.htmlIt is totally possible that Cheeta knew Kelley. In 1967 Roy Kabat
( http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=Roy+Kabat)
supplied the animals for the movie, Dr. Doolittle. Hi daughter, Robin
Dickson has pictures of Roy with Cheeta. In 1971, Roy Kabat supplied
animals for Escape from the Planet of the Apes.
It is possible that they have crossed paths in their careers and early
lives. Bob Dunn could be a link, as well. Roy Kabat was close
friends with Bob Dunn and, according to Roy's daughter, probably
worked with Mr. Dunn's animals on both films.

Well the AFI screwed up again and left POTA off the list of the Top 10 SF films. The list is as follows: 1 2001 2 Star Wars 3 ET 4 A Clockwork Orange 5 The Day the Earth Stood Still 6 Blade Runner 7 Alien 8 Terminator 2 9 Invasion of the Body Snatchers 10 Back to the Future
Now these are all good films but some, based on the AFI's on criteria of Impact, Cultural Signifigance and Enduring Appeal, just don't belong. Back to the Future is a good film but it is a joke to include while omitting POTA. Alien is another good film but is more of a horror than SF film. Terminator 2??? I could see if it was the first Terminator which was a ground breaking film, but the sequel? They have got to be kidding. --- In pota@yahoogroups. com, Haristas@... wrote: > > CBS is showing another one of those commercial filled AFI movie list?specials tonight (Tuesday), which means I'll record it but not watch it live so I can skip to the stuff that interests me, that being if PLANET will be among the top ten SF films? > > It better be. > > -- Rory >

Especially during the day light hours, where it would either turn
them into stone or burn them to ashes like Holy Water! If you've see the film Idiocracy then you know what I'm talking about, It's just no one expected to see the signs quite so soon. But they aren't dead yet. I was only mildly considering taking any remake of Journey To The Center of the Earth -- especially after hearing become another Brandon Fraser vehicle. But now that it's in the new 3 D process, I almost have to go , no matter how bad it sucks.

BTTF did not belong in the top 10 but maybe the top 25 (it is, underneath it all, still a sci fi film).

I would eliminate Terminator 2 and put up the original. Replace Back to the Future with POTA (not necessarily in the same order as they listed either)

Well the AFI screwed up again and left POTA off the list of the Top 10 SF films. The list is as follows:
1 2001
2 Star Wars
3 ET
4 A Clockwork Orange
5 The Day the Earth Stood Still
6 Blade Runner
7 Alien
8 Terminator 2
9 Invasion of the Body Snatchers
10 Back to the Future
Now these are all good films but some, based on the AFI's on criteria of Impact, Cultural Signifigance and Enduring Appeal, just don't belong. Back to the Future is a good film but it is a joke to include while omitting POTA. Alien is another good film but is more of a horror than SF film. Terminator 2??? I could see if it was the first Terminator which was a ground breaking film, but the sequel? They have got to be kidding.

My Zira costume is 90% finished. For some
reason, when Lacey tried the costume on, it didn't fit correctly on her

If you listen to both Kim's and Paula's accounts

Kim wore a padded hump on the back of her shoulders.

It took more like three hours. I just read an interview with a makeup guy (can't recall the name now) in the latest issue of "Filmfax" who worked on the first two APES films, BATTLE and the TV series, he he tells how some of the actors would start to freak out sometimes with putting the makeup on. One time Claude Akins just jumped out of the chair and paced around the makeup trail for several minutes before he could be put back in his chair to be finished.

Bergman Regretted Turning Down 'Planet of the Apes'
27 April 2004 | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news
Revered actress Ingrid Bergman's greatest regret during her illustrious career was turning down the opportunity to appear in Planet Of The Apes. The Casablanca star was offered a part in the 1968 movie opposite Charlton Heston and, according to her actress daughter Isabella Rossellini, was keen to appear so she could "disregard her regal bearing". Rossellini tells London's Time Out newspaper, "She badly regretted turning down a part in the Planet Of The Apes franchise. I remember going to see one of those monkey movies with her and she was astounded at how well it had turned out. I know she was tired of playing roles which wouldn't allow her to discard her regal bearing. I think she realized that all those putty muzzles the ape actors would have liberated her from her image in an instant. But she hesitated, the part went to someone else, and she and Charlton Heston never again came as close to working together." <.html

I made a Planet of the Apes movie using Super-8 film back around 1976 with some college and high school friends. We never finished it; but I got out the old projector and showed the reel of film I have left (my ex never gave me the other reels) and he thought it was pretty good (other than the fact it was silent).
The costuming was the hardest part of the film. I created the plaster molds for the latex masks (chimp, orangutan and gorilla) using clay. I had full face masks for the background apes and partial face masks for the main characters. I didn't figure out how to do latex foam; so they were all latex rubber. The full face masks just had long black, brown or orange fake fur. The other apes with the appliances wore wigs I had bought from second hand stores. The hands had gloves made from nylons, with no fingers, and sewn on wig hair.
I agree that the hardest costumes to make were the gorillas uniforms because each of the horizontal ribs had to be sewn with a string for the raised line and then folded over and sewn along the edge onto the vest. This was no easy task using vinyl (I used brown fake leather). The snaps on the ammo belts were made from plaster molds and the boxes on the belt were made of black painted wood. The boots were really just vinyl cuffs worn over brown shoes. I didn't bother with the toed boots or shoes. So I was impressed by the shoes in the photographs of the costume in this thread. The gloves were made by hand too and had the same ribbing as the vests. The pants and sleeves were made from brown cloth.
The chimp and orangutan suits were not as difficult as the gorilla to make. Though I never knew about the padding in the original costumes. The "leather" collars on the chimp and orangutan suits were somewhat difficult too. Most didn't have more than the darts extending around the chimp's neck because the relief symbols were a pain to sew. Especially Dr Zais's collar.
The rifles were made from 2x4 pine studs and cut to the ape rifle shape using a jigsaw. The barrels were made from small diameter pipe.
Some day I'll have to have what film I have left transferred to digital video. It is now old and has brown spots; so I probably would need to be cleaned professionally first and some of the splices would need to be redone as some are broken.
It was a lot of fun making the movie back then though my family all thought I was way too nerdy. My brother still teases me about making "monkey movies". lol.

Yeah, I've seen that before, but there's a sad thing about it in that Heston doesn't recall that it was Edward G. Robinson in the screen test, not Maurice Evans.
The series sure would have been very different if Heston had wanted to be in every sequel, but by the time you got to the fifth film (or beyond) it would have been "Escape from the Planet of Chuck's Toupee."

Yeah, I'm truly not that excited over the upcoming POTA Blu-ray release. I mean, I'm keeping my figures crossed that the extras will be worth the wait, but in terms of seeing a transfer of the film (I'm talking the original) that will blow me away, well the current standard anamorphic DVD (though not perfect) is pretty good. I don't have a Blu-ray DVD player yet, but when I go into Best Buy or wherever and look at the displays of Blu-ray discs, though I see it's sharper and clearer than standard DVDs -- it ain't that much better! I think Blu-ray and HD in general really only makes a big difference to those with large screen projection home theatres. I'm able to watch DVDs on 50" plasma TVs, and in progressive scan they look pretty damn good. Yeah, sometimes there's annoying digital artifacts, but generally it's OK.
So, all I can say is if you're happy with standard DVDs, there's nothing wrong with that. As far as Blu-ray goes, with the economy the way it is, and threatening to get even worse, it's probably a good idea to hang onto your money. Let's see what the extras will be, but as far as the new transfers go? I thought there were problems with BENEATH in the Legacy release -- too bright and sometimes off color (the gorillas during Ursus' speech) -- and I'm hoping that thy don't do the same to PLANET. Only time will tell.

.htmlYep, that article is right. But, it goes beyond just grain. Color is being affected to. Coppola's Dracula is a prime example. Some idiot who mastered that film actually drained the color from parts of the image to make it look more like the newly photographed trash of today's more recent entries. I saw that film in the theater and have seen it, reviewed it, on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD. This most recent edition is horrible. De-saturation is probably the one "hack" style used in cinema since it's introduction to main stream cinema with the film Stigmata. Now it has become so over used newer reviewers - especially for DVD - see a film in 3 strip Technicolor and state, overly done, bright, over saturated. Don't these ass' know they see in true color?!
Movies today don't really have true cinematographers, they have photoshop techs who don't the know or understand what real lighting, and working with color is
all about. It all done later on a video monitor not during the shoot. Worst, reviews are so embedded in recent film's they don't fully understand or comprehend the work, and real talent that goes into what was done prior to the digital domain. This pertains very much to POTA, especially the first film due to the challenges the original production had to make sure the make-up was photographed the correct way - to yield the proper color, dimensions, and even cover up what it lacked. A prime example is a comparison between the first film and the TV series. Filmed at a quicker pace and to be more cost efficient the TV series reveals more that should be seen especially within the mouth of the actors. As typical with TV many the scenes are over lit. But the film's have a richer and deep texture. The careful lighting enhanced the right details, while hid flaws. That's art.
I remember when the POTA films were
done years ago for Laser and the techs had a bitch of a time especially with CONQUEST and BATTLE (yes a master was made for BATTLE - the longer version - but never used for Laser) The tech complained about the stock of film used and and how there was an excessive amount of grain. Although BATTLE shines on the past DVD release there is still a sign of this grain in scenes of CONQUEST. Dealing with is one thing, but completely changing the texture of the original is another. Even when a wonderful master is made it can be shot to hell by an over zealous person who is doing the digital writing. There are so many steps and people in the process it sometimes amazes me when a really good master come along - especially of an older title. It seems to me many of today writers of DVD need to really need to watch more films from different decades, and not just the sampling served to them in college courses. - Scott

Since I live all the way across the country from LA and Fox "didn't have the money" to fly over here to film my collection...I took some super cool pics of my stuff and sent them over to the West Coast and Gavin (that's the guy) said that they loved the pics and are going to use them in the extra feature on collectables! So finally collecting all this crap pays off....although not really "pays"....
so if I have jinxed it and they don't use them now, so be it. Gavin didn't have much info on any other extras but he did seem to think that they have dug up deleted Conquest scenes!....and that's all I know.
Of course I ain't got a Blu Ray machine either....maybe I'll rent one when the disc comes out .....
Anyway...that's my news...

black painted wood. The boots were really just vinyl cuffs worn over
brown shoes. I didn't bother with the toed boots or shoes. So I
was impressed by the shoes in the photographs of the costume in this

the vests. The pants and sleeves were made from brown cloth.
The chimp and orangutan suits were not as difficult as the

It is now old and has brown spots; so I probably would need to be cleaned

Yes. I am originally from San Jose, CA. The film was titled "Journey to the Planet of the Apes" though I don't believe I ever added the title overlay.
Shooting locations were around Half Moon Bay (Daryl P and Dan K cast as astronaut survivors of an ocean crash in Forbidden Zone swimming into shore), Scotts Valley sand pits and walls (walking across the Forbidden Zone), Castle Rock state park near Big Basin in Santa Cruz mountain range (astronauts finding vegetation and other wild humans, the Ape hunt and cave dig exterior to interior scene), Saratoga creek bed bridge tunnel near Prospect High School in Saratoga (interior of cave dig with concrete walled ruins of human city) wooded grounds near West Valley College (ape hunt), Cupertino (a large sunbaked and dry reservour used for more Forbidden Zone scenes) and concrete creek/lake bed and bridge on Westmont Ave near Westmont High School (used as part of Ape City and holding area / prison for humans) and some footage I made from photographs of the High Uintas rocky mountains around Hayden's Peak (14,000 feet) and rock canyon walls along the Green River that I had
taken the year before while in Utah. Lake Powell -- where original POTA and remake were shot -- would have been a great place to film had I had the time and money to travel to Utah for filming. If I had finished I was to have the astronauts rescued by other arriving astronauts with M-16 rifles (was filmed in that dry reservour) and return to Earth. The ending was never filmed. It would have ended the same as the original novel with them arriving centuries later due to theory of relativity (book was 600 years I believe) and being greeted by a gorilla wearing a modern police uniform. It would have been a similar ending as Tim Burton's film but without Lincoln Memorial... just the airport/spaceport location from the book.
Sadly, all that remains of the film reels are the ocean scenes at Half Moon Bay, Scotts Valley, Castle Rock and West Valley College wooded grounds. Some small pieces cut from the other scenes are short snippets I saved on a small 50' reel. The ending scene leading up to the return to earth and the encounter with Dr Zaius and astronaut where he proves his intelligence by diagramming an Icasules triangal (like he did in the book) and much of the prison yard scene and cave dig with the human doll (had great natural lighting) are nowhere to be found. This was all stored in boxes in my home before I was divorced. I think my ex-wife tossed most of everything she couldn't sell on EBay into a dumpster right before we sold the home. These films included irreplacable 8mm and Super 8mm films of my parents and siblings when we were children. They had been entrusted to me to convert to video. Also related to POTA, I had every issue of the
Planet of the Apes Marvel comic magazine, collector dolls, plastic styrene model kits and other POTA and Star Trek, Star Wars and other SciFi merchandise. She doesn't "know" what happened to all of these. What a shameful loss.
I also sold the full face masks at D & C Hobby in San Jose around that same year on commission as they were displayed on the window of the shop. I wore the costumes to some Halloween parties for a few years. I'm not sure whatever happened to the costumes, masks, plaster ape masks molds and other ape props. Daryl P later moved to Los Angeles and Dan K moved to Santa Cruz.
Why do you ask? Might I know you or perhaps you know one of the cast or crew from the film? :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Brian P To: pota@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, June 23, 2008 10:04 PM Subject: RE: [pota] costume
My brother still teases me about making "monkey movies". lol. Brian

.htmlWell, so far Blu-ray released versions with bonus materials have the same materials on standard versions. Only interactive stuff like games, maps and things of that nature are Blu only features. More than likely FOX is also preparing a standard DVD release of POTA along side the Blu one, and it will have the galleries, featurettes, and whatever else. Producing these bonus material is expensive (even thought they rape collectors for materials); and most of the time it seems bonus materials aren't even mastered in Hi-Def. My suggestion is to hold tight and wait. I have a feeling all will be able to enjoy this new release and it extras. Blu is still way to small a format to hold its own. I don't think FOX or any studio is will to leave the 94% of standrd DVD buys in the dust over a tiny 6% of Blu buyers.

Star Trek was actually coming back as a tv series.
Called Phase 2
It was only the success of Star Wars that made it
to a film rather than a series

How good is good enough is of course entirely subjective and up to the
viewer. If you have an HD TV and a Blue ray player IMHO the leap in
quality (Between Blue Ray and DVD) is astonishing! Just as big as the
