I got an email from a website (semi popular) that gave away the ending of this season's Dr Who. Not a word saying "spoiler" or anything. Talk about spoiling the ending.

I hope you get to post your pictures.  I tried and had no luck.  I agree that the apes looked a mess.  The legs looked distorted as do the feet.  The missing teeth was just terrible (even though I had a good laugh when I saw it).  Not worth a trip into Manhattan!   They probably did not know how rare and valuable the gloves are or they would sell them for sure before they got all torn apart.

I don't think he was around at that point. Neither was DPC character for that matter. I seem to recall in one
of the adaptations that the "Do you know the range of their city" scene happens much later in the story- which would explain his absence. I wonder if that's how it was originally filmed, and then it was broken down into two sections later. The first starting we "We've no defense" and end with "Adults to the Cathedral, children indoors" to set up the advancing ape army and the other with "What will you do, Holiness?" showing that the city was about to be invaded.

>>And did you see that look Mendez gave Brent after he said,
"Empty
the streets...they are to find the City of the Dead"? <<

Later on in his career, Paul Richards had an icy coldness about him and I think that served the character well. And while we're on the subject of that line, did Mendez tell everyone to hide so it would seem like a dead city when the gorillas arrived, or did he tell everyone to commit suicide? Albina drinking the poison at the end would seem to indicate the latter, but there were a lot of mutants around when the gorillas first arrived.

So far, Race Bannon, Johnny, Hadji, and Dr. Zin have appeared in the show. Race was still an agent, Johnny became a herion addict, Hadji was managing a tech support unit, and Dr. Zin was still Dr. Zin. No mention of Benton Quest, but it was implied last week (in the ep where Dr. Zin appeared) that's he's dead.

The reason for Dr. "Mrs. the Monarch" Girlfriend's voice has been speculated upon, but I doubt we'll find out the real reason for it anytime soon.

Your reference to Hunter's Legacy lost me. Are you talking about the episode a couple weeks back where you see Brock and Hunter in OSI?

At that point in the film, Zira couldn't have been thinking about switching because they were still supposed to stay with Armando until he left for Florida.

I'm surprised he didn't get more leading roles, because he had a certain look about him that was popular at the time. <<<.html

This has been discussed before, and you can only chalk it up to human error. All in all, it was a pretty clever edit- having Mendez look in a certain direction and then editing in an image of the bomb (which is in the same direction Mendez was looking). It shows what a film craftsman Ted Post is.

One thing that bothers me more than the talking Mutants is just before
the Grand Army of Apes breaks in the Cathedral door they show a clip of
the robe wearing Mendez that was from the above mentioned scene, and
then suddenly when the army breaks the door in, there he is without his
robe... I know the reality is because the clip in his robe was an
edited bit from the... discussion among the five leaders,
but in the end it made for some bad scene continuity.. . <<<.html

    >>And did you see that look Mendez gave Brent after he said, "Empty
the streets...they are to find the City of the Dead"?

Anyway, I'm starting a list here and I don't want to get into that.  I'll just keep my fingers crossed and wait.

The point of my answer was that scene may have been filmed and it would explain the strange "looks" between Brent and Mendez in that scene.  Also, Brent could have just thought that answer from the implanted qestion and his mind could have been read.  The mutants might not be able to read secondaryl thoughts, but would be able to pick up free one - which is why they would know the truth when it is heard, by comparison.

Subject: Location report - Malibu Creek State Park
    .html
I just returned from a trip to California, specifically to visit as
many Planet of the Apes fiming locations as possible, and I thought
I would pass along some of my observations.

    Malibu Creek State Park

The cornfield was definitely filmed in the big meadow in the
southeast part of the park. There is a gravel road that ends at
what is now the Group Campground (I believe that this road is also
where they filmed the scene when Cornelius meets Zira and Lucius
with the wagon). There is a stand of oak trees at the Group
Campground area, this appears to be where the wagons were parked and
the ape photographer was set up after the hunt. I took along some
reference photos and found somthing interesting, if you look at the
British lobby card with the two gorilla hunters carrying Taylor to
the wagons after the hunt (this lobby card can be found on Hunter
Goatley's website - top right corner of the U.K. lobby cards) right
above Taylor's bound hands you can see an object on the hills at the
far end of the cornfield (the "How Green Was My Valley" hills).
That is a fairly large water storage tank, and it is still there
now. I was curious if you could see this water tank in the movie, I
re-watched the hunt scene last night and they were careful to never
show the right side of the hill where the tank is located.

The rock pool was next - looks just like the movie to me. They were
actually filming the day I was there, a group of 20-year olds
dressed as 70's hippies (tie-dyed shirts and macrame' bikinis), no
    idea what they were filming.

I then climbed to the large flat area at the top of the "Planet of
the Apes Wall". I have no doubt that this is the cage area, as Rory
has stated. The large rock at the top of the wall was where the Ape
building was located. The set of steps from this rock up to the
flat area, and a smaller set of the side where Dr. Zaius walked up
are still there. When Cornelius enters this scene in the movie, I
always thought the water below him was Century Lake, but it was
actually Malibu Creek, the Visitors Center and the bridge over
Malibu Creek are just downstream from this point. Without the trees
you could probably see the Rock Pool from this vantage point.

The site of Ape City is probably the most changed, you cannot even
see Century Lake from here now, the vegetation around the Lake is
very thick now. However, as Jeff Krueger stated long ago, there
are still hundreds of pieces of broken concrete scattered in the
brush (I assume from the Amphitheater), so I did get my own piece of
Ape City. You can walk further down and cross Malibu Creek and walk
on the far side of Century Lake under the large evergreen fir trees
and get a better view of the lake. This trail is called the Forest
    Trail.

I was also curious about something else that Rory brought up. Where
did they film the scene where Taylor was shot during the hunt? The
only place I saw that fit was along the Crags Road where it
parallels the Las Virgenes Creek between the Malibu Creek
crossing and the Trailhead (below the How Green Was My Valley
hills). The road here is about 20 to 30 feet higher than the
creek with several pools along the creek large enough to have fit
    the movie.

I would have to say that visiting the park did not detract from the
movie experience at all to me. The distances involved and the size
of the hills and the Goat Buttes where just what I would have
expected, especially on a sunny June day just like 41 years ago! I
definitely plan to visit again in the future.

    Point Dume

From the cliffs above and from the beach, it appears that little has
changed, other than the cliffs are used as nesting sites by seagulls
and pelicans, so some of the cliffs have been stained white with
their droppings. If you go, note that there is very limited parking
at the top, with No Parking signs everywhere else.

    Red Rock Canyon State Park

If you want to see where the Ape Army marched in Beneath, just take
the Hagen Canyon loop hike (about a mile) and you should recognize
    most of the scenery.

I think you may be right, Chris, on both accounts.  I also believe that Mendez possibly told everyone to hide.

      >>And did you see that look Mendez gave Brent after he said, "Empty
the streets...they are to find the City of the Dead"?

That is true, M.C.  Brent was not advanced enough.  As I recall from the novel, it was Albina that "asked" Brent to please remove his mask.

*** It's been quite awhile since I read the novel, but if I remember right, Brent actually speaks that line, he doesn't "think" it... Though the Mutants are advanced enough to "speak" telepathically to Brent, Brent isn't advanced enough to answer them in the same fashion... If so, then they would have never had to speak to him at all and everything could have been "thought" between Brent and the Mutants... ***

In the novel Mendez gives Brent an annoyed look in that scene because he telepathically tells Brent to "take off his mask".  Brent thinks back to Mendez that he's not wearing one - which explains Mendez's miffed look and Mendez's curtness with the "city of the dead" line.

I'm sorry I meant that is was a dramatic device. Just as in those old war movies the Germans weren't really supposed to be speaking english. They are just shown to be speaking english for the sake of the audience. One of the Star Trek movies did this too. Kirk is put on trial by the Klingons and the Klingon prosecutor begins speaking Klingon but then switches over to english. Kirk is shown still holding the translator to his ear which suggests that the prosecutor is still speaking in Klingon but the audience is hearing it in english. The same could be true of the mutants. They are really communicating telepathically but they they are shown speaking for the audiences sake.

          Rob,

When you receive the outfits, check out Virdon's funky pants pocket.  That's a swatch of fabric that I will be using for my future Zira costume that I will be sewing for myself.  I am in contact with Brian from Apemania, and my lifelong dream is almost a reality...I will in a few months' time be the proud owner (and be happy to get in the goo) of Zira's appliances.

Hi Jessica, I received my Brent and Burke head today. The Brent head is Fantastic and spot on for scale. The Burke head is from her early sculpt, the likeness is great but the scale is off. It is slightly too small for a 12'' body. I am going to contact her as she addressed this issue quite early on and re-sculpted the head and then revised the hair. I can't wait to see the outfits. Her painting does look a bit suspect.

The Virdon/Burke outfits I am going to try to finish this weekend, so hopefully I can mail them out by Monday!!  Have you purchased your figures yet?

This is what's left for Burke:  pants, shirt, vest

This is what's left for Virdon:  belt loops, shirt, belt and pack.

I have not received the Burke heads I ordered.  I paid for one painted and one unpainted.  I have heard that her painting is hit or miss.

The original material I found at a secondhand store was actually just the sleeve part of a girls shirt, so there was very little fabric. I am anxiously waiting for the fabric store to open their doors (they are opening their new fabric store July 11) so that I could purchase the correct material and dye it the appropriate color.

Farscape handled the language problem well I think....They all had translators implanted in their heads so they were hearing everyone else in their own language. Since Crichton was our way in to this universe we heard his English. One episode when they went to Earth, all the implants were taken out and no one could understand each other!

2oth Century Fox Ranch became Malibu Creek State Park after Fox sold it...
I know none of the film buildings are still there....I can only guess there aren't any TV show Ape houses out in the hills somewhere..I'm sure they disintegrated over the years or were just struck after the show was canceled. Some say there are tiny bits of the buildings left around the area but who knows for sure??

            Dear Jessica and Rob,

I am close to picking up my Chimp costume and have just recieved my new appliance. I will post pictures and if you like the costume maybe I can convince the costumer to make another one?  We should all get together at some point and invade a convention enmass!

Another Idea is for a hall of members in full make-up and costume for the site. Maybe this could kick start the Wiki site. We could up load our stories and thoughts onto youtube ( I have an idea to start a channel dedicated to POTA) in full make-up.

Anyway getting a bit carried away.....

            John

I purchased a Deluxe male chimp appliance from Brian about two years ago. They are excellent quality, second only to the originals. I have thre of those, cost me a fortune and too dlicate to do much with apart from look at. I would love my own Cornelius outfit, one day maybe. I can't wait to check out the funky pocket.

            Jessica.

            Rob,

The Virdon/Burke outfits I am going to try to finish this weekend, so hopefully I can mail them out by Monday!!  Have you purchased your figures yet?

This is what's left for Burke:  pants, shirt, vest

This is what's left for Virdon:  belt loops, shirt, belt and pack.

I have not received the Burke heads I ordered.  I paid for one painted and one unpainted.  I have heard that her painting is hit or miss.

            Jessica.

The original material I found at a secondhand store was actually just the sleeve part of a girls shirt, so there was very little fabric. I am anxiously waiting for the fabric store to open their doors (they are opening their new fabric store July 11) so that I could purchase the correct material and dye it the appropriate color.

Exactly! It's just a dramatic device for the sake of the audience.

The original material I found at a secondhand store was actually just the sleeve part of a girls shirt, so there was very little fabric. I am anxiously waiting for the fabric store to open their doors (they are opening their new fabric store July 11) so that I could purchase the correct material and dye it the appropriate color.

Yes...please, let's go to a convention together and plan for that!  We'll all go ape.

Last night I cut out the parts of the green coat for Zira's outfit, and I finished sewing one of the sleeves on.  The material I found hangs so very well.  Tonight I will finish the other sleeve, then the sides of the outfit, and piece together the front part of the coat.  It should not take more than half an hour for that.  Then I have to figure out how to put the fake leather.   It was funny because I don't have a pattern, so I laid out my fabric on the floor and I kept lying down and getting up to eyeball my measurements before I cut out the pieces, and my Sideshow Zira was laying down next to me for guidance.

            Jessica.

.html That is a shame that those external sets were not preserved as historic landmarks.  Perhaps they were far to damaged to begin with and posed a risk to patrons of the new park.  So there were made of concrete?  I wasn't sure if they were merely plastered over chicken wire or something like that and far more temporary in structure.  You mentioned how the site of the human cage was on top of the "Ape Wall" and that some of the steps remain.  Is there an actual Ape Wall structure still there or was that merely implied in the film?

I always dreamed of visiting those sets some day.  I believe some of the other shows that made use of Ape City was Logan's Run (not sure), OtherWorld (not sure), Buck Rogers (a second season episode.. The Guardians or The Crystals... don't remember which), Planet of the Apes TV (of course.. almost weekly), and perhaps a few other sci-fi series.

Where is Malibu Creek State Park?  I know there is a park with a creek near Vasquez Rocks (a rock outcropping used in many films and tv series as a rocky desert location including where Kirk fought the Gorn) that has been used for a filming location on occasion.  I once visited Vasquez Rocks to film my own sci-fi amature Super8mm film while a crew was filming the Buck Rogers episode "Journey to Oasis".  I got to meet the film directory (who recommended Red Rock Canyon as a great location for my Mars) and the doubles for Buck Rogers and Hawk.  Gil Gerald was not on site.  I took some photos of these actors for them and continued to write them as pen pals for a year or so after.  I also have a humorous photo of one of the "cave men" up on the rocks flipping me off.  I guess he didn't like his picture being taken.  LOL.

I think we would all like to view any photographs you may have taken while on your Planet of the Apes expedition.  Perhaps you may post them in the board's file section?

I am going to contact her as she addressed this issue quite early on and re-sculpted the head and then revised the hair. I can't wait to see the outfits. Her painting does look a bit suspect.

Yes, it is. You don't see much of the pool. Also that stoney river bed they walk on, and she sees the lizard, is in the park. Then a lot of BENEATH inspired matte paintings take over.

As I've said before -- don't think much of LOGAN'S RUN. Really a terrible movie. Goldsmith's score one of the few good things about it. I hear it's being remade. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

Cool! Great report. I hope to visit there someday myself. I envy you.

By the way, in BENEATH, as the gorilla army is marching out of Ape City, in the last shot before the film cuts back to Brent and Nova, you can see Dr. Zaius and General Ursus at the head of the army riding along the Forest Trail (far lower right corner of Panavision frame).

I've read that the increase in vegetation along Century Lake is because of the silt that has deposited in the reservoir bed and that unless it's dredged out, the "lake" will eventually be filled in. Malibu Lake, further northwest above where MASH was shot, spends over a million a year clearing out the silt.

Subject: [pota] Location report - Malibu Creek State Park

However, as Jeff Krueger stated long ago, there
are still hundreds of pieces of broken concrete scattered in the
brush (I assume from the Amphitheater) , so I did get my own piece of

I had always assumed that Ape City was contructed on the 20th Century Fox ranch (where ever that is) and it seemed to be used in some other TV shows, including the Planet of the Apes TV series, for several years. I have always wanted to visit Ape City but I figured it was no longer standing or was on private property. Do you know if any of the Ape City buildings are still standing?
Most of Ape City was torn down in 1971 after flooding cause Century Lake to rise to the level of the amphitheater and eroded the ground out from around most of the structures. They left the amphitheater there until early 1975 (it appears in the TV show) when, after Fox sold the ranch to the state to make the park, it too was bulldozed.

Pictures of the last days of Ape City can be seen at Cloudster.com -- or something -- you know, that Icarus site.

Oh I am so sorry. I just realized about a ZILLION other Ape City pix were recently downloaded, all of which were incredible. Either add mine to their files or add theirs to my folder in the FILES section. I know I'd like to see them all together and I'll bet others would, too. .

It's nowhere near Vasquez Rocks. Malibu Creek State Park is in the Santa Monica Mountains northwest of LA. Google Earth it and you can't miss it.

By the way, the wagon scene (Brent fighting the gorilla) was filmed at Vasquez Rocks. The stunt doubles shot on location. The shots with James Franciscus are rear projection in the studio.

That is a shame that those external sets were not preserved as historic landmarks.

The “Planet of the Apes Wall” is a large rock wall used for rock climbing.  I guess the climbers named it that since the cage area was located at the top of the rocks and the Rock Pool is so near.  I don’t think the wall itself was shown in POTA.

I got to meet the film directory (who recommended Red Rock Canyon as a great location for my Mars) and the doubles for Buck Rogers and Hawk.

Red Rock Canyon would be a great location for Mars.  There was actually a number of science fiction movies filmed there (at least partially) in the 50’s.  It’s probably the best known for standing in as Egypt in the original Universal movie “The Mummy” (1932).  It’s definitely one of the most photogenic desert locations I’ve seen.  (It’s also hot on a June day – 103 degrees at noon when I was there).

I think we would all like to view any photographs you may have taken while on your Planet of the Apes expedition.  Perhaps you may post them in the board's file section?

I’ll see if I can post a few in the next week or so.

As I recall they shot gunite over rebar in a cardboard
and or plywood mold. Picture sort of making a swimming
pool in reverse.  Instead of digging a hole and lining that with
rebar you build the frame above ground, cover it with plywood
and cardboard and shoot the gunite, then peel, plaster & paint.
Instant Ape Dwelling!  Nothing to it.  No wonder there's about as
much left of it as the M*A*S*H Camp.  It was only slightly more
permanent.  Just one good mudslide and they'd all be in the creek.
Still, better than some of the housing in the Hollywood Hills.  They
should have done a couple for the back lot, as museum pieces. I
wouldn't mind living in one.  I hear some of he new Eco-Houses
made out of adobe and hay bails or concrete and newspapers
are energy efficient and very durable.  But if in Cali it's better IN

That is a shame that those external sets were not preserved as historic landmarks.

The Ape city was used in the Logan's Run TV series 90 minute pilot. I just watched it.

What have you used in the past to do the basic paint job on an appliance? I have tried everything form cosmetics to stage grease paint. They all work but seem to damage the appliance a bit (not much mind) I have been told by a modelling friend of mine that acrylics are the best to use with foam rubber, what do you think?

you have to realise ,the apesites costumes etc were just seen as a money making tool for fox.and when they were done with it they were tossed to the side and discarded.until someone stumbled onto them and needed something .like most things cannibalized and used else where.what happened to most of ape city was calif wildfires  that destroyed most of set, plus fox sold of large parts of the property also and tore down remaining pieces.the company didn't care about preserving the history it didn't make money for them.look at mash set, there is a couple of rusted vechiles left just because they were to lazy to finish cleaning up .
if you look at a lot of 70s shows you will see many ape costumes in tv shows ,leather gorilla vests on star trek, jumpsuits from conquest on voyage to bottom of sea.also john carpentars movie ghosts of mars, bad guys wearing gorilla bandos.  goapebilly

The "Planet of the Apes Wall" is a large rock wall used for rock climbing.  I guess the climbers named it that since the cage area was located at the top of the rocks and the Rock Pool is so near.  I don't think the wall itself was shown in POTA.
The "Wall" is a large oblong rock that juts out from the hillside atop which the old Crag's Country Club Lodge stood in the 1920's, 30's and 40's.  The outdoor cage in PLANET was built atop the foundation for the lodge, which Fox tore down in either the late 40's or early 50's.  The small "Ape House" structure you see in PLANET when you first see Cornelius, and late the structure that Taylor, Nova and Lucius exit when they make their escape, was built against the part of the "Wall" that runs into the hillside.

In BATTLE you see the "Wall" from the other side when the apes have their council meetings.

I hope this is clear to everyone.

Subject: Great Ape Project -- Victory in Spain
              .html
Many of the members of this group have some knowledge of the Great Ape
              Project and their mission:

"The Great Ape Project seeks to end the unconscionable treatment of
our nearest living relatives by obtaining for non-human great apes the
fundamental moral and legal protections of the right to life, the
freedom from arbitrary deprivation of liberty, and protection from
              torture."

I'm a little late on this, so it may have been announced here before.
Apparently, GAP has had some success in Spain.

              June 25, 2008
"SPANISH CONGRESS ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR THE GREAT APE PROJECT AND
              GREAT APES"

Just in from our colleagues in Spain: Just hours ago, the Spanish
Parliament announced its support for the Great Ape Project's mission
to attain legal rights for non-human great apes. "This is the first
time in the History of Humanity that an important Parliament has
announced its approval of rights for Great Primates" announced Dr.
Pedro Y. Ynterian, Director of GAP Brazil and incoming GAP
International President. This is the central issue the Great Ape
Project has focused on for the last 14 years.

This is an important step towards future governmental support for
great apes worldwide. Under most government structures, legal rights
are the only way to insure that non-human great apes are free from
torture, unnecessary death and capture. Simple "animal protection"
laws are not enough. We congratulate the hard work and efforts of GAP
Spain and its members as well at the political parties that introduced
and supported the decision: The Front United Left and Catlunya Party.
              This is a tremendous accomplishment.

Next week a well-known bioethicist [and believer in intelligent
design], Wesley J. Smith, will discuss his opinions against the idea
of Animal Rights. You can check out his blog at:
              http://www.wesleyjsmith.com

I received an email from Mr. Smith which stated briefly:

"In a nutshell, I believe it is a distinctly human DUTY to treat
animals humanely, but giving rights to animals—none of which can even
comprehend the concept—destroys human exceptionalism the foundation
for universal human rights. Next week I will have a piece on this in
the Weekly Standard on Spain about to pass the Great Ape Project."

William Saletan (Slate) weighs in on the events in Spain on his blog,
              also.: http://www.wesleyjsmith.com/blog/2008/07/saletan-on-gap.html"

Personally, I have been trying to rationalize spending $$$ and
traveling 4 hours a day to take in a class at Vermont Law School with
professor Steven Wise on Animal Rights Law:
              http://www.vermontlaw.edu/elc/index.cfm?doc_id=128

This may not be interesting to others in the group, but I find the
debate to be quite fascinating. The idea is working its way to the
top of the legal "to do" list -- and it looks as if the Great Ape
Project is having some impact. I'd love to hear what you all think.
