As for the aforementioned appearance of Robert Gunner on The Green Hornet, it was literally one of those deals where if you blinked, you'd miss him. He played a detective and had a few lines, and I was hoping that he was going to show up later in the episode. No such luck I'm afraid. One thing I did notice is that he looked a lot better than he did in PLANET. I'm surprised he didn't get more leading roles, because he had a certain look about him that was popular at the time.
Gunner is in OUR MAN FLINT as a Sean Connery lookalike, Agent 0008.

.htmlWhat's even odder is the fact that the Mutants actually use that
primitive form of communication ("talking") to speak to each other a
couple times in the film... I know the real reason for this is so the
audience knows what they're saying without having to use subtitles, but
story-wise it's is weird that they're speaking rather than
communicating telepathically when discussing the "Public thought
projection on an adult and infant level. Adults to the Cathedral,
infants indoors." etc... They're not praying, they're not singing to
their God, they're just conversing, and it's not something they "must"
use it for...
Someone wasn't paying attention to their continuity while filming...
One thing that bothers me more than the talking Mutants is just before
the Grand Army of Apes breaks in the Cathedral door they show a clip of
the robe wearing Mendez that was from the above mentioned scene, and
then suddenly when the army breaks the door in, there he is without his
robe... I know the reality is because the clip in his robe was an
edited bit from the above mentioned discussion among the five leaders,
but in the end it made for some bad scene continuity...

.htmlRory, After reading your post (below) I too just read what the OMEN collection on Blu will have and it's typical of FOX not going all out, yet again. If that info is correct where why is there only (1) one trailer for the first film? I know of 3, and what about the TV spots, radio spots. THE OMEN had some very good ones, some very different from each other. I have about 5 different audio recordings of TV spots on cassette (remember back in 76' we didn't have VCRs). I also have a radio spot. DAMIEN: OMEN II may have had only one trailer (that I know of) but it had several TV spots that I remember very will (one was animated using the black bird's blinking eye timed to Jerry Goldsmith's music used in the first film when the nanny is taken over by the dog)
Also, I wonder if they are used the 5.1 mix used for the previous DVD release - it's awful. THE OMEN was originally a MONO film. FOX
never went back to and did a real re-mix using the original sound stems. In fact, the music sounds flat compared to the original MONO. Meanwhile, DAMIEN: OMEN II was originally a 4-track stereo release that was never theatrically released that way. Last minute FOX decided to save money and did a MONO release - there weren't many theaters back then capable of showing a stereo film. The 4-track mix was done for premiers and special showcase presentations. What many don't know is that that mix was thought lost years ago (like the original 4-track mix of POTA). The "stereo" mix for DAMIEN on DVD is fake, and sounds it. Sound effects aren't matched up with on screen action some come from the wrong side of the picture. Probably the best 5.1 re-mix that FOX every put any effort in was for ROCKY HORROR which was originally a MONO mix.
It's bothers me that FOX put minimal effort into their library releases,
and gets away with it due to lack of knowledge especially from the reviewers. THE DIGITAL BITS is a master of shoving their nose where the sun don't shine, then blowing the crap out. Some, not all, of their reviewers know very little of what they are writing especially the past history of a given film in home video. No studio is perfect, but FOX holds the record for screwing more releases than others. They have soooo much in their vaults and seem to like holding it back ...just for that next release. It's sad. Haristas@... wrote:
I'm with you there, Scott. Although I'm glad APES is getting renewed attention for Blu-ray, because money is tight, because the economy is bad -- and I expect it to get worse -- I'm less than thrilled with what I'll have to spend to get this upgrade. Putting aside the issues involved with simply picking a Blu-ray player and upgrading my monitor, and just sticking to the discs themselves, except for what I hope will be some nice extras, this is something I don't HAVE to have. I'm perfectly satisfied looking at what I'm looking at now. Transfers can always be better, and the anamorphic APES transfers aren't perfect, but I'm not suffering in the way I was back in the 90s with that horrible first letterboxed LD of PLANET. (What a bloody bastard of a transfer that was!) I can live happily with what I've got quite awhile longer, but knowing the way I am with this APES stuff, I'll
probably buy it very soon after it's released.
Anyway, I just read over at TheDigitalBits. com the specks for Blu-ray of THE OMEN, and except for the new audio commentary by the music guys (Nick Redman, Jeff Bond and Lem Dobbs), in which they'll discuss Jerry Goldsmith's score, I have absolutely zero desire to buy this thing. It does make me hopeful that PLANET will have an isolated score and music commentary track, but I hope all the sequels get the same thing. All the APES scores deserve it.

52" Sony Bravia 1080p LCD here - just got it in Nov. However got my first first 16.9 set in 2000 - at the time is was Philips 32" tube Curently have an Oppo DVD player. That mixed with a Anthem D2 Receiver which has a video processor that is pro quality (up converts to 1080P) makes standard DVDs near HD quality. Friends visiting frorm FL wanted to put it to the test while visiting so we went to a local Best Buy to get a Blu player, then to Blockbuster to rent a couple of Blu discs. We did our own test comparision and found it all very disapointing, then returned the player - the picture quality wasn't that much different from what my system is doing already. The upsampling mixed with the processor on the D2 doesn't make a compelling reason to invest in Blu until the prices come way down - and they stop farting around with big difference amongst the players in terms of features - not to mention settle on a
software version. I think a lot of people are backing off due to the software bull. No one wants to pay for a player that can't be upgraded in one way or another. Too many people were burned by the whole HD/Blu war and money is tight. Blu Ray just hasn't settled down yet to be trusted. I was a Beta person way back when, and a laserdisc fan. Laserdisc had a wider consumer bass then, than Blu does now. That's reason enough for me to wait a bit longer to see which way the wind is blowing. -Scott B.

I had a 38" 16X9 CRT since late 2002 (since given to my brother), but now I look mostly at a 32" LCD
16X9 flat screen, but my sister has a couple 50" Plasmas that are 1080p. I'm just not ready yet to invest in the kind of display device I'd like, but I'll probably get a Blu-ray player by the end of the year and take it over to my sister's just to watch PLANET in 1080p. The one thing I want to say to anyone here still watching the old regular TVs is once you go 16X9 pregressive, there's no going back. Looking at old square TVs actually depresses me. -- Rory

I neglected to mention that I didn't recognize him at all, and didn't make
the connection until seeing his name in the end credits. Heston's story about
not recognizing Kim Hunter without her makeup came to mind, and I'm sure quite a
few ape actors had those "Oh, I didn't recognize you without your makeup"

Yeah, I know. This Blu-ray OMEN release is nothing but a rush job and it doesn't bode well for POTA. I know they'll be featurettes for each of the films, but so what? Five to ten minutes surface crap with a lot of talking heads that aren't going to be telling us anything we don't already know. As for remastered high definition transfers? I'll believe it when I see it. Otherwise, I suspect just an "upconversion" of the previous transfers. Oh, PLANET may receive a further restoration, but the sudden inclusion of the sequels smacks of rush job to me. Anyway, as I've said before, I'm just hoping for a music commentary track and Goldsmith's score isolated and remixed for a better 5.1 mix than before, but I'm not holding my breath. And I just remember, I will be pissed if we don't get radio spots for the films this time and those radio interviews mentioned in the PLANET
pressbook. And we also better get decent galleries this time.
Anyway, I'm starting a list here and I don't want to get into that. I'll just keep my fingers crossed and wait.

That's what gets me the total bull we as consumer get from cheap companies with execs who just don't give a damn.
I can only hope we really do get all that fans have been waiting for, for years. Enough is enough. Why should we have to pay over and over again to create a constant money flow into a film company who can know they can rely on the classics like POTA because they continue to product new trash (like the remake). ...which they know won't survive multiple home video releases like the older, classic
films. If FOX can piece together ALIEN 3 I don't see why they can't do the same for CONQUEST. Put a disclaimer up about possibility of less then good elements, but do it! The film isn't that long that 2 versions via branching can't fit on a standard DVD let along Blu. - Scott B.

I know the real reason for this is so the audience knows what they're saying without having to use subtitles, but story-wise it's is weird that they're speaking rather than communicating telepathically when discussing the "Public thought projection on an adult and infant level. Adults to the Cathedral, infants indoors." etc... They're not praying, they're not singing to
their God, they're just conversing, and it's not something they "must" use it for...
Someone wasn't paying attention to their continuity while filming... One thing that bothers me more than the talking Mutants is just before the Grand Army of Apes breaks in the Cathedral door they show a clip of the robe wearing Mendez that was from the above mentioned scene, and then suddenly when the army breaks the door in, there he is without his robe... I know the reality is because the clip in his robe was an edited bit from the above mentioned discussion among the five leaders, but in the end it made for some bad scene continuity.. .

Thanks for the link, Rory! An interesting review (and it sounds like
there's no real reason to get the Blu-Ray version).

Unless I am mistaken, when Caesar goes into Ape Management some of the
training sequences (the club, flamethrower) were all cut out!! Am I
right or wrong? It's such a short movie, why bother? If the bomb

when they ran them all weekend in letterbox, uncut, and Kim Hunter was

Nope! I just bought the other Burton, Zanuck & Carter effort,
Sweeney Todd. Thank God, & Sondheim, they didn't screw it up this
time. I had always thought of Sondheim as a bit of a hack -- good company
for Burton & Zanuck -- but he did the honorable thing and took a razor to
his own score and made some deep cuts -- to the bone in some cases -- and
the movie is the better for it.
I used to laugh at his attempt at his Gang version of Romeo &
Juliet. It was hokey at best! There's still of lot of blade wielding
in this, but there's nothing hokey jokey about it. And who know Depp was more
than just a guitarist? The guy can actually sing! And not only keeps
up but beats all previous Sweeneys, including George Hearn & Sir Ben
Kingsley at their own game. The harmony weaving in "My Friends" and
"Pretty Women" are beyond amazing, and his performance of Epiphany is a show
stopper! Do yourself a favor. Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars.<.html <.html

I have not received the Burke heads I ordered. I paid for one painted and one unpainted. I have heard that her painting is hit or miss.

Hi Jessica, I received my Brent and Burke head today. The Brent head is Fantastic and spot on for scale. The Burke head is from her early sculpt, the likeness is great but the scale is off. It is slightly too small for a 12'' body. I am going to contact her as she addressed this issue quite early on and re-sculpted the head and then revised the hair. I can't wait to see the outfits. Her painting does look a bit suspect.

I saw Dethklok last Tuesday in
Worcester. Brendon Small does vocals &guitar, plus there's a second
guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer on stage along with a giant video
screen that shows things the entire show. The stage is lit in a
very subdued manner, so it really puts the focus on the music and not
the people performing. Kind of takes the whole 'ego' thing out of the picture,
so to speak. It's a short set (55 minutes), but it was paced out pretty
well. Lots of in-jokes, but I can't imagine anyone would miss them since if
they're going to the concert then they're obviously fans of the show to begin
with.
Squidbillies is as wonderfully subversive as ATHF was in the beginning, but
its' definitely one of those love it or hate it shows (much like the previously
discussed 12 Oz. Mouse). Ventures Brothers is probably the smartest show on
Adult Swim right now. Doc Hammer, Jackson Publick, James Urbanik, and Michael
Sinterniklaas did a Venture Brothers panel at the NY Comic Con this year,
and- aside from the audience Q&A- showed a five minute preview of the
(then) upcoming third season. I enjoyed it, but the 90 minute wait in
line definitely sucked.
I'm curious to hear what you thought of the concert.
Chris L.
>>Venture Bros. is about the hippest series on Adult Swim. Though
both Metalocalypse and Squidbillies have moments. They even referenced The
Damned in one episode. Also mentioned last week on The Craig Ferguson Show.
That's more press than when they were together touring. They seldom tour
outside the UK these days. Of the Big 3 The Pistols & The Clash got the
lion's share of publicity. However, musically, The Damned could blow them
away. I'll be seeing Dethklock this weekend. It will interesting to see
how Brandon Smalls pulls it off. From what I understand he has bass and drums
backing him up while they show videos on a screen behind the
stage.<<<.html

Just because we saw him at mid-life without glyphs on his tunic in "Battle for the Planet
of the Apes," that doesn't mean that Caesar would not have ever had glyphs. After all, by
the end of his lifetime, wouldn't it be logical to conclude that Caesar may have been
accorded some post-humus honorific titles that may have been translated into glyphs for
his statue if not for his actual tunic while he was alive?
For all we know, when he was still alive, Caesar might very well have been the first
glyphee (although I would imagine that he would have been more magnanimous and
insisted that Virgil receive that honor first).
What would have been a richer irony would have been if the apes' glyph system had
originated as a pictogramic form of writing taught to the more intelligent servant apes in
their prehistory (the time envisioned by "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes"). After all, in
reali life, researchers have actually taught apes how to communicate via pictogramic
writing. <.html

.html i visited planet hollywood in manhattan last weekend, because i heard
they finally got some original ape costumes. What a disappointment,i
can believe how inept a place called panet hollywood is.Does not one
employee have any idea how to dress and arrange the costumes
correctly.
First let me state,if you have visited the mgm, disney back lot tour
you would of seen the gorilla in the villians display at end of
tour.I call him bubba gorilla ,since hes misiing a bunch of front
teeth, hes been orlando for the past 4 years at least. When he was in
orlando he had a helmet on to represent gen urko i guess. In the
planet hollywood store there they had cornelius ,descibed as Zyra
spelled that way?who is that?
back to manhattan it appears its the same pieces, apparantly bubba
urko has visited las vegas also .When i was there,i missed him
apparantly he was getting more teeth knocked out and helmet hocked
for gambling debts. Now in manhattan hes practically tooth less
missing helemet, but as how professional planet hollywood is they left
it as is.Back of head looks weird half done, bando on wrong and
backwards,i guess looking at pix 2 inches next to it which is 6 feet
tall was to much for the genuis. But worse crime is the outfit has a
pair of original gloves which are incredible rare, which has been
falling apart and getting worse everytime i see it,makes me want to
break the poor guy out.
As to chimp and orang, the heads look like sweaty crack heads, but
the best part is the legs hard to descibe, just awful.I think planet
hollywood has no shame, but they got the stupid sly ,demoltion man tub
right i guess thats what is important.
I will attach pix this weekend. goapebilly <.html

.htmlHow good a film looks really depends on the original film elements, and what kind of film stock was used. I heard that CASABLANCA looked incredible on HD-DVD but there have
been complaints about some newer films (from the 60's and 70's. Film itself has a lot of detail that can be exploited in HD but it's a reality that it will also bring out many flaws that are just part of the original elements. I would expect BENEATH, ESCAPE and BATTLE to look very good on Blu - going by how the newer standard def edition look that are currently available. I even would bet that from BENEATH to BATTLE those standard def releases are actually from Hi-def transfers. The studios have been making Hi-Def transfers now for over 5 years - for use on cable if nothing else. Supposedly Blu has certain "standards" that require even newer masters to made. I question that due to the Blu release of STARGATE which isn't new at
all but the old one with terrible desert scenes tinted (which were never previously in either the theatrical run, or on Laserdisc). The black on this masters are terrible yielding a green under tone and LOTS of grain. It looks like some idiot telecine tech shot the gamma levels to hell exposing aspects of the film that a correctly contrast balanced level would hide. The main issue here is that PLANET needs a new master and a restoration of the original film elements for archive reasons. The past masters was a digital restoration which means it was tinkered digitally while the original film elements continue to rot. Lets hope FOX is doing just that to procure the the film's future - or cut their nose off to spite the consumer. With all that's been posted here by various members I hope someone at FOX is reading and instead of taking offense realizing we all want the best for the film - and that would reflect on
them in the end. Scott B.

Blame it on 9/11.
When that happened nearly every TV viewer turned to the news channels. In order to stay afloat AMC had to start showing commercials.
Ironically, I believe I've read that AMC's rating are better now than they ever were in the days of no commercial interruptions and letterboxed broadcasts, but the demographic for the channel is the over fifty. Just watch the commercials.

reali life, researchers have actually taught apes how to communicate via pictogramic

The screen captures from Blu-ray on that site are only in 720p. If you look at Blu-ray properly displayed the imager is noticeably sharper and hasn't the -- I forget the terms, but it's when the monitor hasn't the resolution to get the fine details and instead shows jagged edges -- that's still sometimes evident on standard DVDs.

High Definition video is now set at 1080 lines, but I've read that the Japanese have already developed a system that 3000 lines, but that it won't be marketable until 2020 or something, and that you really can't notice the difference that much because there are resolution limits to the human eye!

Jeff B
The older movies will look like the age of the film stock they were shot on, and that often means lots of apparent grain, something that's causing a stir in the industry because there's computer technology that can hide grain, but it also destroys textures on the surfaces of things, such as seeing every pore on a persons face.

And I just remember, I will be pissed if we don't get radio spots for
the films this time and those radio interviews mentioned in the PLANET pressbook. And we also better get decent galleries this time.
Anyway, I'm starting a list here and I don't want to get into that. I'll just keep my fingers crossed and wait.

Um, my birthday just recently passed (June 22) ...and uh, gee. Well. Never mind.
Scott B.
I guess we share the same birth date -- of the month anyway (June 22).

.htmlIt says they evacuated the park which sounds like they didn't want to take chances that it might go there....I think it was on the road leading to the park.... Yeah, the Las Virgenes Canyon Road runs along the east side of the park, but I don't know how large twenty acres would be and if that extends from the west side of the road into the park.
By the way, I was watching HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY (1940) the other day and finally recognized the area that the cornfield would be (in 1967) in the background of a shot that had thirteen year old Roddy McDowall in. I'm sure he must have thought back on HOW GREEN when he was making APES thirty years later.

.htmlThe main issue here is that PLANET needs a new master and a restoration of the original film elements for archive reasons. I do believe an archival restoration of PLANET was done three or four years ago. (Anyone else here remember the posts about when it was a work-in-progress and shown at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY?) Hopefully that's what we'll be getting on Blu-ray.
