As the geek behind that timeline, Zach, I thank you for the kind
words. :) Now if my book version of the Hasslein Curve ever
actually hits stores.....<sigh>

Doubt it's there.
They're usually pretty good about those things,
though in the late 60s they may not have been
as eco-conscience.
If it is there -- and didn't both windows blow off? --, it's covered under forty years of silt!
They'll be dug up in two thousands years by some chimp!

over playing, as usual with as much depth as a kids pool. McDowall was one of those kind of actors that needed a good director -- which explains why he's so good in PLANET, ESCAPE and CONQUEST, but oh God! Get the hose out for him sometimes on the TV show.

I don't know, but I'm watching it again on AMC right now and
Chu
ck battles magnificently for his melon. Though I guess he didn't
know that until the Trial. So technically he was battling for his nuts,
but kicking gorilla ass all over the place. All three bits of anatomy worth
fighting for.. Zira would have been proud!
Speaking of Zira, I just watched an epi of Mission Impossible and McDowall
was the bad guy. Jim's cover name was, coincidentally, Hunter. McDowall
over playing, as usual with as much depth as a kids pool.

In order to get a better treatment...
Hey You!
Because from what I've been told, PLANET is already done.
I'll never say that I'm sure this is what we're going to get, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed: A few years ago an archival restoration was done on PLANET. Someone who posted in this group either saw a showing of it, as a "work in progress," or reported on the showing of it at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY. At that time the man in charge of film restoration at Fox, Shawn Belston, said that a couple of reels of the original negative were missing (scenes of the escape from Ape City and at the gorge)! Anyway, I assumed this restoration was being done for two reasons: in preparation for high definition video and to provide the best possible print to the Library of Congress -- since the movie made the "National Registry" list a few years ago.
Now, is this what's being shown on Monsters HD? Got me, I can't see it, but I hope that what w
e'll get on Blu-ray will be an actual film restoration of PLANET and not one that's merely from the digital realm, which is what we now have on 35th Anniversary DVD. Will the sequels hopefully get the same treatment? Got me. What did you think of the transfers in the Legacy set? Pretty good for the most part, but BENEATH looked too bright.
Keep your fingers crossed. In the meantime, with this thing supposedly coming out in either late October or November, and Fox putting a rush on the creation of the extras, I expect it's too late to write letters now. Luckily, plenty of letters have been sent in the past. I think those at Fox have a pretty good idea of what the fans expect and desire, though that doesn't mean they can or will deliver, and we can do little more now than wait and see.

I have another set that was on a website years ago of a slightly larger

A tip to first time builders: If at all possible, get some thicker paper
to print them on. It make building them easier and they are more durable
when you're done. But be carefull as well as some printers just can't
handle the very thick paper.

the Klingons and the Klingon prosecutor begins speaking Klingon but

You know what supports this? At the beginning of that scene, the

I also had presumed that was an SFX shot, and now that I think about it, it
was because of that magazine article. I wonder what other (mis)information made

So then the cave entrance should be in the same general vicinity. I think
all you'd have to do is look for the rock formations seen in the film.
The road where Brent and the gorilla are fighting on the wagon (and the
branch that knocked the gorilla off) can be seen on a You Tube video. Of course,
I can't find it just now. There's even a part that shows the branch was cut off
as I recall. Anyone else see this and/or have it saved in their favorites?
Speaking of caves, was that an actual cave at the end of PLANET (filmed at
Point Dume) or just wooden scaffolding built up to a fake entrance?
Chris L.
>>Yes, it is, but exactly where remains a mystery. I'm also not
sure where the location is where Brent stops the wagon and unbridles the horses
for just Nova and himself. I don't think it's Malibu Creek, so therefore
either Vasques Rocks or Red Rock Canyon (I suspect Red Rock). Oh, one
other thing I wanted to say was that the scenes where Brent and Nova are being
chased on horseback by the gorilla troupe (just before they find the cave),
those shots with them riding along the tree line are on the same field that was
the cornfield in PLANET and the "mowed" field the mutant army crosses to battle
the apes in BATTLE. <<<.html

They made some unnecessary trims in BATTLE too, including the trek across

Oddly enough, I remember reading an article about AMC about a year after
they made their format change, and it said that the ratings had actually gone up
since they started breaking up the films and showing commercials. That made no
sense to me, but there you go. However, they do run 'Mad Men' and 'Breaking
Bad', plus the Apes films, so they've got something going for
them.
Chris L.
>>OK, is it just me or does anyone else get upset when AMC who
graciously runs our favorite films, decides to 'trim' them for their time
slots? Unless I am mistaken, when Caesar goes into Ape Management some of
the training sequences (the club, flamethrower) were all cut out!! Am I
right or wrong? It's such a short movie, why bother? If the bomb hadn't
killed the old governor then this might have! I remember in 98 when they ran
them all weekend in letterbox, uncut, and Kim Hunter was on. What happened

Thanks Scott!! I especially enjoyed the BENEATH behind the scenes shots. In
particular, where Ted Post is trying to show James Franciscus what his facial
reaction should be when the Mutants remove their masks.
Occasionally, I've know people to get unique items like these (in
particular, lots of behind the scenes photos from BENEATH) and then flat
out refuse to share them with other fans because of a "mine, mine, mine"
mentality. A complete dick move in my opinion. I've spent lots of money on

I took it to refer to the mass merchandising of POTA in the early-to-mid
70's. There had been merchandising before (Disney is a prime example), but
nothing to the extent that was does with Apes.
Chris L.
>>Nice, but there's a number of mis-statements in the thing, and this
bothers me: "Not only was the film significant from a financial
perspective (it was a smash hit when released), but it arguably became the first
box office titan to spawn a multimillion dollar advertising explosion into movie
related merchandise (a trend that people ignorantly and wrongly believe that
Lucas started nine years later with his space fantasy)." Well, I can
argue with that.... Doesn't anyone remember that the James Bond films, I think
starting with GOLDFINGER or THUNDERBALL in '64 and '65, had huge marketing
campaigns, or what about Disney's DAVEY CROCKET in the '50s and HOPPALONG
CASSIDY before that, or maybe even TARZAN in the thirties? And lest
we not forget that in was the failure of Arthur Jabobs's own DR. DOLITTLE that
killed any kind of promotional marketing for PLANET in '68, and all it's sequels
beyond. It wasn't until the big ratings the movies got when first shown on
TV that Fox finally decided on a campaign for APES. <<<.html

I always figured the cave entrance was filmed somewhere in Malibu Creek
State Park. There's a behind the scenes photo of James Franciscus standing near
the entrance up on eBay now (Item number 130193071050), and it looks like it's
an actual location instead of a mock up.
BTW, my offer of a steak dinner for whoever finds the actual location of
said cave (and takes some photos) is still valid.
>>The "Planet of the Apes Wall" is a large rock wall used for rock
climbing. I guess the climbers named it that since the cage area was
located at the top of the rocks and the Rock Pool is so near. I don´t
think the wall itself was shown in POTA. The "Wall" is a large oblong
rock that juts out from the hillside atop which the old Crag's Country Club
Lodge stood in the 1920's, 30's and 40's. The outdoor cage in PLANET was
built atop the foundation for the lodge, which Fox tore down in either the late
40's or early 50's. The small "Ape House" structure you see in PLANET when
you first see Cornelius, and late the structure that Taylor, Nova and Lucius
exit when they make their escape, was built against the part of the "Wall" that
runs into the hillside. In BATTLE you see the "Wall" from the other side
when the apes have their council meetings. I hope this is clear to
everyone. <<
I'm having a hard time picturing both. Maybe a couple of screen grabs from
PLANET and BATTLE are in order?

Though never officially explained, that's a pretty good interpretation of

fact that one of the stuffed astronauts had black skin, which the apes had never
seen before.

Glad you had a good time. I noticed that a lot of people had Adult Swim
shirts on, and I have to admit that I joined in the foray as well. I picked up a
few Mooninite shirts poking fun at Boston for their overreaction in thinking
that Lite Brites were actually terrorist placed C4 explosives, so I wore one of
those since I was only about a half hour away from Beantown. It's just a picture
of Ignignokt (flipping the bird) with the word terrorist printed
underneath. I get a lot of compliments about that one as well.
I was always gratified to be able to say that I watched Home Movies
during it's initial run on UPN back in 1999, two years before everyone else
discovered it on Adult Swim. You could always tell that Brendon Small was a very
talented person, and if you step back a bit you can see certain similarities
between Home Movies and Metalocalypse in terms of how the characters are
presented. And even though "Don't Put Marbles In Your Nose" was a
Scäb song, you could easily see Dethklok performing it as well.
I actually listen to a lot of metal, but at the same time I'm selective
about which bands I follow. I also get strange looks when I tell people that
I like certain metal bands for the lyrics. :-) I enjoy
the music as well mind you, but that's not the only appeal like it is for
some.

>>I thought it ROCKED! I've never been a big fan of Metal. but
there's no faulting the musicianship of Dethklok. Absolutely amazing. I
understand Brandon Small was a graduate of the Berklee College of Music
before going into comedy. It certainly shows in the music. This is not the
average dumbed down, head banging rubbish usually associate with the Metal
genre. It's as thoughtful and thought provoking as his comedy is. It's
hard to believe this is the same guy from Home Movies. I wore my Venture
Bros. T-Shirt to the show. It was a big hit with the crowd. But of course -
they were Adult Swim Fans. <<

I think McDowall was gulity somtimes of overacting but that was the point really. The apes were cast
from the stage in the original because of this bigger than life style they had. The actors brought to life the apes buy cranking it up under the make-up. Compare this to the more natural or method actors under the appliances and you see a dead mask ( the guest apes on the TV show spring to mind) but he was capable of great emotional moments in all the ape productions he was involved in.
Having worked both on stage and in TV/film productions as an actor and director, I can appreciate what the difficulties are. A mask seperates you from reality yet focus's you in on the physical communication and body language of a charactor. It (the mask) both free's you and isolates you
from your own personality. Put this beside am actor "playing it straight" without the make-up/mask and you get a clash which worked perfectly for the apes and sci-fi/monster movies in general.
In Silence of the Lambs you get a perfect example of a stage trained actor (Anthony Hopkins) and a film or method trained actor (Jodie Foster) working perfectly in sync for the benifit of the production and the audience. I think it was very clever of jacobs and Shaefner to cast as they did.
I do apologise for going on here, but I think POTA and the following films and series were, mostly, great examples of ensemble casting. The style and casting of the movies was variable to say the least.
I personaly think James Franciscus was "bigger" in style and reaction than Heston and yet Heston is sometimes ridiculed for his performance and yes McDowall could be seen to be "presenting" a charactor rather than "being" a charactor but he still gave a memorable performance in each of his films or TV shows even if he looked like he was tired from the effort of working through the appliances as in Battle for the POTA.
McDowall was asked back again and again because he could be relied upon to bring an ape charactor to life where others struggled. Virgil and Aldo in Battle both could have given the appliances more movement and Ive already mentioned the guest apes on TV.
McDowall's voice should also be mentioned as a trademark "sound" of the apes. Having the apes talk with English or stage accents was another very clever and subtle alienating effect that Jacobs/Shaefner decided upon.
To me Roddy Mcdowall represented all that was good and great about the apes films and series
thats not to take anything away from the other great performances and artistry involved both behind and in front of the camera.
Well thats that out of my system! Long live the apes!

McDowall over playing, as usual with as much depth as a kids pool. McDowall was one of those kind of actors that needed a good director -- which explains why he's so good in PLANET, ESCAPE and CONQUEST, but oh God! Get the hose out for him sometimes on the TV show.

I don't know, but I'm watching it again on AMC right now and Chu ck battles magnificently for his melon. Though I guess he didn't know that until the Trial. So technically he was battling for his nuts, but kicking gorilla ass all over the place. All three bits of anatomy worth fighting for.. Zira would have been proud!
Speaking of Zira, I just watched an epi of Mission Impossible and McDowall was the bad guy. Jim's cover name was, coincidentally, Hunter. McDowall over playing, as usual with as much depth as a kids pool.

A complete dick move in my opinion. I've spent lots of money on the items I've contributed to the online POTA community (all of which are on Hunter's site), and my first thought when I receive them is to get the images posted online (which either Hunter or Greg P. always help out with). Any others from BENEATH? Chris L.

Taking the above with the plethora of salt one needs, as it is
pigeonholes that you don't like would it be better to say that we'd
be no better than pigeons if we liked their holes?
I think I just confused myself...
But I wanted to sequay, seque? ( however it's spelt)into the
connection of Metal and Apes and almost pigeons.
Does anyone remember the Heavy Metal/Rock group called Budgie (
1970's) who had an album cover with Apes on Horseback, however, the
Ape heads were replaced with Budgies. Great album cover. I have no
idea what the music was like but I always liked the ridiculous
parady of Budgies on the bodies of Gorillas from Planet Of The Apes.

These are pretty big files, so they should probably not be kept in the

suggest that those interested download them as soon as possible.
The website (listed on the PDFs) do have other papercraft projects, so

True. We talk so much about Kim & Roddy that I often forget
how great Evans' Zaius is. We're actually lucky Eddie G didn't
take the part. Evans brought something special to that

Love these quotes . . .
SIGHTS AND INSIGHTS When an
anniversary comes along to a film which is beloved and has a following it is
expected by the consumer for a company to do the "best" it can do – not a second
hand attempt. That is exactly what FOX has done with this release of PLANET OF
THE APES. Rehashing material for a third time speaks volumes in terms of the
care, or lack of, not to mention respect for a piece of film history. Lesser
films in the FOX library have gotten better treatment.
SIGHTS AND INSIGHTS FOX was never for
the DVD format, but the man responsible for that stance has left - and
seemingly, as left the company struggling to make up for lost time. This rushed,
and cheaply put together box set wreaks of that state of mind.
They sure know Fox and how they feel about POTA.
It makes me want to kick Rupert Murdoch's ass.
Is it just them or are all studios curses with
similar leadership, if you can call it that???

Bandolier into Google. This is the name of the Group and the Album.
The cover painting was by Patrick Woodruff who painted numerous
SF/Fantasy/Horror pictures for albums and books in the 70's.
I would post a link, but I don't know how.

questions, please ask if they corrected the audio EFX from BENEATH. If you
want, I can e-mail you a list of particulars.

| Subject: Battle/Lawgiver theory, what do you all think? |
|
.html This is a theory that occurred to me as I was working on my POTA
fanfic, and I thought I'd put it out there and see weather my fellow
Apes fans agree with me. My apologies if someone else thought of this
before me, and forgive me if I'm pointing out the blatantly obvious.
Most people I've talked to agree that the ending of Battle for the
Planet of the Apes is proof that the future had been changed, and
instead of the Ape scoiety of the first two films developing a joint
Ape/Human scoiety develops instead. I've always assumed this as well,
but maybe the future wasn't really changer after all. My theory
focuses on the Lawgiver.
My theory is this, the Lawgiver we see at the beginning and end of
Battle isn't the Lawgiver mentioned in the first two movies, the one
who wrote the sacred scrolls. Maybe it's just me, but I've always just
assumed that the Lawgiver from Battle is the one mentioned in the
original movie, but now I don't think that is the case.
Try to follow my logic. The ending scene in Battle with the Lawgiver
teaching his class of Ape and Human children takes place 600 years
after Caesar's death, which means that there is gap of approximately
one thousand four hundred years between the end of Battle and the
start of the original film. In the original Dr. Zaius tells Taylor
that the Sacred Scrolls were written approximately one thousand two
hundred years ago, two hundred years after Battle's ending scene. That
would mean that Battle's Lawgiver couldn't be the THE Lawgiver from
the original movie. That would also mean that there is ample time for
the joint ape/human scoiety to fail, Humans to devolve into animals,
and the Ape scoiety seen in the first two movies to develop.
Again, forgive me if I;m pointing out something that everyone else had
already figured out a long time ago, but there it is. So what do you
all think? <.html

.htmlPersonally, I think most people are just reading into the thing at face value and not getting the original point for the inconsistencies . The whole point of the parallel ape society was to bring to light what is negative in our own. Once given the power of speech the ape prove to be no better or worse than us. They hide the truth, exploit the innocent, hide behind lies, misuse religion, have prejudices, ignore the lessons of history even rewrite it to fit their own end. When seen in this way less explaining is needed in attempting to tie together inconsistent plots points and actually adds more depth to the very large and epic history.
The Lawgivers original intentions may have been liberal and socially minded but I believe through the years were altered to fit political means. In PLANET we are show the structure then BENEATH the end results. With ESCAPE, CONQUEST and BATTLE we the viewers are actually shown the truth of how events unfolded. Events are as they actually happened, before theyve been rewritten by and evolving society which prided itself to be different from those who enslaved them. Through the thousands of years they (Apes) only fell into the
same trap we human did and like the game of telephone the true story changed to fit what they felt their perfect society required. They felt that hiding the truth would be safer than dealing with it. Humans ruling the world covered up. A Gorilla committing the first murder of an ape covered, and perhaps given the credit of being the first to say, No to his human master. Obviously something happened, politically to change the importance of Orangutans from BATTLE to the TV
series and the then PLANET. The Orangutans rule, the Gorillas have the power/army. Thats a bit switch from the larger number Chimps that seem to be around in BATTLE . I believe there was a coup by the Orangutans in league with the Gorillas which would develop into the system we see in the TV Series and is suggested as being still wavering and precariously balanced between the Orangutans and the Gorillas with still some distaste from the Chimpanzees. By PLANET each has settled into their places, but by BENEATH we see old satisfactions rearing. (In PLANET it was hinted at when Zira and Dr. Galan talk about a quota system being abolished for Chimps with titles perhaps?)
For these and other reason this is why I feel the statue of Caesar is seen weeping. For all or differences, we, ape and human are terribly the same doomed to repeat the past for lack of learning from it. All that Caesar aspired to would be lost to hubris and arrogance. Proving that one species was no better than the other
or worse. Proving, at least in this section of the universe, there was nothing better than man. - Scott B.

How about this idea?
At some point after 2670 AD (the time of
the epilogue in Battle ),
there’s a war between the Humans (trying to restore their dominion over
the Apes, possibly driven by a charismatic demagogue) and the Apes (defending
the status quo). Some humans stumble upon a cache of biological WMD, which they
try to use on the Apes, killing many, until a chimp doctor named Galen discovers
a cure. The Apes are about to lose when a gorilla named Aldo rallies the Apes. He
leads a war of extermination against the Humans at a Rwandan genocide scale,
driving the survivors out to the jungle, and in the process the liberal/egalitarian
Ape leadership is swept aside.
Aldo, it turns out, realizes that Gorillas
aren’t particularly good at the boring parts of government, and leaves
that to the weakest element of ape society, the Orangutans. The Orangutans and
the Gorillas prop each other up, and form their own “creation myth”,
with Aldo (metaphorically speaking) as the Ape who first said “no”.
The leader of the Orangutans that comes up with the pact is the Lawgiver, and
to give the Chimps a fig leaf in their new society, immortalize Proteus as the
Chimp (I think he was one) that helped humiliate the surviving Humans by
leading one on a leash for the ape children to make sport of. This leads to the
stasis-based society we see in Planet.
And to reinforce the idea of repeating
history, the bioweapon the Humans used turns out to have genetic effects which
lead to the de-evolution of humanity over time (the ones with exposure to the
area where the weapon was released, anyway). You wouldn’t think 2000
years of radiation would be enough by itself? And needing to escape apes wouldn’t
be enough reason to suddenly stop thinking and talking after millennia of doing
so?
So in essence you have a mini-war which
has reason to give the apes a permanent reason to be fearful of humans beyond
just the historic memory of a “time before time”.

Agreed, 100%. Apes made the very same mistakes
humans made, and were capable of the very same
corruptions and indiscretions. If that is, in
fact, the same Lawgiver, then his teachings were
corrupted and distorted by those who came after
him. Thus, the Sacred Scrolls, as Cornelius
says, aren't worth the parchment they're written
on--because they're meaningless propoganda,
filled with lies and inaccurate presentations. <.html

Coolness. Please see if you can find the table/booth/ panel where Fox is supposedly going to be discussing the Blu-Ray set. If you get to ask any questions, please ask if they corrected the audio EFX from BENEATH. If you want, I can e-mail you a list of particulars.
And on the odd chance they're giving some promo stuff away, please grab me one. Or two. Of each. ;-)

I'm not sure, but I think in the long run Robinson would have been too much of a distraction as Zaius. Everyone would still be going "That's Edward G. Robinson!" Evans, because he wasn't that familiar to movie audiences then and especially now, kind of IS Dr. Zaius.
