That was the question we all asked ourselves before they cast Marky Mark
in the Burton fiasco. It's like asking who'd play Moses in a Ten Commandment
remake. I can't think of a single actor today who carries the weight for roles
like those. And though Heston himself wished he could have done a better job
I don't think there was anyone then or now who could touched him in them.
Russell Crowe as Ben Hur? I don't think so.

However, you have to remember there are now the "complete" scores of BENEATH, CONQUEST, and BATTLE courtesy of Film Screen Monthly. I'm sure that the unused cues from those CDs could be matched up to score any musically lacking scenes that may exist with spoken audio. Plus, there's always the chance that the "missing scenes" could get by without music if they're just dialog scenes. We'll wait and see what happens I guess.
And finally, about the comment about Breck's death differing in BATTLE from what was supposed to be in CONQUEST: BATTLE doesn't count much anyway, so let Breck's CONQUEST bloodletting begin. ***

Anything they find now is more likely than not to be missing sound or be of picture quality inferior to the masters of the movies anyway, and not only wouldn't look right stuck back into the films, but would also lack scores. Jerry Goldsmith certainly score the edit of PLANET we've always had.

Hey, Jeff. It's good to see you.
Yeah. My 5 piece set is VHS. I play them on my brand new (2
Christmases ago) HD TV. We watched Planet tonight. How sad. I
should have stayed home from NY. I was spoiled, and now my pixelated
pictures are a pretty sore sight!
One day maybe...

Any deleted scenes from them that are found in FOX's archive should be included seperately in the Special Features section, not cut into the existing films.

If they've got the complete early cut of
"Conquest" they should release that as is. That was J. Lee's and Arthur's vision
more than the bastardized one. I agree with what was said about "Blade Runner",
there was like 5 versions of that. Just label them.
I agree the cut scenes in "Planet" and
Escape" (if they find them) should be in a "deleted scenes" extra.

Yeah, but restoring a film is like restoring a painting. It's as much
what you leave out as what you put in, and from what I understand
all they have is stuff that was left out. And if the restorer tries to
recreate the artists intent it could be a little dicey. I'm sure no one
wants a beloved film butchered by cutting room bits with hunks
bonafide soundtrack pieces from other bits of the film slathered
over them to give them the slightest sense of legitimacy to them.

I think that's what they did with the
restored "Battle", just put everything they could find in it (to make a longer
running time for TV). I don't know if they consulted J. Lee Thompson but maybe
they had to per DGA rules.

Remember, the extended version of BATTLE was around from the time the
film was first syndicated for TV. It's a different story. The preview
version of CONQUEST was buried in the vaults someplace. It would be
nice if it were found intact, but again, I think it should only be
offered as an extra, much like the way the "Roadshow Version" of THE
SAND PEBBLES (1966) was offered as an extra on the second disc of that
film's recent 2-Disc "Cinema Classics Collection" edition (reviewed by
me here:
http://www.thesandpebbles.com/2007_dvd_review/2007_tsp_review.htm)
Maybe what we could do here is list, one film at a time, the extras we
like to see and then debate them. Start with PLANET, of course.

One place has offered to make a run of 80 - 90 bags -- no $$$/bag

individually woven bag. ;)

Hey, that pretty much covers it. I can think of a few you didn't
mention.
I'd like to get a serious commentary track this time, well-written and
not just Mort Abrahams and Eric Greene in a room someplace, but one
that utilizes all the recordings of McDowall and Hunter we have so far.
And this time NO DEAD SPOTS.
Besides an isolated score, I'd like a new "score commentary" track,
such as has been done on "Fantastic Voyage," "Von Ryan's Express," and
"The Sand Pebbles" with CD producer Nick Redman and others. The
commentary Jerry Goldsmith did for the 35th Anniversary had so much
dead time that it really should be edited down to just a featurette
with clips from the film and a suite of the music in the background.
Hold overs from the 35th Anniversary should be the NATO film, both
trailers and a much more extensive still gallery.
When I was at Joe Russo's I saw slides of the make-up tests. One had
Frank Schaffner standing in front of McDowall and having him do
different facial expressions. I also saw very early makeup and
wardrobe tests, and I saw that motion picture cameras where there. So
this is all in the archives, I'll bet.
Fox is also doing "interactive pressbooks" now, and I'd also like to
see a poster gallery.
Can anybody think of anything else?
I'd also like original ad art on the cover too!!!! The 1-sheet image
would -- finally -- be nice!

.html "NATO" in this instance stands for National Association of Theatre
Owners." Arthur P. Jacobs used to like to make a short film of clips
from his forthcoming movies to show to the theatre owners when they'd
have their annual meeting. This helped get the film booked.
The 35th Anniversary Edition of PLANET included a mint copy of its NATO
film, but we only have poor video tape dubs of BENEATH's around as
bootlegs.

That's what I said. An alternate version.
But judging from J. Lee's comments in "Behind", I think it's his preferred

She did a great job on the costume! I like the ingenious way you guys did the glyphs. Always good to see other work so you can apply these ideas to your own work. The light wool is what I think I want my costume to be (I am always cold anyway), so it would be perfect. The picture of the mask from Ape Mania--Is that the pull-over mask? Would you be able to glue parts of the mask onto your face to be able to make facial movements? So exciting to see people in costumes...
Even if I can't afford the Ape Mania makeup for awhile, at least I would have my costume started.

“Inside Oscar: The Unofficial History of the Academy
Awards”
The Big Night : April 14, 1969
The 41st Annual Academy Awards
“The (choreographer Gower) Champion touch was felt
during the presentation of the Costume Design Award.
As Jane Fonda read the nominations, she was backed by
an ersatz rock band, the Soul Rascals, and dancers
wearing the nominated costumes. Romeo and Juliet did
the jerk; “Lion In Winter’s” Henry II and Eleanor the
frug; showgirls from “Star!” shimmied in their early
40Â’s tassled outfits; Fagan, the Artful Dodger and
Oliver bopped about: and finally, one of the apes from
“Planet of the Apes” was found sitting next to a
surprised Jack Wild in the orchestra before bounding
onstage to thrash among the other dancers. The winner,
“Romeo and Juliet”’s Danilo Donati, was absent, so the
barefoot Jane boogied out among the costumed dancers
and handed the Oscar to Romeo, who held it aloft.”
Anybody have a pic or clip of this?? I'm also looking
for pics of John Chambers getting his Oscar from the
chimp and Walter Matthau.....(I thought I had some but
can't find them) ........Oddly there is no mention of
this segment in the book!
Where can one find old Oscar footage? Would you have
to go to the Academy in LA and ask to see footage? I'm
sure they wouldn't release it because of
copyrights.....Jeff.....why don't you swing by there
and ask!! lol

.htmlHelen, from the photographs/screen shots, it looks like you could easily make this carpet bag yourself. You would just need to find a similar type of carpet pattern...perhaps you could visit some rug shops that sell small-sized ones specifically used for kneeling/worshipping, and sew two of them together. Just my first thoughts...

One place has offered to make a run of 80 - 90 bags -- no $$$/bag
given. It would save on the cost of "well over $1000" for one individually woven bag. ;)

ahead and make one. I read that the type of carpet bag that Zira had
may have been made with a runner. I've been looking at patterns
on-line (no local rug shops) to try to find a matching pattern. No
luck, yet. It looks like three patterns, some fringe, and maybe some
embellishment around the clover-like pattern on the front.
I'm learning a lot about these things. The difference between a
tapestry bag and a carpet bag, for instance. Very interesting. In
the meantime, I have become quite fond of this particular bag...
especially after seeing SO MANY others!!! And.. I haven't yet found
anything even remotely close.
So, eventually I'll probably find some tough sewing machine needles
and press on.
If you do it first, let me know.

How about "drawing" the pattern onto those fabrics that people use for counted cross stitch...and then after the pattern is drawn out in the exact color that is needed, all you would have to do is to embroider your Xs onto the fabric. This would take forever, of course, but you could daydream about Planet of the Apes while you're doing it...and the "carpetbag" would actually be VERY light!

I'm going to see if I can find what I am looking for the next time I am at the fabric shop. I would add the fringe as well, but the shape would definitely be very different from Zira's, but the pattern would be there...

look. It's very feminine and surprisingly frilly. When you are an
ape stuck in the city for a few hours, you have to have SOMETHING to
carry your people costume in! ;)
Best case scenario? The carpet bag should fit in my backpack and the
backpack should fit in the carpet bag... along with whichever costume
I don't happen to be wearing.

the POTA pie for way too long, and it's time someone like Joe Russo (or
his writing partner) or even our own Mr. Monteith get their shot at it.
Why "they" (as in the producers of the BEHIND documentary and the
distributor of the TV series soundtrack CD) think Eric Greene is some
sort of world renowned APES authority is beyond me. Yes, he wrote his
book and all and that's fine, but someone who wrote a glorified college
thesis is nowhere near the authority with real knowledge as some of the
other people are, and it's time they get their time in the spot-light
so to speak. Let us not forget that Mr. Russo and company also wrote an
APES book, which is streets above anything that was in Eric's book, so
Joe and company are what the new APES DVD (set) will need. New blood
for all new in depth commentaries. I have heard, but never confirmed
that Joe has a tape recording of himself and Don Taylor watching
ESCAPE, and he and Ted Post watching BENEATH. Now I do not think they
have to include those tapes, but what I'm getting at with them is that
maybe Joe could shed some more insight into those films by what's on
those tapes. For instance he could say "I remember at this point in the
film, Don Taylor said to me" and things like that.
And, I have one thing to add to that list of wanted extras: How about a
set of miniature US and foreign posters like they included with the
release of the original KING KONG and THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY.

When I hear a recording of my own voice I cringe, but I agree with you
about Eric Greene. His book was initially interesting but he far
over-stated his case, and it was all really his opinion. Most of the
filmmakers of the series won't agree that any of the subtext he talks
about was much on the forefront of their thoughts.
As far as Joe Russo goes, yeah, he's got all these recorded interviews,
but even he wouldn't want it to be "the Joe Russo show."
So, I don't know who should do a PLANET commentary, just as long as
it's not Richard Schickel. Man. that guy's boring.
Oh, and another thing I forgot to mention.... In the original PLANET
pressbook it mentions "Radio Open-End Interviews" with someone named
Dick Strout. Well, there's a nearly forgotten 1967 Doris Day movie
called CAPRICE (Leon Shamroy and Robert Gunner are in it) and on the
Fox DVD are a couple of these "Dick Strout" radio interviews. Now if
Fox Home Entertainment can find those for CAPRICE, why couldn't they
find them for PLANET?

Yes, the original version opened with a

exactly remember where, I think where Caesar is running around before he gets

Mine would also be much smaller, and remade as a purse. Helen, if you wanted to keep the exact size and shape of Zira's suitcase, it would probably be perfect for toting around your costumes.

Yes, the original version opened with a chimp being hunted down and killed. They used part of it in the movie, don't exactly remember where, I think where Caesar is running around before he gets caught.

I hope the "alternate version" opens with the beat-up chimp running for its life...that WAS filmed (and omitted), right? Or am I imagining things?

I guess it depends on how claustrophobic you are.
I can stand it a couple few hours if it's not hot.
Though people have gone a couple days in it.
I don't know if it was this group or the other

Yeah...that was me. At the haunted house I
run, my son, friend, and I have also been in make up for 3 days straight.
Foam isn't bad, it just gets annoying sometimes. Latex masks are a
different story. If the mouth is open and the nostrils line up and you
pack the back of the mask so it's against your face, you can wear a POTA mask
for 8 hours easy. Or at least I did.

Subject: [pota] Where is Landis?
I missed an opportunity at San Diego Comic Con a few years back, the
year the Archives card set was released. I was looking at the archives
display, no one was around, and I hear a voice behind me "Oooo, Planet
of the Apes!" I turn around and its John Landis with a child in hand.
Not being a fan of his films, I smiled & turned around to look at the
display again. Later I wanted to kick myself, because I never could
find him in Battle, and should have asked how to spot him. I'm
assuming, that since he is credited as Jakes friend, he is the balding
man with the long hair helping with the wagon wheel in the opening? The
only clue I have is the Famous Monsters article says he has long hair.
I've only seen him with a full head of hair, which now I'm assuming is
a toupee... Am I correct?

Yeah, the last THX "anamorphic" transfer has a 5.1 remix, but it's all just
remixed mono. I hope most of ESCAPE's music can be found in true
stereo.

That's not Landis.
Landis can be seen in the opening credits, with a beard and long hair,
looking at the camera, and when Aldo issues the order to round up all the
humans, Landis is the first one grabbed.

.html In Beneath, Zaius seems more intelligent than man, mutant, or ape. He
seems far better equipped to deal with the the hallucinations. He
rides into the fire, doubts the bleeding Lawgiver, and withstands the
fall of the Great Lawgiver statue. He trusts his knowledge and goes
against the visions. Are we supposed to think it is BECAUSE he lacks
intelligence, as the mutants suggest? Common sense dictates that it
is BECAUSE he is intelligent enough to doubt the impossible and
unlikely and go with what he knows to be truth.
Inside, he knows the danger of the bomb and tries to warn the gorillas
before they pull it down. He fears that man will detonate the thing,
and, indeed, man does.
He continuously wrestles with the fact that he is both keeper of the
faith and minister of science. He has a dilemma, and he has to
reconcile that within himself. It is a struggle for him throughout
both movies.
I believe he is probably the most intelligent (with the information he
has) of all the beings assembled on the planet at that time -- except
for maybe Milo, who escapes with Cornelius and Zira.

He's not smart enough to not piss Taylor off when he's packing

But seriously, he's the only one who doesn't believe in the illusions
because of his faith.
It doesn't take intelligence to have blind faith. That's why Taylor

his faith when, in Planet, he has Cornelius read from the Scroll and
then goes on to suggest that man made a mess of the planet when they
had the chance.
He doesn't want man to take over. He may well use his "faith" to

Yes, I am sure. I couldn't remember if he had a beard or not.
Looks like not. That's him under FRANK during Frank Capra Jr.'s credit,
and that's him who gets grabbed and yells "Hey!" He'd just had SCHLOCK
released and went on the Jonny Carson show and that's where Arthur Jacobs saw
him and offered him a bit in BATTLE, but in 1969 Landis worked in the Fox mail
room and saw BENEATH in production.
By the way, I can't stand John Landis, blame him for those deaths on the
set of TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, and I think Hunter's favorite movie is AN
AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, which is the only Landis film I like.

They hunted for pleasure, performed experiments, supposedly to further their knowledge, but in reality to cut down on the human population. They hid facts about ape society and human society and how the two came about.
Yeah, superior to humans my foot.
