Thought some of you might like to know about these **ahead** of time for
a change. :-)

Wednesday July 16th 8PM (EST)- Mission: Impossible "The Puppet"
(featuring Roddy McDowall). American Life TV Network. The episode repeats
at 1AM.

Wednesday July 16th 8PM (EST)- Mission: Impossible "Incarnate" (featuring
Kim Hunter). American Life TV Network. The episode repeats at 1AM.

Friday July 18th 9PM (EST)- Batman "The Spell of Tut" (featuring Victor
Buono). American Life TV Network. The episode repeats at 11PM. Part 2
airs the following Friday, same Bat Time...
(obscure trivia: The Green Hornet & Kato appear in a cameo in Part 1).

Also, on Thursday July 24th and Friday July 25th at 7PM, G4 will be
featuring two nights of live coverage (three hours per night) from the
San Diego Comic Con. Being that it's infinitely more crowded than the New
York show was AND that's I really can't just pop across the U.S. to go,
this is the next best thing to being there. After the live airings, both
programs will be repeated often throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Starting as early as two hours after the first night's coverage ends. And
if anybody is in the mood for some completely off-the-wall humor, G4 has
a show called 'Code Monkeys' that's set in the era of the Atari 2600
(although the graphics look like the first NES system). Lots of sick,
twisted fun.

The next morning I ran to get the newspaper (http://groups. yahoo.com/ group/pota/ files/BattleAd. jpg) see the ad for the film and found out there was a second feature playing with Battle, the original 'Planet of the Apes' (which I had only seen once back in 1968). WOW, two Apes of the price of one. I was in POTA heaven.
About 2 weeks later the theater did a marathon of all the films and I got to see them all yet again. But today is a very special memory for me and just wanted to share it with everyone.
I see from the ad that the same BATTLE/PLANET double feature was playing at the Wantage Theatre in Nassau county, the same theatre where I saw PLANET in 1968 and ESCAPE in 1971.  I should have been on Long Island for all the films, but I got moved to upstate New York soon after BENEATH came out (damn divorces!).

Anyway, "OH, FOR A TIME MACHINE!"

Going to the movies today just isn't the same -- it just ain't the same!

I saw it at the UA PARAMOUNT on Staten Island listed in the same ad on the left.  I also saw all 5 films during GO APE at the same theatre - on my birthday.
Ah, memories.

I was there to see 'The Poseidon Adventure' (the first time I had seen Roddy without the makeup) and asked when Battle would be opening. They told me Friday, July 13th. I spent the next few weeks counting the days until the film opened. A wait made easier by a trip to Disney World the week prior. (We got back on the 12th.) I remember going bed the night before and trying to fall asleep as fast as possible so morning would come quickly. Sort of like on Christmas Eve.

What great memories, thank you for sharing. The only time I ever saw Planet of the Apes on the big screen was for their 30th anniversary at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, CA.  Beautiful theater, too.

    Hey Goapebilly,

I have to buy guitars and stuff
instead of buy all the cool ape
props.  So could you do one
of those Virtual Tours like on
the real estate sites so I can
pretend you ape room is part
of my house?  That'd be cool.

Rich,

Where in Brooklyn did you grow up?  I was a jackson heights girl (Queens), and I remember going to The Colony to catch all my POTA films.  Escape confirmed my schoolgirl crush on Cornelius, and then a Battle and Conquest made me an even bigger Roddy McDowell fan.  Seeing him without makeup in Poseidon Adventure (one of my guilty pleasure faves since Shelley Winters dies in it) was a little disconcerting for I was so used to seeing his soulful eyes in chimp makeup, but that voice soothed me quickly.

you realize it once you see the actual layout. There was an article
in the Marvel POTA magazine about the special effects used in PLANET
and the author used this exact scene as a example of a special
effects shot! Obviously, he didn't kmow, either.

I know I would have paid money to be one of the guys standing around
watching the filming!

Meg,
I grew up in Marine Park, a few blocks from the Nostrand. Just like
James, I got to see the Planet/Battle combo, then the all day
festival. Glad I had a dad who loved going to the movies. Plus, it
gave mom a break from us. Also glad I'm just old enough to have
visited many of those great Bklyn theaters before they were gutted or
demolished.

There was another POTA reference on television last week. on
Thursday, July 10th on the Tonight Show, comedian Adam Carolla was
complaining about watching the Olympic Trials for track and field and
how boring it was to watch skinny white guys run the steeplechase. He
said to make steeplechase worth watching they should have apes on
horseback with nets chasing them like Planet of the Apes.

Everybody knows POTA.

Yeah, I liked the way Gridhouse included

the experience many people missed because
they were either too young to have gone or remember.

That's what I liked about Kim.

Yes, thanks for sharing the memories.  Those were pleasant memories, before the days of VCR's and the like.

That's really cool, thanks for sharing.  People seem to forget what it was like to wait and see a film and then only get to see it in a theatre.  No TIVO, VCRs, or bootleg copies for sale.  Thanks for the memory.

I saw Battle for the first time. A few weeks earlier, I had seen the Battle poster in the lobby of the Walker Theater under a 'Coming Soon' sign and it looked so damn cool.

The next morning I ran to get the newspaper ( http://groups. yahoo.com/ group/pota/ files/BattleAd. jpg) see the ad for the film and found out there was a second feature playing with Battle, the original 'Planet of the Apes' (which I had only seen once back in 1968). WOW, two Apes of the price of one. I was in POTA heaven.

About 2 weeks later the theater did a marathon of all the films and I got to see them all yet again. But today is a very special memory for me and just wanted to share it with everyone.

I can understand why you would think that, the way that shot was
made, you never see that you can easily walk around this indentation
in the cliff face. I visited this overlook about five years ago and
you realize it once you see the actual layout. There was an article
in the Marvel POTA magazine about the special effects used in PLANET
and the author used this exact scene as a example of a special
effects shot! Obviously, he didn't kmow, either.

I need to add a closer view of that overlook.  I'm sure there are many here who don't have the high-speed internet connection you need to make it worth your time to go on Google Earth.

I'm getting lost here. Any suggestions?

            Helen,

You haven't changed any settings, Yahoo did. They will no longer archive attached files thus anyone who has selected the "Daily Digest", "Special Notices" or "No Email" options cannot see attached files. The moderators have been doing our best is intercepting attachments and uploading them to either the Files or Photos Section or the Group Website.

            Thanks, James.

I think that what you are suggesting is that if I accept email I will
receive the photos? I try to check for "new photos" on the home page,
but if they are going in as files, I can see why I am missing them.

            Ok, Helen. Wake up.

            Doubt it's there.

If that be the case I can get hold of a UK set, think they were released in 1974.

Some how I get the feeling this is all part of an elaborate con job. The black bordered cards are the UK set.

Just watching BPOTA on AMC and Cornelius and Zira talk about Taylor's 2 "friends", both stuffed and in the Ape Museum. In POTA we only see Dodge stuffed; Landon, though lobotomized, is still very much alive. Does this mean that Zaius and the simian scientists murdered Landon as well and had him stuffed between films?

              Subject: Rosenman talks 'Beneath'
              .html
              Lifted from Film score Monthly...

When Jerry Goldsmith left BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES to score
Patton, Rosenman served as Goldsmith's replacement:

"I like his work and I like him personally and he did a good job on
the first film. He has a wonderful dramatic sense.

I felt that it wasn't as good as the first one, but at the same time
it was different and it gave a more interesting idea for music. I
liked the science fiction element of the story, the mind control and
the bomb, and that sort of thing. The first one was a better movie but
it was more of an allegory.

I see the film, and I figure out where the music goes and what it says
in terms of the drama, and then I feel that it has to be in a certain
style, because after all it's an enormous future. It's the Earth but
entirely different, and it's not simply that this is the kind of thing
that I do and I can't do anything else. I work that way because it
fits the film. It's not really abstract, because it's repeated and
develops. This is important in film scoring -- it's like a symphonic
work because it develops. If a person disappears in the first reel and
he comes back in the tenth reel then you need to develop the music to
reflect that in some way. (BPA)

I used a 65-piece orchestra without any violins. I learned a lot about
writing for violins and cellos, and did a lot of experimenting with
              the percussion section.

I use the film studios as laboratories. I try out new sounds and new
techniques, new instruments -- things I want to work on for myself."

I don't know, but I'm watching it again on AMC right now and Chuck battles magnificently for his melon.  Though I guess he didn't know that until the Trial.  So technically he was battling for his nuts, but kicking gorilla ass all over the place. All three bits of anatomy worth fighting for..  Zira would have been proud!

Speaking of Zira, I just watched an epi of Mission Impossible and McDowall was the bad guy. Jim's cover name was, coincidentally, Hunter.  McDowall over playing, as usual with as much depth as a kids pool.

Greetings, everyone. Several months ago I became friendly with an
artist known as "The Professor" who creates papercraft models and posts
them online for free download. He designed a bunch of the characters
from Star Trek that I thought were really cool. I contacted him and
suggested that he create some Planet of the Apes characters. He liked
the idea and said he would work on it. Well, he came through and
posted his creations this week on his website. All I can say is THEY
ARE FANTASTIC!!!! I have included the link to his page. If you go
there and download them, please go to the e-mail link at the bottom of
the page and drop him a note telling him what you think. He told me
that the kind words about his work make all the effort worthwhile.
Believe me, you won't be sorry to get these! Enjoy!

The Grand Illusion Cinema is the longest running independent cinema in the city, and has become a landmark of the film community. Non-profit film arts organization, the Northwest Film Forum, saved the theater from closure in 1997, remodeled it, and has presented literally hundreds of cinema classics and rarities there. A strong group of dedicated staff and volunteers, focus all attention and energy on the continued tradition of this treasured cinema.

Bruce, I believe so.  I was reading the superb Hasslein's Curve timeline and saw where Dr. Zaius indeed had him "terminated" after his lobotomy and had him stuffed.
