My thoughts exactly... That's why I think those "fan-fics" and anything else that have Caesar changing his name from Milo are bullsh*t. Of course Armando was the one who changed his name.

best. As usual they referrred to the little boy as Itchy, (after the
little boy Ichy, in the Gamera movies). There were also a great number
of POTA referrrences. You can still get copies of this and other MST3K
movies at some private sights throughout the net. Google and you shall
recieve.

Hmmm, interesting. I'm going to have to take a look/listen to my copies
again and see if I can find one where it happened. Again, I could just be
thinking of TV broadcasts though.
BTW, any idea what TV stations used to get when they ran old movies?
Dubs from a studio master?
16 mm film? Different things depending on the title?

>>I mean audio tape, like the tape the original sound tracks would be
stored on. Videotape is magnetic. But video is recorded on a spinning drum
head at an angle, instead of one pass over a vertical head like audio tape
is. Because of that you're less likely to get a magnetic bleed through over
long periods of time. <<<.html <.html

.htmlI know in the 70s, even the late 70's 16mm prints were used by many
stations. In NYC channel 11, or "11 Alive" was still using 16mm
prints for many of their movies and even syndicated TV series - like
SPACE: 1999. I still have a bunch of 16mm spots for films and even
SPACE: 1999 promos. But by as least 1979 video tape stated coming in
taking the place of a lot of prints.
I remember speaking with one of the editors for CBS in NY - remember
that whern film on TV where edited not only for time but for
content. CBS always had a heavy hand and cut alot. Once BENEATH was
actually scheduled in a 90min time slot w/commericals! I had called
and complained how much of the film was cut - in the end in that time
slot literally only half the film 40 + mins were actually shown!
CBS also cut the hell out of PLANET and I was shocked to see so much
more when it air a few year later on a local ABC station during what
was then called the 4:30 movie. PLANET was shown in 2 parts - the
rest of the films were heavily edited for 90 mins slots. I remember
it was then I saw a promo for BENEATH, which was edits from an actual
trailer which as since never shown itself again - including on DVD.
I still have it on audio tape, since home video players weren't
around yet.
Back then it was so much easier for edits to be made with film rather
the newer videotape. Also, most in those departments were still from
the age of film.
By the early 80's some stations even had special automatic enhancers
which were used to "adjust" color and contrast for televised film
content. These machines were on automatic and would play havoc
trying to correct what it precieved as discolorations. If a tint was
used as an effect in film the machine would try to override the image
and re-set it causing a weird shift until it thought it corrected the
problem.

.htmlLike 1939, 1968 was an important year in world history and a great year for movies. Of course 1939 ended badly with the beginning of WWII while 1968 ended on a high note with the Apollo 8 mission. But 1939 saw the release of such classics as Gone with the Wind, Gunga Din, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach and The Wizard of Oz while 1968 had classics like 2001, The Odd Couple, The Producers, The Graduate (which premiered in late December '67 but ran mostly in '68) and of course POTA.

.htmlNIce theory John but you're mistaken on a few points. It was Paley who wanted the Apes series. Silverman was annoyed that it was forced on to his schedule which is why he moved it from it's original Tuesday night time slot to the Friday night death slot. Also, CBS wouldn't see a penny of the merchandising revenue. All that would go only to FOX.

I know unlike TCM, AMC does cut for content and time. Since I didn't
watch it all this time can someone answer if they did cut anything?
Also, in the segment I saw the color look very good, but the over-all
picture seem a bit dark.
It's always interesting to see which master is shown when aired
sometimes it can an old one, or even one newer that on DVD.
AMC is still showing the better master of THE EXORCIST, but cut of
course.

.htmlI am rewatching it at the 10:30 showing (PST), and I noticed that they cut out a big part of the crowd scene, when they pan the camera and after Taylor says "Take your stinking paws off me..." I was looking for that horrible male chimp with a nervous tick on his face but he was edited out.
I have one eye on the computer and another on the tv, so that was the only thing glaring I noticed.

watch it all this time can someone answer if they did cut anything? Also, in the segment I saw the color look very good, but the over-all picture seem a bit dark. It's always interesting to see which master is shown when aired
sometimes it can an old one, or even one newer that on DVD. AMC is still showing the better master of THE EXORCIST, but cut of course. - Scott

They had a host with two movie critics and two fans (and I'm using the term lightly here) discussing the film for about a minute at some of the commercial breaks. The two fans also had to answer trivia questions about the film to win the title Ultimate POTA fan. Neither of them really seemed to know much about the film, especially the woman. The worst offence was when the reveled the scene voted best in an online poll. It was the final scene which they played in the break before the end of the film.

AMC hasn't been worth turning on since they changed their name from

I'm sure it was a little time compressed. I couldn't watch the
broadcast. I hate that pan & scan transfer and can't stand all the
commercials. I liked hearing the comments of the two critics, but it was
all too ridiculously brief. Really, I can't believe this is the same
channel that had the 30th anniversary stuff ten years ago. Talk about

.htmlI would think it was just a matter of being safe. Pink has been
connected to gay pride pre-rainbow association – I don't think pink
was the gay color of representation back then. I wasn't connected
with any nations either which would make it a "safe" choice in terms
of color.
POTA as a series can be paralleled to many groups and cultures
throughout human history since it was meant to be a mirror of man,
but the mid to late 60's was such a hot bed of social upheaval I
don't think the studio or those on the production end really wanted
to point on particular finger to anyone in terms of representation
via a flag – whether it be with color, colors or pattern. Not only
would it pigeon hole them but it could be insulting.
In wasn't until CONQUEST that members of the "black" audience found
themselves relating to the social indignities of the apes as slaves
that group felt connected. But then again there are references to
the enslaved apes being like the Hebrews with Creaser being their
savior, an ape Moses leading his people to the Promised Land where
they can have their own religion and so on.
My deceased bother who was an historian once told me that the flag
color belonged to a black liberation group, but I never found
anything to back that up. It does seem possible it might have
somewhere in the world, but it didn't get much recognition. My
brother had an incredible eclectic knowledge, especially military, so
it might be a very small radical group he spoke of that came and went
in the 60's. If were around today he probably would be able to point
out severs sources since he purchased many books that were not
published in the US where publishers are overly sensitive as to what
will sell over being informative.

.htmlRory,
I don't "hate" them per-say I hate the way they take advantage of the
public. Having worked for various companies as a consultant it's
disgusting when I see a smaller company, like Anchor Bay who does so
much for their releases. They go the extra mile to provide better
transfers, and bonus materials while working with a much smaller
budget available. They secure the time and effort to give the
public, and the fans what they want. I know firsthand what they go
through to procure elements and multiple transfers until everything
hits the street. Are they perfect? No. But FOX who has a larger
slate to contend with can take their time to get it right, and
don't. They are in control of what they have. They "own" their
releases unlike smaller companies who buy the rights for a given time
to release their product – not to mention have share their profits
with the larger company they bought the right from.
FOX is putting deal with their own product, in their own vaults.
While a smaller company has to deal with many locations, perhaps
around the world not to mention the past companies who may also have
owned the rights to a give title.
It's a very complicated thing but at least FOX is more in control of
what they produce and it should yield better product – it they really
cared about the product. The APE franchise is popular. Perhaps not
as popular as we here would like to believe, but it is a source of
revenue for FOX. If it weren't they couldn't have "exploited" it as
they have with multiple releases in home video and various formats.
But at the same time the poor way they have presented is always half
baked – always falling very short of what it can and should be. That
is taking advantage of the public, especially the fans who fork over
money in hopes of getting something better than before. If POTA was
in the controlling hands of one person, like a Lucas as with STAR
WARS there would be a single greedy persona to blame. But it isn't,
so I blame the company who controls it.
I know FOX has been offered so much by fans eager to aid them in
truly great release. Some of this has even been offered for free.
When that is the case, and the studio turns it down it shows they
just don't care. Then again, the same is true for WARNER BROS. which
release like THE EXORCIST, EXORCIST II, SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, WOLFEN,
THE SWARM, IT'S ALIVE. For A&E with SPACE: 1999 along with most of
the I.T.C. catalog.
FOX is not unique is doing what they do – however, we here are
concerned about POTA, and for that I do feel it hasn't been properly
handled.

Is the only actor to appear in all five films in the 'Planet of the Apes' series. He played an ape in all of them except for Escape in which he played a human, General Faulkner. It was also the only one of the films in which he was credited. |

Why not? Star Trek didn't get their last season because he studio head's

.htmlTrue Roddy was foggy on many things but on that point he was pretty clear. Also, if you go back and reread the Lenard interview, he didn't even remember Paley's name; the interviewer fed it to him. And remember Paley was Silverman's boss. There would have been no way that Silverman would have been able to get a show on the air without a pilot if Paley objected to it. But Paley could easily put any show on over Silverman's objections.

Anyway, it's hard to say exactly who did what, etc. but still, my guess is the Mark Lenard comments may be a bit more right on. Like I said, his interview happened while the show was still going on and as a co-star/insider on the set I'd think his comments maybe were more accurate. *** >

Hey everybody, Normally I don't like to show
off the stuff I make. But, these are getting me excited. I'm making
costumes for Comic Con. This is the FIRST time I'm getting in costume
since I started going in '76. Like i've said before, I'm going as a
soldier, my son is going as Julius, and our friend is going as Zira. The
shoes have always given me problems, in the past. Here are two pics of the
shoe forms on which I'll glue the fabric. She's practised walking in them
and has had no problems. They are a little shorter than what they're
supposed to be, but I did that to make it easier to walk.

*** Yeah, but if he was foggy on some things, how can you be 100% sure he was totally correct on that point? I mean just because it sounded
"correct" coming from him doesn't mean he was right. I mean look at it like this: The things he seemed unsure of could actually be right and he was just saying them with a bit of uncertainty just to cover his ass if he was incorrect on something, and what sounded 100% positive wasn't necessarily right... I mean look back a few months on the message board and you will see that a member was 100% sure that there was a scene in BENEATH where Ursus shot a protestor... Was that member right, absolutely not, though he said he was sure such a scene existed. Just cause it's said with clarity doesn't always make a point right... *** Also, if you go back and reread the Lenard interview, he didn't even remember Paley's name; the interviewer fed it to him.
*** Simple semantics... I will re-read it when I dig the issue out, but I recall it being that Mark just said the name wrong at first, but he seemed quite sure when he said about the President of CBS saying that he "Didn't want an APES show on his network..." Not recalling a name but still knowing his position is the same as saying who the dude is/was. ***

I missed some of the posts but am gonna jump in
and
hopefuly make some sense of all of
this
Gilligans Island on CBS - ratings fell in its 3rd
season - its last
and propably is why it was cancelled
Gunsmoke CBS ratings were getting worse and worse
each year and was less popular than
Gilligans Island in all 3 seasons
1964-1966
Something happened with Gunsmoke in the 1967-68
season which totally rejuvenated it
it ranked #4 of the year - way higher than
Gilligans Island had ever been
and Gunsmoke lasted another 8 years due to really
high ratings and become the longest running western of all time
Star Trek was indeed on NBC cause i just checked
and yes it was also cancelled after only 3 years
however please note its ratings were ALWAYS LOW
!! It was doomed as the ratings were never there
POTA was also on CBS so part of the story might be
true. But yes its ratings were low as well
i dont know how low but obviously didnt make an
impact with the viewers
I do wonder if it had more viewers than Star
Trek?
Does anyone know how to get Nielsen Ratings for low
rated shows?
