Silverman may have had some say in POTA in 1974 as he was the Vice President
of programs at CBS from 1970-1975. He may have had ultimate say - but it
was propably more likely he just wanted it cancelled cause the ratings were
low. I have to presume as a businessman that he would have kept it going
if it was making money !!
Fred Silverman was born in 1937, and quickly grew up into the television
business. After starting out in the mail room of ABC-TV in the late 1950s, he
rose to director of program development at WGN-TV, Chicago in the early 60s. One
day, he abandoned his car during a snowstorm and boarded a plane for New York,
where he gained a position as head of Daytime Programming at CBS-TV. In 1970, he
became the programming head of CBS, where he programmed such hits as "Mary Tyler
Moore" (1970), "All in the Family" (1971), _"M*A*S*H"(1972)_, _"The
Jeffersons"_, _"Kojak"_ and _"Sonny & Cher"_. In 1975 he left for ABC-TV,
where he worked closely with Michael Eisner and Brandon
Tartikoff. He developed such new hits as "Laverne &
Shirley" (1976), "The Love Boat" (1977), _"Donnie & Marie"_ and
_"Soap"_. By the end of the 1977-1978 season, ABC was number one, Daytime and
Nigttime. In 1978, he joined NBC as President and CEO. His presence helped stem
the audience erosion of the prior 5 years with new programs such as _"Different
Strokes"_, _"Real People"_ and _"Hill St. Blues"_. During his tenure, he made
program commitments that led to _"St. Elsewhere"_ and _"Cheers"_, promoted Brandon
Tartikoff to President of Entertainment and laid the groundwork for
NBC's turnaround in the 80s. Management changes at parent RCA led to Silverman's
departure in June, 1981 and his replacement by Grant
Tinker. Silverman formed "The Fred Silverman Company," and became an
independent producer. Among his successes were _"Perry Mason Movies"_,
_"Matlock"_, _"In the Heat of the Night"_, _"Jake and the Fatman"_ and
_"Diagnosis Murder"_. Silverman remains in the independent production business
and also does program consulting. IMDb Mini Biography By: L.L Hubbard
Trivia
During his 1978-1981 run as president of NBC, he was often lampooned by John
Belushi on "Saturday Night Live" (1975).
Program Executive, WGN-TV, Chicago, 1959-1963. Vice President of Daytime,
CBS; 1965-1970. Vice President of Programs, CBS; 1970-1975. President, ABC
Entertainment, 1975-1978. President & CEO, NBC; 1978-1981. Independent
Producer, 1981-Present.
Many of Silverman's early attempts at television series until 1985 were all
failures. His first major success was the series "Matlock" (1986), followed by "In the Heat of
the Night" (1988).
Following his huge successes as Head of Programming at both CBS and ABC, he
managed to astound everyone by giving NBC some of its worst seasons in years.
Many of the shows that premiered on his watch failed, the situation getting so
bad that Johnny Carson quipped that NBC stood for Nine Bombs
Cancelled.
The character of Fred "Freddie" Jones in "Scooby Doo,
Where Are You!" (1969) was named after
him <.html <.html

INTERESTING QUOTE FROM WIKIPEDIA
When Paley stated that he was a fan of CBS's 1960's western Gunsmoke,
viewers knew Matt Dillon (played by James Arness) would never
come to serious harm in the show. In fact, Paley was such a fan of Gunsmoke, he
demanded, upon its threatened cancellation in 1967, it be reinstated
somehow...and this led to the abrupt demise of Gilligan's Island, which
had already been renewed for a fourth season.
PALEY sounds like a very smart shrewd
businessman. He was 73 when POTA aired so I doubt he had any
interest in a show like that for sure. But he may have also had no control
or say at that time in his career.
The relationship between Paley and his news
staff was not always smooth. Paley's friendship with Ed Murrow,
one of the leading lights in the CBS news division and by then a
vice president, suffered
during the 1950s over the hard-hitting
tone of the
Murrow-hosted See It Now series. The
implication was that the network's sponsors were uneasy about some of the
controversial topics of the series, leading to Paley worrying about lost revenue to the
network as well as unwelcome scrutiny during the era of McCarthyism. In fact, See It
Now lost its Alcoa sponsorship in 1955 and
eventually its weekly Tuesday time slot, though it continued as a series of
specials until 1958.
In 1959 James T. Aubrey,
Jr. became the president of CBS. Under Aubrey, the network became the most
popular on television with shows like The Beverly
Hillbillies and Gilligan's
Island. During the 196364 television season, fourteen of the top
fifteen shows on prime-time, and the top twelve shows of daytime television were
on CBS. Aubrey, however, fought constantly with Fred W. Friendly of CBS
News, and Paley did not like Aubrey's taste in low-brow programming.
Aubrey and Paley bickered to the point that Aubrey approached Frank Stanton
and proposed a take-over of CBS. The take-over never materialized, and in 1965,
when CBS's ratings began to slip, Paley fired Aubrey.

The commercial release almost looks like a brand-new cartoon. Lots
and lots better than the DVDs I did (though they were the best
available before that commercial release).

But Roddy's version sounds more plausible. Paley had the power override the President of CBS and the Network's heads of programming to bring back Gunsmoke after it had been canceled. He would also have the power to put on a series without a pilot. Silverman never had the power to do that over Paley's objections.

I would bet FOX got the idea from I.T.C. who was the master of doing
the same much eariler with their various TV series - SPACE:1999, UFO,
CAPTAIN SCARLET, THUNDERBIRDS.
Only nice thing about the FOX ones was that when they were frist aired
they did so with intros and outs that had Roddy back in make-up.

Fox did the same thing with the TIME TUNNEL 1966 TV series. It lasted only
one season so they spliced 2 episodes together at a time and made several TV
movies for syndication. Like Rory said, a way to make back some bucks on an
expensive TV experiment that failed.

OK you could very well be right
i know the ratings were down but perhaps not down
enough to be the reason to cancel it
the ratings still would have definitely been higher
than Star Trek that year
*** Not true... I mean maybe the ratings were down, I'm not sure of
that, but I know that it WAS renewed for a forth season... It might have been
Sherwood Schwartz that mentioned it, or maybe even Bob Denver, but the fact of
the matter is they were told they were renewed and then the cast went ahead
and started to spend the money they thought they'd have because of a forth
season... Little did they know the rug was soon to be pulled out from under
them... ***

Thanks, Ron. It was commissioned from an Argentine artist named
Patricio Carbajal, who's tremendously talented. He's currently
illustrating a new comic-book series Timeline Books is putting
together, written by Ed Gross and Joseph Bongiorno, and I believe he
might also be providing cover illustrations for other projects they
have in mind as well. <.html

Gunsmoke was TV's No. 1 ranked show from 1957 to 1961 before
slipping into a decline after expanding to an hour. In 1967, the show's 12th
season, CBS planned to cancel the series, but widespread viewer reaction
(including a mention in Congress and pressure from the wife of the head of
programming at CBS) prevented its demise. The show continued on in a different
time slot: early evening on Mondays instead of Saturday nights, cancelling the
popular Gilligan's
Island in the process <.html <.html

Tomorrow is the 45th Anniversary of the publication of Boulle's original novel; so it seems like an appropriate time to celebrate the publication of our friend Rich Handley's "Timeline of the Planet of the Apes" by featuring the book's excellent cover art on the group's home page (http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/). The book was originally slated for a summer '08 release, but it looks

Actually, I know nothing about him. He's apparently worked with Ed
Gross before, and is currently working on some other projects for
Timeline Books as well, that are in the works for next year. He's
from Argentina, and he's extremely talented. That's about all I know. :)

Thanks, Bill! Taking the site down was a bittersweet decision, as I
was excited by the implication--that I now had a book coming out
instead--but at the same time, I hated to take down all that
info. Still, given the EXTENSIVE rewrite and editing the timeline
went through for publication, it's ultimately a good thing I took
down the online version of the content, which was way too wordy and
in desperate need of copy-editing.

That's about the time I first saw PLANET in the movies in Brooklyn (maybe at a

Billing is usually something that is negotiatied by an agent as part of an actor's contract. That's why Lou Wagner has such high billing in Conquest. Although they reduced his part to practically a cameo, they were still contractually obligated to give him the co-star billing.

Please stop with the sexism allegation. There was no sexism. Stars
had different "billings" based on their box office appeal. Kim was a
supporting player on the big screen at least, for her entire career.
Also, Hunter's reputation had been somewhat controversial during the
50's "red scare"-era when she was accused of communism. This would
also have effected her "star billing" position. Charlton Heston got
top billing because he was ten times the "star" as anyone else in the
cast. If it had been a Joan Crawford vehicle, then in that case, a
woman would have received star billing.

.htmlToday is the 37th anniversary of ESCAPE's premire back in 1971. (It is also the 41st Anniversary of principle photography begining on PLANET.)
To celebrate ESCAPE's anniversary, and since the program booklet put together for the revival showing of PLANET at the Ziegfeld was such a hit, a program booklet has been put together for ESCAPE which is now available in the group's Files Section: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pota/files/Programs/Escape%20Program.pdf
A big thank you to Dave Ballard, Mark, Greg and Hunter for providing some of the pics used.
