for me too, but outfitting the dolls is such a pleasurable hobby for me, especially because it is Planet of the Apes-related.

What exactly are you talking about? I thought the 5.1 remix on the
BENEATH in the "Legacy" box set was fine, sound effects wise. The
music not being sourced from the stereo masters but from mono was what
bothered me. Hopefully the new transfers will have true stereo music
      on all the sequels.

      Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone here has the time to catch a screen grab of
Zira's carpet bag for me. (Thank you to the person who sent one a
couple years back. I lost it when I fried my previous computer.) I
have found one place in the cages at the zoo where the carpet bag is
in the foreground of the shot with the front of the bag right in front
of the camera. It's a good shot. I've paused it on my VCR and drawn
a picture of the bag, but it would be easier to match if I had a
photo. Also, the colors on my screen don't seem to be right. I have
found the edge of the bag behind a picture of C&Z cuddling on IMDB
(Escape). Those colors are more earthy. My TV shows a sort of
      cayenne/saddle/tan combo.

Does anyone know the history of the bag? I'd be interested to know
      whatever you do about it.

Thanks much... I'm hoping to find one like it.

C'mon, I thought he was throwing out a compliment! I think it shows a
feminine side to Zira -- and I think it was very thoughtful of her to
pack everyone's clothes!! If she hadn't brought that carpet bag, they

"You mean the "original" version of "Conquest"? (The alternate version
of "Battle" is already out on DVD). From what I recall it's a lot
bloodier, and yes, Breck is killed (which contradicts "Battle", where
it's said he was killed by radiation). It ends with "And that day is
upon you NOW!" and doesn't have the tacked on final moments."

Yes, and let's get something very straight here. These things are at
this moment are only "perhaps" kind of things. Nothing has been
confirmed. People at Fox are talking about this, want to get it done,
will try.... BUT, will it come to pass? Who knows?

And, I'd like to say that it's highly unlikely Fox is going to pay
licensing fees to other program producers to use clips from their shows
as extras. I wouldn't count on Carson clips.

Depending on your definition, Zira's carpet bag is the only McGuffin
in the POTA saga (I'm sure this can be debated, it doesn't create the

It's the first thing the Human's mention about the apes

"They brought them with them, sir. In that suitcase"

        "Suitcase?"

Then it's forgotton, until the end when its recognition comes back

Subject: Timeline of the Planet of the Apes
        .html
        .html Hi, folks,

Although I posted info on my site about this, I've held off announcing anything until now:

Timeline Books, a startup publishing company being launched by Edward Gross (co-author with Joe Russo of Planet of the Apes Revisited, creator of Voicesfromkrypton.com and author of tons of sci-fi- and TV/movie-related books over the years) and Joe Bongiorno (creator of Timelineuniverse.net and a co-writer of mine on some projects for Lucasfilm) are going to be putting out a print version of my Planet of the Apes timeline, which used to be posted online at my Hasslein Curve site (which they asked me to take offline).

I've completely rewritten and edited the timeline, adding a ton of new material and making it all a lot more approachable and accurate (when I first created the timeline, it was basically a data dump, and as such was waaaaay too wordy, but I was too tired after writing it to do a decent edit job).  The book will be titled Timeline of the Planet of the Apes: The Definitive Chronology--it'll be an unofficial publication, but I'm just as psyched about it as I would be if it were officially licensed--and is expected to be available this summer.  In putting together the print version, I managed to track down and interview a number of POTA comic and novel writers (including Doug Moench, Charles Marshall, Ty Templeton and a numbers of others).  In so doing, I learned a lot about Apes stories that were planned but never published, which I've worked into the timeline.

A cover image and additional information about the book will soon be available here:
        http://rhandley.0catch.com/POTA/

Timeline Books will also soon launch its official site.  In the meantime, the company is selling mugs, mousepads and t-shirts to advertise my book.  In case anyone is interested, here's the URL:
        http://www.cafepress.com/timelinebooks

Other titles are also in the works, from me and a few other authors.  Too soon to post any other details, though.

Given that all the directors are dead, my opinion is that the films
should be left in the edits that they have been for the last three to
four decades. Anything they find now is more likely than not to be
missing sound or be of picture quality inferior to the masters of the
movies anyway, and not only wouldn't look right stuck back into the
films, but would also lack scores. Jerry Goldsmith certainly score the
edit of PLANET we've always had.

There's no one left alive to pull a "George Lucas" with the APES films.
Mort Abrahams is the only producer alive and he's now very old.

As for CONQUEST... There the general release version and the preview
version. I think because the general release version has been out
there for so long, the preview version is really just a footnote now.
I'd like to see some surviving elements of what the preview version is
like, but I really can't believe Fox would now "restore" the preview
version and relegate the version that everyone knows to footnote
status. Besides, as Jeff Krueger says, BATTLE doesn't mention Governor
Breck dying the way he did in the preview version.

I would bet the Conquest scenes won't be edited in, and if the entire
print has been found, it will be included just as the Blade Runner work
print was. Not remastered, just presented as a curiousity piece.

          Hi everyone.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of one of Hollywood's most revered and dynamic actors:  Charlton Heston.  I'd been a fan of his for quite some time, before and after APES:  "The Ten Commandments", "The Omega Man", "Soylent Green", "Will Penny", "Ben-Hur", etc., but as far as I'm concerned, if he hadn't been in the first APES, I strongly believe that it wouldn't have become the classic box-office smash that it was.  Who could have played the role of Colonel Taylor better than he?

Mr. Heston made the APES saga one of the greatest movie series of all time that is will be enjoyed by future generations.

You will be missed, Colonel George Taylor.

I think they only did NATO films on the first two. Blu-ray BENEATH
should bloody well have as good a copy of the NATO film as PLANET did
            for its 35th Ann. Edition.

            We'll see.

Any word on the NATO films?

I would bet the Conquest scenes won't be edited in, and if the entire

print has been found, it will be included just as the Blade Runner work

print was. Not remastered, just presented as a curiousity piece.

J.A., Congratulations on your purchase...when you ordered the mask, did you purchase the pull-over mask or the one that comes in pieces?

Pictures, please!  I live vicariously through our group...Have you found the makeup to match your skin tone to the mask?  How often can you wear the mask before it becomes unuseable?

No.1: The mask come in a big square box not a bubble enveloppe.

No.2:The mask come with a styrofoam head display

No.3:The latex used is of good quality , its firm and strong and

No.4:Nice replica , when you pass your hands on the side of the mask
you can actually feel the ears of Cornelius.

No.5:The hair piece completely cover the back of your head.

Now i have to find the right make-up for my eyes to match the skin
color of cornelius.Anyone have any advice?

Not everyone has to upgrade. Some people are still in the VHS Age. Right, Ape Mom?

Sooner or later we'll all have to upgrade...hopefully later is what I'm saying.

Well, keep your fingers crossed then, because this info comes from the
main guy doing the extras, an independent production company. They
have no say as to what Fox will finally decide.

Even I'm not looking forward to having to upgrade all my stuff.

Yeah, just putting in an alternate ending wouldn't be enough to get me to buy
a Blu-Ray.  When they did Buckaroo Banzai it had lots of cool junk, but it was
the sort of thing you look at once and don't bother with again.  I get more
enjoyment out of the work print, because you get to hear what Peter Weller
really sounds like when he's playing guitar.  Not to mention effects scenes
prior to the effects being added.  Gives me respect for the actors imagination.
