.htmlThe newer Blu players will do all that you asked, but.... be sure and read the breakdown carefully. The first ones released WOULD NOT. SONY really blew it when they first rolled out those players. You have to be very careful with making a Blu player purchase. There are a lot of features and improvments that the format allows, but NOT ALL players will do them. Usually the more money you pay the more features are available. I'm talking sound, and even ways to hook up your player to allow the most freedom to access thos special features.
If you don't have an HDMI hook up to your receiver for sound you might miss out on the best feature Hi-Def players have to offer. HDMI can carry not only great picture quality but high quality sound that is uncompressed and goes beyond present DVD. However, if you don't have a reciever with that HDMI input the only way you will get that sound is with regular
rca/analog inputs. But the problem is that not all Blu-players have 6.1 or 7.1 analog outputs. It's very frustrating that this format has be set up by the manufactures in such a slap shot way. No doubt the regular joe who has an interest in upgrading might get put off when finally looking into it. Once they realize that in order to get the most, or every possible plus out of the format they need to spend the top dollar it puts them off. ... and truthfully after doing a test of a Blu player againt top of the line standard players with an upconverting receiver I found there isn't much difference. Personally I have a Oppo. It is a standard player that blows away a $1200. Denon I was testing. The Oppo sells for under $200. and even plays PAL, Divix DVDRs too. To push things further there is a receiver by Anthem that has pro-grade upsampling in terms of making a standard DVD look like HD. I
mixt that with the Oppo and it's hard for people to believe it's not HD.
I'm not against Blu, I'm just against the way it is over priced and too confusing for the consumer. Not to mention the way the studios are ripping off the consumer with less than fully loaded releases. The idea that MASTER AND COMMNADER was released on Blu little more than a trailers while its standard DVD edition is a two disc full of bonus materials and not sells for less than the Blu version is horrible. It's bad enough some people out there purchased HD-DVD and now are stuck with it. What happens if Blu continues along its path of high prices and lackluster bonus materials and doesn't grow out of the 7% saturation point? Even if it doubles to 14% within the year how long can the studios continue to put money into a format that is so expensive to produce with such a growth rate? I say, play it safe, and wait. If anyone is going to plunk down
$700 for a player is it really worth it for a release that may not have all the bonus features on a standard release at double the price. Just be careful, do your research on all players to make sure you're getting all you pay for. - Scott B.

Seems like I remember reading recently that there's supposed to be an
update to the specs that will happen later this year, as well.
Existing players may or may not be upgradeable.

.htmlProfile 2.0 is the latest spec update. It mandates a full gigabyte
of local storage in the player, secondary video and audio decoders
for features like picture-in-picture and interactive audio, and an
internet connection. I recall that most current Blu-Ray players are
not upgradable to this profile. The Playstation 3 is one of the
exceptions. As far as I can tell, the Panasonic DMP-BD50 is the only
model released so far with Profile 2.0 right out of the box, and
that just came out this month with a list price of $699. There are
supposed to be more Profile 2.0 players out by the end of the year,
though. Hopefully at lower prices. I'm waiting for one of those. And
for something I really want to watch and own on disc in HD.
I'm pretty sure that all Blu-Ray players, even the early ones, were
backwards compatible and played regular DVDs, but I remember reading
that some of the early ones didn't play CDs. All of the newest ones
probably play DVDs and CDs and upconvert the DVDs to near-HD. Not
sure about DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs but I'd expect any name-brand player
to play those, too. You should absolutely check the specs of the
machine before you buy it, and test everything as soon as you get it
home and before you discard the box and packing materials.
I recorded HD versions of all the Apes films on my TiVo recently.
They were shown on Monsters HD, one of the Voom HD channels carried
by Cablevision (and formerly carried by Dish). I've only watched
Planet so far. I thought it looked amazing. I'm trying to work out
how do screen captures, and find time to watch the remaining four
films.

Just joined.
This is one Ape-tastic group!
I had a question about the sideshow 12" Ape heads.
I see from time to time on Ebay a sideshow ape head for sale.
Do the sideshow heads fit on a Hasbro type neck stem?
I'm very familiar w/ that style from messing around w/ GI Joe and
other assorted Hasbro 12" figures.
Thanks,

.htmlWIth all the talk lately of the probable release of all 5 films on Blu-ray (and more than likely standard DVD as well), plus the additional upcoming things like the EMCE Toys repros of the Soldier Ape and Cornelius, the possibility of new comics from Neil and Whitty, plus Rob's APES timeline book... I got to thinking that this year is turning out ok for APES items... We have all of the above, plus we just received a new SIMIAN SCROLLS not too long ago, with another one coming later this summer/early fall... All this is leading up to is a question regarding one of the most (if not the most) hyped 40th Anniversary tie-ins, the five issues of APE CHRONICLES...
From what I understood, all five issues were set to go, so I'm wondering who (if anyone) has received their issues yet? If so, what is the content like? Is it all 40th Anniversary related features/articles, or is there more to them? I know there were a few people on here who ordered them, and I'd
really appreciate hearing their feedback... I know Foster was supposed to receive a set, and if I remember right PotAfan (sp?) was gonna get them too.. So anyone who received them, let's have a review... Let your reviews of the 40th Anniversary issues of AC be the start of your reviews for all the new APES items we can look forward to this year... <.html

.html It's been a good month for APES in the British magazine market.
Of course, almost every single entertainment related publication
devoted some space to the passing on Charlton Heston - and rightly so.
The latest issue of 'Deathray' has a two page spread that is favorable
and refreshingly mistake-free. They say it 'Remains a classic slice of
cinematic SF, a genuinely great movie that has much to say. Of the
Burton remake they add " A disastrous, narratively incoherent movie
with a frankly nonsensical twist ending."
Perhaps the oddest reference to APES is in 'Total Film' who feature
the dinner scene from Burton's remake as the subject of their 'Moments
in movie history' monthly feature. I'm not sure what the actual
'moment' being celebrated was - maybe, after consigning the franchise
to the toilet it was when Fox finally pulled the flush?

Blu-ray DVD format may not dominate for years
By RYAN NAKASHIMA,
AP
Posted: 2008-06-01
13:58:29
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Blu-ray stomped HD DVD to become the
standard format for high-definition movie discs, but years may pass before it
can claim victory over the good old DVD. Noemi Velazquez, a 44-year-old
warehouse worker, can explain why. She took one look at the $399 price tag of a
Blu-ray player at a Best Buy store
in Glendale, Calif., and kept going. "I have to admit, Blu-ray is
great," she said. "(But) I'm going to wait until they go to half-price."
Analysts, movie studios and the Blu-ray Disc Association, a
manufacturing group, all say Blu-ray discs will eventually dominate video sales.
The question is when. Consumers are balking at the $300-plus cost of
most Blu-ray players especially because only limited movie titles are available
in the format. "People aren't going to pay three times as much for a
platform that's only half-baked," said Steve Wilson, a consumer electronics
analyst with ABI Research. Many also are waiting to see how cable,
satellite and online video services play out. But, above all, consumers seem
satisfied with standard-definition DVDs and players - even consumers who upgrade
to high-definition TVs that can tap into Blu-ray's sharper picture and clearer
sound. Velazquez said that because she was still paying off a $1,000
high-definition TV she bought in October, she was happy for now to keep watching
pay-TV movies and standard-definition DVDs on it. Sony Corp .-backed Blu-ray was crowned the
next-generation video technology in February after Toshiba Corp., creator of the
competing HD DVD format, abruptly said it would drop the fight. The move came
after Warner Bros. decided to join most other studios by going solely with
Blu-ray and video rental chains followed suit. Manufacturers are
planning a souped-up lineup of titles and special features on Blu-ray discs to
boost sales this summer and during the coming Christmas season in the hope that
Blu-ray can turn around the sagging home video market. And retailers are
creating new displays to explain Blu-ray's benefits. U.S. consumer
spending on home video rentals and purchases in all formats, including DVD, HD
DVD, Blu-ray and VHS, fell 3 percent to $24.1 billion last year. The figure was
expected to drop another 2 percent this year to $23.6 billion, despite a sixfold
increase in Blu-ray disc spending to $1.3 billion, according to Adams Media
Research. The Blu-ray increase is not enough to offset an expected 6
percent drop in overall spending on DVDs. Adams says it could take two
more years for Blu-ray sales to put the home video market back on a growth path.
"The group that bought $2,000, 40-inch TVs are the ones that will lead
the charge," said Tom Adams, founder of the research firm. "Everyone else will
come along when the price comes down." To jump-start the changeover,
studios are beginning to release movies in Blu-ray with enhanced bonus features
like picture-in-picture director commentary. The new bells and whistles are
meant to entice consumers to plop down as much as $10 extra for a Blu-ray disc
compared with a standard DVD. Blu-ray machine prices are starting to
drop. Wal-Mart Stores
Inc. began stocking a $298 Magnavox model in mid-May, said spokeswoman Melissa
O'Brien. That's cheaper than most alternatives but a hefty price hike from a
typical $50 DVD player. The format also faces sales challenges that DVDs
did not when they took over from VHS in the late 1990s. It doesn't save any
space compared with DVD, and there's no need to replace a DVD collection once
you buy a Blu-ray player because it will play your old discs. There also
is a proliferation of direct-to-home offerings appearing on cable, satellite and
the Internet that threaten to stop Blu-ray growth in its tracks. Blu-ray backers
say, however, consumers prefer physical copies of movies over virtual ones,
especially when some online rental services impose a time limit. And
Blu-ray's adoption curve is similar to - maybe even faster than - that of DVDs,
backers say. Blu-ray players, now available for three years, cost $100 less than
DVD players did at a comparable point in their life cycle, said Dorinda
Marticorena, a senior vice president at Warner Home Video, a unit of Time Warner
Inc. "DVD was exactly the same thing. Players were expensive and there
were not many titles. Lo and behold, the awareness went up and demand went up,"
said Andy Parsons, chairman of the association's U.S. promotion committee.
"It'll happen in good time." Blu-ray still has a long, uphill climb.
Last year, more than 101 million U.S. households could play DVDs, compared with
3.7 million that could play Blu-ray discs, including those with PlayStation 3
consoles, according to Adams. But that's double the 1.6 million DVD
devices that were in U.S. households in 1998, the comparable second year they
were available. By the end of 2008, 14.4 million U.S. households are expected to
be Blu-ray compatible, compared with the 9.4 U.S. million households that could
play DVDs in year three. Manufacturers and studios are preparing new
offerings to take advantage of a feature known as BD Live, which allows access
to enhanced Blu-ray bonus features over the Internet. It's available now on
Sony's PlayStation 3 game consoles. Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. added
a BD Live clip-sharing function on its horror flick "Saw IV" and plans to have
"Rambo" director Sylvester Stallone conduct an interactive exchange with viewers
about his director's cut. "It makes these discs almost alive," said
Lions Gate President Steve Beeks. The Walt Disney Co.
is set to rerelease the 1959 animated feature "Sleeping Beauty" in October in
Blu-ray with chat, trivia and video-messaging functions, just as its rerelease
of "Snow White" on DVD in 2000 introduced a then-revolutionary animated menu.
"'Snow White' made the mass market wake up to the potential of DVD and
helped demystify the technology," said Bob Chapek, president of Walt Disney Studios
Home Entertainment Worldwide. "'Sleeping Beauty' on Blu-ray a decade later
represents much the same thing."

.htmlThank you very much Steve, Jeff and Karyl. I have a photobucket account where I keep most of this stuff. I didn't want to inundate the group with my photos, so I just pick the ones I think would be most interesting to everyone. I probably won't get any of the EMCE toys coming out soon because I already have enough apes in the house (not including me, of course!). I love tailoring the clothes for the action figures. 1:6 scale is definitely easier than 1:9 scale just because it's bigger, and most fabrics hang better with the larger scale. I do both, time permitting.
In the 1:6 scale, I'm currently creating Burke outfits. After that will be Virdon's outfit, some Escape Cornelius suits and some Conquest Armando outfits, so I am one very busy but happy monkey.

Just thinking...If no one out there has a pattern
for you, use one of the outfits from either Hasbro or sideshow, as a base.
I made my own for my gorillas and Zira. But, if you take the costumes
apart, trace the pieces, scan them, then you can project them (if you have a
projector) on the wall on butcher paper.

So, what, you may ask, do Ted Kennedy and brain tumor vaccines have to
do with ...Apes.
Well, it is possible that one (or many) of Kelley's (the possible
Little Milo actress) children were included in the testing for this
vaccine.
"The GBM is an aggressive cancer with a poor prognosis, brain

need to find a way of getting the costume made up. Might end up joining a class
for sewing or dress making . I will try Jessica's idea and thanks for the
contact. If that fails will try projecting the costume parts.
Thanks everyone for your kindness. I have photos in the site of the make-up
experiments. Will update as I get nearer a costume.
My aim was to set up a channel on Youtube and do what the Trekkies and

I will set up the channel anyway and start gathering all the POTA material

Hope you are all well.

10 years ago I had one of the best POTA dedicated
websites on the internet
but overtime it "fell apart"
I really feel that POTA deserves a nice Fan Club
site
I want it to be a great useful site for dedicated
fans but more importantly to non-POTA fans
to draw them in with a great variety of useful info
on the series
that will make them want to watch these classic
movies etc.
Hunter's site landed up being what I originally
wanted mine to be 10 yrs ago
He now definitely has the best site for POTA
product for sure
so no sense going that same route
but I want something to lure new fans in
the 40th anniversary is a great time to do
this
I am still a bit short of time but it doesnt do us
much good having a website empty and useless
So if any fans would like to help participate in
helping upgrade the website I'd appreciate any help or input
I'm open to ideas from you all - thanks
Lets give POTA the support it needs this year
!

I have to wonder why anyone even cares? They're edited, pan & scan, full of annoying commercial interruptions. Really.... Why bother watching? If it was Turner Classic Movies, or even The Fox Movie Channel, but AMC?!? Forget about it!

| Subject: PLANET's Outdoor Cage area found |
.htmlFolks, I don't know if this has even been told by anyone else or not, but I've finally figured out where the outdoor cage in PLANET was located on the Fox Ranch (now Malibu Creek State Park). I don't know why it's taken me this long to find the spot on Google Earth, but I've finally found it. In fact it was staring me right in the face.
See if this link works for you. Hopefully it'll be of some help until I can get a map made. You need to zoom in as far as you can to see the Malibu Creek. Look for Century Lake (a dam in front of it can clearly be seen, then follow the creek downstream around the "Goat Buttes."
http://www.satellite-sightseer.com/id/7048/United_States/California/Calabasas/Malibu_Creek_State_Park
I think I now know pretty much where everything in PLANET was shot at the Fox Ranch. Well, I'm still not certain where that cliff was that Taylor got shot in the throat off, but I think I can guess.
Anyway, one of the things that's always confused me about the location of the outdoor cage in PLANET was that I thought the buttes behind it (and I'm talking about what you see directly behind Cornelius and Zira when they kiss) are the same ones in front of Ape City (and Century Lake). But I've finally discovered they're not. In fact what they are are the buttes above the Rock Pool (the hoses either removed or turned off and hence no waterfall there).
When you first see Cornelius in PLANET you can see some of the Malibu Creek behind him. This is an area of the creek below both the Rock Pool and the Century Lake area (where Ape City was constructed).
The outdoor cage was built atop the stone foundation of a Club Lodge that Fox removed after they bought the property in the forties. You can see the outline of the foundation in the crane shot of the outdoor cage, and the stone steps that Cornelius and Zira climb to get to the cage are actually the old steps to the lodge. They're still there and can be clearly seen on Google Earth.
By the way, the small "Ape House" in front of the steps is built against a hugh slab of rock, the other side of which appears later as the "Ape Council" meeting place in BATTLE.
I'm going to try in the future to get a good map made of these things. In the meantime, I'm sure many of you will be confused.

Another example of how humour fails to cross the Atlantic. I just found him incredibly annoying and had to switch off.

I know I went down to the rock pool which is close by but I never saw this trail....but are you sure it would be high enough? the cage area seemed like it was higher in elevation....this looks like it's down closer to the water....I found a small landing with a stair but it wasn't it....it was higher up the hill from this...

.htmlcurse you Rory! I was about to go to bed when I read this and I had to get the disc out and go through the movie and do screen captures and all BUT I think you are CORRECT! I think .....here's the proof...
Now follow carefully....
Figure 1 (enclosed) is the over head view of the spot. The yellow circle is the spot where I found and thought it might be the cage area but realised it was too small and too high up to have had the cage and zira's office there...the drop off is very steep and no water directly below as you can see when Cornelius starts up the stairs. There are some "ruins" there and a small platform and stairs but they are not right.
Figure 2 is the view from that spot (Looking south west).. Hence the yellow circle.
Figure 3 is from the film of course. Lucious and Zira driving off past the cage.....the steps leading down to the office are directly behind them (the direction they came from). See the rock formations in the red circle match Figure 2 as do the cliffs in the blue circle! and my photo is from a slightly higher elevation than the screen cap.....!
Now the big mystery is why I, standing on this plateau could not see the larger flat area below!
What do think class? Class?
I've been obsessed with this since last summer ....!!

TMPGEnc DVD Author is simple to use, lets you do all of the above, and
is prett inexpensive:
http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/index.html"
I've tried other authoring tools, but this one is, IMO, the best.
It's also what I've used for all the Apes DVDs I've produced.

No, it's not. The MASH sets were filmed further north up Malibu Creek from Century Lake. I'd say about three miles north of where Ape City was.

Yes! That is exactly what I'm talking about. (Thanks for capturing that image. How do you do that?)
That's the foundation of an old lodge that was built there, I think, in the 1920s. It was called something like Crag's Lodge. There's still a trail there called Crag's Trail. Anyway, after Fox bought the property in the '40s they removed the lodge. I guess the stone foundation was too much work to remove and could be easily disguised. I think they shot on it in a '50s Fox war movie called BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL.
Looking directly down on it like that I know it doesn't seem as if it could have the elevation it does in the movies, but it does. That big rock slab in front of the foundation is now called the "Planet of the Apes Wall" and is used by rock climbers that visit the park. As I've said, that's also where the "Ape Council" meeting place is in BATTLE and that gives you another view of the elevation.
Hopefully we'll get more photos of it soon.

The area you took your first two photos from is too far away. I'm sorry to cause you this anxiety, but this is what's great about this group. I've been bugged for years as to where the hell that outdoor cage set was in relationship to the Ape City set, but I'm glad I've finally figured it out. Bless Google Earth. A few years ago their photo of the area was so low res. that it was practically useless. Now they are fantastic. The big mystery for me is why I didn't spot this area months ago. I've known the cage sat atop the lodge foundation for some time. Anyway, it's a pleasure to be able to share my discovery with other fans.
Now you need to get back out to the park and take new photos, Tim!
By the way, everyone knows where the cornfield was and the Ape Town set from BATTLE, right?

.htmlFrom Cinemaretro.com:
This Friday, June 13, the landmark Loew's Theatre in Jersey City, New Jersey will be screening the 1968 sci-fi classic Planet of the Apes starring Charlton Heston to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the movie. Showtime is at 8:00 PM - and the following day, the theater will present three other simian-themed classics:a matinee of Might Joe Young and evening screenings of King Kong/ Son of Kong (both on a bargain two-for-one double bill.) If you feel there aren't enough big apes on the screen, you can also meet our illustrious editor-in-chief Lee Pfeiffer, who will be introducing Planet of the Apes on Friday (and revealing a bit of news that will excite Ape maniacs!)
The Loew's is true movie palace that is being painstakingly restored to it's former glory thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers. The theater is regarded as one of the most magnificent in the nation - and features low admission prices ($6; $4 for seniors and kids aged 12 and under), uniformed ushers (remember those?) who actually escort you to your seat and $1 popcorn and soft drinks. New York movie fans have been patronizing the theater because its only minutes from midtown Manhattan by the Path train service. A great feature of the screenings is that they generally include displays of original movie memorabila and collectibles and movie lovers meet in the luxurious lobby before and after the show to discuss common interests. Oh, and for our latest self-serving promotion, we can say you can now get back issues of Cinema Retro on sale in the theater lobby. So join Cinema Retro in going
"Ape" this Friday night.
Well, if it turns out this place has a better print than I saw last March, I'll be kicking myself.
James, are you going to go?

.htmlThis is for Tim and anyone else who cares to try...
About the question of the elevation of the old lodge foundation site in Malibu Creek State Park.
I've just been looking at it again on Google Earth and when you use the layers on the left side, click on Terrain, then use the slide tool on the right, the elevation of everything should pop up and you can move around and get a good idea of the terrain. You can fly over the entire park and get an excellent view of where everything is, from site of the cornfield in the south of the park to Century Lake north of that. Follow the creek north from Century Lake and it bends west between two buttes. Where it bends north again is the site where the MASH set was. Follow the creek further north and you'll find Lake Malibu (actually they spell it differently, I think "Malibou" or something). This is a reservoir made in the twenties from a conjunction of two other creeks that came together to form Malibu Creek. Anyway, it filled up in the late twenties and was the site in the Boris Karloff FRANKENSTEIN where the Monster drowns "Little Maria." o now
when you see that scene you'll know that a fw decades later Ape City would be built just behind the mountains in the background.

.htmlHey Rory,
Perfect timing on this, and fantastic information! I'm planning to
visit the park in about two weeks specifically to find as many of the
filming loations as possible, especially the cage location. I've
always wondered where, exactly, it was located. I'll try to take
some good photos and post them here, if possible.
By the way, I found a book that might be of interest to the group,
and you specifically. It's called "Hollywood Escapes: The
Moviegoer's Guide to Exploring Southern California's Great Outdoors"
by Harry Medved. I purchased it on Amazon.com specifically for this
trip, and he does a pretty good job of covering the POTA filming
locations. I'm also looking forward to the map you are planning to
make of the park. Thank goodness for Google Earth!

but I've finally found it. Â In fact it was staring me right in the

to see the Malibu Creek. Â Look for Century Lake (a dam in front of
it can clearly be seen, then follow the creek downstream around
the "Goat Buttes."

location of the outdoor cage in PLANET was that I thought the buttes
behind it (and I'm talking about what you see directly behind

City (and Century Lake). Â But I've finally discovered they're not.
In fact what they are are the buttes above the Rock Pool (the hoses
either removed or turned off and hence no waterfall there).

You can see the outline of the foundation in the crane shot of the
outdoor cage, and the stone steps that Cornelius and Zira climb to
get to the cage are actually the old steps to the lodge. Â They're
still there and can be clearly seen on Google Earth.
