.htmlI've just finished reading Adami's new book and would echo Hunter's
positive review. Part diary, part biography, it paints a vivid and
sometimes moving portrait of a dedicated fan living the dream against
all odds.
The English translation is somewhat hit and miss in parts but somehow
even that helps the Author's personality shine through, making it feel
as though he's talking directly to you, the reader, in an unfamiliar
language.
If the last section doesn't have you thanking your lucky stars at how
much we take for granted you're made of sterner stuff than I! As
Hunter says, it's slim & fun but I would also add `inspiring' to the list.

.htmlWell I made it easy on myself and am going to answer your question based on the AFI Top 10 SF films. Of that list, I would have to say Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But I don't agree on that list. POTA (the original) would be my favorite with Terminator (the original) being my second pick neither making the list would should say something about my taste(in movies that is). I could not even begin to tell you an all time, across the board, favorite. There are way too many.

In the "Photos" section I made a file and started it off with 2 scans.
The first is of a MEGO hand-out that was given to customers at stores
by a guy dressed in a Cornelius suit. Wacky as it made be it's a pic
from "Battle".
The suit was very nice, and even the mask wasn't too bad. I have one
which MEGO custom made for me for my help in their POTA line. They also
had a guy dressed as General Urko that appeared in stores with a
similar B&W hand-out ...I know I have that somewhere and will scan it
as soon as I can.
The second item I posted in the folder is the first canvas painting I
did way back in 1975...ouch. It's of my favorite chimp, Zira.
Hope you guys like...

Well the AFI screwed up again and left POTA off the list of the Top 10 SF films. The list is as follows: 1 2001 2 Star Wars 3 ET 4 A Clockwork Orange 5 The Day the Earth Stood Still 6 Blade Runner 7 Alien 8 Terminator 2 9 Invasion of the Body Snatchers 10 Back to the Future

Hi all, In the "Photos" section I made a file and started it off with 2 scans.
The first is of a MEGO hand-out that was given to customers at stores by a guy dressed in a Cornelius suit. Wacky as it made be it's a pic from "Battle". The suit was very nice, and even the mask wasn't too bad. I have one which MEGO custom made for me for my help in their POTA line. They also had a guy dressed as General Urko that appeared in stores with a similar B&W hand-out ...I know I have that somewhere and will scan it as soon as I can.
The second item I posted in the folder is the first canvas painting I did way back in 1975...ouch. It's of my favorite chimp, Zira.

.htmlI agree with you 100%. I've always found that these AFI lists are disproportionately skewed to films of current actors, producers and directors. That's why so many Spielberg films are included. Why include Back to the Future and ET but not POTA? Because they are Spielberg films. In the Epics catagory, why overlook Patton and include Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List? Because they are Spielberg films. The AFI is pandering pure and simple. Spielberg is still a powerful person in Hollywood. The filmmakers of POTA, Patton and other worthy films are either retired or dead. So they suck up to Spielberg while dissing films made by people who are no longer powerful.
Just based on the AFI's own criteria of Historical Significance, Cultural Impact and Popularity over Time; POTA beats out a film like Back to the Future hands down.

.htmlJames, You put it so well. I know I've always been pissed how Speilberg always gets enormous credit for everything he does on name sake only. As with Schindler's List suddenly he get credit for touching on the holocaust. Give me a break - it was done years before, and better in War and Rememberance - better, grander, and absolutly gut wrenching. Speilberg even took a scene but altered it enough to make it "origianl' (It was the girl in a red coat we later see among the dead. In War and Rememberance it was a girl holding flowers!) I don't deny Speilberg credit or talent (I feel his two best films are Close Encounters and Jaws) but enough is enough.
I remember there was a Making of Jurassic Park released on Laserdisc which had pre-production meetings that were video taped by Speilberg. I was disgusting how someone at the meeting would bring up an idea - which Speilberg would ignore then later in the
meeting he would say the same idea as if it were his own. There was also video footage that Speilberg did of himself while driving to the studio where is talks to himself. This was not done for a planned home video release it seems he used to do this all the time. Prior to video he used to use 8mm film! On in intersting note none of this stuff was ever released onto DVD. Speilberg even had a documentary that was done on JAW (for Laserdisc) edited when first released onto DVD - the footage was about how he almost had a nervous breakdown during JAWS. The man is ego and the expess of no one. - Scott B.
James <JamesA1102@...> wrote:
I agree with you 100%. Just based on the AFI's
own criteria of Historical Significance, Cultural Impact and Popularity over Time; POTA beats out a film like Back to the Future hands down. --- In pota@yahoogroups. com, scott bosco <digitalcinema@ ...> wrote: > > Smells like AFI is kissing ass.

Found some more photos I took of my Nova costume before I sent it off:
Here is the costume all laid out:
Now that I know where the snaps are if I was Action Jackson I'd have that top off Nova like a high school boy with his prom date in the back seat lol.

Back to the Future is a good film but it is a joke to include while omitting POTA. Alien is another good film but is more of a horror than SF film. Terminator 2??? I could see if it was the first Terminator which was a ground breaking film, but the sequel? They have got to be kidding.
Yeah, it was a joke. BACK TO THE FUTURE most definitely shouldn't have been on the list, and just what makes BLADE RUNNER so good? Don't get that one at all.
