.html I finally got my hands on the contact sheet from the 1968 POTA of the deleted/shortened scenes of Taylor running (and swimming ) through Ape City. I thought I downloaded an image I had of the original a while ago in the files but can't find it...when I get this in the mail I'll re-scan it and add it again.

.htmlMore than likely FOX is also preparing a standard DVD release of POTA along side the Blu one, and it will have the galleries, featurettes, and whatever else.
I'm not so sure about that. Fox doesn't seem to be doing that with anything else they've released on Blu-ray so far. Of course, the standard DVD releases of recent Blu-ray editions of PATTON, THE SAND PEBBLES, etc., were all previously released. However, the forthcoming BATMAN - THE MOVIE is an upgrade of the standard DVD released years ago, and has new extras beside the upgraded transfer. Fox having put out the "Head" and Legacy editions of APES only three years ago, and they're still on store shelves, I doubt there will be anything but a Blu-ray edition -- which I think is now scheduled for November. Also, Fox has to promote the format. How can they do that if the release standard versions too?

Hi Jessica, apparently the neck and size of the head was wrong. I thought it was very good and bought one, as well as her Brent head. She said initially that the sales were poor and wasn't going to any further heads from the tv show. Then out of the blue she sent me those images asking my opinion on it. I said it was great and she was relieved as she had destroyed the first one. Ada said that I would be receiving the revised version for my purchase.
How are the costumes coming along, I can't wait. I saw tour astronaut suits, they look really good.

-- Rory

Minnie is the first monkey helper to be placed in California
Craig Cook broke his neck in a car accident 11 years ago and was left a paraplegic. Getting through the day was difficult until three years ago, when the Boston-based organization Monkey Helpers for the Disabled introduced him to Minnie, a companion and helper monkey who responds to voice commands, bringing Cook whatever he needs.
Minnie helps Cook finish lunch. Besides helping with food preparation, Minnie has a 30-word command vocabulary, and can turn on the computer and load CDs. Her favorite command: give me a high-five. "Isn't it cool?" says Cook proudly. As a way of saying thanks, Cook has become a spokesman for the Helping Hands foundation. <.html

costume
Yes. I am originally from San Jose, CA. The film was titled
"Journey to the Planet of the Apes" though I don't believe I ever added the
title overlay. Shooting locations were around Half Moon
Bay (Daryl P and Dan K cast as astronaut survivors of an ocean crash in
Forbidden Zone swimming into shore), Scotts Valley sand pits and walls
(walking across the Forbidden Zone), Castle Rock state park near Big Basin in
Santa Cruz mountain range (astronauts finding vegetation and other wild
humans, the Ape hunt and cave dig exterior to interior scene), Saratoga
creek bed bridge tunnel near Prospect High School in Saratoga (interior of
cave dig with concrete walled ruins of human city) wooded grounds near West
Valley College (ape hunt), Cupertino (a large sunbaked and dry reservour used
for more Forbidden Zone scenes) and concrete creek/lake bed and bridge on
Westmont Ave near Westmont High School (used as part of Ape City and holding
area / prison for humans) and some footage I made from photographs of the High
Uintas rocky mountains around Hayden's Peak (14,000 feet) and rock canyon
walls along the Green River that I had taken the year before while in
Utah. Lake Powell -- where original POTA and remake were shot -- would
have been a great place to film had I had the time and money to travel to Utah
for filming. If I had finished I was to have the astronauts rescued by
other arriving astronauts with M-16 rifles (was filmed in that dry
reservour) and return to Earth. The ending was never filmed. It
would have ended the same as the original novel with them arriving centuries
later due to theory of relativity (book was 600 years I believe) and being
greeted by a gorilla wearing a modern police uniform. It would
have been a similar ending as Tim Burton's film but without Lincoln
Memorial... just the airport/spaceport location from the book.
Sadly, all that remains of the film reels are the ocean scenes
at Half Moon Bay, Scotts Valley, Castle Rock and West Valley College wooded
grounds. Some small pieces cut from the other scenes are short snippets
I saved on a small 50' reel. The ending scene leading up to the return
to earth and the encounter with Dr Zaius and astronaut where he proves his
intelligence by diagramming an Icasules triangal (like he did in the
book) and much of the prison yard scene and cave dig with the human doll (had
great natural lighting) are nowhere to be found. This was all stored in
boxes in my home before I was divorced. I think my ex-wife tossed most
of everything she couldn't sell on EBay into a dumpster right before we sold
the home. These films included irreplacable 8mm and Super 8mm films of
my parents and siblings when we were children. They had been entrusted
to me to convert to video. Also related to POTA, I had every issue of
the Planet of the Apes Marvel comic magazine, collector dolls, plastic styrene
model kits and other POTA and Star Trek, Star Wars and other SciFi
merchandise. She doesn't "know" what happened to all of these.
What a shameful loss. I also sold the full face masks at D
& C Hobby in San Jose around that same year on commission as they
were displayed on the window of the shop. I wore the costumes to
some Halloween parties for a few years. I'm not sure whatever happened
to the costumes, masks, plaster ape masks molds and other ape
props. Daryl P later moved to Los Angeles and Dan K moved to Santa
Cruz. Why do you ask? Might I know you or
perhaps you know one of the cast or crew from the film?

Monday, June 23, 2008 10:04 PM Subject: RE: [pota] costume I
made a Planet of the Apes movie using Super-8 film back around 1976 with some
college and high school friends. We never finished it; but I got out the
old projector and showed the reel of film I have left (my ex never gave me the
other reels) and he thought it was pretty good (other than the fact it was
silent). The costuming was the hardest part of the
film. I created the plaster molds for the latex masks (chimp, orangutan
and gorilla) using clay. I had full face masks for the background apes
and partial face masks for the main characters. I didn't figure out how
to do latex foam; so they were all latex rubber. The full face masks
just had long black, brown or orange fake fur. The other apes with the
appliances wore wigs I had bought from second hand stores. The hands had
gloves made from nylons, with no fingers, and sewn on wig hair.
I agree that the hardest costumes to make were the gorillas
uniforms because each of the horizontal ribs had to be sewn with a string for
the raised line and then folded over and sewn along the edge onto the
vest. This was no easy task using vinyl (I used brown fake
leather). The snaps on the ammo belts were made from plaster molds and
the boxes on the belt were made of black painted wood. The boots were
really just vinyl cuffs worn over brown shoes. I didn't bother with the
toed boots or shoes. So I was impressed by the shoes in the photographs
of the costume in this thread. The gloves were made by hand too and had
the same ribbing as the vests. The pants and sleeves were made from
brown cloth. The chimp and orangutan suits were not as
difficult as the gorilla to make. Though I never knew about the padding
in the original costumes. The "leather" collars on the chimp and
orangutan suits were somewhat difficult too. Most didn't have more than
the darts extending around the chimp's neck because the relief symbols were a
pain to sew. Especially Dr Zais's collar. The rifles
were made from 2x4 pine studs and cut to the ape rifle shape using a
jigsaw. The barrels were made from small diameter pipe.
Some day I'll have to have what film I have left transferred to
digital video. It is now old and has brown spots; so I probably would
need to be cleaned professionally first and some of the splices would need to
be redone as some are broken. It was a lot of fun making
the movie back then though my family all thought I was way too nerdy. My
brother still teases me about making "monkey movies".

I purchased the crinkle cotton, some fabric dye (need to experiment with this one)...AND some perfectly colored fabric for Burke's vest. I know that Angelofmusic2112 sent me dyed fabric, but the colors were hard to match perfectly back and front and I didn't want any perfectionists complaining...you know how that goes...you always want to send out the best you possibly can.
I also purchased a Mego 12" wonder woman that I plan to reroot hair, and then paint her face/body and hopefully turn her into Nova. That's a future project. She is missing one foot so I have to figure out how to replace that.

But only if you invest in the TV to match, which I
agree a lot of people do but what's the point in htrowing away a perfectly good
DVD & TV player to then replace all your DVD's with Blu Ray for a better
picture. I think a lot of the companies expect people to but there just isn't
the disposable income available.

How good
is good enough is of course entirely subjective and up to the viewer. If
you have an HD TV and a Blue ray player IMHO the leap in quality (Between
Blue Ray and DVD) is astonishing! Just as big as the difference between VHS
& DVD

I LOVE the new BSG, and though the scene people are refering to didnt go
100% to POTA, it was definately a tip of the hat. And I dont think it's the
finale-because after the scene in question it says theres still more to
come.

Because they're stupid. To go out of their way and produce
something that such a small percent of people will but is not a good business
choice. Then again, seeing the choices they've made in the past flies do
go to shit.
Remember, they also were behind Divix years ago.
More than likely FOX is
also preparing a standard DVD release of POTA along side the Blu one, and
it will have the galleries, featurettes, and whatever else.
I'm not so sure about that. Fox doesn't seem to be doing
that with anything else they've released on Blu-ray so far. Of course,
the standard DVD releases of recent Blu-ray editions of PATTON, THE SAND
PEBBLES, etc., were all previously released. However, the forthcoming
BATMAN - THE MOVIE is an upgrade of the standard DVD released years ago, and
has new extras beside the upgraded transfer. Fox having put out the
"Head" and Legacy editions of APES only three years ago, and they're still
on store shelves, I doubt there will be anything but a Blu-ray edition --
which I think is now scheduled for November. Also, Fox has to promote
the format. How can they do that if the release standard versions
too? -- Rory

OK. I just ordered myself two of the Burke heads, one painted, one unpainted, and another head so that I could get a fourth one free.
The Burke/Virdon outfits are coming along, but I ran out of fabric for Virdon's shirt. The original material I found at a secondhand store was actually just the sleeve part of a girls shirt, so there was very little fabric. I am anxiously waiting for the fabric store to open their doors (they are opening their new fabric store July 11) so that I could purchase the correct material and dye it the appropriate color.

We never see the Mutants first encounter with Taylor so we don't know
how they reacted to him being able to talk. Perhaps they were
surprised by the fact but by the time Brent came along had grown used
to it.
If they were distantly observing Taylor before they made actual
contact they would have known he could talk from his one sided
conversations with Nova.
I get the impression that emotions are subdued among the mutant
society (or perhaps just don't transfer very well through the masks?)
registering surprise is a primitive accomplishment but they employ it
when they must.

.html With the APES films coming to Blu-ray DVD at the end of 2008, I was wondering how many here are now watching, or plan to buy, a 16X9 TV (LCD or Plasma) display?
I had a 38" 16X9 CRT since late 2002 (since given to my brother), but now I look mostly at a 32" LCD 16X9 flat screen, but my sister has a couple 50" Plasmas that are 1080p. I'm just not ready yet to invest in the kind of display device I'd like, but I'll probably get a Blu-ray player by the end of the year and take it over to my sister's just to watch PLANET in 1080p.
The one thing I want to say to anyone here still watching the old regular TVs is once you go 16X9 pregressive, there's no going back. Looking at old square TVs actually depresses me.

I made a Planet of the Apes movie using Super-8 film back around 1976 with some college and high school friends. We never finished it; but I got out the old projector and showed the reel of film I have left (my ex never gave me the other reels) and he thought it was pretty good (other than the fact it was silent).
The costuming was the hardest part of the film. I created the plaster molds for the latex masks (chimp, orangutan and gorilla) using clay. I had full face masks for the background apes and partial face masks for the main characters. I didn't figure out how to do latex foam; so they were all latex rubber. The full face masks just had long black, brown or orange fake fur. The other apes with the appliances wore wigs I had bought from second hand stores. The hands had gloves made from nylons, with no fingers, and sewn on wig hair.
I agree that the hardest costumes to make were the gorillas uniforms because each of the horizontal ribs had to be sewn with a string for the raised line and then folded over and sewn along the edge onto the vest. This was no easy task using vinyl (I used brown fake leather). The snaps on the ammo belts were made from plaster molds and the boxes on the belt were made of black painted wood. The boots were really just vinyl cuffs worn over brown shoes. I didn't bother with the toed boots or shoes. So I was impressed by the shoes in the photographs of the costume in this thread. The gloves were made by hand too and had the same ribbing as the vests. The pants and sleeves were made from brown cloth.
The chimp and orangutan suits were not as difficult as the gorilla to make. Though I never knew about the padding in the original costumes. The "leather" collars on the chimp and orangutan suits were somewhat difficult too. Most didn't have more than the darts extending around the chimp's neck because the relief symbols were a pain to sew. Especially Dr Zais's collar. The rifles were made from 2x4 pine studs and cut to the ape rifle shape using a jigsaw. The barrels were made from small diameter pipe. Some day I'll have to have what film I have left transferred to digital video. It is now old and has brown spots; so I probably would need to be cleaned professionally first and some of the splices would need to be redone as some are broken.
It was a lot of fun making the movie back then though my family all thought I was way too nerdy. My brother still teases me about making "monkey movies". lol. Brian

Curently have an Oppo DVD player. That mixed with a Anthem D2 Receiver which has a video processor that is pro quality (up converts to 1080P) makes standard DVDs near HD quality. Friends visiting frorm FL wanted to put it to the test while visiting so we went to a local Best Buy to get a Blu player, then to Blockbuster to rent a couple of Blu discs. We did our own test comparision and found it all very disapointing, then returned the player - the picture quality wasn't that much different from what my system is doing already. The upsampling mixed with the processor on the D2 doesn't make a compelling reason to invest in Blu until the prices come way down - and they stop farting around with big difference amongst the players in terms of features - not to mention settle on a software
version. I think a lot of people are backing off due to the software bull. No one wants to pay for a player that can't be upgraded in one way or another. Too many people were burned by the whole HD/Blu war and money is tight. Blu Ray just hasn't settled down yet to be trusted. I was a Beta person way back when, and a laserdisc fan. -- Rory

You know the first shot of Ape City in BENEATH is actually unused footage from PLANET. Now the POV of that shot, which comes just after Nova points to the city with Brent beside her, is all wrong for the direction that Brent and Nova are taking towards the city. It's on the opposite side of the city, across the river or lake or whatever. However, unless this shot of Ape City was meant as an alternative establishing shot of the city, which of course is just after Taylor is taken away in the wagon after the hunt, then I believe this shot may be a Taylor POV shot from the deleted scene of him swimming in the water and crossing the concourse in PLANET, although I've never understood why Taylor, if he wanted to escape from the apes, would head into Ape City.
Anyway, who knows?

And great as Heston was as Taylor, I'm sure that there are other actors that could have pulled it off... At times I think Eastwood could have done it... I know that Paul Newman was a name I seen thrown around, but I don't think he would have been right, not "rough" enough...

I'm with you there, Scott. Although I'm glad APES is getting renewed attention for Blu-ray, because money is tight, because the economy is bad -- and I expect it to get worse -- I'm less than thrilled with what I'll have to spend to get this upgrade. Putting aside the issues involved with simply picking a Blu-ray player and upgrading my monitor, and just sticking to the discs themselves, except for what I hope will be some nice extras, this is something I don't HAVE to have. I'm perfectly satisfied looking at what I'm looking at now. Transfers can always be better, and the anamorphic APES transfers aren't perfect, but I'm not suffering in the way I was back in the 90s with that horrible first letterboxed LD of PLANET. (What a bloody bastard of a transfer that was!) I can live happily with what I've got quite awhile longer, but knowing the way I am with this APES stuff, I'll probably buy it very soon
after it's released.
Anyway, I just read over at TheDigitalBits.com the specks for Blu-ray of THE OMEN, and except for the new audio commentary by the music guys (Nick Redman, Jeff Bond and Lem Dobbs), in which they'll discuss Jerry Goldsmith's score, I have absolutely zero desire to buy this thing. It does make me hopeful that PLANET will have an isolated score and music commentary track, but I hope all the sequels get the same thing. All the APES scores deserve it.

The one thing I want to say to anyone here still watching the old regular TVs is once you go 16X9 pregressive, there's no going back. Looking at old square TVs actually depresses me.

OK, so did anyone aside from me get the in-joke with the casting of Paul
Soles as the owner of the restaurant? And I'm NOT referring to his character
being named "Stanley" either. No IMDB cheating.

Buck Kartalian was on an episode of Batman last week as one of the
Catwoman's henchmen, and a couple of recent episodes featured another very
familiar Fox Library sound effect- the leaking air sound heard in BENEATH when
the Alpha Omega bomb hits the ground (after the gorillas pull it down) and the
propellant starts to leak.
As for the aforementioned appearance of Robert Gunner on The Green Hornet,
it was literally one of those deals where if you blinked, you'd miss him. He
played a detective and had a few lines, and I was hoping that he was going to
show up later in the episode. No such luck I'm afraid. One thing I did notice is
that he looked a lot better than he did in PLANET. I'm surprised he didn't get
more leading roles, because he had a certain look about him that was popular at
the time.
Two recently viewed episodes of Mission Hill also had POTA references. One
was a takeoff on "They go to meet their destiny" (more a reference to the Power
Records adaptation), and the other of "Take your stinking paws off me...".
Neat little show, currently running Sunday- Friday at 2AM (technically
Monday-
Saturday) on Adult Swim.

I don't. Clue me in.
BTW, I'll buy a steak dinner for whoever finds the cave/rocky area that
Brent and nova head towards in BENEATH. Based on this photo:
it's in the park and not an elaborate mockup. BTW, if the link doesn't
work, go to eBay and search item number: 130193071050.
I'm also drawing a blank right now- what's the "rock pool"? The place where
they go swimming at the beginning?

I remember catching the scene where the Mutants were unmasking and-
somehow- associating the movie with the few clips I had seen of CBS' broadcast
of PLANET. That's what got me started on the whole thing.
>>The trailer wouldn't load. But you're right, part of the trailer is
on the "Behind' documentary which is was made me so made - if FOX had it and
pulled it for use in that why didn't they use it for the release of the either
all the films, or just on the BENEATH disc? <<
>>Yes, it now worked - THANKS. That is the teaser I was talking
about which was used in parts on one air of the 4:30 movie. You're also right,
it is the same that is in BEHIND - but why wasn't it included as a bonus
trailer?! I hope they open the vaults and really do the next release proper.
<<
What you're referring to is actually one of the TV spots. In addition to
BEHIND, it was also included on the 1998 Widescreen VHS Box Set release.
Incorrectly credited as the theatrical trailer, I might add.

>>Have just watched Escape on Channel 5 in UK. It's still a great
film but Cornelius's death was definatley cut to a blink or youll miss it shot.
Yet they kept his fall from the top deck? <<
It seems that some strange edits are made to Apes film in the UK. From the
IMDB:
>>A heavily edited version of the film was shown on British
television c.1991 which excised most of the violent and horrific scenes, most
notably from the last third of the film, including both scenes where Brent is
forced to attack Nova, the revelation of the underground humans true appearance,
the fight Brent & Taylor are forced to have in the prison cell, the killing
of the mutant guard on a spiked door, and much of the shoot-out at the film's
climax. This was identical to the original BBFC-cut cinema version.
<<
Anyone remember viewing this version either on TV or at the theaters? I'm
kind of surprised that it was censored for it's theatrical run.
>>I watched it too---and spotted something for the first time ,
despite watching Escape a gazillion times.I'm sure everybody else has
already spotted this, but it was a new angle for me.When Armando's circus is
being searched, he refers to the baby chimp as 'he', and, so, he is
aware of Zira's switching of the babies. That I had spotted before. But
what had eluded me until yesterday was that when Zira and Cornelius are
on the tanker and the baby is hungry, Zira ALSO refers to 'he', not 'she',
and Cornelius doesn't query it.So, Cornelius clearly DOESN'T know about the
switch, it's purely a Zira strategy.Which is even more poignant,I think.
<<
But she had a boy, so why **wouldn't** Zira refer to the baby as a
'he'?
As for what Armando said, I'd almost guess that it was a mistake in the
script. He was pushing the 'first chimpanzee ever born in a Circus'
thing with the police, and since the birth was registered (something he
referred to in CONQUEST), I can't imagine that he'd make a potentially
implicating mistake like that.
>>I always assumed that Armando realized the switch after C&Z
left when he noticed the St. Francis medal on the baby chimp. <<
John (again):
>>I also think Armando was close enough to his chimps to recognise
them individually and that Zira knew that--so there was no point in
removing the medallion. It' s really the fact that Cornelius didn't
know that resonated with me--did Zira worry he's disapprove? <<
>>Salome was wearing the medallion as well when thrown into the
water. <<
There's definitely a filming goof somewhere. If Salome had the medallion
when she was thrown into the water, how could Milo have it on at the end of the
film?
Just to be sure (it's been a while since I've watched ESCAPE), do we see
the medallion on Milo at the end? Also, is he seen at all (with or without the
medallion) after Cornelius and Zira leave?
